Thank you to everyone who recommended this video. I had no idea the extent of the Sewol ferry tragedy and am heartbroken by what occurred. Learning about the number of people, including 250+ children, who died in such a horrific way, was very hard to watch. I commend BTS, music video director Yong-seok Choi, and Big Hit Entertainment for being courageous enough to make the music video and shed some light on the situation. I am aware that the song was not necessarily written with the tragedy in mind, but hearing "you're my best friend" hits a little differently after watching this video. I hope you all have a great rest of your day 💜 Borahae

Definitely. And as almost all BTS songs and music videos - they can always be interpreted in different ways - there's no right or wrong. Only what makes sense and gives meaning to you. I do love thinking about their intentions behind a song or video. I usually refer to the meaning and story throughout the albums, or in terms of videos with my BU-glasses on if it's part of the Bangtan Universe (this isn't). Eventhough these "explanation videos" are technically only fan theories, I think a lot of the details are too precise to be ignored. She did such a great job. (she even went to Korea and visited some of the families who lost their child and helped out). Another song that I hold so dear to my heart, but is not "heavy" and sad as such like this song, is "Blood, Sweat & Tears". It's probably my favorite BTS music video... no actually, it's my favorite music video EVER. There are a TON of references that I think you'll both find interesting. Maybe you need an "easier" song for the next one, but BST is definitely one you can look forward to!!! I'm not even over-selling it. And it may be easier for you to pick up on if you remember to think about symbolism, mythologies, philosophies, metaphors etc.. There's excellent explanation video to this video too that I'd absolutely recommend.

Borahae 💜 Hi I would like to forward a comment posted by one of the student survivors of the tragedy to another reactor who watched this explanation video... I truly hope he does not mind - but it was so touching - and I feel that you have reacted to this song with such respect and understanding that I would like you to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his comment in full - unedited - from 4 months ago............ "I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?. Feeling depressed, having suicidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things. The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident."

This is always always heart wrenching to watch, especially from a parent perspective. Needless to say, I was crying as I watched. But this is an important video to watch to understand this song and the thought & message behind it (although not verbally confirmed by BTS). This is also why this song has never left the Melon Music charts since it’s release. This is the Queen of all songs and will always remain in our heart no matter which part of the world we are from. - The ferry was carrying more than four times the weight it was originally designed for to make extra money per trip. Most of the illegal modifications placed the weight at the top and when it shifted it made the ferry tip over. - It wasn't the usual captain that day. He had raised concerns about the safety onboard and had been removed for it. - The captain on the day is currently serving 36 years for murder and several crew members were convicted of murder, negligence, violating marine laws, etc. (This is all from the very detailed and graphic Wikipedia page on the tragedy) A lot of BTS's mvs have a huge amount of complex details just like Spring Day and it's worth watching the explanation videos for them (Like Blood, Sweat & Tears and Idol). For some of their songs explanations are even very important to understanding the song (Like Baepsae and UGH!).

A few interesting things that you may not know/realize: - Bong Joon-Ho, the director of, "Snowpiercer," who was not-so-secretly blacklisted by the Park Administration, is also the director of, "Parasite," winner of multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, the 1st South Korean film & director to do so. Director Bong is well-known for his films' thematic critiques of the alienation & inequalities of capitalism. "Snowpiercer," was done as a collaboration with Hollywood production companies, in no small part because he was effectively locked out of the S. Korean industry. Personally, I think one can draw a LOT of parallels between the careers of Bong & BTS - e.g. scorned & ridiculed at home by the media establishment, under constant threat of retaliation by the conservative government for legitimate criticism, recognized & praised by international audiences for both artistry & depth of meaning, then finally lauded in South Korea as hometown heroes & truth-tellers. - President Park, the impeached authoritarian South Korean president, is actually the daughter of assassinated president Park Chung-Hee, who seized power in a military junta in the 1960s and imposed martial law. Again, there are a number of striking parallels between BTS' story and the history of S. Korea under military dictatorship, but suffice to say that if you eventually get around to reacting to BTS' cover of the song, "Come Back Home," by Seo Taiji & Boys, you'll be astounded at how, in the words of Mark Twain, "history doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes."

I was in Korea on holidays when this happened and it was the most gut wrenching thing I have ever experienced. So much untruths we’re being told to parents about their children. Those children did not have to die. I returned about 2 years later and I remember vividly standing by the road side watching parents demonstrating, carrying pictures of their deceased children, demanding answers from the government. I could do nothing more than stand there in the rain and cry. Even now, I have both of those moments vividly in my memory. We can only hope that something like this NEVER happens again. The message of this is one of the main reasons this song has not left the Korean charts since it was released. It holds a very precious place in the Korean public’s hearts.

