As an American I can safely say that we tend to ask a lot of questions that really put our ignorance of other cultures on display. Luckily this quality can be used to entertainment as well which is exactly why I am excited to learn about these top 10 questions you should never ask British people. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

i must point out that baked beans here are not like american tins of beans. for a start in america they often have lard in the ingredients whereas they are vegan here but we have tomato sauce in them not the sort of barbeque style over in america. they are actually nice here. you need to get some heinz and try them for yourself in the international section! nice on toast, with spuds (mashed or baked) or with chips (fries)

I did try, in a posh hotel in Boston, USA, pancakes with maple syrup, which I had tried before in England of course, many times but for breakfast with with scrambled eggs and bacon. It was OK but a bit strange to have the sweetness with scambled eggs and bacon. I ate it though. I ordered it to see what it was like - different, but nice enough. On the same trip I had lovely clam chowder, another dish i had seen on films and on tv as coming from New England, USA. It was delicious by the way.

When I told an American lady that we don’t have rabies in the UK, she asked if the squirrels just stopped at the border. When I said the UK is an island, she was genuinely surprised and not in the least ashamed of her ignorance because the next day I saw her again and she told me she had looked at a map and it is an island! Don’t know whether I was more amused at her ignorance or the fact that she had to fact check what I’d told her!

My little anecdote on meeting an A,erican tourist: in the late 90s, I was travelling home from work on the train and there was a couple, late 50s early 60s, obvious from their apparel and speech patterns that they were from Texas and on vacation. So I just sort of said: How are you enjoying your vacation so far... " and after some small talk the guy says, in that thick Texan accent, "Gee, I really love Scatland, it's my most fav'rite part of England!" I winced at that, after all we're Scottish, not English. I let it go for the time being and as the train approached the station I got up to alight and said: Well enjoy the rest of your vacation and have a safe journey back to Canada!. I'm not sure, but I think he turned purple there...

Tyler, you need to get hold of a tin of Heinz baked beans, warm them up, make some toast, put plenty of butter on it then put the hot beans on the toast. I then put some more butter on the beans to melt, I think the butter is an important element of beans on toast but no doubt some will disagree! Go on, do it.

Beans on toast is such a staple for us Brits that the very idea that others might think it strange IS strange to us, the two things go together so naturally that you might say, they go together like beans & toast. It probably goes back to the war when food highly rationed, but we're so used to it now that it's a favourite snack option. Chip butties are the same, I saw a Pole fall about laughing at the idea of a french fry sandwich, but you have to remember a British chip is only a distant cousin to a French fry, they are bigger, thicker & deep fried in animal fat traditionally. They make a very satisfying & substantial sandwich.

OK, let's go - I met a very tall girl who told me she often gets asked questions like "what's the weather like up there?". I've met British people who have never been to London, and just like you pointed out about New York., it simply reveals you've got a lot of places to visit when you come over, and not just London (many visitors never get further!!!). I'm a coffee drinker, but I still enjoy an afternoon visit to a tea house with fancy pots and tea cosies. It's an institution AND you can still ask for a pot of really good coffee, if you prefer. You now know about our baked beans - I'm a sportsguy so what I eat must be nutritious as well as delicious. And the places where I go use wholemeal brown bread, sliced from a freshly baked loaf (maybe you've been thinking more about McDonalds!!! ). Did you know that most castles are no longer occupied at all. They're managed by such organisations as the National Trust, so you can visit nearly all of them. Some are hotels where you can stay for a 'spooky night's adventure' - if you dare.!!!!

Beans and Beans on toast as well as porridge, and full english breakfasts have their origins in the need for high carbs or protein at breakfast. This was common for manual labour which traditionally speaking was common through british history, Before meat became readily available and cheap enough for the masses things like beans, bread, potatos and oats were common in the diet. Similarly salting ang vinegaring (pickling ) were common to preserve food before fridges which explains some of the other habits.

