I am a powwow dancer and YES everyone is welcomed. Usually go Friday-Sunday. There are contest dances, social dances, gourd dance, specialty dances, intertribals, etc.. On intertribals, it is welcome for everyone to participate. Just be respectful, do not call our regalia a Costume or Decorations as every piece has a specific place and purpose. A lot is passed down the family and do not touch a dancer without asking permission. The arena announcer will tell you when you cannot film and what ia going on. Everyone is welcome, come and enjoy everything from the dancing to the food and different tribal customes, artists, etc.. The numbers are for contest and to be judged. The dance styles have a history and purpose. I even get my non-native friends out to dance/walk with me during intertribals.

Yes it’s open to everyone. Wanting to learn our culture would mean learning 100s of different cultures from different tribe because we have our own beliefs and traditions. Powwows is like a social gathering for all people.

Pow wows are open to any one. That has been my experience throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. They have several categories including men's fancy, Chicken dance, women's jingle, and all ages

As a Navajo, we dont actually have pow wows. It is not our culture. But, we do go in these modern times because of friends, family, and food. All is really is, is an Inter-tribal dance contest. Everyone is welcome for the price of admission...lol.

In Ontario, Ca here! There are 2 types of powwow- traditional & competition. Comp will have numbers. Theres different dance categories. Fancy, traditional, jingle, woodland to name the main ones. Also, anyone can attend powwows, we love being able to teach people who want to learn. ❤❤

I have been to a few powwows, they are very different in person. It’s like trying to tell someone what a concert is like who’s never been to one you just can’t really capture it. I cried the first time I heard the drums. ITS AMAZING, IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE TO GO DO IT!! YOU WILL NEVER FORGET IT!!!!

African American here. I feel such a deep and grounding connection to Indigenous Native music. My dad is from. South Carolina and he always said we had Black Foot in our lineage…. But he likes to make stuff up sometimes. But lest we not forget, native peoples helped the slaves and integrated them into their tribes when our ancestors escaped. Much love ❤️✊🏽 standing with y’all 🪶

If it wasn't for the native people, we wouldn't have the blues or rock n roll! Listen to the drumbeat and you will hear our drum! It was the blues men in the early 1900s who acknowledged our contributions to the music people hear today!

Get a DNA test you may be pleased to find out he wasn't telling stories! The natives were often better to live with back in the old days the reservations were almost inaccessible. And a lot still are to most people.

As Tohono O’odham, our powwows or many others anyone is welcome. The regalia that a dancer wears are either bought or handmade, but everything bead, feather (eagle feathers aren’t meant for any person to touch, especially ones on the ground), & cloth hold meaning & blessings. As for the drums, it’s a way for beats to represent one’s heart beat & inner spirit. Powwows are contest ceremonies held for any tribe with jingle dancers, chicken dances, all ages, fancy dancers (men & women) & so on.

I think it was in 1991 I attended a huge pow wow in Southern California. May have been at the orange county fair grounds. I had never been and wanted to experience it. Took my 4yr old son. It was beautiful. Natives from all over the country were there. Tasted food I'd never heard of before like a 'Willy Boy' delicious and fry bread! Bought a beautiful tshirt that I wore of warriors past till it had so many holes and runs that I had to finally reluctantly throw it away😢. I loved watching the dances. Standing when others stood and loved the drums sounding so perfectly in unison. The beautiful regalia that the men women and children wore was stunning takes your breath away to see them dance. But the most spectacular scene was when an elderly women enteted the grounds to dance, her very long braided hair whirling around and she twirled holding a bright colored shawl as she danced so freely and the people respectfully laid money down for her. Its an experience I will never foget. I hope others like me who are not native can experience it too. ❤

I went for the first time about 6 years ago to the local powwow I had just found out about my heritage (grandma adopted out of her culture), and wanted to learn. There were plenty of on non Indigenous people there. I was by myself and didn't know what to expect. There' were certain protocols, according to the local nation, like when it is okay to take pictures, and not okay, or to stand when an elder is speaking, etc. Just being respectful. There's people who specifically help guide the pow wow. Lots of families and kids - it's awesome.

They compete in different categories! Men's , Women 's Traditional, grass dance , shawl dance , jingle dress , Men & Women fancy dance ! Hoop dance , kids categories also ! The drummers also compete, drumming!

