I'm sure once you enter into the secret world of super high class society you come across all manner of fancy, over-the-top, and down right unnecessary staff on hand, and the Queen of England is probably no exception. I am very interested to react to this video from an American's point of view to see what the UK crown has going on in terms of ridiculous jobs. one of the reasons that stamps are so important to the Brits, is because they invented the whole idea of a postage stamp. They made the first-ever postage stamp and it doesnt have any nation mentioned on it because there was no need to. That condition exists to this day. Their stamps STILL dont have a nation printed on them.

I wonder, when is Tyler getting, that this is not staff of a rich individual. They are not hired and fired for a certain job. These positions are an honour. A lot of the persons who have such a position are not paid - or not paid a lot. They do it, because they serve their queen and their country through it. In the UK people are proud of their monarchy. The monarch is a servant of their people and a lot of people give back in return, doing stuff they know well. They are not selfish - and not after the money. It may be a foreign concept for a person from the United States.

O'm not hahing a pop here, but there's so much that Americans don't seem to understand and get wrong about the British Monarchy and its thousand year history. They'd need to spend a long time over here to take it all in.

I am praying for my fellow Americans to get off of social media, get a passport, and start traveling, or go to school abroad. Save your money by the time you graduate you have money to travel with.

Interesting it was the Americans that bought social media and the likes of youtube to the world so that Brits and the rest of the world can be on here and discuss with the world stuff like this!. In fact the US owns most of the digital economy, do you recognise that? Why don't you do something like Tyler on youtube and talk about the US? Do you not think the history between the US and UK has impacted the education systems in both countries and what is taught in their instititutions? I have spoken to some English people and asked them on the spot do they know every state of the US? Do they know why the US has different state laws? Low and behold they could not name every state of the US and could not explain why there are different states laws.

@@jn715-i3h I think it’s what interests you both at and after school that matters - if you are interested to read history and associated matters. Some people in any country you might care to mention will not be interested and then will be happily ignorant of facts. That is entirely up to them. I am sure I could work through the 50 states given a little thought and I know every President from Washington to Biden with dates which I suggest is somewhat more onerous. I had the pleasure of listening to Alastair Cooke’s ‘Letter from America’ every week on BBC Radio for several decades. An urbane British-born American and supreme communicator who also made the classic 13-part TV history series ‘America’. Commenced by Ronald Reagan I believe. I remember him saying that when the book of the series was published he came over for the UK launch and on the telephone his US born and bred daughter asked him how it was going. “Like a bomb” he replied, to which she replied that she was so sorry to hear it. Of course for ‘going like a bomb’ he had reached into his English vocabulary for rampant success but she heard it as having bombed which I understand is a US term for absolute failure! We seek to understand one another. Tyler does so which I commend but perhaps he has a tendency to take a view that these things don’t happen in the USA so they must be fusty useless relics of the past. I mentioned the Astronomer Royal in an early reply and made the point that he is a man of international standing and repute whereas it might seem fromTyler’s reaction that it is more a matter of HMQ requiring someone with a telescope to be installed in a dusty office in Buckingham Palace in case upon a whim she decides she wants to know something on the subject. To quote an early Bing Crosby lyric ‘T’ain’t so, honey, t’ain’t so!’

The person breaking in shoes is totally overblown in this and other videos I've seen. One of her ladies breaks her shoes in, she doesn't employ someone specifically for that. She is on her feet for huge amounts of time and shouldn't be in pain. When my mum was old I did the same for her.

Breaking in the shoes is what they do when you rent a tux and shoes. Like my son's shoes needed broken in and she put in a wooden like block thing to stretch it out a little. No one put their foot in it though.

The Queen's dresser, Angela Kelly wrote that she sometimes broke in new shoes for the Queen if they were ones she would be wearing to public functions. She is, apparently, the Queen's closest confidant/friend, has worked for her for years, and designs and is in charge of all the Queen's clothes, jewellery etc... It is her job to select and pack everything the queen needs for trips, state functions etc... As well as looking after them on a daily basis She's more like a personal assistant and not a 'wearer in' of her shoes. She is often seen accompanying the Queen at public functions.

