Hi Charley. I was born 1 year after the flood of 1953. My cradle stood,but 1,5 miles from the lowest point in the Netherlands. I lived there all my life. A few years back we got the notice that the house of me and my husband would be demolished and we had to move. Climate change with rising sealevels made us decide to move to the eastern part of the Netherlands. If we have to move, move to higher ground, we thought… Now we live in a region that lies 6 meters ABOVE sealevel. In a tower on the 9th floor. 😊 In Zuid-Holland we lived just meters away from the Hollandse IJssel river, but since last year we lived but meters away from the Gelderse IJssel. Rijswaterstaat is a great organization with many motivated people. But nature does its own thing. I feel much safer now. Thanks for diving into our country’s history.

It's fun to see you picking out the English phrases used by Dutch speakers. Many people increasingly use English phrases instead of Dutch ones. Example: He could've said "het is een hels karwei" instead of "it's a hell of a job"

I live in Den Haag/The Hague and when I ride on my road bike in the weekend I regularly go to the Maaslantkering, the big white structure in the beginning of the video. It does not fail to impress me every time I'm there. The road there btw is perfect for cycling next to the big canal, it is an amazingly beautiful spot

When I was young I also worked here on the Neeltje Jans, I worked on the first bridge section that was on the mainland, I worked there for six months and did all kinds of work to fill my day, I started at 8:00 AM, but to get there from my house I left at 7:00 AM by car and at 4:00 PM we went back home to be there again at 6:00 PM, because of the crowds on the road it took so long. I enjoyed working there, during this period I ate 14 sandwiches and 4 cups of coffee a day. It was the experience of a lifetime working here. greetings from South Holland

The 2 joints of the Maeslandkering are Ball-joints with a diameter of 8 metres . The construction of each arm is as big as the Eiffeltower rotating at the top . At the bottom of the waterway is a huge concrete threshold preventing erosion under the barrier .

Actually you mean the Rhine river, which starts in the Swiss alps, Meuse starts more north, closer to the Ardennes.. The Rhine is a combined gletsjer meltwater and a rainfall river, the meuse is only rainfall. Meuse is usually only about 10% of the amount of water the Rhine carries.

My dad worked on the electricity for the maeslandkering. He is very proud of the work the whole team has done on that. As I was a little girl we would often drive through the harbour area, and he would point out all of these interesting things that make us safer. There is so much pride that comes with working those jobs, I don't think it's possible that they forget about the dangers the water brings.

The storm of February 1953 was a turning point. It was a storm and a certain combination of factors: wind and high tide and the way the moon was (causing the high tide). It was a horror scenario that could not be predicted. Take one factor out and nothing was happened. After the storm the decision was made to protect the country against that ever happening again. That became the Deltaworks. Today we are safe, but a new danger is putting the head up: rising of the sea water level, caused by the warming up of the earth. And that is a new challenge for The Netherlands: how to keep out feet dry.

Yes the Netherlands is a kingdom. Rijkswaterstaat which is the Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management. Yes Rotterdam was the largest harbour in the world, until it was surpassed by 5 Chinese ports in volume. On the @21:31 mark, you can see Rotterdam about middle of the map. Every harbour you see is Rotterdam, stretching all the way to the sea. On the North side of the Nieuwe Waterweg are a few cities inbetween like Schiedam, Vlaardingen en Maassluis, but the start of the Red line is Hook of Holland, which is part of Rotterdam as well. on the Southside of the waterweg it's all Rotterdam, to bottom of the red line.

@chillzzx4353
@chillzzx4353 8 ай бұрын
@@Single-Pringle indeed the topic stays alive due to the waterschapsverkiezingen. The waterboards are the oldest local/regional government in the Netherlands, older than the republic, the provinces/states and or/the kingdom. They work together, and most likely they'll coordinate the larger works, , but a waterschap isn't part of Rijkswaterstaat.

The maintenance of the hartelkering on which they tore down te Gates and no back up plan whas done during the summer. Storm season when we could need to use the barier is in winter so that maintenance whas done during the ‘safe’ time of the year. Afcourse its stil a bit scary for the people that could be affected when somehow this time is different and disaster strikes during that time. But in the end we could not just deside not to do maintenance because of the what if. It would be a recepy for disaster in future.

Welcome back Charlie and hey Anthony! I heard your train of thought about problem thinking and it’s a fair assessment, but we dutch people only think in solutions, maybe that’s why we are good in what we do. I noticed myself because I’m living abroad, but sometimes people here get stuck in the problem it self, that they don’t look to any viable solution.

Rijkswaterstaat is the governmental branch that focuses purely on water manegement in the country. Together with local/provincial management. There are several ‘water boards’ that control sluisses/dikes the level of groundwater. The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy with a democraticly chosen parlement. The role of the king/queen is mostly ceremonial but they did have more power in the past. The king mostly does goodwill and trade in foreign countries. They do however still confide and advice the minister. They also adress the country yearly.