It doesn't matter how many times i see this (or other) explanation video, or the sewol documentary, it always brings me to tears. And yes, I also drew parallels to the sinking of the titanic. In one case it's the crew instructing the passengers to stay put in their seats/cabins, in the other case it's crew literally locking the lower class passengers in so that they can't reach the life boats. It's heartbreaking, every time. Your thoughts/instincts regarding the first scene are not off. In fact, this is precisely the interpretation that other analysis/explanation videos offer for it. "Survivor's guilt" leading to suicidal thoughts. So this is one of the scenes that can be taken in different ways (some others in there, too, btw, i've seen different interpretation of the birthday party, of the match-lighting-scene, the walking up the staircase,...). but at the end of the day, even these "different" interpretations still are not too far from each other, in that they are different aspects of grief, loss, and anything that can come with that. Both in general, and also specifically related to this incident. Winnie and Rosie coming for a good cuddle, awww. Watching this video definitely calls for lots of cuddles to get through it. Thank you for going through this with us 💜 CFA

Just some further information about the Hillsborough Disaster so you can see the similarities between Hillsborough and Sewol. To summarise, the incident happened in 1989 when Liverpool FC were playing away against Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield. The game had already kicked off and the stadium was full, but Liverpool fans were still allowed into the stadium (at the end assigned to them) to alleviate “crowd trouble” at the turnstiles. Back then, the stadium were standing terraces only and at pitch level there were high fences to keep supporters off the pitch. People were pushed into one another, falling and being trampled as they were forced forward by the press of those being allowed in. They were crushed up against the fences. 94 people died in the incident (and 3 would die later), and over 700 were injured. Back then we didn’t have the internet, so reporting of the incident was through traditional media which lay the blame at the Liverpool fans for being hooligans, and drunks, and even going so far as to accuse the fans of doing shocking things to one another in the midst of the crush. The coroners report found the deaths to be accidental. The victims families and survivors rejected this finding and formed a group to bring about further inquests, and in the 2014 - 2016 inquest, it was found that the supporters were unlawfully killed by gross negligence failure to fulfil duty of care by the police and ambulance services. The inquest also pointed to the design of the stadium to be a contribution to the fatal crush. I was 9 at the time and have vague memories of news reports and newspaper articles, and obviously I didn’t fully understand it all at the time, but I do remember the negative reporting of the Liverpool supporters. Through the campaigning of the victims families and survivors over the years, the truth was revealed of not only the failures on the day, but also the extent of the cover up and corruption that followed.

BTS has always stood for fighting against corruption and the wrong of society since the beginning of their debut. One of the earliest examples is their debut song No more dream and the continuation of this song NO, both of which focus on the problem of the flawed Korean education system and how children are made to learn like they are some type of machines by their parents and the education system whilst not being able to get the freedom to think and act the way they want. You should react to both of them. No more dream is one of the most interesting debut songs ever and NO is just an underrated masterpiece!

The scene with the parent requesting the truth and bowing down to the floor... It is too much to bear. That type of bow is (depending on the context, it can be an act of thankfulness) but in this situation is even self deprecating, lowering yourself down, allowing the other to do whatever they want to do with you. I don't know how's it called in Korean, in Japanese is called dogeza, and I was looking if it was well explained somewhere, but I just leave this: dogeza "is an uncommon deference only used when one is deviating greatly from daily behavior". Really, from at least a Korean and Japanese perspective, doing that is... too much. I'm choking and can even think what I'm writing, but yeah, just wanted to emphasize the pain that can be felt just in that "small" act. (you put your knees on the floor for nobody who's alive, it is a form of humiliation).

Here in Europe (Germany, Belgium and France) the Sewol disaster was on every news channel, both the first hours after the capsizing and then the struggles of the victims' families that followed. BTS and these students were the same age so they must have been shocked by it, too. Even two years after the capsizing, it was really difficult and downright career killing if you publicly stood with the victims. So BTS and Big Hit took a huge risk, esp as their company was finally making revenue, and that is why they never really acknowledged that the song is about the Sewol disaster, even though everything hints to it. From the lyrics, the imagery and even a live performance where the backdrop and floor showed underwater images.

