From our point of view, the whole continent is North America and there is another one, called South America. - All - citizens of - all - countries in both continents are or should be called Americans. The same as all Frenchs and Germans are Europeans as well. But you US guys claim/name yourself as the Americans, because you have named your country United States of America. So not to mix you up with Canadians, Mexicans or Brazilians, we call you 'US-Americans' (in news etc.), if we mean all of a specific continent we say North or South Americans. And people of all Americas are the Americans, as simple as that. So this a simple example, how you can represent yourself as ignorant and/or overbearing against the rest of the world.

Since the man in the video works in the Netherlands, here is some information about sick leave. It is true, like you came up with, some people take advantage of the sick leave system. Most collective work agreements know a 'waiting day'. This means you don't get paid for your 1st or first 2 sick days to prevent the monday hangover 'sickness' 😉. Unless you were sick from the same issue within 4 weeks prior. This sucks for women who suffer from monthly cycli headaches. They are the same issue, but many times júst out of the 4 weeks period 😁 prior. No need to go to family dokter for a note, they are busy as it is already. If sick longer you will receive an appointment to go to the company docter who is not employed by the company, but through is a collective arrangement. This docter will asses if you are, or not and for how long you are granted sick leave. Possibly followed by a next appointment in 2 or more weeks. You do have to call in sick at your employer on day 1 before your workday would start. Or earlier (evening before if possible of course) if there has to be made arrangements to fill your place at work. Like shifts or in a store. First 2 years of sickness, in case long term, employer pays 170% wages, devided over those years, usually 100% 1st year, 70% 2nd year. May have changed by now in favor of company costs. After 2 years, social security kicks in with unemployment benefits. After assesment of course. That may be a percentage of your earnings, because you may be able to work part of the hours you did before. This is why it is called social security. Not socialist, but social. Common mistake made by Americans to mix those two up.

One of my Swedish friends was exchange student in the US (Texas, I think). He heard things like that ALL the time. "I'm Swedish." Similar here in Italy: only your family doctor (or the ER) can issue a sick leave certification, and your company can send a doctor to your house to check on you, if you're not home when he comes by (without justification, if you're in the hospital for an exam you're justified) or he finds that you're not sick at all, that's ground for contract termination. Also sick leave is paid at 50% of your average daily pay for the first 20 days, 66% for successive days, for up to 180 days per solar year.

Same in the Netherlands. If you're ill you're out. If you fake it you get a warning, fake it too often and you're in serious s**t.

Gotta add to that: Here in Germany you can be sick as long as your doctor says you are. There is a law that prevents you for being fired while being sick or pregnant. During the first six weeks of an ongoing sickness you get full pay by your employer, after that you still count as employed ( and can go back after you recover), but the medical social system pays you about 70% of your original wages in your employers stead. That prevents the employe from not getting money and the employer from paying for possible years of sickness without return.

If an employer believes that someone is abusing the 3 days leeway to get a doctors note, they can ask for that on the first day, it's legal (in Germany). Even if all other employees only have to have a note on the 3rd day, but that does require arguments. So, if a company just wants to bully someone out of the job, because they can't fire him, it is an option to ask for a doctors note on the first day - but the employee can go to court to get the 3 days like everyone else, except if the company can prove that there is evidence of the said person to abuse the leeway rule. It's not always easy either way and there can always be people trying to abuse the system, but most people don't. (I'm not saying it doesn't happen, there will always be people that try their hardest to not have to do anything)

Yeah, for me living in Germany, where the health insurance is at the more expensive side (though the employer pays half of it and half is deducted from your income before you receive it). It is still about the same amount for employees as an average american health insurance. And still, people have to choose between going broke or potentially literally dieing despite that, it just goes beyond me how such a system can still exist AND be tolerated by the citizens who believe their country being the greatest in the world. And here in Germany, the germans are the first ones to sniff out even the slightest flaw in anything - and they are not too shy to tell anyone who doesn't run away fast enough.

Here in germany, you will see the doctor (and that will be for free, since: ...we have universal healthcare) and he will examine you. He will give you a document, confirming you are unable or in unproper condition to go to work. Usually, you won't be just calling at work, telling them you are sick. (Even though you can do this for a small period of time without proof, your boss can demand you to provide a proper document from a doctor. )

It basically is the case in the rest of the civilised developped world... Only America is a "Third World dressed in Gucci" as I read aboard... Even Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, which are poor countries in Europe, have an decent Healthcare system.

Also specialist treatment. I was in a public hospital for 2 days excellent care XRays blood tests and nursing care treatment and advice from doctors. All FREE! in Australia.

Much the same in the UK, with the 3 days thing. Also companies do monitor how many days your use and how often and look for patterns, like regular 'sick Mondays' could mean issues at weekends with alcohol or drugs.

