Apparently Australia owes America so much for saving us from the Japanese. The fact is they were going to let us burn, until the Pearl Harbor thing, and only then did they enter the Pacific war. It was about revenge, not about saving anyone. Australia being saved was just a biproduct, and that we were fighting a common enemy.

I'm From the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and when I worked in a store an American lady said I wanna pay in Dollar. I said you can't pay in Dollar. We are in Europe and the currency here is Euro. She got mad and told me I was incredibly rude so I said to her: I'm not rude, I'm just telling you how it is. She went on a rant and said I would never make it in America. I was like: I really don't have any desire to make it in America. She could not believe what I was saying.

I went on holiday to Miami and met a girl whilst I was there, carried on talking online after the vacay, and she told me her friends had warned her that "I might just be looking for a green card" and that's when I told her to google search the place I live, Malta. Tell me love, why would I want to leave this friendly, beautiful, relaxed Mediterranean paradise to live in a country that doesn't even have a social health care system and a ridiculously high crime rate? I'm so lucky to live in Europe, I never realised it, but the older I get the more I learn.

I think American people often don't realise that America is not one the best countries in the world, simply because they are a much larger country and have "the best views". Like, I live in Portugal, so we are a very small country, but we have one of the best and richest history in the world. We are a country of fishermen and sailors, so we have beautiful castles right next to some beaches. More than half of American people have never even seen a beach. And it's not just my country, Europe is so beautiful! Austria, France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Poland, they all have such wonderful views and a lot of them are generally so peaceful and beautiful. America has a lot of really good cities and sights of course, but why do you think there are so many celebrities and athletes, and authors, etc. that decided to move here? And just a side note for many people out there who get a little confused with this one: Africa is not a country. It's a continent. Angola, Luanda, Egypt, etc., are the actual countries.

I am from Finland Once there was this american couple and their teenage son on train from airport to Helsinki. The couple kept mocking Finnish people and architecture they saw from train window entire journey, their son looked so embarrassed. The train was packed by Finns on the way to work at morning. As true Finnish fashion, nobody said a word. Until one stop before Helsinki. One guy politely notified the father that "Everybody in this train understands English and can hear you", Whole train had been staring them for a while now (me included). Needless to say that rest of the trip the couple where very awkwardly quiet.

In Europe, you usually see multiple sizes on the same clothes, like a UK 10 is a EU 38 and Italian 2, so most people in Europe are aware of the existence of multiple clothing sizes. I was in a Uniqlo (Japanese shop) in London, and they use S/M/L sizing but they also include the measurements in both centimetres and inches, eg Bust 31-33 inches, 79-84 cm. Really couldn't be clearer. Anyway, an American woman stopped one of the shop assistants and said "what is this in American sizes?". The girl said "I don't know" and the American woman was like "this is ridiculous, how am I meant to know what size to get?". Like why would an English shop assistant in a Japanese shop in London know how American sizes work? The world doesn't revolve around America.

I had to explain to her that the longest border that my country has is with... Spain, the country from where Spanish language is coming from. That my home is just a 2 hours drive from it. And also had to explain to her that Spanish to me is nothing like an exotic language to me since both french and spanish actually derive from the same language... latin. Make the goals bigger to make scoring easier, reduce the two halves from 45 minutes to 35 to allow for more advertising, reduce the number of players from 11 to 10 and a few others. I moved to Australia (from South Carolina) in 2005. The MOST common question I got asked by friends and family was what Australians eat for Thanksgiving. I was like, Uhhh, ...that only exists in America. Oh, and they asked me why I didn't call on thanksgiving day (this was mostly family) and I replied that I had to work. Again, they were shocked that I didn't have THEIR holiday off. I was so shocked by something that seemed so simple to me. I certainly never expected Aussies to celebrate American holidays, like thanksgiving and July 4th. We have our own holidays here. The other thing that blew my mind was the idiots who thought I lived in the future because I'm 15 hours ahead. I had several people ask me to look up the lottery numbers - and they were serious. A lot of Americans seem to think that they won WW1 and WW2. The USA played almost no part at all in WW1. It was almost over when the US troops started arriving (a few years late as normal). It was similar in WW2, although the US did contribute much more. By mid 1942, when US troops were arriving in Europe in numbers, the Germans were already in retreat everywhere - Russia, North Africa, etc. The USA shortened the war by years true, but the US war winning effort was before troops arrived. It was their huge industry and the supplies sent to England and Russia. The UK and Empire fought alone for some time, the Russians won it militarily at massive sacrifice, the USA enabled that win and helped ensure Western Europe did not become communist after. That is why we were allies.

