The American Press combines a pressurized brewing technique (similar to the Aeropress) and the classic shape of a regular French press. How do they compare? Gail puts them to the test. We used the cofffee-to-water ratios and grind settings recommended by each of the manufacturers:
Aeropress: Medium-fine grind
American Press: Medium grind
French Press: Coarse grind

Different brewing methods require different ratios because the extraction chemistry is different with each method. For example, I brew with a chemex pour over. When I do pour over, I will do a medium-coarse grind at a 16:1 water - coffee ratio. However if I were to brew French press, I would likely do 14:1 on a very coarse grind. This is because the coarseness of the grind will lessen how powerful and fast the extraction time is as opposed to the more rapid extraction of the pour over. I hope that makes sense to you.

If you actually analyze the ratios she used, they're all within 1 ml water/g coffee this is not a huge variation given how different the methods are (French: 15.926; American: 16.131; Aero: 16.899). That being said, I think it's okay to have different proportions as they are different styles of coffee going for different flavors. Where I do take issue with this video is the use of grams to measure water for the French press and ounces for the American and Aero-presses (we have to assume that they're fluid ounces but who's to say? the first measurement of liquid was done in grams). This is absolutely insane and pisses me off way more than it should.

It doesn't really matter; 1000 millilitres of water weigh the same as 1000 millgrams of anything ... but I'm with you on the apparently random mixing of systems of measures.
@meatcreap
@meatcreap 6 жыл бұрын
John HUNTER that’s very true but once you switch to ounces it could go either way (fluid or weight). There is no mention of this in the video. 1 fluid ounce of water weighs about one ounce regardless. That’s still not the point. The point is that they didn’t pay a lick of attention to a pretty crucial aspect of the experiment.

Best part about coffee is the journey to what you like most. Everyone has their preferences and that's why there's so many different ways of making coffee. I don't see how anyone can possibly declare what way is the best. I have used $4000 machines and I've also boiled unground beans in a can over a fire. Each experience has it's own merit, so try something new and if it's not for you it doesn't mean that it's wrong instead you have just learned something from it. This will enrich your coffee journey and remind yourself that your preferences are different from others.

Love it! I just recently purchased the American Press and have been using it for 2 weeks now. I just like how versatile the American Press can be. You can totally change the character of the cup by simply varying the Press time. Some days I like a really heavy bodied cup, other days I like a lighter body so the high notes can shine through. So my go to recipe is 22 grams of coffee and water filled to max line. I do a pre-infusion for a minute and then press for 2 minutes. For a heavier body, I would pre-infuse for 2 minutes, press for 2 minutes. Then after pressing, I would pull the plunger half way back up and press back down again. This gives me a really heavy and syrupy bodied coffee. For a lighter bodied coffee I would pre-infuse for 30 seconds. Then press for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Or I would even skip the pre-infusion and just press for 2 minutes.

The AeroPress is actually made in America. (It's actually the ONLY coffee *machine made in the U.S.A. btw) The American Press is made in China. I have all three. You need to use the inverted method with the AeroPress. What you did there was amateur first time user method with paper filter. And what was your water temperature? Grind size for each? There is no need to take a minute to plunge the handle on any of them. What the American Press is suggesting, that you "Pre-Infuse" the coffee grounds for a set amount of time to your strength liking. You could easily be doing another task while letting the coffee steep or even setting a timer. Also, you can use the exact same amounts of water and coffee in each to get an accurate flavor profile. Provided you use 186° - 190° water for all three.

I bought a French Press after Lonnie on Far North Bushcraft recommended it. My kids bought me a Keurig for Christmas a couple of years ago. My wife and I always kept a pot of hot water on our regular drip coffeemaker, so I wasn't pleased with the Keurig because it takes so long to get a cup of coffee. And the K-Cups are expensive, so I bought a reusable "K-Cup." That way it wasn't so expensive. So, upon Lonnie's recommendation I bought a French Press and I found I enjoyed my cup of coffee more. The coffee took on such a rich flavor, and the longer you let it steep, the better the flavor. So now I have to decide whether I want a "quick" slow cup, or a wonderfully rich cup. Probably what I should do is make a "quick" cup and, before drinking that first cup, start a cup steeping in the French Press. My French Press is double walled stainless steel, so it will keep the coffee hot while I drink that first cup. Ah! The best of both worlds! And FYI, I don't mind the "dregs." It's like a little shot of expresso at the end of the cup. Best of three worlds?