Same for germany, basically. You got 3 days per se (without need for an doctors note), everything above that requires said note. I'm not really sure how it is in the US, but these notes here are official documents. Not only are they needed for your employer (who just gets to know the time you're out), but also for the Krankenkasse (healthcare provider), who will take over not only the cost of your treatment, but also your payment if you are sick for more than... 6 weeks it is, i guess? It's not 100%, but at least 80% of your income. So, yeah... you CAN abuse those 3 days (i don't even know if this is by law or just a "general agreement") in a year, but well - 3 days a year barely count, i think. Happens, but it's more or less insignificant. Although, if you abuse the system and it can be proven, you'll risk your job over here also. Same goes if you called in sick, but work another job - you are sick, or you are not. You are allowed everything considered recreational, but no working... ;)

@@ChristianBeckerKapraun The 3 days without a doctors notice in Germany is the maximum allowed by law, however your employer can decide to require a doctors notice even for a single sick day. So it's a risk calculation for your employer: If he allows 3 days without notice, some people might abuse this to take a day or two off. However, if he requires a note on day one, people with small illnesses that usually would be recovered after a day or two (like a headache or tummy-ache) have to go to the doctor who usually puts you on sick leave for the whole week, even if you would be able to return to work after a few days. If there is some level of trust between the employer and the employees, they will usually allow the three days.

(More like 2 days actually, as you have to see the doctor on the third day) However, as I said in my previous comment, if you abuse this too often and destroy your employers trust, he will probably request a notice on day one in the future.

Also, if you're on sick leave, there are certain things you're not allowed to do, because you're meant to be using the time off to recuperate. If a co-worker spots you at an amusement park or drinking in a bar while you're on sick leave, you might get fired because that's abusing your sick leave. Depending on the type of illness, going for a walk or some light exercise like jogging in the park might be fine, you don't need to stay in bed the whole time, but you need to be able to justify your outings.

Here in Germany, I hardly ever get frowned upon for a sick day on Monday/Friday, but then I hardly have any or over a longer period of time. (like, report in sick on Monday and deliver a doctors note on Tuesday for the rest of the week) So, my bosses know that I trully am sick that day or not feeling well enough to work and that it's not because of partying. It's got something to do with trusting people, maybe? But surely, your company knows you well enough after all this time, that they don't think you'd abuse the system?

The NHS doesn't pay for all cancer treatments and if you have dementia / are old, you will have to pay for all your care home costs which will cost you £1,000 a week depending on your area. There ARE medical / health costs in the UK, but they remain obscure for some reason.

@@bogdanmihai7106 Fair enough. I'm not saying health care is bad in the UK. If you don't work / not a tax payer, then, yes, many health services are free. But there's this fallacy that everyone in the UK gets free healthcare. The NHS is funded mainly by tax payers through national insurance contributions and taxes. ALL workers pay this way by having their "contributions" deducted from their wages. But, everyone's used to it and don't really notice as it happens automatically. No one really talks about it. And that's more palatable than being hit with a HUGE medical bill like Americans are.

Very similar in Germany. You can be checked, if they have doubt, you will see a salary decrease after 6 weeks of calling in sick straight, but other than that, the sick days are paid and unlimited. On the contrary: the employer even has tu check back with you, if you were sick for many days over the last year and has to offer you a non-mandatory discussion. In that, they'll evaluate together with you (and the workers' counsil, if that's existing in that company and they are not that uncommon), how they can help you to reintegrate yourself into the normal working life again. That goes down to having to work for less days for a couple of months or getting medical advice/counseling. But the employer has no right in enquiring about your actual sickness... Most employers allow you to use three days without having to show a doctor's attestation even. Also, these days, those confirmations are sent to the employer and the health care insurance automatically (at least, in theory that's digitalized, now). Nevertheless, your boss would still like to know from you that your off and - for planning purpose - for how long approximately. Again, they are not entitled by law, though, to ask für the specific reason/sickness. And it's illegal to fire people just like that. As an employer, you have to prove very well that the employee is doing something very wrong. And then, the employee can still use the workers' council's help and/or complain in front of the specialised court, who - if in doubt - rather have to take their decision in favour of the employee, not of the employer. And calling out to that court is even for free for employees...

The very small percentage of people that still manage to abuse sick days doesn't compromise the integrity of the system itself. The individual and their health is prioritized by the law, not matter what.

There is no such thing as L4 since... 10 years ago or so, it's ZLA now, but you have to notify your job. Yes, they get information about ZLA from system, but it's mandatory to inform them aswell. It's 80% for, let's say, covid or flu, but, if you had accident on your way to work, at work, or way back from work, you will get 100% (wypadek w pracy/w drodze z/do pracy). Your company only pays for (i don't remember atm) 1 OR 3 months, after that, ZUS (national insurance) pays for it.