@@stevegray1308 I have seen lectures from the US WW1 Museum in Kansas on KZfaq and the US historian discounted the 100 days campaign of the Commonwealth forces, insisting the pouring in of reserves from US to support the French in mass attacks were decisive at the end of WW1. In the Commonwealth the argument tends to be that the British were involved as much as the Anzacs, Canadians and others, though it must be said many of the successful tactics were from Generals from those countries, who did not want to waste their men in big pushes and came up with integrated warfare, twenty years before it was called Blitzkrieg. I asked Ethan, from Midwest Americans, if he knew of the museum and he said he had been to see it. The New World can rightly lay claim to a decisive part in WW1 victory, but the US is pushing it to claim the leading role. It might have been different if the US Generals had been allowed to fight to the end and beat the Germans in Berlin, as they wanted, because they said it would stop the Germans wanting to try again.

@Alan Smithee not sure about that. In the Western front, comprising millions of troops, the USA had about 270,000 troops there by the end - not enough for a great influence. One big influence they did have was on the morale of German leadership as they could clearly see how things were heading. The blockade by the UK and France was really hurting Germany by then.

We were filling in some paperwork and my friend was looking for her ethnicity but couldn't find it as she was 'Black - British'. She had to fill in 'other' and then when we handed it in, again it was to a teacher, they tried to convince her she had to be African American... because there can't possibly be any people of colour in the world identifying as anything other than African, Caribbean, or American. The thing is, Americans bang on about their written constitution, which was originally taken from the English Bill Of Rights... We realized, as the modern world was indeed approaching, it was outdated, and we needed to scrap it, which we did. Now we have an "unwritten constitution", which consists of thousands of individual Bills passed by Parliament and is a delicate balance between peoples freedoms and laws, and is always updated, our system is omni, theirs is sheer static, and for that reason, is why it causes so much trouble, there is no maneuvering to make things better, they say it keeps them free, but, it actually doesnt, it hems them in. So while Americans cling to something that probably made sense all them years ago, we moved on.

He told me they were brainwashed and indoctrinated from children to think America is the greatest country in the world. I have since discovered it is true (the brainwashing, not that America is the greatest country in the world). I asked why and he told me it is because they needed something to pull all of the people together, because America is made up of people from everywhere and they needed a common ground. The common ground was being a proud patriot to the country, and to be a proud patriot they had to believe it was the best place on earth. Hence the brainwashing and indoctrination.

I was working in Victoria British Columbia during a the Vancouver EXPO summer, when we were inundated more than usual by international tourists and a great wave of Americans. Almost daily, Americans were being stopped at the border, getting their guns confiscated, and being arrested (depending upon their aggressive reaction) and deported for trying to bring their guns across the border, claiming they had the right to arms... but not realizing they actually did not when entering another sovereign country with different laws. However, it was a Texan who got through who said the dumbest thing to me. I was working in a hotel gift shop that my mother had bought (I was the summer manager actually) and he came up to the counter and threw a handful of post cards from Friday Harbour, Anacortes, and Seattle at me. He said "I don't know what's wrong with y'all!?! I am trying to mail there home. It's bad enough having to deal with y'all's Monopoly money, but no post office will take my postcards!! I just want to know where I can mail these!!!??? I looked at the cards and said that this isn't a problem; he can mail them at any postbox about 40 kilometres, or 30 miles, south of Victoria. He looked at me and said in a threatening manner, "Are you trying to be funny?" I replied "No sir. That queue you came through at the Ferry Terminal or along the highway was an international border with customs officers. You are not in the USA anymore. We are not banks or exchange houses, and do not have to accept American currency. Additionally, you have covered you postcards with American stamps, and these are not valid nor usable in Canada. You would need to either buy official Canadian postage to add to your cards to mail them within Canada, or take the Ferry back to Port Angeles in Washington state toail them." I had to smile and add, "As it is clear you do not travel much, if at all, and probably never out of your own country, I am happy to take some time to patiently explain how currency and postage works to you." He gathered up his cards and left without another ignorant word out of his mouth.

The Greencard thing. My mom had a similar problem. My mom and dad have been married for 19 years, but then dad had to go back to the US (military life) and mom and I came with him. With me, no problem because I had both citizenships...my mom...yeah she had trouble getting her Visa because EVERYONE thought she had married my dad for a greencard. She had to explain multiple times that she had already been married to dad for 19 years before moving to the USA, she didnt plan on staying in the USA for long (he only had a 4 year stint before retiring), that she never really planned on moving to the US, and that she had her own home from before she married my dad. People couldn't believe that people existed that married a US for love and not a greencard. Not even my neighbors could understand why mom didnt want a greencard. I even had to show up and prove my mom was my mom as some lady thought mom was lying. Who hurt your offices?

