The thing is, what most Americans don't understand, that these Clubs, Football or Basketball or whatever are a huge part of the identity of the city. They exist for mostly 100 years or something and clubs don't move around from one city to another like in the US sometimes. So the supporters have a totally different level of identification with it.

The biggest difference between Europe and USA is the fact that usually in Europe you are supporting your town, village or the place you grew up in. That gives it a sense of "protecting" your place or show everyone your pride. It's more difficult to do that if the team you are supporting could a few hours from where you live. In some cases in the US, there are states without a team. In Europe even the most remote village has at least a football (soccer) team.

These people are probably the same people that make football stadiums so loud. In Europe many clubs are multi-section clubs. This means they have basketball teams as well as football teams and some other sports. In such case you're a fan of your CLUB, so you go to many games regardless if it's football, basketball or whatever.

What generate this love and dedication of the fan in Europe is that the clubs aren't franchise that can change town whenever it is convenient to them, these clubs are part of the town and will never go anywhere, it creates a bond impossible in US sport system. If you add on top of that the relegation process, the european cups for the better teams of each country ... well you see the result.😅

Can’t get my head around that. Imagine the owners of Real Madrid,Manchester United or Liverpool announcing “ ok,we’re moving the whole club to the other end of the country” or maybe even to another country!! The fans of those clubs would tear the place down and then go after the owners. It happened once among two lower league clubs called Wimbledon and the newly formed Milton Keynes Dons. They moved 80miles away and the whole football nation was disgusted. Hasn’t happened since. Can’t buy tradition.

obviously you have absolutely no clue how the Euroleague (top european club championchip in Basketball) works. It is a closed shop. they are dreaming of becoming profitable as the NBA but they are actually burning money like hell and thats why the big clubs as the shareholders of the league are selling the game and their souls... for example for some dirty petro dollars to Dubai. And the fans are only valued due to marketing reasons. you better wake up.

Additional context for Red Star Belgrade, between 8:35 and 10:30. The fans are chanting in order to block out the sound of Euro League anthem as a protest. The speakers are blasting the anthem of Euro League but it's not actually heard. The umpires had to "guess" when the anthem was over before they proceeded with starting the match.

It's not just noise. Ultras are on every call, sub, they're watching the bench, timeouts, they're in the game with the players before start until finish. Here are things that Gianluca Basile said in an interview after losing in Euroleague's final against Maccabi Tel-Aviv about their fans: "We had a good feeling before the game. We felt that the pressure was on Maccabi, that we were coming in as underdogs and would play more freely. We were in an excellent mental state and ready one hundred percent, but the moment we stepped onto the court everything changed. It was like entering the crater of a volcano. To be honest, on the stairs, Patricio Prato told me we'd never make it out alive, but I told him it always feels that way and after a few minutes, it passes. When the players were introduced and they presented us, there was a sort of chorus of boo. I had never heard anything like it. Our legs were literally shaking. It was an unbelievable situation. I never thought a crowd could have such an impact, but the game was over before it even began. There, I began to think maybe what Prato told me was right. When the game started, everything exploded in our faces, and if I thought we could ignore the crowd and the atmosphere, Maccabi proved us wrong, ending the game within five minutes. In the first timeout, Rafa already said we didn't come here to be Maccabi's doormat, but even he understood. It was a strange timeout, as if we all understood that we wouldn't win here, so at least we'd fight for our dignity. By halftime, we already wanted to be on the plane. To fly away as fast as possible. We felt like Maccabi's playthings and their audience."

These fans are also football (soccer) ultras, the clubs of Aris Thessaloniki and Panathinaikos in Greece has both football and basketball teams and the fans attend matches of both sports, often they will clash with fans of other Greece basketball teams. A few other European countries may have the same atmosphere at a basketball game. It's the combination of having football and basketball teams in the same clubs which makes these sporting events so outrageous, you will not find it on this scale in most of Europe I'm afraid, a basketball match between the Dutch top teams is very tame in comparison.

You are spot on. Your hypotheses on how it feels to be in such a crowd... you stop being an individual You're dragged into this vibe, that makes all thousands of you to one single ''thing''. Unififed I mean. I've just felt it on Anfield and Liverpool matches. so not been to a basketball game for instance. But in Europe, it's the same fans. Especially if the football team also have other teams in different sprots, it's the same ultras supporting their team or city, no matter what the sport is. Especially Eastern Europe and South-Eastern Europe. The feeling btw, are s o strong the first time, you feel like you're gonna cry, because it is just that beautiful. The sheer roar in your ears, and the adrenaline in your body... It's an out of body experience for sure. Trust me, after such a experience, you do understand more why someone could get pumped up and wants to fight. Not saying I do understand the fighting, but you get a feeling of why it COULD happen. You get really riled up. One thing though; there is a huge difference, where I think you, USA, got it better. I wish we had the same popularity with college sprots, or even high school. Meaning, I wish we also got these HUGE stadiums, and that it was a popular to watch, even when high schoolers and college students played. That differs ofc, from country to country. but college sports I would say pretty sure isn't even close to what you do in America, on a range of sports; Soccer, Football, basketball, track and field, cheerleaders, atheltics... Like, you got SO MUCH you can choose from or do in America, when it comes to schools. Not just sports either. That is really cool.

