American McGee's Alice is a psychological horror game set in the world of Alice in Wonderland. It features some of the best representations of the Wonderland characters in any media, as well as visually stunning levels and a dark storyline.
Hope you enjoy it. Sorry for the long wait. Please like, comment, and share the video around if you enjoyed it. I read every comment and can use the publicity on such a small channel. Thanks!

I think the reason why the Cheshire cats death was so quick because it wants to symbolise that she doesn’t have time to grief, because she’s overwhelmed but she’s got to continue. Not sure if true but it’s just what I think

Actually, American has gone on record saying that the original Alice game was made by separate divisions. As such, any allusions to the books, including Carroll's likeness, as being canonical wasn't his idea. He wanted to establish a sort of "alternate story" to the original one, one that was darker and more twisted. Part of his wish to distinguish his games from the original books was due to the controversy and allegations surrounding Carroll and his relationship with Alice Liddell. By the by, the grasshopper power-up occurs another time in the game -- in the underground caverns before the ice section and before you fight the centipede boss. There might be other locations for the mirror as well, but I am unsure. And I believe the strongest weapon in the game is actually the Blunderbuss. There are only two locations in which it may be found if I remember correctly. Even though it uses all your mana, it is incredibly powerful.

And then the sequel came out and they decided to go in *hard* with the "oh yeah child molestation's just a common thing" Man. I was so disappointed in that game.

Makes me wonder how the game would've turned out if American went with his original idea. I've yet to find interviews or articles which discuss Alice's original concept. If the game involved an original character with mental illness who believed herself to be Lewis Carroll's Alice, that would've allowed American to diverge from and alter Carroll's original material in more radically creative ways. If it involved a modern psychiatric patient, that might've led to the game to resembling Alice meets Silent Hill, Max Payne, and Quake. American's original intention might explain why the game wasn't able to adapt other aspects of Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Considering how already dark the original books are, it would've been fun to be able to interact with and explore the world from the books in Alice's engine, as well as fight the original characters with Alice's toy arsenal. But wishing aside, I still love the retail Alice game as I played it. It's a shame American didn't bring back Daniel D. Wood, Alice's original co-writer, to write The Madness Returns, because Alice's original writing and structure felt tighter and better than the sequel's. I also prefer the original Alice's combat and Alice's inclusion of interestingly varied boss fights. If only Alice got to have an expansion pack just like its Quake-engine forebears, because a Quake-styled mission pack for Alice which added new weapons, enemies, and locations would've been awesome to play. Also, such an expansion would've explored other aspects to Wonderland and Looking Glass Land which the first Alice didn't cover.

@@bluebay1031 No, I don't act like that at all. I never said child prostitution wasn't a thing in that place and time. However it feels like an incredible tonal shift, and is imo handled very poorly. If you're going to handle sexual violation of any kind you better know what you're doing and do a *damn* good job with it and treat it with the tact that such a delicate subject requires, otherwise don't do it. The Madness Returns uses child prostitution as a mere dramatic twist, a reveal to shock the audience, and nothing more. It has nothing to actually _say_ about underage sex in England in the time period, it just has it be a thing to explain the trauma the children suffer. And that's without even getting into how the whole plot basically just undoes the entire first game. "Hey Alice, you know how you worked through your survivor's guilt and regained your sanity? Well, now you're back to being crazy and going to Wonderland, and everything's terrible again. Fix it!" It retroactively worsens the end to the first game, because now you know that she'll just be hypnotized into being a child prostitute. Joy.

There's at least 3 more mirrors in the game: one at the school in the library section when you are returning to go to the observatory, one in the forest section where you are surrounded by mushrooms, and another under the chess board pieces in the "hub world" as you called it. I actually found them pretty useful for bypassing enemies, which I also used the stopwatch for. The grasshopper also appears when you're in the anthill and during the centipede boss battle. It's pretty much useless because of how hard it is to control, but sometimes, like in that closed room full of card guards, I would launch myself over the whole thing and land in the elevator, going to the next level. Great video btw, I just felt like too much of it was taken up by game summary.

You know, I like to believe that Bumby didn't just throw the lamp to the fireplace (I'm not american, I don't know how you say "lareira" in english) like Alice believes he did, since that doesn't fit the intro of the first game. I like to believe that Bumby, after abusing Alice's sister, he saw the library and realized that the place was indeed a fire trap. So, he put the lamp close to the fireplace, he grabed Alice's sleepy cat (she neither woke up nor attacked him, because he acquired Lizzie's smell after raping her), put her on the book shelf that was most likely to, if the books fell, knock over the lamp release its inflamible liquid into the fireplace, and discreetly woke her up, quickly geting out of the house right after that.

Thanks for the walkthrough of this game! I couldn't hang with a full let's play no matter how hard I tried, so this was a nice cliffnotes version, and it was cool to hear all your thoughts on each level. AMR has been one of my personal favorite games for a long time; while it does have its problems, I think it does a lot of things right and improves on the original in a lot of ways, as well as having a great storyline on its own. However, I did always find it sad that it just kind of negated the great happy ending of this particular game, because I always found the ending cutscene where Alice leaves the asylum with a big smile on her face super sweet and inspiring. Alas, recovering from grief and mental illness isn't always such a cut and dry thing, and the villain of A:MR probably had a lot to do with Alice's relapse back into insanity at the start of that game. Still, I suppose one can always look at the sequel as a kind of alternate continuity if one so chooses, which would also go a long way to reconciling the two games. :) Do you have any thoughts on the new game that American McGee wants to make called Alice Asylum, which from the looks of it would be a prequel to the first game? The concept art that's been released for it looks super cool!

