It's the fact that the wrong words dont just sound similar to the right words, their is hidden jokes hiding in the wrong words too.. Look up the script.

I'm always stunned by Ronnie's performance in this sketch. His delivery in that stereotypical English bank manager tone is epic. Not a stumble or slip, no right words accidentally slipped in, just the wrong words effortlessly put in the right place.

That takes some doing. I'm fairly articulate but I wouldn't last a minute doing that. The man had a genius mind. But he liked his food and said to David Jason " we can't be funny on an empty stomach " class. Pure class.

It's not just the mispronunciation that makes this sketch brilliant comedy, its the double entendre involved AND Ronnie's ability to deliver it complete dead-pan faced, while everyone in the building must be rolling on the floor with laughing, camera crew and all. He was definitely one of a kind and he wrote the material too. Brilliant man, sadly no longer with us! RIP Ronnie!

Growing up in the 70’s in Australia watching all the British comedy with my Dad, Ronnie Barker was his favourite, especially Open All Hours 😂😂😂👍🏻

Ronnie Barker himself wrote a lot of the Two Ronnies sketches, under the pseudonym "Gerald Wylie". He did this so that Ronnie Corbett and the production team judged them on their merits and didn't just use them because he'd written them. There's a book by him called All I Wrote, which contains the scripts to all the sketches he wrote, including unused variations. His most famous sketch was the legendary Four Candles.

Genius stuff - in case no-one else mentions it, Ronnie Barker wrote these sketches himself under the pen-name of "Gerald Wiley" - he used to submit the scripts anonymously to the producers, and it was many years before he confessed that he was actually "Gerald" (I think it was when they invited "Gerald" to the cast Christmas party!)

Ronnie is an excellent comedy actor. He plays the part of a criminal in prison. The programme is called Porridge and it is a classic comedy, well worth a watch.

I was directed to a Ronnie Barker show a couple weeks back called Clarence from 1988. All 6 episodes are on KZfaq and it co-stars Josephene Tewson [sp?] best known as Elizabeth, Hyacinth Bookay's ever suffering next door neighbor.

Many years after this show had ended he was interviewed and the interviewer mentioned that this particular sketch was a favorite and Ronnie Barker quickly slipped right into character and it was hilarious! He and Ronnie Corbett were truly special and they are missed by all of those who knew them and those of us who had the joy of seeing them work on TV or those who were in the audience.

What so amazing about Ronnie B and these monologues is that he did it in one take on most occasions. When you consider the complexity of each dialogue, it is stunning how good he was. For me, Britain's greatest ever comedy actor.

Stanley Unwin was also a master of the language too. He could just make up words on the spot that sounded like they were right.

The Professor also invented Unwinese as well as being able to think on his feet. This meant Unwinese lent itself to being extended with little or no effort, because it had some sort of set of rules to it. Not sure if it is documented as to those rules, but if it is then it would be fun to resurrect it today. Go hit up wikipedia and read "Stanley Unwin (comedian)". There is some selected reading there which will no doubt amuse. :o)

My father has been in a well known Welsh choir all his adult life and back in the early 80s the choir done a sketch singing as old miners and was so happy that he met the two ronnies and if I heard the story a thousand times lol. Legends of comedy missed by many!

You don't realise how much your brain is working watching this. Your logical side is trying to work out what's right and what's wrong, and working out what to replace the mistakes with so it can make sense of the story. At the same time the creative side of your brain is also registering the mistakes but interpreting them into funny scenarios. Genius. And if you've ever tried deliberately saying a word wrong in a sentence and trying to make it sound natural, imagine how hard it is to recite this sketch without accidentally getting it right. If you noticed, this was filmed in a single take, start to finish

Just loved your reaction! Yes, Ronnie Barker was a complete genius and is sorely missed. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN PORRIDGE???? If you haven't, watch every episode from beginning to end. You will never tire of it - Ronnie B was an amazing and underrated actor. But the script, the casting, the acting - flawless perfection and, IMHO, has never been bettered.

