American Heliograph Model 1905 Demonstration

In this modern demonstration, an antique American Army Heliograph (Model of 1905) is used to successfully flash a (very short) message to an observer 18.4 miles away. The value of the video is in showing how the heliograph was configured and operated to signal long distances - not in my (pathetic) sending technique, which is painfully, painfully slow (and not Morse Code, either). In my defense, is the very first time I've ever used this machine to signal another person. This type of heliograph was developed by the United States Signal Service, and was manufactured by Julien Friez & Company, Keuffel & Esser, Dietzgen and other companies. This example was assembled from components from Julien P.Friez & Sons and Keuffel & Esser.

Great demo! Due to the cumbersome nature of transmission (and to ensure secrecy) they would have likely used codes, perhaps similar to the old biliteral or triliteral maritime codes.

Military users concerned with security typically used cipher disks, but the enciphered messages were still sent in Morse or the equipment. In this example, I'm emulating what the US Forest Service did, which is to use, essentially a "tap code" (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tap_code )

I have no idea how this object works. I have no idea how he transmitted a message. I thought he would use something like Morse code but he didn't, he just said the word and opened the flap

@@legionofregion8825 The audio was carried by the beam of light. Kind of like a string between 2 cans. You see, he opens the flap and produces the beam of light off the mirror, and the mirror is vibrated by his voice via a microphone attached to it. These vibrations in the light beam are detected at the other end and reproduced by a speaker attached to the receiving surface. Elementary. 😁

@@seeharvester kinda think you are wrong here because he is being listened way before he opens the vanes Plus at the end, the guy on the radio is calling back the lenght of flashes he just saw.

@@DoNotPushHere He's being facetious there are no vibrations caused by the operator's voice. Originally Morse code was used to send a message in this demonstration I'm not sure what they are trying to do no message was sent.
