Ever since Carhartt discontinued their original Detroit Jacket in favor of an updated one, I've been searching for a replacement. No real contenders existed for a short hem, simple, yet durable work jacket that is also made in the USA. So Heat Straps decided to make one: The Workhorse is the latest offering in the brands lineup of American made workwear and its basically perfect. 10oz waxed canvas, 100% wool lining, made in American from American components. It might be the last work jacket you'll ever need.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well and allows you to own less and own better.

Just ordered a 2xl.I can attest to Tin Duck as I have a 24 oz.trucker jacket.The tin duck is top quality materials and craftsmanship.I am 6'2" and 245lbs.I went with a 2xl which is the largest they make.With no back gusset it is tight to work in.Very stiff and rugged coat but lacks dexterity for a bigger guy.Im looking forward to The Workhorse to finish out my career until retirement.

The new dickies waxed Eisenhower is super close to this and half the cost as you mentioned. I have one and I like it, but there’s something off with the waxed fabric. It feel much lighter than the 10oz it claims. And it shows weird blotches where ever water hits it. Not bad for the price, but Carl’s seems higher quality for sure

Hey Carl, an interesting idea for the pocket linings could’ve been a thick-wake corduroy. I have a vintage peacoat and vintage schott bomber and both are super nice with the cord-lined pockets. And I’m sure they’d be less gross overtime with pockets lined in cord than fleece

I like front snaps like on my filson tin jacket.. If you are working on moving parts and it gets caught in something the snaps will automatically break free and it might give you an opportunity to get out of it. Unfortunately with 14oz of tin cloth and another 6 oz of canvas with no bi swing back it’s a real chore to move around in.

Great Jacket, I just got my XL from the second run, it's an amazing jacket, it's absolutely beautiful. Sizing: I also just got a Carhartt Men's Full Swing Relaxed Fit Washed Duck Insulated Traditional Coat in XL from work and it fits perfectly so I wear XL in Carhartts jackets, I can raise my hands over my head, there's plenty of room to layer, it's perfect, now I wear XXL in Filson and other button down shirts, but XL in the Filson Cruiser and I compared the measurements from my XXL Filson Alaska Guide shirt to the Workhorse and ordered the XL based on the measurements and your recommendations to size down and it fits nice and snug. Unfortunately that means there is no room to layer underneath, and I can't raise my arms above my head, so this jacket is a very nice thing to wear for style but it won't work to keep me warm when it's cold since I can't layer underneath it, and I can't really be able to work in it since sometimes I have to raise my hands above my head. Please tell guys from XL and up to wear their regular size, don't size down, I spent the entire wait period terrified it was going to be WAY too big, turns out it was a tiny bit too small. I do love it, and now I am even more determined to lose some weight so it fits better.

What would you say about sizing compared to the new detroit jacket? I have a large one with a bit of room to spare but the sizing chart on the heatstraps website is kind of confusing, especially in the chest measurement. There is an almost 16 inch chest size difference between both large jackets. definietely interested, but I want to make sure I get close to the correct size.

Hello Carl, I am a retired electrician from Denver, for 15? 20? Years I wore a Carhartt Santa Fe jacket (with the Lighter insulation) with a Carhartt zip hoodie, they don't make it in a work wear configuration (only the WIP crap) do you know of a equivalent jacket? Carhartt recommend the Detroit but the elastic waist is one of things I like about it that the Detroit doesn't have, also the slash pockets. Also need 2XLT size, thanks

Suggestion for your friends at Heat Straps. Make a modern version of the M-41 Field Jacket issued to U.S. Army soldiers during WW2. It is similar to the Detroit Jacket in cut and features. There are reproductions available but quality and authenticity are issues.

Love jackets, but I live in Houston, TX where we get 3 months out of the year to wear a jacket sporadically. The rest of the time it's 100% humidity and 95 degrees, so it feels like 110 degrees and full of sweat. However, we also get plenty of rainstorms, tropical storms, hurricanes. So what I need is a good work rain jacket that isn't just a yellow, plastic tarp made to look like a poncho. Any, thin, waxed, hooded, jackets out there you know of? I say thin, cause even when it rains here, it's still 80 to 90 degrees most of the time. Thanks.