Steep time is different and the filter is different. You can use finer grinds on the American press and even finer with the Aeropress with paper filter than you can with the French press. For example I have both the Hario Double wall french press and the Walküre Karlsbader porcelain coffee maker. I use a little bit coarser for the french press and ratio of 70g/l and 4 min steep time. For the Karlsbader I use about the same grind size as for Chemex maybe a little bit coarser and 64g/l. It's an pour over but with porcelain kriss cross filter. For the Karlsbader the brewtime is about 3:30 min. I get brighter,bolder and cleaner cup with the Karlsbader than the french press simple because coffee particles dissolves differently in a pour over brewing vs immersion brewing and for how long it's going to steep.

The idea and much of the execution in this video is very well done, but I have a few thoughts 1) as several have suggested, I would have liked to see the amount of active time spent in making a cup from the American Press and Aeropress. Part of why the French Press is so ubiquitous is its ease of use. 2) I liked the description of flavors from the Aeropress (fruity, etc) while the other two were described as "bold," "strong," or "medium" which are not helpful to a viewer. Were the flavors of the roast prominent? How much acidity was present? What was the body and mouthfeel like? "Fruity" gives me much more of an idea than "bold" does.

Hey Gail, You dont put the grounds into that internal filter on the Espro press. You brew it like a regular french press, and then when you plunge it down, the brew is forced through the filter basket thing, seperating the grounds completely from the coffee.. hence why its such a clean brew.

4 seconds aeropress? Let me school you: 1. Grind slightly larger than drip. 2. Plunger end down and inserted to about the bottom number, add coffee from filter end. 3. Add 200 degree F water to about half. Wait 1 minute to bloom grounds then stir 10 seconds. 4. Add remaining 200 degree water. Install wet filter with plastic end piece. Steep 4 minutes. 5. Carefully turn over and place on coffee mug and gently press for about 20 seconds. Should make a half standard 14 ounce coffee mug of European coffee. Add water to just below brim for Americano style coffee. Perfect cup every time.

nunya just a tip: blooming is really pointless in an immersion brewer like the aeropress. Just adding all your water and stirring to make sure all the grinds are wet is a much more efficient way to get extraction going. The bloom is more for pourover. Doesn't hurt anything with the aeropress, just adds an extra step for no benefit. Happy brewing!

@@davidsikes I think it's the minute cool down in a low volume of water that removes some of the bitterness while extracting the most flavor and oils. I used to drink drip coffee. Maxwell House. Ugh. Then Maxwell House did the unthinkable and switched to Robusto beans. Yuck. So in my search for the best daily cup of joe, I did a tremendous amount of research. I did a tremendous amount of experimenting with expensive coffee makers, never to completely trust a reviewer due to the subjective nature of taste. The one unit that makes a coffee that can withstand a pro/boutique coffee shop without spending a ton of money is the aeropress. I splurged on a cuisinart electric kettle in which no tap water will ever see the inside. Ever. Except to wash it. I use a store brand gallon jug of drinking water, which is basically distilled water. Cost is about .87 cents per gallon. More than tap? Yes. Is my coffee more expensive per pound? Yes. Does it cost more than Starbucks? I could use over a half pound of coffee for the cost of one cup at Starbucks. And I made a fantastic cup of coffee myself. The aeropress instructions may work for old crusty Maxwell House, but with fresh quality grind, 1 minute of bloom makes a huge difference in taste and aroma. If you're going to make the investment for a decent daily cup, it's worth taking the steps to make it how you like it. It's done exactly the same every day and that becomes routine. You also have a solid base from which to experiment. Which is how I found the bloom works extremely well at 200°F for 1 minute using fresh grind.

Hi Gail :) I'd like to ask about this grinder. How can you compare it to the Sette (with the AP or brew burr) or cheaper conical grinders (like e.g. Encore or Virtuoso). What's the consistency and how many fines does it produce on its coarsest end (for FP or cold brew). Thanks :)

I have a French Press, 12oz like the middle one & just made a MUG of coffee after seeping for 4 minutes, I used McCafe Premium Roast coffee, (it's what I had on hand) so wanted to try it asap, the coffee flavor was "just right", smooth & delicious....I used 1 coffee scoop to 12 oz of boiled water, then slowly pressed, no grounds in my coffee at all. Its a keeper! I can't wait to try my flavored hazelnut coffee in this press, esp. enjoy an evening cup of coffee while watching TV.

