I had no idea that this big of a message was behind this song. This puts BTS in a whole other light for me. Such a tragedy and such a beautiful way to try to let people know while being suppressed. Thank you for telling me about this guys. And thank you for watching with me. Let the memories of those lost live on!

The Italian ARMY explanation was even more accurate and incredible than this... I know u cannot react to that now, but I'm glad you at least saw this one 💜 Ps: in the laundry scene, the clock signs the exact time the Sewol Ferry started sinking... 😥 BTS really needed to do this in a settle way cause the governament (before having the impeachment and fall) right after the tragedy, was blacklisting every artist (movie producers, singers, Rappers, actors, etc) if someone was showing support to this cause or to the families of the victims... In Fact BTS every now and then donated in private to the association supporting the families of the tragedy... They needed to do it in secret!

As the Italian Army explanation points out, it is more complete, it allows a better understanding of the video due to the many signals it has. As you point out, they and their CEO donated money but for some years it was secret, after the President's removal, the information was leaked. Last year a reporter interviewed some of the parents of the boys who passed away, they revealed that before the end of 2014 the members of BTS and the CEO of the company visited them and kept them company. BTS was a group that was just beginning, with many obstacles along the way, the oldest of them was barely 21 years old and they took risks despite the "persecution" that the government of then did against artists who demonstrated in the case of the ferry

The laundry scene really gets me because the washer windows look like windows on the ships and the camera sways like if it's on the water. Such a sad and beautiful video.

In my opinion the laundry scene also represents the event happening. When the washing machine spins, the movement represents the ship capsizing and, the image of Jin looking through it represents one of the victims looking out the window as the ship sinks.

Thankyou for taking the time to react to this. I am a 60 year old Aussie mum. I happened to be in Korea with my daughter when this happened and it was heartbreaking to see at the time. I found myself there again 2 years later and I have such a vivid memory of seeing the parents of the lost children protesting in the streets, seeking answers - 2 years after the tragedy! I remember standing on the side of the road watching parents walking in the rain holding pictures of the deceased children, begging for answers. I cried so much that day and everytime I hear this song or watch the video, the scene replays in my mind. I hope you can understand why this song has remained in the charts in Korea since the day it was released. It is a song with such a powerful message, delivered in a beautiful way. It’s worthy to note that when BTS released this song, they were not the mega stars they are now - they took a huge risk recording this - it could have literally been the end of their careers. The fact that they felt so strongly about it to risk their own careers just further points to how amazingly aware they are. Things like this is the reason I have proudly been ARMY since they debuted in 2013 and I will go to my grave with that same conviction.

when i first watched BTS perform Spring Day on their NPR Tiny Desk Concert, i was so moved by how beautiful the song was and wanted to learn about the translated lyrics. when i found out it was about the Sewol ferry tragedy, i looked up the videos/news relating to it, stumbling across a video that a devastated father had shared of his very vibrant, energetic teenage son's final recording addressing his family while in a cabin within the ferry with his classmates (who were also filmed as the ferry began to tilt with water seeping into the halls and cabins milling about looking for life vests), deeply frightened, as he was coming to a panicked realization that he was going to die. this teenage boy - who seemed like a whip-smart, stylish, outspoken, handsome and capable young jock - anxiously documented everything around him, describing how his teachers (who were also among those who lost their lives) were trying their best to keep everyone calm, reminding them to listen to the captain's orders (the cowardly captain who later caused the deaths of 304 people - 250 of which were students). this same teenage boy asked his classmates if they wanted to record any last words... some appeared to be in disbelief, continuing to trust that they would be saved, others sat quietly frightened, trying to reach their families on cell phones with poor reception, if any at all (many of those cell phones were recovered at the bottom of the ocean throughout the course of the weeks following the tragedy). it was heart-crushing to watch the teenage boy's video, but if his father wanted us to watch what his son and his son's classmates had endured in their final moments of life so not to forget him/them, then it felt like an obligation not to look away (bawling my eyes out for sure). the only ones who survived were the ones who chose not to listen to the captain/crew, who were telling passengers to stay where they were. as to the yellow ribbons, if you look up pictures from the weeks and months following the Sewol tragedy, you'll see that thousands of people visiting the site attached yellow ribbons nearby, initially as a sign of hope for the return of the missing, mourning, sympathy - before becoming symbolic of a movement, with nationwide protests often lead by the victims families, in defiance of the gov, questioning its competency (the president, who was later impeached). as i tried to absorb what had occurred, it was then that i became aware of the extent it's ingrained into the culture that children be dutiful and unconditionally abide by their elders...albeit, in this instance, that trust was completely taken advantage of, unnecessarily. BTS members are a very respectful group of guys, rooted in their culture, but they're unafraid to find ways to inspire youth to speak their truth, to courageously "love yourself" in the face of suppression or attacks from haters/detractors. and at a time when Korean artists were discouraged from directly addressing the Sewol tragedy, BTS found a way, thru symbolism in their mv, to honor the students who lost their lives on that tragic spring day. Spring Day is consistently chosen as among a top favorite BTS song. on another note, watching your very kind reaction along with the Spring Day explanation video (it's been a while since i watched it last), it dawned on me that BTS used the washing machines/dryers messaging in Spring Day for their Permission To Dance mv (meant to uplift those suffering thru the pandemic, in hope for a better days to come, when we all may be free of masks/the pandemic), where the purple balloons signify the ARMY fan base, but also seems to subtly acknowledge the effects of lives lost due to the pandemic as well.