We maintain our dijken and sluisen and other flood-resisting waterworks very well Charlie, bumb Dutch folks are plentiful who dont care to know how safe they are. Those folks don't know what they are talking about, ooh scary ooh code yellow/ orange/ red whoooo scary and the storm has a name whooo scary. NOT a storm in a teacup does not deserve such upheaval, I live in Lelystad Flevoland at approx. 16 below NAP/ Sea level. I remember my the 1st November storm, windpower 12+., No code then back in 1972, but if it had it would have been code purple. The dijken were then still untested by a real real heavy heavy storm back then, ppl had inflatable boats in the attic with lifejackets etcv. Food etc. . Trees were blown down, roofs blew away trucks tipped over, you get the point Im sure. We just lived 4 months in Lelystad, we had some tense moments back then, but the dijken stood tall yeah water blew over them in waves but nothing dangerous tho. Ppl weren't allowed to go into the polder, nor could get out. So Im pretty sure while the whole Dutch anti-flood systems were improved from then on, it would take a tsunami of the mega kind to do some damage. ""Glod created the world, but the Dutch created the Netherlands"" we are safe as safe can be really, we have ""high"" taxes for a reason LOL Our infrastructure is very well maintained and updated regularly, f.e. find me a pothole older than a month, don't even bother there are none to be found LOL This is'nt Americav(sorry but it is what it is) you are worse off than us in our Koudekikkerlandje (Cold-frog-small-country) we have mastered the art of keeping our feet dry, and or built on created higher land (Terpen) near flood areas that are there to give the water somewhere to flow and yes that's mostly farm-land next to rivers. Anywho no real dangerous crap happened, since mid-1990 we had to bail out a few polders in the south Rijn, Maas etc. from the risk of dijk breakage. But the only nearly gave way, ppl were safe, I a.m.m more ppl came to help those out. That's something I'm, proud about. We thousands upon thousands got there and helped those ppl move their stuff up to the attics., total strangers helping total strangers. The traffic jam it caused was epic, from Almere to Grokum it took us about 5 hours. but Ppl had Coffee., sandwiches etc., and shared them with strangers and ppl were patient, happy, it was a blast. But going into the polder was scary, getting out as almost the last at 24. hrs with a police escort was undescribably surreal. We got back at 1.30 hrs.. and then had to store stuff we transported out of Gorkum. We got the next day off from our employers, yeah proud of my fwellow countrymen and women who selflessly did that to help out others. That generation did what was needed, without any official planning or anything needed, we just did what was needed. Hope the young uns will do that too when push comes to shove when needed. Just like in 1953 ppl stood up and got to do what was needed. We Dutch are a strange bunch LOL

21:38 - the bit in the middle (between the two river arms) is the maasvlakte 1 and 2, and connected east to the rest of the port of rotterdam. Basically the whole cement colored bit in the middle is the port. The town north is "Hoek van Holland", often seen in English as "Hook of Holland" although I dare say the actual translation should be "corner of holland" (because it is the south-western most corner of the province of south holland).

with the latest predictions for sea-level rise we (the dutch) will have to raise the sea dikes and storm flood protection with at least 3 meters to be save for the next 100 years , that sounds like a long time but it is not. Realization would take about 50 years. so that would be just in time. they will have to start in the next 10 years. (same is true for the uk and probably denmark)

21:30. On that map, the large white blob near the coast just above the artificial landmass sticking out into the North Sea, is Hoek van Holland and other smaller towns like Monster, Naaldwijk. All the white and grey roofs are in fact megalarge glass greenhouses. The landmass below that with all the areas cut out (looking a bit like airport terminals) is the Rotterdam harbours extending all the way inland to Rotterdam itself, which is the darker grey area surrounding the roughly the most inland part of the harbours. Where you see the most eastern harbour shaped a bit like an upside down tree. Along the northern side of the harbour going west from Rotterdam there's Schiedam and Vlaardingen. So the parts you were pointing at is all harbour and greenhouses. Rotterdam is further to the east more inland. Where you pointed for Dordrecht, is in fact Rotterdam.

And you talked about the fishes, it is not about a few, it is about wholes populations of certain species. And offcourse it is all built for our safety (not mine actually, live far up north), but that doesn't mean we can't look for ways of also let those fish species thrive.

I’ve seen the Delta works being built from when I was a little child. It was very impressive to walk by the pillars of the Oosterscheldekering being built in the dry docks to the height of a 12 story building and then shipped to their exact place in the delta, on centimeter accuracy level. Before the days of GPS. I was there again last year with family from Hungary and I can assure you, all these sea barriers are maintained top notch. We can’t afford not to … They’re all tested on a regular schedule And I’m with you, if people don’t like comments they should watch the original video. But I do like your comments so much that I’d rather watch your comment video than the original … All that you pointed out in the video is just a part of the port of Rotterdam, the city lies more inland. And Dordrecht even farther inland. I believe I saw in a video the other day that the port of Rotterdam is more than twice the size of Manhattan to give a clue I really love to hear and see how you’ve dive’d into the history of the Zuiderzeepolders! Shout out for you! The map was a planned map indeed, you correctly pointed out the polder that wasn’t realised. It’s now a nature reserve with a few man made islands where nobody lives. All the other polders on the map are realised though Those big black tubes of the Ramspolkering are only visible in emergency situations; I wouldn’t mind the look of them if they keep me safe in times of high waters though … Greetings and hugs for you all and especially that cute little boy, from The Netherlands!

if u want to say van der poel in with your american accent keep in mind ''oe'' sounds like ''oo'' in your country and ''van'' you should use the ''a'' from (a)ccelerate, your ''a'' sounds like an ''e''

Sometimes when we (Dutch people) talk we put an English word or sentence in between. I dunno why but even I do that.

We are a kingdom since 1815. It was forced upon us. We were a republic before, since 1588.

You already know quite a lot about the Netherlands. Such as the polders, which have and have not been built. Greetings from Spakenburg, Netherlands. #spakenburg

The River Rhine is an international waterway, can't charge for that, if we would, what would stop Germany etc from doing the same. That would be like the middle ages... Making international trade, our bread and butter as a country impossible.. Using docs in Rotterdam does cost money naturally, And we make money through the harbour..etc..

Haring vliet - herring fleet an old arm of the sea, the big rivers are connected to the sea through this arm, now the new dikes have closed off these arms.. vliet = stream from vlieden - to flow...Trying to go to the roots of the words.. as always.. In dutch we tend to make make long words out of several words...