I enjoy the qualities and substance of most all of your videos. Frankly, I find them relaxing to watch. One critique I would offer is that when doing head to head comparisons like this it seems to me that perhaps the most important criteria would be that ratios of water to coffee are identical. As a side note, I would also say that using a consistent measure method such as oz. and tablespoons rather than grams and ounces would make the understanding of what amounts used a bit easier. Thank you for the time and effort put in to produce videos of quality.

"Now that's coffee!" I very much appreciate your program, energy, and sense of humor. I think the ratio of ground coffee to water was the largest variable in your quasi-scientific comparison and results differential. The steeping and extraction times is the other variable. Equate those to be fair and then you may properly determine if the apparatus or coffee preparation method had any affect. But I think we all know the AeroPress rules. Coffee can be easy, cheap and delicious.

The greatest difference will be the presence of paper filter. Paper filter captures a lot more oils and cholesterol inducing chemicals like cafestol and kahweol. Steel filters don't, and that's true for everything from espresso, french press, to steel filtered Aeropress. Coffee oils will affect the taste but that's to your liking. I personally prefer the fruity notes of coffee so I go for Aeropress and pour overs. Not that big of a fan on metal filter coffee.

To me the Aeropress is like a T-Fal frying pan it's just very good. You can look at others but in the end, it takes some beating. Personally, I use an authentic Italian 3 cup Moka pot and make Americano with Lavazza or Piacetto beans most of the time but for convenience and a decent taste, Aeropress.

you shouldn't have used dark roast for immersion brewing, specially with metal filters, the American press (and French press if done right) are meant to be a little sweeter with the fuller mouthfeel and in the dark roast most of coffee sugars are burnt and it tends to taste less sweet, also cause they are immersion it's easier to overextract :/ so it would be better if you used a lighter roast

May I suggest, with the American press to press the coffee into the water to fully soak the grounds. Let it absorb the water for 30 seconds, then press slowly. I do the same thing when I use a drip coffee maker. Leave the carafe out so the water soaks in the grounds for 30 sec. Then place the carafe in so the coffee can drain into it. Makes a big difference.

I'm self-admitedly kind of a nerd. When you used metric and imperial together, I had to convert, just to see what ratios you were using. Putting it here in case anyone else wants to know. french press: 54 g coffee to 860 g water ratio is 16:1 american press: 22 g coffee to 12 fl oz water (355 ml) ratio is 30:1 aeropress: 14 g coffee to 8 fl oz water (237 ml) ratio is also 30:1 I'm a little surprised that you aren't measuring water by cc or ml, as you can use a scale for that (1cc = 1ml - 1g water by definition) and ratios just jump out. I know what grind(s) for the aeropress and french press, but which one for the american press? Is it super tolerant of grind variation like the aeropress? Thanks for posting this! I had no idea american presses existed...
@Cerus98
@Cerus98 4 жыл бұрын
Bob Koure - Your math is way off. She didn’t specify if she was using fl oz but it’s pretty close anyway. American press: 12fl oz would be 354g so the ratio with 22g of coffee would be 1:16. If it’s 12oz by weight that would be 340g of water with a ratio of 1:15. Aeropress: 8fl oz would be 236g so the ratio with 14g or coffee would be 1:17. If it’s 8oz by weight that would be 227g of water with a ratio of 1:16. I don’t know how you came up with 1:30 but that would be some weak ass looking and tasting coffee. Also your ratios are written out backwards. The real issue is the grind she uses on the French press. She used medium and medium fine on the other two and very coarse on the French. I never use that coarse of a grind with my French press. She also didn’t show how she used the French. If she didn’t break up the crust or even removed it before pressing that’s going to make a weaker brew along with the coarse grind. She also didn’t cleanse her pallet in between and likely had varying temps on each cup. One thing I did note was her “cleaner” comment on the American press vs French as if that’s a benefit. That’s probably due to the finer mesh and rubber seal on the American. French press coffee is supposed to be “dirtier” because it allows for more total dissolved solids and natural oils to remain giving it a thicker consistency.
