Dude, I love the line, "I've got to return some video tapes" because young people will be dumbfounded. They don't realize how late fees crippled all of us. I remember I rented like 4 movies for a movie night with my girlfriend in high school, and I didn't return them for like a week, and I had to sell a kidney to pay the late fees!

Found you by accident. Glad I did. American Psycho allows you to decide if he did it or he didn't do it. What you decide is the right answer. It's what the director wants in this movie. I think he did some of the murders, but not all. And the ambiguous ending was perfect. Bale's admission on the phone was worthy of an Oscar nomination alone. Fun reaction.

He did indeed kill all of them. The yuppies mix eachother up all the time due their similar looks and lifestyle. The lawyer either covered for Bateman or genuinely thought he ate with Paul

You should see The Machinist, the role for which Bale lost a lot of weight, great thriller or Equilibrium, a world where you are not allowed to feel any kind of emotion.

Does Patrick Bateman actually commit the murders in the movie "American Psycho?" Both Bret Easton Ellis and Mary Harron say that Patrick Bateman committed the murders, and I agree with them. It is important to understand why Patrick Bateman commits the murders. One of the major themes of American Psycho is the lack of identity among rich businessmen. They constantly mistake each other for different people. This is no surprise since everyone looks the same, goes to the same barber and the massage therapist, has the same glasses, suits, haircuts and even business cards. They eat at the same restaurants. They even have sex with the same women. And they all lack any sort of personality that might make them distinguishable. There is little difference between any of the characters in the film and a mannequin in a store. Both are easy on the eye, but dead inside. Patrick Bateman also fits this description. He is no different than any of his colleagues, but he doesn’t realize it. He doesn't realize the irony of the whole business card exchange or claiming that his haircut is better than Marcus Halberstram. At the same time, he wants to be different than others. Not only that, but he also wants everyone to notice that he is different. That’s why he confesses to his crimes every chance he gets. He wants to see a reaction from others confirming that they think he is different, but he doesn’t get any. Because they don’t care, and he is not different. Because people mistake each other for others all the time, it is possible, and very likely that Patrick is mistaken about whom he killed. This is very telling because the identities of the victims do not have an impact on the story at all. One of the important characters in the film is Paul Allen, yet the story wouldn’t change if Patrick killed someone other than Paul. Why should it? They are all the same. There are plenty of Paul’s in the office. This lack of identity among the elites has disturbing implications. We only follow one of these guys, and we see what a sick person he is. In what ways are his colleagues sick psychopaths? Do they all go around killing people? Do some of them prefer raping others instead? Do they just pick a crime to commit, the way children pick toys to play with? The apartment scene near the end of the movie also hints at very dark scenarios. To me, the face of the landlord suggests that she indeed saw all the bodies and got rid of them herself. This was a high-quality, luxurious apartment. Imagine how much the value of the house and the houses nearby would go down if people knew what it once contained inside. Maybe this isn’t even the first time the landlord had to do something like this. What other crimes are ignored because of greed? The final scene of the movie summarizes these ideas. Patrick wants to be recognized for being different, and he fails. The frustrating thing is that he has no idea why. This bothers him and will continue to bother him. He will keep trying to set himself apart from others, not realizing what a joke his attempts are. That is his punishment. “My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape, but even after admitting this, there is no catharsis. My punishment continues to elude me and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself.”

WOW! Ok, did you write a college paper on this film or have a class that critiqued the story? This is a SPECTACULAR break down and we are enlightened by your comment. So much to ponder and this FILM still has us on our toes about the 1% and wall street in general. Whoosh! this is a doozy to digest. You make some VALID points. Don't mess with the elite property values...Thank you.

American Psycho you can look at it two ways. First everyone aka all these yuppie types are so self centered nobody cared to actually know each others names so everyone was confused as to who was who and Patrick killings did happen. Or two Patrick/Davis was a literal on medication psychopath who etched all his killings in that book of his but none of them actually happened. I mean he said it himself in the opening of the movie ''There's a idea of a Patrick Bateman'' and ''I simply do not exist''. Also the feed me a stray cat , the cop car blowing up , the perfect shooting aim , the running down a apartment hall with a loud ass chainsaw , 4 dead bodies in Paul Allen apartment. These are all pretty obvious things and events that did not happen. Also you noticed the medication but what a lot of people don't notice is when he was at the telephone booth he took a bunch of his pills and the next scene is when his lawyer was telling him his name was Davis , so maybe finally taking those pills snapped him back into reality.

Yay, neat new film reactosphere fwends. Movies tailored for your particular tastes? Based on what I see on your channel, the first thing that comes to mind is Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic (1998). Been increasingly popular lately. Dovetailing with Anne Rice's theme of "lost souls", the deep cut I'll go with is All About Lily Chou-Chou. I actually saw it before I found out that Tarantino worships that movie.

@@frolickingchronicles Yeah, the author of the books, Bret Easton Ellis, often included ovelapping and related characters in his novels. There's a little known but excellent movie called 'The Rules of Attraction' with an awesome cast. James VanDerBeek plays 'Sean Bateman', one of the leads who is the little brother of Patrick Bateman. And just as sociopathic. It also stars Eric Stolz, Jessica Biel, Ian Somerhalder, Shannyn Sossamon, Faye Dunaway and even Fred Savage. Plus a bunch of other familiar faces. I highly recommend it. If not as a Reaction Movie, then at least just to watch. It's great. It's also directed by Roger Avary. He co-wrote the film 'Pulp Fiction'.