By definition, the employer cannot know (unless you trust them and want to tell it yourself) which kind of sickness you're suffering from. That's to protect the ill person from shaming or other inadequate consequences.

Exactly. Most of the time it comes down to depression or similar issues, and if that's the case then people are often allowed to go to therapists during work hours. At least to start with, so that they can eventually feel better and get back to work.

Germany: Depending on the regulations within a company or state laws, there can certainly be examination systems, discussions with the human resources department, "mandatory" examinations by the company doctor and even "dismissals by mutual agreement". And yes, it depends on which illness you suffer from and how this illness affects your work (alcohol addiction, gambling addiction and the like) It depends on the days off, conversations, etc. One of our former apprentices was always absent on Fridays or Mondays, and situations like this sometimes lead to a contract being canceled during a probationary period. Rarely, very rarely, do entrepreneurs go so far as to hire private detectives to examine the employee concerned in order to a) obtain termination without notice* and b) not have to pay severance pay. * In larger companies with a works council, the works council must agree to the termination. And in such cases, the works council usually demands a conversion into a notice of termination.

I did renovation work at home for some time after work and during that time did work less hours than normal (we have some flexibility in that). I was asked if I had personal problems, or if the work load was too much or if I want to go to less hours. They really seemed to care and not to overstress the people and were kind of relieved when I told them the reason. I did get these hours in later, so no problem. Yes, there are people who try to use that. But for longer times (more than 2 days in my company) you need a doctors note. And in that it is written what you are allowed to do: leave the bed, the house... and when you need to be seen by a doctor again. There are cases where people are controlled by the insurances or observed by detectives if there are suspicions. But that is rare. But as this is paid illness leave you get into problems if you try to scam them. You will probably be fired and have to pay back the money and more.

@@Snoop_Dugg Every termination (including settings), whether by the employer or the employee, is checked. Termination without notice, however, can only take place due to serious, legally verifiable misconduct and these must also be accessible to the works council. (for example: theft and the like). So if you are dismissed without notice because of "unlawful sick leave", evidence must be available. Otherwise the employer will not only be "ripped apart" by the works council, but also by the labor court. And usually at least 3 written warnings on one and the same topic are necessary.

Sorry about your back injury. Once you get one of those, they don't really go away and as you get older they remind you of it more regularly.

That's terrible! I'm in the UK, and have had epilepsy for nearly 40 years, since a small child. Countless MRI's, tests, scans, regular neurological check ups and daily medications the whole time. Not a penny! I simply wouldn't be able to live in the US, I could never afford it. I dread to think of the costs. Not to mention other illnesses and a few operations. I hope you're feeling better since your post, and indeed, in the future.

Trust me, there is a movement of people who adore the Kardashians and such that pride themselves in how stupid (or ignorant) they can be. They don't want to improve.

A lot of people in Germany have been brought up with the mentality that a cold is not a "real sickness" and you should be tough and come in to work anyway. My hope is that due to the experience of recent years, this mentality is gonna finally change. Not sure though, as it seems the pendulum might swing back all the way, even harder... :(

Actually in Germany you also only need a doctors note on the 3rd day. (Also you don't need to tell the employer what you are sick with) Get payed for 4 (or 6 don't remember) weeks full sick leave and after get paid 70% by insurance.

Same here in Germany. Actually, here a mother in the making can first take health related pregnancy leave from the moment she knows about it (by doctors recommendation), but the last few weeks before and after birth are mandatory. And after birth, a mother OR a father cant take paternity leave for at least a year with partial income, and another 2 years without income (so, 3 alltogether) with their jobs waiting for them to return. And if they don't wanna or can't return, they can apply for unemployment money and the paternity leave will be considered working time, but based on the income they had in their last active working job. Yes, our systems are complicated, but very efficient if you do it right. You just need to inform yourself and be patient with the paperwork, THAT is german bureaucracy at its peak.

I think there are stipulations. As an employee of a local council in Scotland, for example, you have to be employed by the council for at least a year before they will pay maternity leave and you have to make them aware of a pregnancy at a certain number of weeks.

I'm in Scotland and only got maternity allowance as I hadn't been at my job long enough. It was £60 a week

If you are in the UK, hospital visits and treatment might appear to be free but you would be shocked if you were given an invoice.. check it out…

@@silvercloak7216 even with an MRI the cost is way too high :D in austria its 200-400€ for an MRI (payed by healthcare) as an american just ask if someone is a doctor if he answeres yes then charge him this way: like for serving weight of plate, steps taken well the doctors dont make the prices usually but u get what i mean... they charge highly artificial prices that are nowhere near the real cost

Modern US Americans cannot do anything about what their country was named over 200 years ago. I recognise that the rest of the continent is 'America' but unless they (the whole of USA) decide as a nation to change their country's name, we shouldn't insult modern US people for the issues created by their ancestors.
