Basic police training starts at a residential college, then progresses to on the street training with a qualified officer. This basic training takes 2+ years. Once you have completed this training you can then be trained to drive pursuit which takes another year. You could, after these and several years service be "allowed" to train as a firearms officer. The training for this is very tough and long, varies. Other training routes such as detective have different training time scales. In all branchs British police are trained to descalate any confrontation. There is NO considetation being given to arming regular police as there is no need.

Congratulations and good luck! I believe when this video was created, only A levels (or an equivalent qualification) were required for British police forces. Beginning with the latest police recruit intakes onward, a university qualification is now required and you can join the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (much like yourself) if you do not already have one.

That video is very inaccurate regards the UK Police. Far too many of the Infographics Channel's videos are very poorly researched, vague and inaccurate. British Police training is 3 years. This doesn't include firearms training, as with the exception of Northern Ireland, UK Police don't carry firearms as standard. During those 3 years, the student officers do not have full police powers. They're very limited in what they can do. They're not allowed to do any emergency high-speed police driving, take part in policing riots, carry a taser or attend emergency incidents unsupervised. The 3-year training consists of numerous cycles of classroom work, fieldwork and practical attachments in every area of community policing. Along with observational attachments in most of the specialised units. Such as Road Policing (Traffic) Units, Firearms Units, Aerial Units, Dog Units, Mounted Units, etc. Throughout the 3 year training period, the student officers undergo frequent written, oral and practical exams and assessments. Along with reports and appraisals of their performance. If at any point during the 3 years, a student officer fails to meet the required standards. Their career as a Police Officer is terminated. The training very much emphasises effective communication and de-escalation techniques. With heavy physical or deadly force only used as an emergency or last resort. This represents a major difference between American Police Forces and European Police Forces. Some good examples of this can be found in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lcCAdbKEndyuiGg.html and this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZx1h85lzr2ud40.html After the 3-year probationary period is completed the now fully qualified officer has solid knowledge in all areas of community policing and foundational knowledge of how the specialist units operate, sufficient to effectively support and work alongside them. Only now do they undergo training in riot control, using the taser and driving police vehicles at emergency high speed. They now also have the choice of staying in community policing or applying to join one of the specialised units. If their application to join a specialist unit is accepted. They then undergo the additional training programs, assessments and exams required of the particular specialist unit. If they fail to make the grade they're returned to community policing. Using the Specialist Firearms Unit as an example. The Specialist Firearms Unit has one of the most rigorous and extensive training programs of all the specialist units. Officers spend many weeks learning how to use various firearms, special assault tactics and advanced high-speed offensive and tactical driving. Once qualified they have to undergo frequent re-assessment to maintain their specialist firearms and driving qualifications. You can get a very brief idea of the training here. www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-39260906/police-firearms-training-hardest-thing-i-ve-ever-done They're taught to only use their firearm as a last resort when there's an imminent threat to life. There's significant ramifications if a British firearms Police Officer discharges his firearm for any reason. All UK Police shootings are immediately investigated. The officer's weapon is immediately confiscated for examination. And the officer is removed from firearms duties until the investigation is completed. As part of the investigation, the officer must also personally justify their actions in court.

Where did you hear that? It’s wrong. You need basic GSCE (high school) education and, depending on which force you apply for, be a certain age. At times some forces will have a drive in recruiting graduates for fast track promotion. A lot of forces have stopped doing that though because over the years they have realised that promoting someone with a degree can often be worse than promoting someone with experience. Obviously it will always look good on an application if you have a degree but most of the time forces are looking for ‘life experience’ with new applicants. In certain areas it helps if you are from a minority background too as they try to be more representative of the population they cover.

My daughter has just joined U.K. police. There are 2 ways in. Apprenticeship. You start at 18 with A levels and over 3 years you learn on the job and in college. At the end you get a university degree and your police qualification that is valid anywhere in the U.K. if you already have a degree in a relevant subject eg criminology you can be fully qualified in 2 years. If your degree is in an unrelated subject it may take you longer. These are new rules but even in the past you weren’t fully qualified when you started working after 3 or 6 months. If you wanted to carry a gun you would need to have been qualified a number of years and then be trained in firearms. Even then most people are rejected. On.y those officers with a very calm disposition are allowed to carry firearms.

