Elton went on Soul Train this song and "Philadelphia Freedom." Gotta do the opening song from the album this song is on: "Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding"--it's 11 minutes long, but takes you on such a rollercoaster you don't even realize it.

Elton John ruled the radio in the seventies. He may be best known these days for his ballads, but his rockers are a lot of fun too -- "Crocodile Rock", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", "The Bitch Is Back" -- and for something completely different, check out the clip of him performing "Pinball Wizard" from the 1975 Ken Russell film of The Who's 1969 rock opera album Tommy.

It's about a futuristic all-girl punk band. Bernie Taupin wrote it as a satire about the rock music scene at the time -- glam rock arena concerts. The Bennie is Bernie's old girlfriend Sally Bennington (electric boots , mohair suit, etc.).

In the 70's, Elton John was the biggest thing going. This was probably his biggest album. You won't be sorry if you do a deep dive into Elton's music. I don't know which other songs of his you might have done, but essential ones include SOMEONE SAVED MY LIFE TONIGHT, ROCKET MAN and GOODBYE YELLOWBRICK ROAD among many, MANY others!

When he hit the American scene as a solo artist, his music was incredible . We had never heard much piano work like this in a while. This is truly one of his best. There so many more such as: saturday night's alright for fighting, rocket man, goobye yellowbrick road, and my personal favorite funeral for a friend/loe lies bleeding. I always liked his catalog from the 70s better than his 80s work. More rock and roll than pop oriented. Great stuff though!

Hi Don. I know a lot of people prefer his earlier stuff, but I personally love many of those 80s albums, and of course he's gone on to do great work up to the present day. Someone who had two UK #1s in 2021 must be doing something right (even though one was a remix and one a Christmas song with Ed Sheeran!). Personally, my top two are 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' (from 1973) and 'This Train Don't Stop there Anymore' (from 2001). They change position, I can't really choose. And my #3 is 'The One' from 1992. I wish reaction channels would dip into his later work from time to time. I do appreciate that many are hearing it for the first time, but this is a multi-decade artist and I'd love to hear some later songs get some love. Asia and BJ, how about giving those three a whirl? Oh, and someone below mentions 'Sacrifice' (1989) - there's the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s covered! Toss in 'Home Again' from 2013 and we've covered the 10s!

Interesting note: Elton didn't think Bennie should be released as the 'single' but was out voted by a record exec. One of the few songs of the 70's that the artist performed on American Bandstand AND Soul Train! Bennie also went on to be a signature song for Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

I remember in the summer of 1975 going to theater to see "Aloha Bobbie and Rose" This was the opening Sound Track. I have never been able to forget it and still flash back every time I hear it. Thank you for this and keep up the good work.

“Bennie And The Jets” is about kids fanboying and fangirling over a fictional band called Bennie and the Jets. A lot of rock songs are meant to be like little movies. They paint a fictional scene and/or are sung from the point of view of fictional characters talking about fictional things.

Yep, it's just a little made-up narrative that you can day dream about, while you listen to a great music track. Like a lot of pop, the song is the body, and the lyrics are just some clothes it wears - they're well crafted and fun but they're not trying to be T. S. Eliot‎.

I'm not sure but I've always thought that Bennie And The Jets was a musical group with their lead singer being a female named Bennie. She seems to be a trendsetter/celebrity based on the line, "she's got electric boots, a mohair suit, you know I read it in a magazine".

The studio production is what made this song pop and become a hit. The reverb and off timed clapping were intentional. Elton said it was an authentic sound to a live audience who is always a beat off.

I saw Elton in 1979 in a small theater (3,000 Capacity) I was 13. He played for an an Hour and a half then there was an intermission he came back out and player for another Hour and a half. It was amazing, I still have the program.

Fun Fact: this song was NOT recorded live. Elton’s record producer, Gus Dudgeon added the live effects to the studio recording. Just recently learned this, myself, on “Professor Of Rock”. You tube channel. Tells you what a good record producer can do.

Elton did not wanted this song to be released as a single, but he was outvoted because the #1 black radio station in Detroit got it and played it. It became the most requested song. It went on to be a huge R&B hit.

Anytime you hear early Elton, pay attention to the bass. Dee Murray was underrated but one of the best in the business. Still in awe 50 years later at how good he was.

Elton John has said he didn’t think much of this song at the time he recorded it. He thought it was cool, but he didn’t expect much to come of it. When it went to number one on the Billboard R&B charts, he was shocked. He had never had an R&B hit in his life, and that made him very happy.

Back in the day radio had formats which meant some songs you heard the same time everyday at 7:15am I was taken off with Benny and Jets my mom would let me stop getting ready for school cause she new it was my fave i was 7 or 8. Love this And the black community ate this song for breakfast.

p.s. - Bernie Taupin is Elton’s lyricist. He would send Elton words and Elton wrote the music. It’s how they did it from the beginning, Elton in the UK and Bernie in California. They didn’t discuss it, nothing was ever changed. It’s why Taupin’s poetry remains the best ever.

You are so right when you say he's a musical genius. Saw him on a talk show once when he was asked how long it usually took to put his music to the words & he said it was sometimes in an instant, so the host gave him a cloakroom ticket & Elton immediately hit the keys & sang the the words right off the ticket with loads of musical twists & turns, absolutely brilliant, brought the house down

At 51, and all the memories I have lost over the years, I still have a distinct memory of my surroundings(when and where) of when I first heard this song. It was like discovering a timeless, musical treasure, for all to experience and enjoy. Love this feel good song. Who is Bennie and The Jets? I have no idea, but the name sounds like a performer of some kind. Another great, fun Elton John song is CROCIDILE ROCK.

I had 3 and a half years of piano lessons and quit when I was 10. When I was 13 I discovered Elton John. I got the sheet music for Bennie and the Jet and my piano teacher told me ... good luck, because you get to the part where it says "piano solo" but it's blank.

When we saw him live this past October for his Farewell Goodbye Yellowbrick Road tour - this was the show opener. What a way to kick it off, too. So much energy and as Asia says - a suave vibe!!! But it wasn't till half way through the set when he hit "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" (my fav song) that really got my emotions stirred up. Such an amazing show start to finish! I'm so happy I got to see him one last time - and all because my 18 y.o. son really wanted to see him live - wasn't expecting that, i mean he always liked Elton's songs, but it's not something he's ever really bumping - so I was pretty surprised when he announced he really wanted to go. So it was a father-son evening and was truly a great one.

Bennie and The Jets...a fictional band....it was how we were back in the day, waiting for Hit Parader magazine to come in the mail so we could see what our favs were wearing, etc. Bennie wore electric boots and a mohair suit !

As Elton was so big in the 70's. It was pop music not Rock and ROLL. a big difference for real rock an rollers. But Elton was great

I was just litening to a Rush video thinking how I was never that into Neil Pearts drumming because it was so busy. And they say the silence is as important as the notes in music. Well this song is an extreme example of that. He bangs chords and sings while you have to wait for the next chord to hit. The breaks is what makes it compelling. It's a hard beat. Just banging on off beats.