It's important to note that most of these appointments aren't proper jobs, they're honorary positions. Like receiving a knighthood or other honours. The people given these appointments are given a title and a chance to perform some stately duties as a recognition for what they've achieved throughout their careers in a particular field. These titles and duties also help them to encourage others to take an interest in their field. For example if an astrophysicist visits a school to encourage kids to take a keener interest in science, that's kind of cool but a bit boring; if that astrophysicist is the Royal Astronomer, a member of the royal household, it demonstrates something more exciting and proves that there are rewards and recognitions out there for people who apply themselves to doing something with their education.

12:45 - If you had listened to the narration, you would have heard that the position in question is "Master of the Queen's Music". "Master of the Playlists" was simply put in as a joke. Of course now, it's Master of the King's Music.

It's an honour for Lord Rees to be selected from all of our excellent astronomers to be given this title. He is a well respected man with an excellent history. He is probably retired now so this isn't his 'job'. He had a career as an astronomer. He is a member of the House of Lords and President of the Royal Society.

@@christineperez7562 Sportsmen who represented our country are sometimes honoured. As are devoted dinner ladies and charity workers. Anyone can be honoured if they seem devoted to a cause. Including footballers.

No, the Queen doesn't get woken up at 9! She gets up at 7.30 every day of her life (including Sundays and holidays) gets a cuppa & goes to work on the Royal Dispatches. She's been Queen for 70 years - so that's 70 years without a lie-in!! (And most of the royal family utterly hates the 9am 'concert' btw!) Most of the swans on the Thames are the property of various organisations and are marked that way. It's only if a cygnet (baby swan) is found without a marking that she takes it in - usually these are orphans. Adult swans without marking are few & far between as you can see by the fact that they are all checked regularly. As for swans being regarded as beautiful & graceful in the USA - I'm pretty certain that every country that has wild swans feels the same. That's exactly the reason they were once served at the Royal Table: so dainty & beautiful that only a monarch could eat them: fit for a King. Or Queen. It's been a part of swan protection for hundreds of years - long before conservation became a thing - to put a royal sanction on killing them. What with all the wars & famines & crop failures, swans on the Thames would probably have gone extinct hundreds of years ago if they didn't have royal protection. The shoe thing was kinda exaggerated. It's no-ones actual job - she'd have to be buying new shoes every week for that! My mother used to use me for this same thing - but the Queen usually asks one of her Ladies in Waiting to do it.

Breaking in Queen's shoes is not a job as such. When she buys new shoes one of her staff wears them for a bit to make them comfortable since she is on her feet a lot of time and needs comfy shoes. Please don't think only to do that, she isn't. Grossly exaggerated.

The woman who does that has a good relationship with the Queen, and helps advise her, when needed, with her clothing. Apparently, the Queen will always wears bright colours, on visits, to make it easy for people, who may have been standing for some time, to be able to pick her out amongst the crowds easier. We all now know what she carries in her handbags too. 😄

I do not think you really understand what a stamp is. It is much much more than a sticker to put on a letter to show you paid for it. They are documents of history and culture. They are documents of connections and small pieces of artwork. There is good reason for philately.

Many of these titles are given to people who are top of their game, just a recognition . Get small renumeration. Bagpipes significant in UK history? Wow can't believe you asked that, they go with the kilt and are significant in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Bagpipes … armies had pipers, still do. They went into battle playing to frighten the bejesus out of the enemy. The Queen’s mother was Scottish but there are Irish, Welsh, English pipers. Bagpipes are quite loud - he walks outside. This piper travels all over the country with the Queen. There are various bagpipes - Northumberland pipes are softer.

Now, don’t start taking the Mickey out of us on the matter of swans or we might have to cite the annual POTUS ceremony of pardoning a turkey, where POTUS has a choice of two turkeys to pardon and picks one. Not only is this ridiculous but there’s no fancy costumes or hundreds of years of tradition involved to make it exciting viewing. You’d think in a land 40 times as big as the UK that you could afford to pardon both turkeys - that’s not including POTUS. The swans - hundreds of years ago, swans and their eggs were a valuable source of food. So, that food needed protecting. Nobles and merchant organisations claimed them by putting marks in their beaks and appointing, “swan masters” to protect, count and mark the swans. Over the years, the monarch took over the ownership of the swans. However, to this day certain merchant groups, like the Vintners, are responsible for swans in certain areas. This is now a ceremonial ownership involving counting and ringing swans every year. Yes, the swan masters have ceremonial boats and uniforms, but a lot of UK customs have such traditions.