Also, the video made it sound as if the British police don't train. Their training actually lasts for a lot longer than in the US and is followed by up to 2 years probationary, on the job, training. If you want to carry a taser, that's an additional 4 months training. If you want to be an authorised firearms officer, you have to get approval from your superiors and pass a whole series of interviews, assessments and physical and psychological tests before you can be approved to even begin training. Firearms training itself lasts 18 weeks and regular refresher training and tests are undertaken once qualified. There is a further level above this, which requires you to have served as an authorised firearms officer for quite some time. If accepted you then undertake a further 18 weeks training as a specialist firearms officer and several weeks further in counter-terrorism techniques. Once again you'll face regular refresher training and testing, in order to stay in the role. Any specialist training of any type will also require further training. Usually lasting several months.

Within England and Wales - Many police forces required people to be 18, have at least a level 3 qualification which is what we call college (studied after high school between the ages of 16 to 18/19). Now things are slowly changing as they will require people to have degrees OR they can join through an apprenticeship where they are on probation for 3 years. Training right now consists of around 14 to 20 weeks before you become a police officer, after which 10 weeks of on the job tutoring occurs and during your 2 years of probation you learn on the job and see and try out other departments. After 2 years you are a full police officer not a student officer. After the new scheme where you require a degree or join through an apprenticeship, you do 3 years of on the job training while doing the job, doing a degree while on the job and you do about 26 weeks of training prior to starting the job. Regular officers don't carry firearms except PAVA spray, baton and cuffs. If the danger is seen to be too high tazer trained officers (who are regular officers who opted to get trained to use a tazer) can be called to assist or firearms officers (all firearms officers also carry tazer's)

Recently the entry to UK police forces has changed radically you need a degree now to join the police in the UK(2 years on the job and at university training to complete a diploma which is considered a masters level qualification) or complete a degree as part of training(3 years on the job and at university training to complete your degree) . What they don't mention is its very competitive, with 1000s applying for just 30 positions. You have to show previous experience with a very long essay like application, and go to an assessment day where you complete maths, English and role play exams. Then if you pass that you go to an interview with senior police officers and staff. You also have to pass Vetting where your family and social media are checked. It often takes years to get in, with people working in other emergancy service roles to gain experience. The UK training is all around Persuade Advice Warn and alternatives to arrest. It's very hard to get arrested in the UK and its usually because you've committed a serious crime, continued to commit a crime in front of officers or refusing to leave the area where you are committing the offence. eg Drunk and Disorderley. The assault on officers in the UK is getting worse as the courts wouldn't prosecute for it for a long time, they recently brought a law to protect emergency service workers but they very rarely give jail time. There are calls to increase sentancing powers for this offence. As there has been an increase in the Ambulance, NHS and fire service also being attacked whilst on duty.

The application for a firearm is incredibly strict though. Any minor infraction and you'll be immediately denied the license. Most firearms are granted to farmers as a means of pest control for crops etc. Others are for shooting clubs. I believe (although don't know for sure) the firearm must be kept in a locked safe on the site of the gun range along with its ammution. Basically you can't take it home with you. Self defence is also not a valid reason for owning a firearm.

That might be "the tests" the info graphic is referring to. As far as I'm aware you do not need standard GCSEs (equivalent to high diploma) to apply in the UK or atheist they retake them as part of training, which i think is the difference the infographic is referring to.

Police officers here in the UK don't carry guns (apart from in Northern Ireland), but they do carry tasers. The reason why officers from the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) carry guns is because of the unrest that still goes on there even all these years after the peace process. Also, police forces over here aren't as localised as they are in the US. For example, our police force (South Wales) covers everywhere from my home city (Swansea) over to Cardiff, which is a range of about 40-odd miles, and the Valleys to the north. And Scotland used to have many police forces until they all merged about six years ago and is now known as "Police Scotland". And as I mentioned above, Northern Ireland has the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland). And because of this, police forces find themselves having to deal with a wider range of things than they would in a US equivalent. For example, Police Scotland could find themselves dealing with a fight in Glasgow City Centre one minute and a more minor incident in a remote village the Scottish Highlands the next. And the same force has to deal with both things, which are on two completely different ends of the spectrum in terms of location. There's also the British Transport Police, who are based at every major railway station and possibly airport in this country.