Can I recommend a cover of Spring Day that's so beautiful it should be watched by everyone? It depicts even further the sadness and heartbreak behind the message of the song. It's a cover by Song So Hee that was sang in Immortal Songs 2 a Korean program that pays tribute to big songs. That episode was all dedicated to BTS songs produced by PDogg (BTS's main producer). It's also sort of a competition between the people who cover the songs better. It's also about an accident in China, when a couple gave their little son to others before falling down from a mountain top in a broken cable car. The song writer adopted the son and wrote this song from his perspective. Dimash's cover of this song brought tears to my eyes everytime I hear it.

I'm so so happy that you guys finally react to spring day mv explanation. When the video mention the sewol tragedy, it reminds me of how i used to follow the news and i want to cry everytime i listen to spring day because of it. The reason why spring day is one of my comfort song is because i could feel the boys' sympathy towards the victim's family and the survivors, just how i sympathize with them. Whenever i revisit the tragedy, i always think of the students, both victims and survivors. The victims got their future robbed, and the survivors felt guilty because they are allowed to continue their life while their friends don't even get that chance and the adults tell them to 'forget' in order for them to move forward. Sewol tragedy is an awful one, caused by greed and negligence by the people of power at that time. Bts is not afraid to critict or even diss these people through their songs, and that is why i know that i stan the right group. Great video as always 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

This is the bravest BTS song ever. This could break or make their career but I salute the courage they showed for coming up such great music that can be passed on to generations to generations. In the Dear Class 2020, BTS sang this song honoring the graduates of class 2020. It was believed that if not for the tragedy those victims mostly students have graduated that same year too that's why they chose to sing this song.

BTS has high risk of being blacklisted because they speak and never do ignore so 'am I wrong' is a cool track that says if you see the news then ignore it. That's what's not normal, this song has explained videos, including lyrics, performances to president Park. (same as in Spring Day) and the Korean Ministry of Education.

Thanks Andrew for doing this explanation reaction 💜, really appreciate you looking into what the music really means and your sensitive take on the subject. I actually hadn't seen the whole Italian army explanation before (only watched through the opening scene) but I appreciate now that it really shows the emotional impact. That footage of the parents pleading with the rescue divers made me cry...I just can't imagine... It is amazing the depth of BTS's songs and MVs, definitely intentional that everyone can make their own personal interpretation along with references to other books/movies/etc. I think I've watched 2 other explanation videos and each one had some new ideas and insight (and Doolset's translations too- sometimes she has ideas that others don't include). The director for Snowpiercer Bong Joon-Ho has also said he's a fan of BTS, and they do have overlap in their social commentary- you haven't gotten to BTS's other social commentary songs yet, but they have quite a few (Baepsae, Spine breaker, N.O, even their debut song No More Dream). You've probably heard of the movie Parasite that won the Oscar for best picture last year- another social commentary movie by Bong Joon-ho (it was amazing. also not as sad/depressing as Train to Busan which also had some themes of social commentary- yeah seems Korean govt/society has a lot of issues, or I guess every country does to some extent. So it's great having popular music that brings awareness and motivates people to try and make the world better).

I'm glad you chose this video because it seems to be the most comprehensive of the three. I think humans go through a certain stage where they think their tear wells have dried up and they simply cannot cry any longer. A tragedy like this proves it all wrong. By the way, it just occurred to me that we were all watching a video containing spoken Korean and mostly subtitled in Korean, which was then subtitled in English, subtitled again in Italian and narrated by an Italian speaker, and made into a reaction video by English speakers.

This version does focus more on the Sewol Ferry disaster then the mv. It's still a great video, but she did miss and/or did not completely explain certain parts very well. There are parts I personally don't think she got quite right. I suggest that you also watch "bulletproof vibes" explanation. It focuses only on the mv. You don't have to react to it, but at least watch it on your own. You were right about the first scene with V. he is suffering from 'Survivors Guilt'. Side Note: Spring Day has never left the Korean 'Melon Music charts', it has charted for 233 consecutive weeks as of today and it is still charting.

If you delve further into BTS content, you'll note that BTS themselves view this song 'Spring Day' in different contexts, not just one that's necessarily sad, but because they know this song is especially popular with ARMY, they've added this song to their repertoire during online performances [since COVID] and as BGM [shorthand for background music] when they're feeling sentimental (e.g. Bon Voyage season 4). It's pretty unanimous that this song is the Queen in their repertoire and if you take away any Korean from your time with BTS, it should be "Bogoshipda" [I Miss You].