The classic question we get in Edinburgh is why we chose to build our castle (which dates back over a thousand years), right next to such a large railway station (which is a mere 178 years old). The football team thing is usually quite innocent, though in Glasgow (where it is socially compulsory to support either Celtic or Rangers) it often conceals a question about your religion as Rangers is very much a Protestant, British Loyalist team and Celtic has its foundations in the Catholic/Irish faith and is supportive of Irish re-unification, etc. Needless to say they absolutely hate each other, too!

The question of meeting royals is not as strange as it may seem. My parents met a range pf royals over the years ( Prince Philip , Princess Margaret , Princess Alexandra, the Queen Mother . Princess Anne etc) as the royals were often guests at the Royal Highland Show ( Scotland's main farming event which Dad was involved with ). Locally Prince Charles ( as he was then in 2007) rescued a mansion house and estate Called Dumfries House, it lies near to a small town that was devastated by pit closures and had plenty of modern problems. Charles has reinvigorated the locality , providing skills training , beautiful free to access grounds and lots of employment . As a result loads of the local people have come in contact with him. Charles was even present at Dumfries House when he got the call from Balmoral on the 8th of September telling him to come at once. Which football team you support is sadly a far too serious question. I can grimly recall reporting of young lad who was stabbed to death in a Glasgow residential area , simply because of the strip he was wearing and he was far from the only tragic example. Of course the overlying cause was the religious sectarianism still extant in central Scotland. I have a recording of a relation born 1907 who was an Essex farmer , with a very strong Essex accent ( despite his father being Scottish ) - you'd not be in any doubt where the Australian accent came from if you could hear him speak.

I don’t drink TEA - I’m not a lover of the stuff and never have been ! Give me a coffee every time ! 5. I love to talk about the weather and will go into it in depth ! 6. I have never been to Australia but I can do an Australian accent; so well in fact that I’ve fooled REAL Australians ! 7. I, personally, have never met the queen BUT my brother has 3 times and my sister has many times too, only because my brother’s company won awards for best exporter of the year three years on the go and because my sister works at the British Museum, so if they were opening new buildings, or putting on special exhibitions, then the Queen was invited to open them and get to speak with those that held high positions within the teams working on them. 8. I live 201 miles from Buckingham Palace in a city called Manchester which is in the North West of England. The only people I know in London are my sister and her husband and children ! 9. Don’t get me talking about Politics ! I was born in England, live in England and speak English but don’t class myself as English but British, because historically, I’m not of thorough English blood ! I have Irish blood from my dad’s & mum’s sides of the family but also French blood from my mum’s side too. And I can also speak French, Polish, BSL (British Sign Language), a little German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Japanese plus can sing in these and a whole host of other languages I can’t even speak !

That London comment works both ways. As a Canadian I lived in Plymouth England in 72 and was constantly asked if I knew people in different cities in Canada. For example someone asked me if I knew someone from Winnipeg and if went there for a drive. Being from Halifax Nova Scotia had to try to explain that Manitoba was 2000 miles away.

The living in a castle thing isn't really that crazy, there are a few castles that are privatly owned and it's easy to find one for sale if you look (and have like a £1 million, they are actually cheaper than equivilant sized mansions) Heck wales alone had over 600 castles and a quick search i found 4 castles for sale between £1.5 and £3.5 million The whole mistaking scotland or wales for england isn't just offensive it's downright dangerous, and I'm not kidding I've seen people get a beating for making that mistake... same with the ROI and NI, 20 years ago calling them the same could get you shot... or worse.. lets just say there's a reason belfast doctors are considered the best at treating complex joint fractures The "who do you support " question is common among british people, a lot of people will actually be surprised if you tell them you're not into football. Besides rugby is much better and during the 5 nations as wales, scotland and Ireland will all agree we don't care who wins as long as we beat england lol I don't drink tea and even i know that the correct way to make it is tea first then milk, doing otherwise results in an awful cup As for british celebrities... i did security work for Charlotte Church and faye tozzer (back 18 years ago this summer) Met danny john jules (cat from red dwarf) at a martial arts seminar. Met kate staples (zodiac from gladiators) when i was a kid And worked for david Attenborough doing environmental conservation (even have a letter from him thanking me for my service)

There are over 145+ castles in United States, with Iolani Palace as the only official royal residence located in the United States and is located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii. The island's last two monarchs lived in it from 1882 to 1893, but later it fell into disrepair until it was renovated and reopened in 1978.