I live in northern Canada. I remember back when I was in college, there was a woman from Alabama in one of my classes who had married a Canuck and moved here. She said they were watching something once and the War of 1812 came up; She asked her husband "What war was that?" And he just looked at her and said "... You guys invaded us and we won," or words to that effect.

As an American I am utterly embarrassed by this. I can’t imagine living in this world without some level of awareness of it. Sure I love my country but I don’t like where we are at right now. As a parent of 2 Gen Zers I have peppered them with knowledge and facts their whole lives. I have discussed wars in other countries. I have discussed history, in the US and the world. I have made sure they always considered perspectives and views outside of their own. The US hasn’t always made good decisions in history but it’s important to acknowledge when we are wrong. No, America is not the best country ever, and it’s not wrong to say it.

Regarding the translation flag, as an English person it really annoys me when software only has a USA flag and not a UK one. There are enough linguistic differences that good software provides both. Watched a program recently where an 'emminent' American History professor became irate as the audience were unhappy with America enabling and supporting (let's face it most of the world hate America for this) Israeli genocide and Crimes against Humanity. He shouted "you people don't appreciate that America 'invented' Democracy. The Irish audience were stunned. This man was teaching History and didn't know the long history of Democracy. If he's one of their Great and Good I dread to think what the rest of them are like. FYI Americans your country has never been a Democracy and the vast majority of you are descended from British not Irish. Irish people were deemed sub-human and treated appallingly by Americans until 1963. Even if you have Irish ancestors you are not Irish, you are American. Is it so shameful to be American that have to prefix American with another nationality.

Based on my experience in France (it may have even been in Normandy, but I think it more likely was in Brittany), the one problem I see with this story and why it almost certainly is apocryphal is the little problem of two different languages. Either the GI would have to speak French, which I find a bit hard to believe, or the elderly French lady would have to speak English, which I find particularly hard to believe. Personal experience: buying postcards & stamps in a tourist shop in a small seaside town, I did not speak French, the person behind the counter did not speak English. And that was in a tourist shop, in the age of the internet. ETA: I certainly am not self-centered enough to have expected them to speak Czech. 😉 I was there years ago on a school trip and most of the time got by with help of classmates who did study French. Buying postcards and stamps was simple enough that we managed with gestures.

I found it interesting when Omicron hit Spain first. I took it as an opportunity to learn from their findings while many Americans seemed to be like "Wtf, why are we going to listen to some 2nd world country?!" (It's actually a 1st world country and considered to be one of the more medically advanced countries in the world). Americans suddenly seemed down on Spain and highlighted their superiority over them. Which to me is remarkable given it was King Ferdinand of Spain who commissioned Columbus ultimately colonize the West. Even the fact that "America" itself is named after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer is notable because how can a society like America assume superiority over countries that were advanced beyond compare centuries before America even existed? Especially the people who've never even been to these counties or experienced their way of life. Even read about them. The American propaganda machine is that strong. Lol, so strong that as a Canadian I actually thought I was American until the age of 6. American superiority is only in the form of the almighty buck. And I'd be a rich country too if I had 330 million taxpayers who I didn't have to give any universal healthcare or other standard social benefits to because I've convinced them it's evil and any country that provides their citizens social benefits is inferior and communistic. Mark up insulin by 1000% and be cheered on because capatilism is king. I'd be rich af too with the biggest military and big old mansions and all that jazz. But my people wouldn't. The tax payers funding me wouldn't. Yeah, America's superiority seems to come from the ability to make it's people willing to gift the 1% with their blood sweat and tears rather than elect those fighting to redirect that wealth back to them because the propaganda machine says they're communists. Almost like the current model was a workaround for the 13th ammendment. Can't have slaves but we can make a system that let's people believe they're free, but really they'll owe their souls to the company store even after they die. It's pretty archaic but brilliant I guess if it works. If you can convince the hamster that their little wheel is a luxury and all they'll ever need to be satisfied in life. All you have to do is never let them look outside, at the majority of hamsters running free in the field.

I tried to explain to her that they are completely different cities but she wasn’t getting it, so instead I decided to just have some fun and told her “Leeds used to be a small farming village in east London, but then in 2012 Henry the eighth kicked Leeds out of London to make more room”.