That info video was very poorly done. It mixed around the stats so much instead of showing them next to each other such as the assaults on police. In UK between 23k and 2m and in the US 53k. Both stats over a minute apart with other stats mixed in between. Considering the US has almost 9 times as many police and barely 2 times as many assaults, I guess having an armed police force seems a good thing for safety. Almost seems like that is a stat they don't want people noticing together.

In the UK you do train for 2 years and you are not allowed to stay in the same role more than 8 years, so Murder squad is 5 years then you have to apply. This does not cure all ills but it does mean that as you work your career you will have a much broader world view

This was ridiculously biased in the last part. English police training actually prepares them better for the streets and trains them to take serving role instead of a warrior role. Also live is a lot cheaper in Britain and the NHS especially reduces the need for a high pension

This is not completely true. You need a certain level of high school qualifications to join police forces in the uk and you then train for 5 months before you go on duty. You then have a 2 year further probation and training period before you may become a substantive Police Constable

Making comparisons doesn't make sense, there is a discriminator that makes it impossible; weapons. In America, any cop MUST assume that anyone could be armed, in UK it assumes (almost surely) who is not armed unless he's a criminal; this deep difference makes the cops approach completely different. I don't want to justify anyone (unfortunately many american cops seems out of control) but blaming them for everything would be unfair, your society works in this way, and it seems to me who most americans are okay with this. I'm not judging anything; your country, your laws (sorry for my "google-eng", I hope you understand what I mean).

What the video doesn't tell you is that the decline in police numbers in the UK is entirely due to the election of the Conservative party in 2010. They have presided over enormous increases in violent crime after consistent declines throughout the late 90s and 00's. Yet somehow the British public keep electing the Tories. They've pretty much done nothing but mess up the country since being in power and they're not down yet. The reason for electing then is due to the opposition being seen as more Socialist than usual. Unfortunately the British press are mostly Conservative and deem socialism to be evil and they consistently attack the Labour Party with false stories. There is a widening inequality in the UK and it is getting rogressuvely worse under the Tories. Our country is really at breaking point being oen of the most unequal countries in Europe. The alternative is the election of more left wing policies designed to make the country more equal. Sadly, the British press is dominated by tabloid newspapers who really seem to dictate opinion in England. They preach nothing but pure hatred towards immigrants, foreigners and blame everything that is wrong on the poorest. Unfortunately the British parliament is dominated by constituencies in middle England who increasingly buy into everything these newspapers tell them. We also have an increasing working class who now elect to vote Tory as they believe Boris Johnson to be a truth teller and a man of the people. Of course this is nonsense and exactly the opposite of the real truth but that doesn't stop the Conservatives from win uh votes even in the poorest areas they have blighted for generations. Its a real mess and sadly our future is bleak under the Tories we have at present. Not only do they lie and cheat but they also are totally incompetent and blubde from one crisis to the next. I hope my country wakes up soon.

Average usa training acros the nation is 19 weeks. No or hardly any de-escalating training. Every state and even towns Can add stuff to the training. Basic its holds 3 parts.... 1) LAW......well its handy to know the LAW. 2) driving tests. 3) shooting test. Other western countries got police training from 2 to 3 years. Its holds the 3 american parts. And way, way , way more. The minimum educational level is way higher in Europe...its on or nearly at university level. There are major parts of the training done for de-escalating. The list What european cops are trained in is so long...its to long to post. Please look iT up. What americans who go live in Europe noticed straight on is How different the police here is. More easy going. More human. No military way of speaking. And most of All...They speak to you like you are human. A good example on whats different between usa cops and european cops comes from Zwitserland. Zwitserland got more guns out there in % then in the usa. Al of iT adult men hold guns. The gun laws in Zwitserland makes the NRA drewl. Here is the difference.... In the usa the first think a cop tells a driver to do when he aproaches the care... “ put your hands on the wheel so I Can see them” In Zwitserland......and the rest of Europe. “Please, turn the car of”. On average a cop in Europe uses his gun 3 times in a 35 year carreer. 1 out of those 3 times a gun was fired. Usa On average the usa police uses his gun on a weekly bases over the Same time period. He Fries his gun at least 76 times in his carreer. Of the times police in usa uses the gun its 80% of the times vs normal civilians. In Europe...2% Good luck usa with your awsome system

We Policed by consent in the UK and the UK is policed by the public.. not a military entity. I was from a forces family myself.. so no axe to grind, I must point out.