Me and my bf was attending his sisters wedding in Edinburgh and he was wearing an Irish kilt and got asked by some American tourists, on the royal mile, if they could take some photos of him as they "love the Scottish accent and the kilts". I had to walk away, as I was ready to laugh at them, as we are both from near Sunderland. Yes, he spoke to them before they told him that they love Scotland.

Beans on toast is that one comforting, quick, easy, cheap meal you can eat for breakfast, dinner or a light tea if you had a heavy dinner (lunch) and it's ALWAYS enjoyable. And quite good for you especially if you eat it with wholemeal bread, which I prefer anyway. Our beans are different to yours and our bread is more savoury than US bread so it's not how you're imagining.

A very few do live in castles. Near me Lord Say and Sele ( pronounced seeli) still lives in his (very beautiful) castle. The family have done so since 1377! Another family, the Berkeleys, have proven male-line ancestry since before 1066, and have lived in Berkeley Castle for most of that. But there is a technical snag with local authority planning law. Most castles are 'Grade 1- listed', which means you can make very few alterations at all. This makes living in them difficult!

I think beans on toast became popular as an easy cheap meal during the 2nd world war when food was rationed. There are a lot of things on toast as a meal in of itself, also things like corned beef and spam with egg and chips because people grew their own potatoes and had chickens to supply eggs when the food was otherwise hard to come by, and tinned food was the thing.

When I visited California about 20 years ago, I was regularly asked if I knew the Beetles - I mean, PERSONALLY knew the Beetles (it made me wonder if Beetles music had suddenly made a comeback on American TV). As for the baked beans - I've tasted both American and British baked beans, and British baked beans are tastier and healthier by far. British baked beans will go with nearly every fried meal, and they will even make a bland meal edible

American Heinz baked beans have 5x the amount of sugar than British Heinz baked beans. British ones are savoury in a tomato based sauce. Americans are sweet and nay come in a tomato sauce, bbq sauce, or even just corn syrup. Also let’s face it Americans are not known for their love of vegetables. A recent study showed that 10% of Americans had never eaten vegetables at all (fries don’t count). And only 10% of Americans eat the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables. Compared to 30% of the British.

As we all know, the weather is affected by the wind and ocean currents. In the same way as the North Equatorial Current brings severe weather to the Caribbean and the lower states, the Gulf Stream crosses the North Atlantic, and the first place it reaches is Britain. In summer the Gulf Stream evaporates billions of gallons of water vapour into the atmosphere. When it reaches land it rises until it cools and condenses to form the plentiful rainfall that the British Isles receives. Depending on what else is going on in the upper atmosphere we can experience weather normally associated with Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter at practically any time of the year, which is probably why most Brits seem obsessed with it.

In the south of England where I grew up one normally put cheese on toast then beans ontop so the fat of the cheese forms a barrier so the toast doesn’t go soggy but in the north where I live now the beans go on the toast and then the cheese ontop so the beans are cheesy. As for cups of tea, maybe it’s not the same for young people nowadays but for my generation being in my 60’s DONT MESS WITH MY BREW !!!! A cup of tea is as much of life as going to the bathroom. One cannot go s day without a cup of tea.. the story goes that when Britain declared war on Germany not only did the whole population put the kettle on to make a cup of tea, the British government bought the whole supply of tea available on the world market. As for Australian accent vs uk accent in particular I’m originally from east anglia England and often my accent is mistaken for Australian but I can see where they are coming from because the pronunciation humour and mannerisms are quite similar

