American pro baseball players in Japan during previous century . To win, they had to learn how to lose. Some were roiled by it.

Thank you for the video..Leon Lee is my Uncle...I was there in 1985 and had a wonderful time and enjoyed Japanese Baseball games. My Uncle has to be ranked right up there as one of the All Time Great Americans in Japan Ball. He endure the tradition and sport there.

This is quite old. I think after Ichiro broke the single season hit record here, they are more open to let American players excel.

Leon Lee could always hit. He was an exceptional middle linebacker at Grant High school too.

Keep in mind that this documentary is super old and outdated. People and society changed in both the US and Japan. Things about foreign players in Japan is different now.

If an American baseball fan wants to know about the Good, Bad & Ugly when it comes to Japanese baseball, He should read "Slugging It Out In Japan" by Warren"Cro" Cromartie.

Leon Lee impressed me. It must have been difficult for him as well but he came across as a professional. Good on him.

here only the World Series' managers and The Manager of the year in MLB who are applicable above: Jim Tracy, Charlie Manuel, Don Zimmer, Bobby Valentine (managing), and Davey Johnson. And Japan's Emperor honored and gave a big medal to Tommy Lasorda in 2008.

There's the difference. In America if a Japanese player were kicking everyone's ass, they wouldn't say that he needs to be restrained in order for the American players to save face. They would tell the American players they better work harder and get better.

There are a lot of excellent managers and coaches in MLB who played baseball in Japan. because they have experiences to think deeply and seriously in foreign country "what baseball is." unlike those guys of this video (Steve Hammond) but like japanese.

i think the contrast between the white american views on japan baseball on how they are treated and how they cope compared to the black american outlook just seemed so funny and ironic to me.
@groomedtodie10 жыл бұрын
Haha. I totally see what you mean. The black dude has been doing it a decade though, so he's already gone through what the white dudes at struggling with. Still, the white guy is saying that no amount of money is worth it, while the black guy said fuck it and embraced their culture.

Black know how to accept other people and they know how not to be conceited around other cultures.

Good god, this was made in 1987. Just the look of it was dated, but damn. Hell, even half of the team names have changed since then.

@bphutchins (the rest) You can easily find a video on the net, MLBcom's video documentary "Yakyu: Japan's game". Also Wikipedia "Baseball in Japan". About the "racist" aspect, of course, there are lots of racists and racism in both countries. I appreciate your interests about our, Japanese game.

Steve Hammond reminded me of Jack Elliot in Mr. Baseball. "Baseball can't end in a GD TIE!!" No amount of money is worth this! Leon Lee kind of made himself out to be a martyr. Hey, if that's where you have to go to extend your career and make money, more power to you I guess!

@bphutchins >baseball >was imported to Japan >during the occupation after WW2. No. That's absolutely wrong. The Japanese have loved baseball regardless of the USA's culture AT ALL, since 1880', 1890's... During WW2, they were playing it without any English words, e.g. "out", "safe", "strike", "pitcher".. Because English were illegal back then, but baseball itself was NOT ILLEGAL. Because they took it as "OUR GAME", like Judo, Sumo, karate... (continued..)

do not argue which one is racist or not that would be endless. by the way,randy bass was best american baseball player in japan ever!
