I am originally from North New Jersey. When I was young my grand father owned a diner and I grew up on Taylor ham and eggs with cheese on a hard roll. We never called it pork roll, it was always Taylor ham. I am thinking this is more of a central/south Jersey place. The big debate was always do you call it Taylor ham or pork roll. When I moved to Arizona they never even heard of it and you couldn't even get it here for a long time. Great memories.

Bred, born & raised in Jersey, I served in the United States Navy with guys from all over the country. Over the years, I'd brought some of my shipmates up to Jersey to spend the weekend with me/my family to show them how we do it in Jersey! Needless to say, there are *THREE THINGS* that I introduced these guys to, that _certainly_ changed their lives, _forever_ ,......"in a good way".....😉😎!! #1 is a good ole' fashion... *Jersey Diner* ! #2 is.....the _REAL_ *JERSEY SHORE* !! And #3 ,....yup; you got it! *PORK ROLL, EGG, & CHEESE* on a fresh-baked, Kaiser roll!! My one buddy, Skeeter, was originally from South Florida and had (of course) never tried _ANYTHING_ like pork roll, until he came up with me to spend a weekend in Jersey. He was instantly.... "in love"...with pork roll, that he actually purchased/brought back a 3lb. log of it when we headed back to our ship in Virginia. He was friends with one of the MS's (cook) on our ship and kept it in the fridge, on board! I spoke with Skeeter a handful of times over the last 20+ years (now a civilian, too) and every once in a while, he'll get a log of pork roll...shipped-down to Florida!! #GoodTimes

My first thought was that it was a good idea, but I'm not sure how sanitary it is. Egg shells can carry salmonella. And if any of the eggs were cracked it could cause cross contamination. @skunk69x292 жыл бұрын
@@Melanie-wi9is there are of course other variables besides the evil a-hole gene, but if you factor in how their day is going along with how they perceive said request, they probably are going to take offense to someone requesting something that they usually don't do. a lot may take it as a slight on how they have always been preparing the sandwich. if there even were people who were requesting it, I'd think by now they'd steam/heat up the bun on the grill, and it would be par for the course in the making of the sandwich. I think a lot is laziness on the part of the "cook", coupled with the clientele accepting what they are given as far as this stale ass bread and it not being steamed/grilled. I personally wouldn't be able to eat the sandwich without that bread being softened up a little. It makes a world of difference as far as functionality of eating the sandwich as a whole. It looks excellent otherwise, but like I said, all those delicious ingredients are not being "showcased" properly with that sad bread. I do hope they change the way they prepare those buns in the future. they'd probably sell more.

as a person who enjoys pork roll, i had a pork roll n cheese on a toasted rye bagel watch this video, pork roll is very unique in compared to other pork products bc it is lacto fermented very much like kimchi or sauerkraut, which gives it's tangyness. if you do try it dont go for the off brands go for the main 3 Trenton, Taylor, and Case there is a big jump in flavor between those 3 n brands like Hormel's n shoprite's version
@J8n3eyr32 жыл бұрын
Is this also known as "cloth baloney"? It has a much deeper flavor and different texture than other bologna.
@d.mat.zero65252 жыл бұрын
@@J8n3eyr3 they can be similar, baloney is normally tuff off cuts of pork beef and chicken that have a high gelatin content which is what is used to create the emulsification. While pork roll gets it it’s cuts from pork butt (which comes from the top shoulder) and belly. You will find hot dogs are very close to baloney. While good pork roll will be completely different. It’s kinda like sourdough of breads. Pork roll is done in a burlap sack normally. Baloney is done in a hard casing both have to be removed. I never had cloth baloney. My only guess is that when you smoke meats in sacks or cheese cloths instead of the hard casing. It will take on a more in depth flavor from the smoking process. Thats why i say the off brands of porkroll are very lack luster. Bc it’s mixed, fermented, then smoked. Good baloney (not really a fan of baloney) is smoked but normally supermarket brands will be hard cased and boiled or steamed.

@@d.mat.zero6525 Cloth bologna made in cloth at the local butcher is dense and all beef. It is much better than a hot dog. Everything my local butcher puts out tastes better bought at his counter than when I buy his products from the local market. It's magic.
@d.mat.zero65252 жыл бұрын
@@J8n3eyr3 yeah lol. That is the “magic” of having a butcher. I cant stand supermarket meats. Again i have never had case baloney. It is definitely something that i would try!! Especially since it’s all beef.

People won’t believe it until they try it but this exact meat cooked with oatmeal raisin cookies for the buns is DEVINE. In the old days they put mayo on it as well & going back even further in the depression era they used mayo & onions. I’ve tried all ways & I prefer just the pork in warm oatmeal raisin cookies. It tastes good with just plain oatmeal cookies but the raisins add a lot to it & pair really well with the pork.

I grew up in Bucks County, PA a northern suburb of Philly. I love Taylor or Casey's pork roll. Yes, fry a couple slices until crispy fry an egg slap a piece of New Yorker American cheese all on a hard/ or Kaiser roll. Nothing like a central north east Kaiser/ hard roll.

I used to get a breakfast sandwich from a Diner/truck stop in Trenton NJ near the Trane and American Standard companies. It was called the Belly Buster. Two of everything. Two fried eggs, Two pork roll slices, two sausage patties, two slices of cheese and two slices of bacon on a Kaiser Roll. Still to this day, that was the best breakfast sandwich i've ever had..