Most if not all of these are not basketball teams but Clubs also known as Sporting Clubs etc. Clubs are the hole name badge and the thing that represents the people, the town etc. Most if not all basketball teams have a football team counterpart under the same club thats why the fans are so driven and passionate here , the same fan who lights flares and gets into fights for the club does that for all sports of the Club sometimes even in volleyball/handball/waterpolo and more . Also as i said most of these Clubs represent towns/cities/suburbs and they have deep roots in their communities.

In Europe ,if you are a fan of a football team ,usually the football clubs ,have also a basketball team or a handball team ,so the fans are going to all the clubs teams games ,no matter which sport it is.Saturday are going to the football game and sunday are going to the basketball game,or sometimes the games are in the same day.The reason is that the fans love the entire club, which can have numerous teams in different sports.

Serbia, Greece and Turkey are unique in the world of sport-fans on so many levels. What is casual game after working week for others, for us it's like a purpose of life. And even when someone disagrees they change their mind once they come to the game and get infected by the atmosphere. That's true emotion and people really care for a win, celebrate it or getting really mad after loss, and sometimes violent. Mostly it's not a place for kids because it's not rare for things to get out of control. In USA for example, they have security guards around the court, in Europe we have armed forces with big shields and all the equipment usual for street riots. It's not possible for fans of two opposite sides to be close one to another. Not rare situation that police even uses water cannons or rubber bullets to keep things in check but that part mostly applies for games between archrivals (derby games of extreme security risk). Both, love for your team and hate for an opponent are at extreme level in Europe.

Clubs are integral for the each city. They move up and down leagues, they don't switch players every year. It's cultural, and a great way to keep old rivalries alive.

How it happens is basically when a group of lads or a fan club come up with a chant and do it in a stadium, people nearby them will join in until it gets bigger. If the chant happens enough time and it catches on, then all the regulars will know what to say when they hear it. Random people will start the chant and others will join in. Before you know it, everyone who knows the sport knows the chant. If you knew the words to a popular chant, you could literally go into the stadium and start the chant and people would join in. Just make sure you're doing the right chant for the right location.

In Europe, it doesnt matter what type of "sport" it is, be it football/soccer, basketball, rugby, shooting sports or else. You cheer for your hometown club, nothing more, nothing less. "Ultras" are also often cross sport related aslong its THEIR hometown club.

There are some KZfaq videos of American players who have played in Europe. There are many reasons why the crowd is like this. It is generational, you don't switch teams. And ticket prices are much more affordable, so all socioeconomic groups can go to a game without saving for months. People are loyal to their team no matter what sport it is.

A lot of the clubs in europe have different sports within the club.. the clubs are usually NOT business but member owned football, basketball, athletics etc.. so many of the fans/ultras will support not only the football team but the teams of the other sports within their club as well..

The fanatics or ultras have clubs where they meet up and make new chants and bring in flares and even bombs, weapons. I've been to games like this, no women or kids attend. If you are not used to this kind of atmosphere your in for a shock. These fans are the same that go to the soccer games too. In Europe all clubs have soccer, basketball, water polo, volleyball, even ping pong teams.

The town I was born in has a handball team. Right now they are back in the first league. They play in a very small very old venue with a capacity of 3000 people. It's so small and cramped, and the crowd is so loud that TV announcers and even coaches of other teams said that it is just madness playing there with a lot of people basically two feet behind the players shouting away for 60+ minutes.

In Greece and in the east Europe (balkan nations over all like Serbia) the crowd at Basket matches is simply over the top, crazy, passionate,.. like for football (european meaning of the word ;-) ) all over the continent or ice hockey in central-northern europe (including Russia of course). For us being a fan is not just "loving" and supporting our team: it's pure passion. And it's fun, and it's having a beer watching a match, chanting, jumping,.. like 5 yo's boys in a kindergarten playground 😀

The home team at this game (first clip from European basketball) is Aris (yellow black) and the opponent is PAOK (black white). Both from Thessaloniki, Greece. PAOK just a few days ago signed Kevin Porter jr. You should see KD's face at a game in Athens between Olympiacos and Monaco for Euroleague semifinals two years ago.

I bet you won't see such a spectacle in Scandinavia (I even wonder if they play basketball over there). Game 3: I see "Panathinaikos", that's Athens: Greeks again.

As many others have pointed before... it's not what you' d expect to see on Europe as a whole, but mainly Italy- Balkans- Greece- Turkey. On the western side of Europe you'll find also noisy fans groups, but not to such level (which, in fact, became a violent outrage in many times. And so when matches occur between teams from this countries and others, it uses to be considered as a dangerous match, specially if played on their stadiums).

The Ultras in the Football Stadium and round the Basketball court are often the same people. Being a die hard ultra is close to a full time job. They visit traingings, youth team games, 2nd team / amateur games, the basketball games, prepare Tifos for Match days, sell their own Merch etc. What you see here are the Basketball divisions of major football (soccer) clubs. And that's true for the majority of the top Basketball teams. They are usually a division of a club that covers many sports, with Football usually being the no1 revenue bringer. Often the Basketball teams of clubs in Serbia or Greece for example are top tier in Europe though, while their football divisions are nowhere near even being in contention for winning European trophies.
