The British police have the power to arrest you if they genuinely (not reasonably, just genuinely) suspect you of having committed an arrestable offence. This chap was not arrested, just detained. However, had he exercised his “right” to leave, he would have been legally arrested as his attempt to leave would have created a suspicion on the part of the police officers that he was guilty of an arrestable offence, because people generally are co-operative. Attempting to leave would be a demonstration of non-co-operation, and therefore a source of genuine suspicion of involvement in a criminal offence.

I thought the female officers were calm and professional as was the boss man who came in and backed them up.

In the US in order to be detained the police officer has to have reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed. These officers said that the two men matched the description, I don't know if that's true but if it is then that would have met the reasonable suspicion requirements to detain this man. I'm not sure if in the US just simply being in the nearby vicinity when a violent crime had been comitted would be reason enough to detain someone. But if none of these were true then in the US this man may have actually had a point. Of course he's in Britain though. Here in the UK the police officer is allowed to detain these men because a serious crime has been committed nearby and an investigation has to be carried out. The police can only do this if certain types of crime have been carried out. If these two gentlemen actually matched a description then even more so. That might sound unfair to people in the US because "it violates my rights" and all that stuff. But in the UK we accept that this is a necessary precaution needed to be made in rare circumstances when someone who has committed a serious crime needs to be caught. The needing to go to the toilet thing is sad, but also necessary. Can't have a critically important individual to the investigation going to the toilet and disposing of evidence or using the opportunity to escape. Also Police officers in the UK have to have a university degree or work through a sort of apprenticeship programme and on top of that go through two years of training in all matters pertaining to their job before they get their warrant card and are allowed to police the streets. So these officers are educated despite this man's assertions. 4:16
@TheM0JEC
@TheM0JEC 3 ай бұрын
The reason he could not use the toilet was not directly to do with ‘disposing of evidence’ but that that area was a ‘crime scene’ which they were trying to preserve so evidence could be collected. If they suspected these gents had items of evidence on their person they would have been being searched. It’s not unusual when a serious enough offence has been committed for police to ‘lock down’ the area and only allow folks to leave once they have completed sufficient investigation to allow that lock down to be lifted. Until then no one would be allowed to leave.

The British police control a situation by engagement and persuasion - even if the person they are talking to is cantankerous or rude. The outcome the police want is for evryone to stay there without arresting them and that's what they get by argument, reason and persuasion. The guys are irritating and dumb but it's interesting they stay to argue - they believe they can walk away but they are so invested in the argument they carry it on and that is the outcome the police want to achieve. I say British police - I'm not saying American other police forces never do this but I think it's less common (being unarmed helps - you're less likely to argue with someone who has a gun).

The guy is at a crime scene.... the police officers in charge are non-aggressive and really polite and explanatory ... the guy filming is a drama queen and feels like being the victim... he is not.... they treat him as an adult and ask for his cooperation.... unfortunately he is from an almost fascist American society, American citizens are often being treated like cattle ... besides the fact that this guy who is filming is still rather immature he probably is also quite traumatised, or perhaps a better word: deformed by the American society he grew up in and probably still is living in. Any normal adult who is not guilty would comply with these very intelligible and polite police officers.... also to help them to clear up the crime ...

It's a habit a lot of Americans have. I recently was told by an American that he knew the facts, about a topic we were discussing concerning my country's history, better than I do because he supposedly has a degree in history. He was incorrect about most of them and, in my country, are basic common knowledge. He continued to argue the same points even after I used logic to explain how he was wrong. For example: certain events couldn't have happened when he said they did because it's well documented that they occurred before another well documented event. If you cooperate with the police person it goes a lot smoother. The man might know the law in his own country but it is not necessary the same over in UK

I'm finding the American guy very irritating hes not listening to the WPC or PC officers 😠 why can't he just be quiet and let them do their jobs he keeps asking if he is free to go and he's just not acknowledging what's being said to him he also has to remember that he is in the UK & not the US so our laws are so diffrent & has to realise what the wrongs & rights are here simple as... The sooner he starts listening the sooner things will get sorted he needs to show some respect to our police force 👮👍🏻👍🏻

If you're suspected of being involved in a crime and you are so insistent that you need the bathroom that would raise suspicions even further. Why the urgency? Getting rid of a weapon or some other sort of incriminating evidence. They guy's not very bright, is he?

Saying his camera is more important clearly shows he doesn't understand British law. On the British law the moment something is recorded in public by the police it becomes public property you have every right to access it and have copies. This is not América.

The police have a number of different powers depending on the severity of the situation he is very lucky under some circumstances like bomb threats this would have gone much worse for him. The key is you never know what the situation is and its both always possible to have it explained so we know to cooperate best we can and not to interfere. It also shows a level of selfishness some thing has happened and all he can think is lets mess with the police and upload it

I've been detained more than once from not being able to leave my house to having to stay inside a shop. Yes it's extremely annoying but never have I once felt the need to argue. I understood the situation and the Police are just doing their jobs. They have always been respectful. What's the point in starting prolonging the situation. In fact he is lucky he is in the UK because Many other European countries would not of been so polite back to the gentleman.

Yes charlie you are right , i live in Spain and the police wouldn't be as polite with him. You just would be too afraid to question anything a Spanish police officer would say to you. No messing.

Btw, if there was a toilet that wasn’t part of the crime scene, they would have to let him use it, he just has to be supervised by an officer. It was only that toilet specifically that he couldn’t use due to being in the crime scene.

You can't help but wonder if that American is testing those two police officers to see whether they will beat him up, shoot him or taser him lol. Looks like they just wanted a nice friendly chat with him lol, but anyway, police in most European countries are about de-escalation of a situation. Also, the reason I think it was a test is because I highly doubt he would speak to the police like he's doing here with how they react lol. The irony is, what he was actually doing made him sound more guilty then he actually is, which could have got him into trouble lol.

This guy is so rude, constantly over talking and is disregarding what she is saying. A educated person would know how to behave when addressing a police officer. He is in a foreign country and assuming he knows the law. I am sure he would have been put in handcuffs and forced into a police car if he was in his home country.

Our police pretty much mirror how you act. If you’re respectful, they’re respectful to you. If you’ve got an attitude they’ll have an attitude back, but they’ll do it in a professional way so you have nothing to lodge a complaint about. It took me until my late 20s to realise that “yes sir, no sir” was the best approach if I didn’t wanna sleep on a cold blue mattress with no pillow or blanket 🤣 Do that and they’ll generally apologise for inconveniencing you and wish you a good day.

The police won't let you enter a place which they believe a crime has taken place, and this was during Notting Hill Carnival which is held over a few days with a couple of million in attendance. The police had ever right not letting anyone use the toilet, people need too remember when visiting another country abide by the rules set out, I have lived and worked in the Middle East and he wouldn't have got away with this behaviour there, respect where you're visiting or living

What amazes me though is that if a crime had been committed against him, he would expect the police to do a thorough investigation, making sure to question everyone around for suspects & witnesses. Clown! how do these people think crimes are solved? Of course public cooperation is needed. If u ain’t done nowt wrong just bloody do as they ask. It ain’t that hard. It’s so Weird to me🤔

This shows how arrogant some Americans can be. All the officers are displaying patience and are trying to investigate some kind of misdemeanour. Show respect, if this was some counties they’d have the handcuffs on him by now.