Tyler, please put the time in to do proper research - reading Wikipedia and watching a few videos are not proper research. Since Markle invaded the British royal family there are an increasing number of Americans critiquing Britain, the UK, the British monarchy, its history and its place in Britain and the world. They seem to think they're somehow entitled to do so. Yet, when "H" critiqued points of the U.S. constitution Americans were outraged - "How dare he meddle!!!" Don't get me wrong, I think "H" should keep his uneducated opinion to himself. U.S. citizens are the people with the right to judge their system. Just as I think the Americans ridiculing the British constitutional monarchy should keep their uneducated opinions to themselves.Cheers.

King George VI (The Queen's dad) was an avid stamp collector and at tours around City's and Town's etc, any local people who also collect stamps used to bring bits from their collection to show The King and he very much enjoyed seeing/discussing them. Can't say I see the fascination myself but each to their own!

I think you don’t really understand that the title of the job is not necessarily the job that the appointed person does and very often having the title does not bring a great financial reward. Try listening to the explanation throughout without interrupting then you might understand more comprehensibly.

Some things that may interest you : It's not just the swans that Her Majesty owns - since 1324, she also technically claims all the sturgeons, whales, and dolphins in the waters around England and Wales, and if you catch one and want to sell it, as a gesture of loyalty you must make a request to the Queen. And the rule has been put into practice recently, too. In 2004, a Welsh fisherman was investigated by the police after catching a 10-foot sturgeon - but the Palace decreed he could keep it. An acre of English ground at Runnymede was given to the United States of America by the people of Britain in memory of John F. Kennedy, born 29 May 1917, President of the United States, 1961-63, died by an assassin's hand, 22 November 1963. There is an inscribed memorial stone. The Runnymede memorial commemorating the signing of the Magna Carta is nearby.

Wearing in the shoes is not a job. It is done while that person continues her normal role. It's philately and yes everybody knows what it means.

Honorary titles mean they don't get paid, but they can dine out on the title, while other jobs have a small annual stipend. The person on staff doesn't only break in the queen's shoes. The watermen belong to a Guild and are experienced riverman. Some of the clocks are very old and extremely valuable so you need someone who knows what they are doing.

What they don't mention here is that the Queen's stamp collection is valued ay 100 million pounds, so it makes sense to have a guy come in a couple of days a week to look after it. The Queen's grandfather was one of the leading stamp collectors of his day.

The Astronomer Royal is a renowned astronomer who has been appointed to the post because of his proven work . This is the same for other special positions with the Crown. Each is already an expert in their field. The Crown has a massive collection of postage stamps. There are also coins & many other valuable items to conserve & care for.

oddest job? The British Poet Laureate is an honorary position appointed by the monarch of the United Kingdom, currently on the advice of the prime minister. The role does not entail any specific duties, but there is an expectation that the holder will write verse for significant national occasions. The origins of the laureateship date back to 1616 when a pension was provided to Ben Jonson, but the first official holder of the position was John Dryden, appointed in 1668 by Charles II. On the death of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who held the post between November 1850 and October 1892, there was a break of four years as a mark of respect; Tennyson's laureate poems "Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington" and "The Charge of the Light Brigade" were particularly cherished by the Victorian public. There is no 'Master of Playlists' - this was just facetiousness: the title is "Master of the King' Music". Alrhough there are no fixed duties, the holder is expected to compose music to celebrate royal occasions. Former holders have included Elgar, Walford Davies, Bax and Bliss.

The Executive Office of the US President employs just over 2000 people. This excludes the military who staff the Air Force One, or Marine One, the guards at the WH and Camp David and the Executive Building, or the Secret Service and communications staff. So the total is over 6000. The Queen's staff is employed by the Crown, and are effectively civil servants. Only a handful are the Royals' personally appointed staff.

I'm a Brit and I loathe the bagpipes. If someone woke me up at 9am with bagpipes, I'd wrap it around their neck. And the Queen does not own all the swans. It'a myth, it never became a thing.

I was born in Windsor and lived there half of my life. The Castle is even more impressive when seen first hand, also seen all the Royal family up close in Windsor Great Park. Please do a reaction to the Queens Palaces - she has more than just Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle!!!!!

