I love this rap. I am teaching a lesson to a first grade class this week about patriotic pracitices (why we say the pledge, sing the national anthem, and how to properly treat a flag). I am going to play this rap for them. This includes so many important things about the flag

Beautiful. I appreciate your approach to teaching the real values our country was founded upon. And the music is great!
@sarahlahti
@sarahlahti 10 жыл бұрын
Sandra Hernandez Really??? If you want to be in a victim state, suit yourself. I wasn't talking to you and I never said anything about values being anything negative. Just because the song didn't list off every negative thing there was (and there was a lot...and still is!) doesn't mean that *all* the information holds no value. What do you get out of making comments like this? It doesn't do anything for me except waste my time reading negative stuff that I already know about. Just because I choose not to dwell on these things does not mean that I value atrocities or agree with them. Perhaps you ought to think a minute...use the acronym W.A.I.T. = Why Am I Talking? Your comment does not change the beauty of the song. Most of the governmental issues have negative sides. I teach those to my son too. There is good and bad in everything. Nothing in life is just black and white. Perhaps next time you read a comment like mine that really was intended to be an encouraging one, you could phrase it in a different way that would actually be helpful to the creators of the song...instead of just trashing someone. And I never "proudly" spoke of any specific values. People like you are irritating because you only perpetuate the problems by continuing the negativity. Try being a part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

@sarahlahti
@sarahlahti 10 жыл бұрын
Sandra Hernandez You know nothing about me so you have no idea what I have been "priveledged to" or not. Actually, those negative governmental issues do affect me. I choose to actually be active in doing something about it instead of trashing other people's views. What about you? What are YOU doing with your beliefs??? Do you vote? Do you talk with your legislators about issues that mean something to you? I never said I liked our government nor approved it. I was *trying* to be encouraging to the folks who wrote the song and telling them that I liked the song. Even if the actual details were incorrect or omissive, they were trying to teach what is in the curriculum that all kids in public schools in this country have to learn in a fun way. Maybe you have time to actually make a contribtion to change the lyrics of the song in order to reflect the truth about things our nation is wrong on? That would be a more suitable expenditure of your time than being a judgemental person and pointing the finger at those you don't even know. Yes our government is oppressive! Yes the flag is a symbol representing government. Do I like it? No I don't. But I am responsible for teaching my children *all* points of view in addition to what the required curriculum is. This song was just a way to make it a little more fun so my son might actually want to learn more. And by the way, do you think that all the other countries/nations are not oppressive? Take another look. Tell me one country that doesn't have blood on its hands. Sure there are TONS of stuff I don't like about our nation. I am embarrassed of our nation but I know that there is much I cannot change alone and making remarks that demean people for their views does not make you a better or smarter person. And it does nothing to improve our nation. I am so over negative people who want to perpetuate the problems instead of being part of the solution.

I actually listen to tons of music of all types. Yes rap too. Race has nothing to do with music until they make it so. It isn't a "priveledge" to not dwell on things. It is a "acquired skill" that doesn't come easy to everyone. Being white does not make anyone priveledged. From *your* offense ti my comments it is obvious that you aren't gett8ng my points either. And I *do* spend my time being activenin fighting for my beliefs and fighting oppression. I *do* visit my legislators. Since you are of the younger generation perhaps you just need more assistance in that area to help you understand how you can really make change or make your voice heard. It is hard in our country because we really don't have a democracy. Try visiting www.equalvoicevoting.com. You will begin to see why even our voting system doesn't work and how we can try to make it better. Yes I noticed the singers were white but again, race should NOT matter. What should matter is the content. If you know the truth, helo these guys tell it. Really! I think that would actually be a fun way to express your views and correct the misperception the song brings. Be positively active in defending your views and stand up for the truth. I am extremely supportive of that! Let's do like you say and make *peace*. We are on the same side you and I. My original post, as said earlier, was meant to be encouraging because it was something that actually has gotten some kids' attention in a subject that is very hard to teach young boys. Not because of what it is but because boys ages 9-12 are not interested in school period. And that is across the board. Ask any teacher and they will tell you...most boys are interested in playing not learning. So anything that encourages learning something (even if the content does need to be tweaked) is a plus. Please, contribute your truth to these guys. Or make a song of your own. I bet you would be good at it since you believe so strongly and love music. Perhaps that is your path in life. I support you in that (not that you need mine or anyone else's support. ..lol). Again, I am not your enemy. I just got really pissed at your usage of the word "priveledged". I am not so and these guys may not have been. I don't know anything about them except for the fact that they tried to do *something* to help educate kids in a different way. If they got it wrong..let's help them get is right...be part of the solution right? Namaste

Absolutely! I, too, have learned from this conversation. :) One thing though sticks in my mind and you may not have run across this yourself since you are not a white female. Us white females get stereotyped and oppressed as well. Racism runs both ways. I have experienced this first hand as I spend some years in Mississippi and Tennessee...just outside of Memphis. I was called "snow bunny". I had to home school my son there because he would have, literally, been the only white kid in the entire school and we were threatened with his life when we walked around the school. I was also oppressed just because I came from CA. People assumed I was either an atheist or a lesbian and deemed an outcast by many. This happened even on the campus of University of Memphis which was supposedly a "melting pot". I had to prove that I wasn't the person they assumed I was. You are right...oppression does make us angry and anger drives action. You are also right that history is something to learn from. I just want to make sure it is well understood that racism runs rampant everywhere and goes both ways. And...boy statistics. Anyone can come up with pretty much any statistic that favors their views just by the way the statistics and research data are gathered....so I feel it is an important thing to recognize so we don't go down the path of assumptions based on some statistics. Rather, I think, a mixture of statistics, research, and personal experience gives a more clear picture of what it really is. It sounds like you are a very passionate and determined person who will go far because of that determination and passion. I wish you well in your journey...again, not that you need my well wishes...lol. Let's just take this, learn from it, and be friends who will make a difference in this world full of oppression. :)

This makes me think of 9/11 and the feeling of encouragement I felt when I saw our flag waving on my way home from work. I thought of how that must have seemed so much more so to Frances Scott Key during the War of 1812.. I am planning to show your videos to my 5th grade GT students. They are so catchy yet a little edgy and pack in a lot of content.

This song is inspiring for a nation that has recently lost a lot of its pride. America has taken a beating and it has made mistakes, but there are a lot of great things about the United States: it is the nation that first established that all people are born with inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness--a notion that many great nations have adopted. Thank you, Smart Songs, for teaching our nation's youth about one of the most recognizable symbols in the world.

Fun fact: the first U.S flag was thought of by a child in school. His teacher told all the kids to make a flag for America. The teacher gave the kid a b- but when the president chose that one she changed his grade to a A.
@martinelicea4334
@martinelicea4334 9 жыл бұрын
I think that story actually relates to the current design of the flag with 50 stars. I don't think a school kid actually designed the original flag during the revolution in 1777 (the year congress adopted the flag). I don't know if they even had schools back then, let alone the grading system where teachers assign grades like B- or A.

I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents. - General Smedley D. Butler
