Secret Army, BBC Sunday night prime time in the early '70's. One of the best war dramas ever made. The Belgian resistance hiding shot down airmen and intrepidly sending then down the evasion line to get them back to Britain while evading those Germans after them. It really gives a feel for what the occupation of Europe was like and written and authenticated by those who served and went down the line. I think all episodes are on YT

There was a serious 1977 TV series called Secret Army. Where a Belgium resistance network was smuggling allied pilots back to the UK. Run by a Belgium restaurant owner. Who appeared to be a collaborator, but was secretly financed by the British. In 1982 they took the basic situation, moved it to France and made it into a brilliant comedy. Which ended up running for 9 seasons and 85 episodes. The show was also very popular abroad, and sold to 85 countries.

Catch phrases gone into our cultural language. "Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once " the running gags. Cheese in the ears when the( classically trained) singer mangled off key songs. Herr Flicks walk. The licentious wet lettuce and flying helmet. "Good moaning" British spy pretending to be a French Policeman mispronouncing words. The sausage hiding the painting. Olgas underwear. British shot down airmen, under the old ladies bed, in her wardrobe, which was the aerial for the illicit radio.the constant failure to repatriate them. It was absolutely brilliant characterisation through 10+ years of episodes. Puns, double entendres, slapstick, pathos, and mickey taking of national stereotypes. "Wadda mistakea to makea" from the lecherous Italian soldier. Indescribably British p!sstaking humour in the old style.

I agree with the coments below you have to watdh a full episode to really get it. It is based in France everyone speakss English but twith their respective accents. But when two British airmen turn up no one can understand a word they are say because the dont speak English. If you can find the first episode it will explain a lot. later in the series one fo the greatest comedy characters was born. 'Allo 'Allo was a true classic and a very popular British sitcom. Loved by many in the Netherlands too, by all accounts. This was a wonderful show to watch. It had us laughing here in the UK. You could try the first episode and see if you like it. You don't have to get every joke. None of us do. The nice thing about this show is they repeat some of the gags in every show and it becomes a catch phrase - that becomes more and more funny as the episodes build - 'like listen very carefully, I shall say this only once'. Not funny the first time, but I bet you laugh in later episodes!!! Go on - give it a try!

Watch anything you like to see how it works for you personally, Connor. Remember it's your channel to choose what to do on it . . . Viewers only need to watch what they want to watch and ignore what they don't fancy . . . Yes, we did indeed have a lot of great comedy and drama shows between the 1970's - 1990's . . . (far too many to mention really!!! . . . All you have to remember, is that when they were first planned, and the idea was shown to the TV bosses of the time - no TV bosses wanted to spend much at all on any first series in case it, or they, flopped badly. It had to do well in the TV ratings first - and only then would they allocate more money to make their production value higher . . . You can easily tell from any 1st series getting through with the public, and then various things improved . . . The original 1st series of Blackadder was so tightly funded that they actually struggled to even make it . . . and as bad as the BBC's funding caused it to be made, it did so well with the watching public - (even being placed on BBC2 first) - that the next series got the go-ahead with a little more funding, etc, etc, as it progressed & so even a few "Specials" were also made from it . . .

The English guys in this are hysterical. The French are English actors talking English in a French accent but the English guys speak English, trying to sound French but say everything wrong. Hysterically funny. Sounds weird and on paper it shouldn't work but was comedy gold. My favourite line which was said many times was (in French accent) Leesen veree cerfooly. I shall say sis only wance. 😂😂😂 While staying in France with my French friends in the late 80's, early 90's I noticed in the tv magazine listings that had Allo Allo listed as airing on a French Cable Channel. My parents and myself couldn't understand how they would make that work, even if it was dubbed. My father was a French teacher so he loved the madness of the show and both my parents were toddlers during world war 2.

But then I realised that the French and German characters never change their accents when they’re speaking to each other. McJibbin won't get a lot of this because as a Yank he was NOT brought up, as we were, on reruns of British B Movies about WW2 . The characters in 'Allo, Allo' are caricatures of the various types, Idiot Germans, Nasty Nazis, Gruesome Gestapo, Posh RAF pilots evading capture, cunning French Resistance, Gorgeous French Waitresses, Pompous Italian officers, Stupid British Spies etc etc etc. The running joke? There were fifteen and you counted them off in every single episode for ten years. It was never understood or got anywhere in the States. But was hugely popular across Europe, including Germany. When I asked a German friend why this was so he said "The World knows we are B@st@rds, but this redeems us as being just Stupid B@st@rds. " The small German Officer, number 2, is played by a Jew! His standard line was instead of 'Heil H !' he just said 'Clop' as if clicking his heels.

Yes whole episodes to get the sometimes interwoven plot of intrigue & just the silliest farce. Loads of catchphrases. For instance Hans there with the clock down his pants never says "Heil H1tler" but always a delayed, "tler" which sometimes sounds like "clop". The show was even popular among Germans. It is basically about a café owner who gets roped into helping the French Resistance (when he'd rather just be fooling around with the waitresses) and the town occupying Germans who want to avoid any military action and make a bit of money on the side for their retirement.

A lot of the best comedies need to be watched in full episodes, as you don't always get the best out of short clips. Maybe watch one or two and do a reaction edit.