You might appreciate 'Allo 'Allo, it's an old British sitcom set in occupied France during WWII, but there is a lot of clever (and juvenile!) language based humour in that too. It takes the piss out of the British, French, Germans, Italians and probably a lot more besides, in equal measure so it's all fair and good fun 👍

This actually shows - also - the brilliance of not just Ronnie Barker, but the speed of the human mind at amending the 'mispronounced' words, to the contextually correct one, within our own language once we've been hit once or twice by the primer 'Pispronunciation' and then 'worms' instead of 'words'. Professor Stanley Unwin was a master of the art, termed 'Unwinese', who could rattle off incredible 'manglos' as everyday conversation. Although we can be incredibly adept at translating the clever goobledegook that Messrs Barker and Unwin came up with, a moment should be set aside to realize, and appreciate, the absolute geniuses that these gentlemen were!

When my mum moved to England from France in the 70s, she was studying and working, and watched a lot of TV to help her learn English.. She says something clicked on watching the Two Ronnies.. when she laughed out loud , she realised she understood the jokes! Understanding puns and mispronounciation in a foreign language is the ultimate test of our knowledge of that language... She never looked back, she was a true Anglo-file , married an Englishman and here I am as a product of that union (proof that the French and English can live together in perfect harmony .. All thanks to the Two Ronnies 🙏🌈 Haha!

Ronnie Barker loved language and loved to play with language and right at the end of this while he leads everyone in song we see very early use of what we might call these days ‘text speak’ for example we might text c u for ‘see you’. And for many years RB would send the production team ideas for or whole sketches for the show but would use a pseudo-name Gerald Wiley. This name would often appear in the show credits. But nobody (including Ronnie Corbett) ever knew who Gerald Wiley was until the producers eventually said they just had to meet him at which point RB said he knew him and would bring him along to a working lunch. There of course he made the great reveal. This had gone on for some years by this time. And the reason? RB wanted the work to stand on its merit alone and not because he was one of the show’s stars 😊

Ronnie Barker was unreal, I was very young when they were on the TV, my step-father who was a very serious man used to be in tears. Such smart, clever comedy. Something to check out is 'Porridge' which is a sitcom where he is the main character, but you'd need to see an episode rather than just a few minute clip for it to tie in.

Ronnie B wrote under a pseudonym for The Two Ronnies, so his submissions wouldn't be used just because they had his name on them. It was a brilliant way of discovering if they were as funny as he hoped they would be. At the end of filming one series a meal was arranged for the team to meet the previously unseen writer, 'Gerald Wiley', only for Ronnie B to stand up himself & admit the clever ruse to them all.

It's amazing and brilliant these sketches still bring happiness to the world 40 or so years later. Really glad you enjoy them, despite not (presumably) getting all the 70's UK names referenced. As a kid I enjoyed the series of 2 Ronnies sketches "The Worm That Turned", about meek men seeking escape to Wales from a world dominated by women. Very un-pc. Loved this sketch. Comic genius. Wrote to Ronnie B, years after his retirement to an Oxfordshire antique shop. His autographed reply is a much treasured item.

The beauty of The Two Ronnies and Monty Python, and similar across the spectrum is their delivery of what may be 'utter twaddle', and do it in such a serious, convincing and professional way. That cracks me up.

The Two Ronnies, Ronnie Barker especially, were much loved, and highly talented. There is a musical sketch of theirs that I will always remember, but can't find. I hope someone watching this can point me in the right direction. It was of the two of them selling ice cream and shell fish on a beach somewhere, with a song about their wares, which turned into a song about some ladies in old time bathing suits. The only line I can remember is that one of them was "Built like a jetty, and married a Peer".

Possibly his earliest stuff was on the Radio, he was in The Navy Lark, it gets repeated on Radio 4 Extra. On TV he was also in The Frost Report with John Cleese & Ronnie Corbett.