Thank you for taking the time to learn about BTS’s artistry and the meaning behind Spring Day. It’s already a beautiful song but when you look past the surface, the meaning and intention are astounding. I also had not watched Italian Army’s explanation about it yet so I’ll make sure to give them a view too. A lot of their music is like this. If you enjoyed the attention to detail they put into this, you might enjoy the Bangtan Universe/BU. Spring Day was also part of the BU but had social issues included in it too. The BU was an ongoing fictional storyline that connected each album era-Wings, Love Yourself and Map of the Soul. There’s literary and psychology references made in the MVs and songs throughout the eras. It begins with I Need U. As a writer, it’s incredible how they connected it all.

If you really want to watch a Korean explanation of Spring Day or a number of other BTS songs including Suga's solo work, you will get a a far clearer explanation from DKDKTV. They do their show in English but provide a true Korean perspective of both the tragedy and the Korean reaction to grief, with a focus on this tragedy. Like many of BTS songs the lyrics contain many Korean references. You do yourself a disservice if you don't check out DKDKTV on BTS lyrics.

Andrew and Caitlyn thank you for watching this very emotional explanation. You were correct when you said you thought it was about missing or losing a friend too. Spring Day is a double meaning masterpiece. Rm wrote the lyrics while he sat on a bench in a park and thought of how much he missed his friends. Suga wrote his verse thinking about a close friend he had lost to prison/drugs. So the longing for and grieving friendships thing is what the actual song is about. The MV tho is a whole other meaning as you've seen, too many things in the MV point to it being about Sewoll for it not to be. As to the whole tragedy I think the thing that angers me most was that the captain and crew heartlessly abandoned those kids after instructing them to remain where they were. If they had allowed them to get to safety and off the ship then they would have more than likely survived. Many of the kids that did survive ignored the instructions and jumped into the water or got to a deck they could be rescued from by the civillian fishing boats. The whole thing broke my heart and still does. I cry for the lost children whenever I hear Spring Day.

i feel like andrew and caitlyn may have been too young an army for the heavy stuff like spring day and i love that when its getting too heavy the dogs came out too, and they brought comfort for me too. with regards to bts and this particular song and MV, i would just like to add that although this is a memorial to those who died from that accident (its debatable if they really died of the accident or neglegence), the song is relatable to anybody who lost someone in their lives. they made it so intricate that even if you dont know about the sewol tragedy you can feel the message of loss and hurt but also that these 7 boys respecting your grief also like you to celebrate life and learn to live again. and thats huge because they have international fans that didnt know and probably didnt care about what happened in korea a few years ago, but the message was so clear right? and at the end of it all, after emerging the rabbit hole of this MV alone not only did you learn the huge loss in korea, you felt symphatetic to them because you understand grief. and somehow you when Jimin said back in 2020 that when youre sad and lost and lonely, theres someone in seoul thinking and cheering for you, you know its true because of songs like this.

This mv is amazing for many reasons, the feeling of missing, even mourning somebody is there for the song, the lirics evokes that. Still the song was written before the tragedie, the mv was made as an opportunity to talk about those moments of great troubles in the society, by also using all those art and literature references, that refer to the same kind of social inequalities

The former president of South Korea, Park Geun Hye, was impeached in 2016. She drove the Ferry Sewol tragedy to political issues and mobilized the media and government organizations to cover up the cause of the tragedy. She and the media drove the bereaved families to people who were crazy about compensation. I will never forget that when the Ferry Sewol tragedy happened, MBC News in Korea did not talk about rescuing the victims or the government's fault, and talked about how much compensation the family would receive. It shocked me. The families only wanted to find out the cause of the accident and to clarify the reason why the government blocked the rescue of the victims. Nothing has been revealed about the Ferry Sewol tragedy even now because there are still many subordinates left during the Park administration. Especially the media, which used to be the puppet of the Park administration, is still alive and attacking the current Korean government. According to an 2020 interview with a bereaved family of Ferry Sewol, BTS and their CEO, PD Bang, visited them about 200 days after the tragedy, and donated $100,000. BTS were also very young (most of the victims were the youngest member, Jungkook's age), and Big Hit didn't have much power and the financial situation wasn't good because it was before they gained popularity. Nevertheless, they did this at the risk of being blacklisted. At that time, because BTS released many songs criticizing Korean society(ex. Am I Wrong?, Baepsae), many ARMYs and even other fandoms were worried that they would be blacklisted. And... According to the family, one of the victims was ARMY. The families didn't know who the boys were at the time, but a few years later, when BTS became famous, the bereaved families said they realized that the boys were singers their child liked.

