People often ask us about how we include American history in our curriculum, especially in comparison to the history of Ancient Greece and Rome. Should we give American history more focus? Or, is it more important to study the civilizations that created and solidified classical education? Martin, Shane, Tanya, and Paul, the core crew, sit down to discuss these questions, and more, in today's episode of Classical Et Cetera. Watch now!

It was interesting to hear Martin speak about an Afrikaner. I am a South African Afrikaner myself. Glad to know you are not narrow minded Americans and that you study history from the right perspective. My husband and I want to pursue Classical Christian Education for our children. One of my qualms was a disproportionate amount of US history they would have to study if we used a US curriculum. The more I listen to your podcast, they more I am sold on choosing Memoria Press as our curriculum.

1. We brought out kids home from public school when the oldest was in 9th grade. All they had learned in history was the Civil War(mostly slavery related) and World War II(specifically Holocaust). I'm so glad they are learning a large world-view of history now. 2. Glad to hear Pinocchio is good! I just picked it up at a garage sale!

Great talk, guys! I do an entire year-long class with homeschool groups called "American Heroes." We spend the entire year doing the story of the American Revolution. From the colonies until George Washington goes home. The kids love it and gain an appreciation for out nation.

I wish y'all would put a list of recommendations in the description. 😅 I listen while doing dishes, and I keep having to pause to write stuff down.

We read Grapes of Wrath as a class my sophomore at my very rural Kansas public school in 1992😂. I would like to add that those 3rd -6th independent American History books that can be purchased with the grade packets are wonderful. I love sitting down doing Famous Men with my kids and allowing them to read about American history independently. Then we talk about what they learned. It's a hit in my home.

I also read Grapes of Wrath in 1992 in 11th grade in Kansas. I've been thinking about rereading it. I think we did Of Mice and Men in 9th?

Speaking of buying up books, I just bought up a set of Great Books of the Western World (60 vol version) in amazing condition at a great price. I already have one so let me know if anyone needs one.

What are your thoughts regarding historical fictional as a teaching tool? Michael and Jeff Shaara have done a reat job presenting history through stories.

I think it is great to provide a visual perspective of the times. Shaara does a great job of allowing you to see the history not just or read it. It’s a great way to get younger students invested in the history and then explore the individual figures deeper.