Seems like a comparison to the Flint and Tinder Rancher jacket would be more accurate than to their Trucker one. Heavier canvas and a boxier fit, I'd be interested to hear what you think of it. Seems like every review only talks about the Trucker but I've been happy with the Rancher for work.

The liner is not the same but is similar, flannel through the body and quite warm, the sleeves are a slicker material for ease of movement like this jacket. The shell is 10 oz just like this jacket and unlike the trucker which is why that one feels more like a shirt. Buttons are personal preference I would say and while it is not gussetted the boxier tailoring mean it isn’t too restrictive.

I love the waxed cotton. One real irritating detail you put the phone pocket on the wrong side. 90% of people are right handed. If my phone rings I’m gonna zip down the jacket, and pull the phone out with my right hand. Hence inside pocket should be on the left side. Don’t feel bad, my latest Carhartt jacket got it wrong too.

Too bad its limited to 100. Its answers problems I have to similar style jackets but I have a rule to let purchases over a certain price simmer for 6-12 months before buying. Otherwise Id have 20 more boots and 15 more jackets probably lying around. (And even this methods had me get high reputation items I wish I didnt get that had a superior but slightly lesser known option I didnt know of yet that was designed to answer my concerns or issues that I run into with a certain purchase)

Man, that’s a very respectable and reasonable method for reigning in our want to purchase as fast as possible! I might add this rule to my shopping. I have to admit, I try to limit myself as well but break the rules sometimes when it’s a limited release or whatnot. You have great self control

@@taifu13781 Yup I got it from my uncle. He also taught me to not bring my money when going into a dealership or furniture store. When you come to a decision it at least gives you the time to process it going to the bank or back home (and Ive noticed many people have a hard time saying no or emotionally feel pressured when dealing with sales people so it allows one to decompress and realize if they truly want something or not)

I love the channel and I’ve been here since the beginning. I know a lot of people who work for a living. I honestly can’t think of one who would pay $300-$500 for a piece of work clothing. Maybe there are some working stiffs who will spend that kind of money on workwear and I just don’t know them. In my opinion, all of the jackets in that price range are fashion items.

I agree most people won’t spend that money for work clothes. I think this level of clothing is for people who enjoy clothing as a hobby and also work a trade. I wear my $500 clothing roofing, the other guys on the job don’t have any high priced clothing at all, let alone expensive work wear. I like high quality clothing no matter what I’m doing, dressing up for dinner, nice comfortable sweats for lounging at home, and durable high quality workwear for the job.

Idk I get $500+ work boots from nicks and I’ll never go back, and I end up spending less

@@Gorlami90 Boots I get. I put them into an entirely different category. I once had a job that required me to stand on concrete all day. Red Wings with a good pair of insoles got the job done for me, but I can identify with someone who seeks more comfort and durability.

While I agree the prices are high most this high end workwear is stuff you’re going to have for at least 10 years and most likely even pass down
@jamesdillman6811
@jamesdillman6811 Жыл бұрын
@@MrNatronimo You won’t get any argument from me on that. I tend to spend more on quality clothing than the vast majority of people. I’m just saying that most people won’t invest that kind of money in workwear even if it makes financial sense over the long haul. That’s why you tend to find high-dollar workwear only online and not in retail stores.

Gotta make this in FR so us Oil and Gas people can work in it. We actually make enough money to afford it too.

@@CarlMurawski I have no idea tbh, but I need the rating on my work wear just to be onsite in the oilfields here in North Dakota. That's a good question. It's hard to find good work clothes anyway, so no surprised if you can't find anything quality. Most stuff is cheaply made these days.

@@CarlMurawski yep, even USA companies are garbage when it comes to FR gear. My new Bulwark Insulated coveralls ($200+) already got holes in the pockets, snaps have completely ripped off, etc and just shy of 2 months of use. FR is like the worst market to shop in.

A big part of the appeal of the original Detroit Jacket was the athletic appearance it gave the wearer. Even a portly fellow would have a V-shaped back when he put it on. Other jackets completely miss this aesthetic.

Thank you, your jacket and the others seem like great choices but let's be real they all cost too much. Even a $100.00 jacket is steep for an average working man. Considering the cost of a good pair of work boots these days I would rather put the money on boots. We all have to make priority choices on needed items balanced against money available. Thanks again.