I have to comment here, for me (and I think a lot of us who are older fans), Spring Day was the song that cemented our love and support for these guys. I am in my 40s and I have gone through a lot in life. To find a group of young artists who, not only entertains you, but teaches you the values of loving yourself, loving your friends and family, thinking and acting POSITIVELY, is a breath of fresh air. I first saw them in the entertainment news in 2017 when they, seemingly out of nowhere, won their first Billboard Music Awards for Best Social Artist. I started watching their MVs and listening to songs like Not Today, Dope and Fire - all catchy tunes with affirming messages, just blew me away. Let's just say, I needed to hear them at the time. Then I heard Spring Day. That's it, I was committed. Never thought I'd be here. I remember the Sewol tragedy as it was in the news then. If you google it, there are plenty of news articles and documentations of it. It was horrific. I also remember reading years after that people who tried to raise their voices against the government for their extremely poor handling (not to mention gagging a lot of people from speaking out) were jailed/sanctioned. Their then President was voted out 2 years after that partly because of her government's response to it (there were also corruption, incompetency etc. which kinda all related, IMO).

When I came across this song, I was a crying mess, even if the only Korean words I understand in the lyrics were “I miss you” (if translated in english). I thought theres something in this song that pierces through. Then I googled translate the lyrics and that explains it. I lost my child (though not because of the same tragedy) when he was only 2 months old after I gave birth. A lot of people, even friends are saying that one day I’ll forget about him, so no need to be sad and just cheer up. That was the most painful word I have ever heard. That scene in the dryer really touched me. You can never forget… And you will never forget because they are a part of you. A piece of you. I am missing him everyday… and though the pain has lessened, still remembering that day I lost him (while in my arms) hits me. He is in heaven now, and I know he is the happiest. And that thought makes me go on. So please, if you have experienced loss. Dont ever forger them. There may be far away now but they are in our hearts…. A L W A Y S.

BTS are not idols or Gods to me and many ARMYs, as someone can think. They think "these crazy fans are worshiping BTS and they lost their minds." To me they are decent people who do their best to be their best selves and use the spotlight they are in to be an example and spread positivity and love. They make ARMY want to be better people and work harder, spread positivity and maintain mental health. I don't see any reasons for them to get hate but yet they do get it. This is the reason ARMY is overprotective sometimes and the reason why ARMY supports them with streams, album sales and so on at best of their ability. These are the people we need but barely deserve to be leaders of generation and nowadays pop icons

Thank you for reacting to the explanation vid - Spring Day is considered the queen -- it came out in 2017 and it is still in the charts-- BTS was really brave to write this song - it was only recently confirmed that Spring Day was written to commemorate the tragedy-- the sewol tragedy happened in 2014 and any artists in S. Korea who commented abt the tragedy then faced being black listed by the govt --- and they were just starting out - i saw somehwere the director of snowpiercer was one of the artists in the list of blacklisted artists by the govt -- the president then had since been taken from office, was arrested and is in jail, same with the captain of the Sewol Ferry --- the whole tragedy haunted me and it was horrible watching the agonizing cries of the parents who lost their children unexpectedly and they could have been saved if not for the negligence of the govt and coast guard --- Big hit and BTS donated to the families of the victims -- i really appreciate your reaction - 🙏💜👍

I hope you will watch the video done by Italian army about "what you still don't know about spring day and the sewol tragedy". I personally think it is a more thorough, factual, and accurate explanation. There are several points in the bulletproof Vibes interpretation of specific scenes that I really disagree with. I think the Italian army's understanding of some of the scenes is better. Italian army video also gives a lot of in depth information about the tragedy itself.