I love the way you describe the flaws and the good parts of the game and constantly remind us that it wasn’t made by experts. Also with the chess part, I just wanted to say that the queen coming back in an chess game is possible and quite common. It’s called promotion: any pawn can become any piece-except for a king-after they reach the limit of the enemy’s side (8a-h for the whites; 1a-h for blacks). Since the strongest piece is the queen, most players-when they have reached the limit-choose to turn their pawn into a queen. That’s why the queen had a round head, like a pawn, for a split second.

The follow up trouble was that I was not happy with wjat my best was, and expected me to do better then the low level of capability that 'my best' was. But still. It was an important step to realize. I’m not saying that it’s a good thing, no, but it’s realistic; it’s never one and done, especially with depression and PTSD, let alone all that on top of a hallucinogenic disorder of some kind. As her psyche is warped again, being manipulated, it makes sense that her mental health would suffer, requiring another Wonderland visit. I dunno.

I think the sequel was kinda necessary actually ? Do you remember what the Hatter said ? He said "Truth and you are not in good terms" and "Truth is only bitter for those who fear it". @Shenaldrac
@Shenaldrac 3 жыл бұрын
@@JabamiLain Uh.... no. You've completely missed the point of the first game. The fire _was_ an accident, but Alice blamed herself. She denied the truth that the fire wasn't her fault. The game is her working through her survivor's guilt which has driven her mad, finally accepting that much like Billy Joel, she didn't start the fire. All the bad things going on in Wonderland, all the corruption, is a metaphorical manifestation of the harm Alice's misbelief that she is responsible for the death of her parents is causing her. She is _literally_ fighting her own inner demons throughout the game.
@JabamiLain
@JabamiLain 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shenaldrac very well, that makes sense. I still like the sequel nonetheless, especially as it justifies the Queen's actions from the first game. Speaking of, I've always kinda rooted out for her. Besides representing Alice's guilt, she also represents her logic and reason (that I know to have been kinda twisted), which means she represents order and control. She wants to break Wonderland in order to force Alice to face reality and become ruthless enough to survive whatever the world throws at her. And you know why that's kinda good if done it properly ? Because Alice can't live in her dreamworld forever. Eventually, she's going to have to wake up and face the growth that the life imposes upon us all. And if her mind is well prepared, she'll have the tools she needs to have a say in the future.
@Shenaldrac
@Shenaldrac 3 жыл бұрын
@@JabamiLain Dude, what are you talking about? The red queen is explicitly the core manifestation of Alice's guilt. She isn't her logic or reason or rationality. The Red Queen is the part of Alice that tells herself that the fire is her fault. That's _why_ she spends the entire game trying to break Alice down. You've completely misunderstood everything. Alice doesn't live in her dreamland forever, there's nothing about that in the game. None of this is within the text or the implications of the game. The Red Queen serves an entirely antagonistic role, and is literally everything wrong with Alice's mental state. That's why her body stretches out throughout the game, those disgusting red tendrils all leading to her twisted form. So no, there is no "the second game justifies the queen's actions from the first game" because that's now what happened in the first game, and her mind clearly _wasn't_ prepared by the red queen since Alice easily fell under hypnosis and became another child prostitute like all the others, which again is just tonally such a disgustingly sharp turn from everything else. All I can really say is, go play the first game again because you're terrible misinterpreted _everything._

I got this game at a garage sale when I was a kid and played on my old dinosaur of a PC. It was monumental in my life and I fell in love with this genre of story telling and gaming

No amount of style could help me get over the awful jumping and lackluster combat, sadly. While I see how people can love it so much for everything other than its gameplay, I don't think I can be that forgiving. This video made me appreciate the game a bit more though.

@Svetoslav Nikolov Nah, I played the original when it was out on PC. But you know what? I don't insist. I was a little bitch back then, maybe I'd love the game today.

I hope they redo this game with better game controls. The way it looks is really good but a graphic update would be nice.

There is a button you can hold that makes a mark appear showing you where you will jump. If you jump whilst holding it you gain a sort of "jump assist".

I love the way you explain this entire thing you made all of it make sense and you basically said what's bad without saying the game is bad the platforming can't be a little janky sometimes but it's not bad I think it's fun and good for the game your thoughts on the boss fights make sense basically I like everything you said about it it all makes sense and I agree with you

I seen a complete nightmare playthrough of that game, ans i know there are several of those power ups everywhere. There were two places where the mirror worked, and the pepper spray appearing rarely when you need it the most. You also missed the imp dice that let you summon henchmen. They upgrade the more dice you find

Oh no; you're not the only one. I didn't like how Madness Returns completely undoes the storyline of this game. Nor did I like the voice actor chosen to play the Cheshire Cat. The voice actor for the first game was far better and totally added to the tone of the game. American McGee's Alice is one of my all-time favorite PC games; where the sequel was barely passable.

The Cheshire cat is voiced by Roger L. Jackson on both games, it's that his delivery sounds different in madness returns (probably due to age, either he couldn't do the exact voice anymore or just forgot how to do it).