Just to put you out of you misery, yes most of us would drink tea or coffee every day, lol. But most of us don't put it in a tea pot, that's more when you go out to a café or something. At home we have the kettle plugged into the wall, and just flip the switch to boil it, and pour it straight on the tea bag we've thrown in the cup. Stir it well, and only then add the milk 😆. PJ tips and Tetley are the most common and nicest brands, if you want to try tea that we drink the most. Every time you go to someone's house, you'll get the offer of "do you want a cuppa" which can be either a cup of tea or of coffee. Or they'll say "I'll wack the kettle on" or "fancy a brew?" 😁😁

Responding to the question in the title before watching the vid: Tinned baked beans are an American invention that became popular in the UK around ww2. They were promoted as being a cheap and healthy meal that was filling and easy to prepare and perhaps most of all, they weren't subject to the wartime food rationing that continued into 1950's. The US company Heinz built factories producing them here 🏭 and the rest is history. Heinz theselves claim that one of their executives invented beans on toast in the 1920's but they probably existed as a concept long before then.

There is a story told by one of the police who was personal protection for the Queen. He's walking with the queen in the grounds of Balmoral when they encounter some American tourists. They have a chat and the Americans ask her about where she lives, HMQ says she has a holiday home near by, American then asks, "Have you ever met the Queen?" HMQ says, "no, but he has' and points at her protection officer. Americans then ask him what is she like and they end up taking a group photo. One can only hope that their friends recognised her when shown holiday photos.

Hi Tyler Firstly your reaction was great again you are funny. I must admit I drink about 10 mugs of (yorkshire teabags) a day, it’s must be hot with a drop of milk and 1 sugar. We do love our tea lol. Beans on toast is lovely, you butter the toast and it’s especially lovely with a bit of grated cheese ontop the beans but our beans are different to Americans. I have met now King Charles when I was young on a school trip , he opened an event in my city but it’s nothing to be impressed by as I personally do not like the royal family. It is best though to know where you are in the UK as a Scot or Irish or Welsh would be offended if you call everything London or England. A lot of Brits are a bit reserved and do not like their space invaded. A lot of Brits has visited castles but I personally do not know anyone who lives in one. Hope you get to visit one day as I think you would appreciate the history and castles etc.

So, Tyler, this was very interesting. There were a some things that hit me. You and the video, in different ways marvel at why Americans as these questions. It appears they come across as rude, unfortunately. I might suggest that they spring, often, from the American desire to make quick contact with the people that we meet. We do tend to be loud, and often gregarious. I have an idea to add. I think it is because we are trying to communicate our desire to be closer, and given our shared history, and our bid for independence, it is perpetually kind of awkward until we actually know one another. Why? We view each other as cousins of a sort, just as we do Canada and Australia, in addition to whatever other country our families immigrated from, many of which were part of the British Commonwealth. For many Americans, there is genuine love for England, Ireland and Great Britain, and by extension, the countries of the Commonwealth. Also, Monarchism is not dead in the US. As recent as 2018 a poll by the National Review showed that 11% of Americans would like to see the US become a Constitutional Monarchy. When we consider how many Americans come from Commonwealth Countries, I wouldn't be surprised if those numbers might actually be larger. We don't generally ask the question, or make room for the discussion. Did you know that more than 18 million people each day tune into the Evening Network News? And that another 2 to 2.5 million tune into Cable News. Anyone who watches the news, understands who the Prime Minister, Monarch, how the UK government works in at least broad strokes, and what comprises England, Great Britain, the UK and the Commonwealth is. Sadly, that is only about 20 million out of 331.9 million. This explains the lack of understanding. And here is the most interesting bit of trivia: There are actually 14 Castles in the U.S. www.travelandleisure.com/culture-design/architecture-design/castles-in-the-us Peace

Actually a lot of people have met the Queen or King. Around 30,000 people get invited to Buckingham Palace garden parties every year. Royalty also do many walkabouts and functions meeting and shaking hands with people. In fact the British monarch meets many more people than the US president every year. Also, there's no way you'll ever bump into the US president while out walking but quite a few people have bumped into the Queen while walking, even a few US tourists who didn't even realise she was the Queen. There's a video on KZfaq of the Queen behind the wheel of her car when she drove passed some US tourists who were filming while walking up the drive to one of her homes (maybe Windsor) that was open to the public.