At the time of the tragedy, any artist who spoke out about this was blacklisted. Many other artists also creatively dedicated songs/performances to the victims. In one clip where JK is standing in front of the carousel, if you compare pictures of the color of the ship after age has eaten the paint and rust, it looks almost the same, as if the carousel had been in the sea. At the beginning the sound V hears isn't a train sounding but a ships horn. Italian Army's video goes into even more detail but she talks super fast and so pausing for the subtitles is a must. Thank you for reacting to this.

Even though you’ve watched this one, I do recommend also watching the explained by Italian Army. It explains the disaster and aftermath more, as well as more thoroughly examining the symbolism in the MV, in particular the carousel (You Never Walk Alone is significant), the laundry scene, and the shoes. Also note the sonar ping in the opening of the song, and the way the train scenes with RM have an underwater look. I respect these young men beyond words, and the artistic team they work with are worthy of them.

In case you didn't know this is not the fist time BTS has "spoken" out against something going on. Their early songs spoke out against the unreasonable expectations adults have for students. (No more dream, N.O.) They talk about materialism/consumerism. (Spine Breaker) There are so many more. BTS is willing to talk about things that most people, especially those in the spot light, shy away from. (Loneliness, mental health, status and privilege, and many more) I stan them for life. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Many took their lives because they could not deal with what they witnessed and the survivors' guilt. It is important to note that Koreans did not take it lying down, hence the disembarkment from the train. The President was imprisoned for her suppressing the truth and other crimes. This song became so beloved by the Korean gp that it has never left the charts since 2017! It's the longest running song in the history of the K-charts. RM wrote this song while sitting in a park thinking about how those must be missing friends. The band took a lot of risks to basically call out the gorvernment on the handling of this incident. This song is BTS. Peace.

Every time I watch this explanation video I can't help but cry. Thank you so much for looking deeper into this song. It really is so special, not only to BTS and ARMY but also the entire South Korea who are still fighting today for justice about the sinking incident. BTS almost got blacklisted for speaking up and supporting the families of the tragedy that they even secreted donated money to help them. If the government caught them I don't know what would have happened to BTS's career, our guys are truly rare gems who just want to stand up for justice and give hope to people without a voice.

I've seen this MV a lot of times and I still got goosebumps every time. Thanks for reacting to BTS. This was a controversial BTS song and a brave song by BTS as well. This song is something that can be passed on to generations after generations. It's not just a beautiful song but it also has a strong message. This song has been in the Korean hit chart up to now since it's released and never goes out and every spring it just goes up. IN the Dear Class 2020 they sang this song in honor to the graduates. It was believed that if not for the tragedy it was their graduation last 2020. BTS are using their platform to raise awareness about injustices, social issues, mental health, about problematic systems and a lot more through their music. It may look fun but if you get know the translations and meaning of their songs you will be amazed how brilliant their minds are and the fact that they are hands-on when it comes to their music. I salute BTS for being able to express and tell their story. It has served it's purpose. So proud of these brave, courageous and genius Bangtan Boys. You may also want to react to their song NO and Bapsae where they are talking there about the system and injustices. pls check on the links below. I think it’s a turning point for fans to realize what a piece of art Spring Day is. For a deeper dive into both the video the actual tragedy and the politics watch ItalianArmy who deeply dives into the timeline (this is much harder and 3x as long as the one you watched which is a good short version it includes things like footage of the parents begging for help etc absolutely one of the best KZfaq documentary pieces I’ve seen but very very emotional). It’s hard because hundreds died and it was so deeply preventable and they even black listed artists who mentioned it so BTS has always been cautious about talking or directly admitting connections but this video was only about 2/3 of the sewel references there are many more throughout the video. The politics are global and the media was also responsible for the coverup. Years later protests over this and the president led to her resignation and imprisonment. Fighting corruption is necessary. Keep in mind kpop idols almost never get political but BTS does and did. It’s why we do often will recommend an explanation video after some songs or mvs because there is so much they put in. Beapsae sounds catchy and the choreography is … ahem… a lot of crowd pleasing of hip thrusts (it’s a fan favorite) but it’s one of the social commentary songs … well also it’s a bop. Anyhow it’s a painful joy to see tractors learn the truth about Spring Day etc.