STOP STOPPING THE VIDEO SO MUCH, PEOPLE WILL STOP WATCHING! And you google answers 1second before the video is gonna answer the question. Look at other reaction channels, they stop occasionally and explain their thoughts at the end and maybe ask questions they didn’t understand. You’re entertaining but talk/stop too much and because of that you miss crucial details and ask a question the video has answered 5 seconds previously. Just some vital criticism if you’re gonna succeed!

The tradition of having one's shoes 'broken in' goes back centuries. From all levels of the aristocracy to military officers, plantation owners, and anyone who could afford shoes, people have had others 'break in' their shoes. As stated a few comments before this, Her Majesty, throughout her life has maintained an extraordinary schedule of events each day, almost all requiring Her to stand for various lengths of time. It only makes sense she should want her shoes to be comfortable. For almost three decades, Angela Kelly, The Queen's Personal Assistant, and Dresser has worn The Queen's newly acquired footwear prior to being worn by Her Majesty.

Dude, If I could hire someone to break in my new shoes and jeans I would!! This person cant just do THAT. We all know how the Queen doesnt spend a fortune on clothes. A new pair of shoes every few months? Also remember that the Queen is paying for all this herself. These arent civil servants paid by the government.

The Astronomer Royal, Martin Rees (Lord Rees), is, as have been his fourteen predecessors, a scientist of international reputation and fame. The fact that Tyler hasn’t heard of him is not of much relevance. I dare say there are many US astronomers who are equally a closed book to him. What other qualifications does he need for his job? He is hardly just telescope polisher by appointment to Her Majesty. Mind you, I did once read that an early nineteenth century predecessor was sometimes to be found in the cellars of the Royal Observatory writing ‘Empty’ on empty boxes.

It is hopefully not an American ‘quaint old England that stupidly holds on to old-fashioned things’ I hope!

A philattelist is a stamp collector (German: Briefmarkensammler). Of course I know what that means - classic general education. Never heard of the Red or Blue Mauritius, the most expensive stamps (Briefmarken) of all time? Never heard of the WPU (World Postal Union)? Never collected stamps as a kid because your uncle who was a philatelist himself gave you your first stamps and a collector's album as a headstart? And showed you HOW to collect them according to country, motive or form? Like planes, helicopters, ships, plants, animals, railways, triangular form, countries, territories, colonies, chronologically (German Empire of 1871, Weimar Republic, Third Reich, West Germany, East Germany, Germany after WWII) etc. I'm pretty sure you'll struggle with similar words like cryptozoologist, philantrope/misantrope, spelaeonaut, cosmonaut, taikonaut, oceanograph, ornithologist, numismatician, pathologist, graphologist, theologist, anthropologist, anthroposopher, meteorologist, geriatrist/geritrician, strategist, homoeopath, immunologist... There are countless ones like these out there and one should know at least some...

I get the impression you think us British are a little bit simple, weird, odd and have a strange fascination for upholding ancient traditions and ceremonies as well as “loving” the Queen and the Royal Family… well yes, all of that is true! And guess what, the reasons WHY we uphold all our nutty ways, is because it’s part of our HISTORY! It’s what made us since the year dot…. And having a history and traditions and those ceremonies you seem to be casually mocking is our culture - something that the USA doesn’t seem to have a lot of 🤔🤔 Carry on taking the mick out of GB/the UK with these “Reactions” videos … it’s “water off of lots of ducks and the Queen’s swans backs” - we will carry on just carrying on.. thank you 😉

Windsor has 5 miles of corridors how long would that take to hoover, imagine hoovering 5 mile of highway! I think it's great that these traditional roles are perpetuated! The Royal astronomer is like a regular astrophysicist and just holds the title, and maybe answer any heavenly questions the monarchy have! Tyler, I don't think calling it a choo choo train counts as upscale..lol 😂