The dresses and the design are unique to the individual. Some people buy dress and some even make there own from scratch. Every piece of the clothing are made from piece from the land or clothing store lol, Many designs can be based on anything you like, you can be a crow, buffalo, road runner, bear, and so on. You can stand by the drums and feel the passion and the hearts that they being put thru songs. There are many different tribes but they all come together to dance and song, There are many ways to dance as well. Many tribe across America are losing there language to time. And there’s peyote sing where that stay up all thru out the night singing And water drum where they can sing for and prayer or a small child birthday or a lose love one The voice of the drum will lift you spirits and make you happy.

It's an everyone can come event usually smaller ceremonies that don't allow outsiders or pictures. There's also some reservations that shut down to everyone except their tribe because of their culture

Pow wow are open to everyone. The pow wow itself is not traditional. It's a mix of a bunch of different tribal practices. Some of the elements of the pow wow are the result of "wild west shows" that basically put Native people on display for non-Native audiences in the late 1800s/early 1900s. At the same time, there are traditional things that happen at the pow wow. There are prayers, practices, ceremonies that take place throughout the event that not just for show. For a non-Native person, it can be difficult to know how they are supposed to be interacting with what is going on at the pow wow. Like we welcome spectators, but we aren't performers. There is a lot of reverence and ceremony happening, but the MC is also cracking jokes and we're having silly contests (switch dances, wannabe dances, etc.). There are deep rooted traditional practices, but then we are also contest dancing for prize money. We are telling people that their "Indian princess" ancestor isn't a thing because we don't have princesses, but then we have pow wow royalty and pageants. So it can be difficult to navigate what is going on if you are not familiar with Native cultures. Know that everyone is welcomed to come to attend pow wows, just be respectful and humble, and expect to see apparent contradictions...but know that they aren't contradictions to us. 😅

She:kon, Haudenosaunee from Six Nations of the Grand River, just wanted to let you guys know that there are an incredible amount of Afro-Indigenous people on Turtle Island (North America). Our nations accepted you long before the United States did. Many Haudenosaunee were genocided out of New York State in 1779 by George Washington "the village destroyer", however our council fire still burns at Onondaga and the Confederacy is still strong.

First off thank you for the video. Yes we love to have everyone come and enjoy themselves at the pow wow. There will be dancing as well for everyone don't matter if you're indigenous or not. There are rules even for us, don't touch anyone's regalia without asking, don't touch anyone's hair without asking, ask if it's ok to take pictures and videos, also ask before taken someones picture in there regalia, no drinking alcohol.(MOST IMPORTANT RULES 1 don't leave without trying Frybread 2 don't leave without trying the Indian Taco and 3 Enjoy yourself and don't be afraid too talk to use ask any questions you have) if you have any questions id be happy to try and answer them every tribe is a little different i'm Mi'kmaq from Canada the real name is Turtle Island.

For most tribes, its pretty much just a festival while they also practice ceremonies and such during it. For my tribe, Omaha/Umoho tribe, we gathered like this as a celebration for a completed harvest and goes on for 3 days and we call it Hede'wachi

I am a white person who got the privilege to go to the Gathering Nations in Albuquerque, NM at the Pit (University of New Mexico). It was an experience of a lifetime and you should experience it for yourself. You might even meet some famous Native celebrities, I met Gary "Litefoot" Davis(actor/ 1st Native American Rapper) who is the actor that was in the movies Indian in the Cupboard/ Krull.... when I was there back in 1997. You will definitely enjoy learning about the culture of the different tribes.

Pow wows are put on for ourselves and outsiders. Sundance's and other sacred gatherings like that are a lot more strict depending on the tribe.

Powwow is for everyone and is a public display of a portion of our culture. Ceremony is what no one is invited to and is what is kept private, you’re more than welcome to come to a powwow and the people will welcome you with open arms, just don’t step on any granny’s toes, native granny’s are crazy if provoked or if drinking🤣🤣

Yes, you can come to the event and if you want to participate then that’s a whole Nother story. Native Americans don’t do anything without cause. so our dancers are not for fun. They are spiritually attached to something and in the old days we used to pray every time we dance these days they don’t they just do the dance.

I think it's important for you to know as well that many Native Americans identify with Hip Hop, Rap and the blues. There is a kinship there as a people that can relate to those genres of music rooted in being disenfranchised and on the outside looking in of all that glitters in both Canada and the US. Cheers.

I would google for a pow wow in your state. You may be closer to an indigenous community than you think.