Thank you for taking time to rea search this song, as others mentioned there is another one out out by Italian Army( I believe) That one has more actual info on the Tragedy and is extremely heartbreaking but so needed to truely begin to understand where BTS is coming from. I appreciate your respectfulness and humility as you begin this BTS journey. I hope you continue on to learn more about all the meanings behind so many of their songs. There’s tons of content to cover. Keep it up. They do a great little medley of their older and new stuff from their birthday celebration they had in June( 8 years). That might be another good one for you to watch!

Hi Cliff, thanks for a very heart-felt touching reaction. I appreciate the respect you showed to not only #BTS but also the #sewolferrysurvivors. This tragedy cut through the Korean populace like a knife though #butter. ‘#Spring Day’ is from BTSs 2017 album ‘#YouNeverWalkAlone’, a repackage of their second Korean-language studio album, ‘#Wings; (2016). The track has been charting in the ‘Top 50’ section for 5 consecutive years in Gaon’s Digital Charts. ‘Spring Day’ also charted at no. 44 in ‘2021 Gaon Year-End Digital Chart’ for five consecutive years. The song also proved its popularity by being dubbed the most-streamed song of all time in MelOn’s history! #BTS #BTSARMY #SpringDay #sewolferrysurvivors #BORAHAE I Purple You 💜

Cliff Beats, check out the moment between 4:04 and 4:05 on the original mv, specifically the top of the frame above Suga, RM and Jimin’s heads. There is a mirror reflection that makes them look like they are all underwater. Gave me chills when I first noticed because the gang already looked like ghosts coming for a visit. But it could be that they needed to add more to the top and sides (also mirrored) of the original frames to allow for greater camera zoom out.

Please also react to the ItalianArmy explained too. It goes much deeper into both the tragedy and the symbolism shown in the video. It also covers the social aspects and aftermath of what happened. Italian Army actually travelled to Korea and met with the victims families whilst she was there. She has been praised for her documentary and appeared on Korean TV for an interview.

Thank you for your thoughtful reaction. After this MV came out the then Korean president Park Geun-hye blacklisted BTS. Later she was removed from office for corruption and is serving a 25 year sentence. BTS isn't afraid to take risks. Social, mental health, are issues included in their discography.

Now that you have absorbed the MV and this background video, there are 2 other performances worth watching... they have done many live dance performances that are so good (I like the MNET one best); there are also some love vocal performances also, like the one on their Tiny Desk Concert..... each one just builds on the impact the song has made.... worth the watch.

When V sings your my bestfriend in the video, he is speaking about a true friend who committed sucide, it was a thing among idols, who could not take it no longer, BTS did not swear the song was for the Sewol Ferry Trauma, but it fits. for years the song is #1 in Korea.

If you loved snowpiecer you may like another Korean movie call “Train to Busan” . I hate zombie movies but this one is excellent. You really are drawn into the story by the characters and storyline. It was made in 2016 and is filmed in Korea ( could be anywhere) it has enough blood and guts to tell the story without being over the top, you get to love or hate the characters and will shed a tear. Highly recommended.

HI, you really need to react to This Is BTS by Xcelest as well as BTS from nobodys to Legend 2019 and This is BTS Army by same Xcelest. These will really help you understand why they are the biggest kpop no infact the biggest group in the World. Why they have so many fans and they have broken and set soo many records and achieved things no other kpop group has come near to achieving. They are really something else and have a wide discography thats covers music of every genre. They are also the only Kpop artist to sell out Wembly Stadium. Their concerts sell out in minutes and they are loved by many of different races and age groups bcz of their messages and positivity. You should really check out those documentaries💜💜
