They were laughing since people rarely sent their best since they didn't want everyone to know the best they could do and saying you sent your best backfires if you do poorly since that's "the best you can do"

Why not just build a big ass AWACS with an even more powerful radar? It's not like an F35's radar or command centre (ie one guy) is enough to beat an AWACS that does the same thing while sitting in much further owning to how much more powerful an AWACs radar could be

Sikorsky has the S-97 Raider compete with the Bell+Textron 360 Invictus in the AAS / FARA (armed scout) program. Meanwhile, the Sikorsky+Boeing SB-1 Defiant competes with the Bell+Lockheed V280 Valor for the FVL / FLRAA (long-range lift) program. Given how the US defense industry works, it is likely that both companies get one contract each, to keep every factory running, everybody employed. So if you like both Sikorsky or both Bell designs, get ready for a disappointment. The Raider has troop capacity while the Invictus does not, but that gives the Invictus better stealth properties, just like the Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche had. Not sure why they abandoned that design. Just to push a common scout and transport design when they know it's not very likely they'll get both contracts? The V280 seems to be the more mature design, faster and longer range. But the SB-1 might offer better handling and safety, as it is not a tilt rotor. And it's smaller, closer to the Blackhawk size. This might really go both ways.

That's not quite correct but it's not necessarily wrong. The f22 is said to maneuver extremely well without TVC. It's nose authority on its pitch axis is unparalleled. the twin horizontal tail stabs(stabilizers & elevator ) design use the entire surface to pich and roll. There authority is much greater then expected. More then adequate at very high altitudes While supersonic. However at lower air speeds the ability to pitch is decreased. While at the same time lower altitudes bleed alot of energy off to gain nose position/AOA. So TVC on that axis is essential for low speed maneuvering, and control/recovery- authority in a stall. It also adds to the balance/ stability, and decreased g loading on wings no matter the center of gravity or direction of lift vectors while maneuvering. According to Paul metz the f22 still couldn't do everything the yf23 could . Nice interview with him as he is the only person to fly both yf22 yf 23 and the final f22 design. Sadly the f23 wasn't chosen as its pretty much what the air force wants in the Gen 6 . 23 had far superior range larger payload bays and better stealth

The main reason the F23 was not chosen was the manufacturer. It had a history of delays and cost over runs at the time and had left a bad taste with the powers that be.

Not to forget, that Lockheed has perfected low observable stealth capabilities. No other country in the world has the radar cross sectional defeating characteristics that we do. Lockheed makes stealth missiles as well. Just because it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, doesn't mean it is. Not to mention that part of our adversaries' key tools in fighting our capabilities is to claim they are more capable than they really are. Just saying.

Absolutely! Pilots get the glory, but where would they be without the workhorse ground support? That's right, all dressed up with nowhere to go! My nephew was Air Force fighter aircraft ground support and later an expert drone pilot. He is now a top FAA certified civilian drone pilot called upon by first responders to assist in search and rescue and other types of civilian emergency missions.

I was a C-130 Crew Chief from 1999-2009. Civilians have no clue about mission capable rates.

I know this was from quite a while a go but thank you for your service. My father-in-law worked on F-14s, some part of the electronics in the cockpits I think, for the Navy on the USS Nimitz and I was always fascinated by his stories.

He probably did not work in F-16s in teh Navy. Maybe the F-18? The Navy only had a few F-16s to fly against their aircraft and certainly they did nto fly off of a carrier. BUt, if he worked on any fighter, he had a hard job and should be commended for it.@@visionhawk4403

The stealth tech of F-22 is ancient. There will be whole families of metamaterials that are customized for specific applications. I wouldn't be surprised if new generations of metamaterials become programmable and can change not just the RCS value but the radar signature of the aircraft on the fly so that one type of aircraft can spoof another type of aircraft on radar.

The F35 has the advantage as the J20 don't have to be infront of the F35 for the F35 to be able to shoot it down. The J20 can be behind the F35 even and the F35 will get a lock on it. The J20 has more manoeuvrability and has a faster climb rate but will only save its ass against 4.5 generation aircraft as 4.5 generation aircraft nose has to be virtually on the J20 to get a lock on it to be able to shoot it down

Yeah, unfortunately everyone is on that waiting list, to include the U.S. military. Lockheed still has the F-35 in LRIP phase but once the F-35 is in full production, those numbers of deliveries will be increasing at a much greater frequency year-to-year.

The coatings we have the SR 71 did not have it would have ablated off. The black color was something not for radar but for heat to radiate away. For some reason the fiction of an SR 71 is odd in other areas too like when it really retired

They did intend it to be, but changed early in development. If we can't hide from them, then we'll just go so fast that they can't hit us. I have this from the head of coatings for skunkworks at the time.

With all this talk of a potentia war one would think the US is rushing to field as many upgrades as possible but it is really unfortunate that they wasted so much time and gave so much tech to China just to have it backfire on us. @@dgthe3 you do realize the majority of the us air force is still not stealth aircraft, right? And the navy barely has any yet. And it's the same with china. And even with stealth aircraft, the extra range is very desirable. It saves gas and increases survivability. It's handy for killing everything. Right now if the US Navy fought china, the F-18s would get absolutely destroyed by the longer range missiles. The US is sadly playing catch up with air to air missiles, which never should have been allowed to happen
