Elton John is amazing. He admits he cannot write a lyric. Bernie Taupin is the soul of this heart and soul combo.

I love the message of this song as well. Choosing the simple authentic life over the glitz. Sing and play piano--Freddie Mercury.

A bit of trivia. Bernie taupin is the poetic genius behind all Elton john songs and Elton is the musical genius. These guys once roomed together when they were young. They began writing songs when they were kids. Later Bernie would send lyrics to Elton through faxes and Elton would sit by himself with his piano and come up a melody. They never worked together on a song. 50 years later it remains the same formula. Its remarkable I've never heard any other collaborators work this way.

Elton once did a concert wearing a duck suit.. just because he felt like it. Lol Look it up. Elton is incredible in so many ways. The obvious being his ability to sing. But he was is a quality pianist as well. His stage presence, flamboyance and just the overall person he is. I top 10 music GOAT for sure. So many great songs and so many have a dif vibe.

The reason this sounds so good is because it's the very well produced and layered studio (i.e. album) version, which Elton and his band are miming to for a TV show

Elton John has had so many hits it's hard to believe. I was in the Navy in the early 70s, stationed in Pearl Harbor, and Elton's Mad Man Across The Water was one of my favorite albums. I remember being in the Philippines during Viet Nam and crossing the bridge walking into Subic Bay, and hearing this song playing over loud speakers outside the bars lining the streets. It was #1 at the time.😎 Great memories.......Great Reaction. 💝

Guys! Kudos! The title track to one of, maybe THE, greatest albums (and double albums) in recorded history! Numerous singles to chart and awarded the GRAMMY HALL OF FAME! Selling 30 million and still counting! Often regarded as Sir Elton John's magnum opus, it truly is a masterpiece. If you just stuck with his chart toppers you'd be kept busy for months and this album alone charted number 1 in 1973 and 74. 8 times Platinum (Billboard seems to have stopped counting) named as one of the 50 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. And the second album I bought with my own money (I didn't earn my own money until I stayed in one place for more than 6 months, thus unable to hold a job of my own at 13) Now I'll finish listening to the reaction... Funny thing about the "glasses'. He didn't need corrective lenses, until he started wearing the 'costume' jewelry glasses. Elton John's voice has a touch of 'blues' set to modern pop/rock. And play the piano?? You ABSOLUTELY MUST watch his performance of CROCODILE ROCK on the Muppet Show. One thing to address...he absolutely hid who he was. Being gay was NOT an accepted lifestyle in the 60s and 70s. He even got married to Renate Blauel to hide his homosexual truth. The recent movie "Rocket Man" is loosely based on his life and tracks the arc of his life and career.

More I listen to you guys the luckier I feel that I was a teen when he hit . For a year or two , it was all Elton and Earth Wind and Fire . What days those were , man . Bless you two . More !

My favorite Elton music is before this and before his "persona" came about - Tumbleweed Connection is an amazing album along with Captain Fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy is another album full of greatness. BTW - Add Leon Russell to the list of Piano playing singers - Stranger in a strange land is such a great song! He played piano for Joe Cocker (Jimi Page played on a track for Joe as well before Led Zeppelin was formed)

I saw Elton John live right before Covid hit. Wonderful concert! He had the biggest percussion section I have ever seen for a single artist.

Asia & BJ the world adored Sir Elton John in the 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s. Elton got me through Elementary school and High school. He’s titled Sir because Elton was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. If you're an Elton fan listen to this whole album along with "Madman across the Water". Also, he and John Lennon wrote "Whatever gets you through the night" together after John had quit playing live, but promised Elton if the song went to #1 he would play it live with him, which they did.

Piano players are unique in an era of guitar driven rock. But there is, Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill Little Richard - Lucille, Long Tall Sally, Good Golly Miss Molly. Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls of Fire, Breathless, Whole Lotta Shaking Going On. All from the 5o's. And if course the incomparable Ray Charles. Just to get you started.

Bernie Taupin wrote this song when he left Elton as his lyricist. Elton had been abusing both drugs and alcohol for a long time, and Bernie was done dealing with it. Soon after, Elton checked himself into a rehabilitation center, and spent quite a bit of time there. Bernie learned of this, and went to visit him. When Elton got sober, they returned to being the fantastic duo that they were. Bernie wrote Elton's lyrics until they both retired. If you've never seen it, Rocket Man is a movie about the first 15 or so years of his career. I believe another movie is in the works, for the next chapter.

I can't speak re: artists who are popular today but it used to be quite commonplace. Hell...Freddie Mercury was a pretty accomplished pianist in his own right; Donald Fagen is the keyboardist and lead vocalist for Steely Dan; Styx had Dennis DeYoung.

Grew up on this type of music as a preteen while running around on the streets in South Brooklyn…enjoyed all types of music..including top 40 hits…watched American Bandstand, Soul Train, Hee Haw…to me it was when music was at it’s most artistic and pinnacle state.

If I'm not mistaken this song is basically about Elton's friction with the studio. He talking about how they are trying to make him into something he doesn't want to be and that maybe saying goodbye to it all and walking away is the best thing for him to do. "Maybe you can replace me, there's plenty like me to be found, mongrels who aint got a a penny, sniffing for takers like you". Basically the studio/lable execs are vultures and there are other up-and-coming artists who would be willing to take whatever you are offering, but I'm not.

Carole King, DJ .. give me a moment and I could come up with several Piano player/singers .. and really .. guitar and singing is the same issue .. they're playing an instrument and singing. Those days were simple and powerful indeed .. both. You take someone like Keith Urban .. who not only plays guitar but is an amazing genius with his guitar AND he is a great composer and brilliant singer. And hey .. that doesn't mean I don't like Elton John .. cause I do and always have .. but I'm 70 years old .. and have lived through many "eras" of music .. lots and lots of fine and hugely talented artists. you guys are great ..