01. Please research the position of "CHIEF MOUSER" at Downing Street Nr. Ten (seat of the British Government). It might not be a royal job but I have the highest respect to any individual, past or present, who holds that title. There were times when TWO individuals held that position at the same time...! Apparently rivalries occurred but they could settle their dispute over time. 02. Another honorary mention must go to the Keeper(s) of The Monkeys (don't know if that's the actual title but that's what they do). They've got the most important task of maintaining the health of the only wild-living band of monkeys in Europe. IIRC it's a species of Gibbons otherwise known to be living in Northern Africa only). Legend has it that "The Rock" as Gibraltarenos call their territory will loose its independence if the monkeys ever die out. Gibraltar has about 30.000 inhabitants, is about to enter the Schengen area (like Switzerland who's already a member) and just pledged allegiance (together with Cymru/Wales) to King Charles III. Also they have a very interesting airport which functions like a railroad crossing. The only road to The Rock will lower its barriers, effectly stopping automotive traffic in and out for thirty minutes or so, if planes are starting or landing...! (The runway crosses the road obviously; such a scene is quite a sight).

Black swans here in NZ are not treasured so much as considered pests and are hunted along with other vermin. They can cook up well so that is a plus. In the area that I live in the black swan became such a pest that an annual shoot was arranged for local hunters to thin them out.

"Royal Astronomer ... nah! Not doing anything useful!" Martin Rees, the present Royal Astronomer is one of the most accomplished person in his field. Published over 500 scientific papers and now works on climate change issues. Stop thinking of every position as in terms of dollars and cents. As for the person who breaks in the Queens shoes. Just have some common sense! the Queen spends most of her time standing on her feet meeting people and going places. She needs to be able to put on comfortable shoes. No point in putting on new shoes and breaking them in on some Royal Duty and the next day having crippled feet and being miserable in front of everybody!

I'm Scottish and bagpipes are very loud and harsh. There's nothing I would want to wake up to more. Awful. The queen's mum was Scottish and the Royal family holiday every summer at Balmoral Palace in Scotland.

Breaking the shoes is important because the queen spent a lot of her time walking, standing, parading, etc... Imagine buying new shoes and getting blisters every day... If it was you, you would have hired someone to soften your shoes, wouldn't you? The back-pipe is the Scottish symbol.

Not your best video - you might have commented more intelligently if you had listened to the commentary before speaking. King Charles II founded the Royal Society in the 17thC and its members are the brightest scientists in the country. Located at Greenwich is an observatory and of course the 0 degree longitude line. The Astronomer Royal is a distinguished scientist and a former Master of Trinity College Cambridge. Members of this College with 34 Nobel prize winners is only out ranked by the USA, UK, Germany and France. Being Fifth is is ahead of other nations! Likewise you missed the title of Master of the Queen's Music - the two mentioned Peter Maxwell Davis and Judith Wear contributed compositions at the Queen's funeral service. Usually your comments and questions are spot on and intelligent and I enjoy your posts but this time I was telling you to speak less and listen more carefully!! As you can see, I was a teacher 🙂

The Astronomer Royal is a ceremonial post - once again someone who is appointed from the great and the good of the day. Stop - please stop as it’s annoying - thinking that these people are given the annual salary of a day job whilst not doing anything. I’m hoping that some time soon Dr Brian May will be appointed Astronomer Royal. Then he would be the Queen’s Astronomer Royal from Queen.

There is a festival every Year with lots of Bagpipe Music and other Singers i guess. The Roya Military Tatoo and a Street Festival or something like that.

These jobs, like the master of watermen, are ceremonial, its a way for the queen to fullfill a promis, of a past queen or king, to support a familly that did a service to the crown, like save a past kings life in battle, or some such similar service, and they gave a promis in perpetuity to make sure that familly allways got royal support. you were surprised by life peer, and hereditary peer, a life peer is some one given life peerage to the house of lords, like the supream court in america, but a hereditary peer, is some one who's family was granted peerage, from a king in the past, and when the peer dies, his heir inherits the peerage, old ways die hard, or never :)

They keep an eye on the waterways and the numbers of swans,and they don't have that many staff either for just the Queen, nor does the Queen have someone wearing in her shoes, the person who makes her clothes might wear some of the new shoes a few years ago when the Queen would go on long tours, because they happen to have the same size feet, and quite a few of these jobs are not paid jobs such as lady in waiting etc, and others are just honorary positions

These jobs are hundreds of years old not all paid and some ceremonial . Methinks you don’t understand because your country has yet to establish a long history or traditions. Two or three hundred years old here is quite new.