I'm so glad you watched this video, it gives a lot of context for Spring Day and just makes me appreciate song and bts even more! I wanna recommend 2 other videos connecting to the Sewol Ferry incident and Spring Day. One ist "The Sinking of the Sewol Ferry" by Jihoons Carat, it's incredibly informative about the tragedy and also explains the part the government and media had in making this an even more tragic event than it already had been. It's a very heartbreaking video though, so just a heads up for that. The second one is "Spring Day: What Does It All Mean" by Don't Worry I'm Not Afraid. It isn't that focussed on the Ferry incident and also goes into detail about the other symbolism in the video like Omelas or the Snowpiercer. It's a great analysis of the song and music video that I totally recommend to check out! I thought these might be interesting for you since I found them both incredibly well made and very meaningful, wether you react to them on camera or just for watching on your own time!

I have watched this documentary a few times. I cry every time when I hear Spring Day. It hurts so bad imagining those victims' disappointment right before they realized that the government sacrificed them. The hope dies the last. There is no doubt that they were full of hope that they will get help for sure))). Spring Day has left a very significant mark on my heart. It reminds me of the tragic death of my best friend who died this year from cancer and my loving brother who died suddenly from Covid 4 months later. They both were so young and SD represents them for me, too. The song reminds me of them and their precious soul. It always comforts me, I would say this song has become my therapist.

It's not a surprise that BTS considered it a personal issue, given that when it happened in 2014 JK would've been about the same age as the victims - he was still in high school, and Jimin and V I think graduated high school that year? They've always been big on talk about standing up for the youth and talking about social issues. And similar to you, I also hadn't heard about the Sewol ferry tragedy until I watched the explanation. It's a horrifying story and I'm glad awareness was brought to it not only by BTS but by all the artists and activists who were involved despite possible backlash. It's brave of them. This is a video interpreted as a tribute to the unfortunate tragedy that occurred in Korea in 2014. At that time, the president had no interest in saving the people from the disaster, but used it politically, discussed and decided on state affairs with a woman close to her personal relationship, and she was only interested in pursuing personal interests. Critics of the regime were blacklisted and treated unequal. BTS was hated by the government at the time for comforting and donating to the families of the victims of the disaster. After that, the angry people held candlelight protests for several months, and in that cold winter, millions of citizens peacefully protested the president and impeached the president.

It was on some of the nightly news shows but only as a snippet but since I was into Kdrama's and Kpop I was following the news through the internet and it was horrible. So sad they kept telling the children to stay in the cabins and not to leave or move, and pretty much left them. If the crew would of just gone back and gotten them and told them to leave the cabins it could of prevented a lot of the deaths! Still so sad about it :(

Remember these are in part interpretations too, unfortunately we'll never get a confirmation as (like I said in your Spring Day reaction video) it'll likely get them shadow banned (blacklisted) from music industry in South Korea... This explanation video I feel comes across at times as if it's all fact when it's a mix of factual and in part theory, so take some things with a pinch of salt like the connection of the wings album picture relating to the yellow ribbons for instance (that part in particular is a bit of a reach in my opinion, while as the carrousel with the ribbons I fully believe relates) and the pictures on their clothing at the end too (which I feel is even more of a reach again but yeah, only small parts I'm doubtful of.) I too have always related Tae putting his head to the tracks as a form of survivors guilt, which would apply still... Imagine being the survivor of a tragedy like that, it's not uncommon for them to feel like they don't deserve to live. ): Edit : I cried again ergh, practically every time I watch someone react to an explanation I end up crying Dx But yeah, I'm sure you can understand now why we call this song the queen and why she never leaves the Korean charts/gets boosted up with every BTS comeback. 💜

Please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the reason JK is the main character in this MV is because he is the same age as the students who died in the tragedy. Also, I have read that the shoes Jimin is holding are the same shoes students wear inside the schools in Korea. Once again, please correct me if I am wrong. As a foreigner I can only rely on what I have read. I love the scene where he is clearly searching desperately for something, but seems to almost exhale in relief after he goes through the door and sees his members. Also, we see him sitting alone on the train through the whole video, but at the end the camera pulls back and reveals that he was never really alone. It seems to say, if you feel alone and isolated, look around. "You never walk alone."

This video was amazing, although all I can think of now - since it appeared so close to the end - is the stupidity of "the glass ceiling controversy" that I had the unfortunate pleasure of learning about when I searched the term after I saw it @ 23:55

i hate watching this video, it always takes me back and makes me cry. it took so long for the families to achieve something resembling justice and it was just heartbreaking thinking about them and the children.

Hi! Thank you for reacting to BTS videos. Hope you can react to their "Magic Shop" performance in Seoul (with subtitle - the one uploaded by a certain Ulemj Tsendjav here in YT). Would love to hear your reaction to the song/lyrics of the song. More power on your channel! :)
