I'm back with another rugby reaction video in my series about an ignorant American watching sports for the first time.
This video is the Six Nations 2019 match Wales vs. England. We're trying a format of watching several continuous minutes around some key moments in the game. Let me know what you think.
I had a lot of questions in this video, but hopefully clearing up some key rules (e.g., mauls) from this one will help me with future videos.

As an Englishman it's hard for me to like this video but you earned it. Wales vs England (especially at Cardiff) is probably the biggest fixture in the Northern Hemisphere. The Principality Stadium is right in the heart of Cardiff (unlike most other stadiums) so the whole City becomes a rugby arena on match day. Rugby is Wales national sport but England are the bigger nation, plus you get all the historic ancient conflict rising from almost 1000 years of on/off war between the 2 countries dating back to the Anglo Saxons. The UK nations really do love to hate each other but in Rugby there's always SO much respect. You watch a game in mixed seating, rival fans next to each other, drinking beer, applauding good play from both sides and having a laugh and taking the piss with the opposition fans. It's a truly amazing experience. Rugby is a thugs game played by gentlemen. Looking forward to you watching and enjoying the last round of games.

I'm hugely impressed by the speed of your understanding of the game from your early videos until now. As an Englishman living in Wales for 20 years the pressure and enjoyment of these occasions is brilliant regardless of the result. I'm a big American Football fan as well but the brutality and skill of rugby will, for me, never be surpassed. Well done, great reaction posts.

With regards to a maul it is an element of the game where 3 players from each side are in contract with each other whilst the ball is still off the ground. At this point a maul is called and both teams can add members providing the team with the ball is moving forward. The team without the ball cant collapse the maul or come from the sides they have to go through the person at the front and centre of the team with the ball. The team with the ball can add players on the side and can pass between players but have to keep moving forward. The maul is a pretty insane part of rugby and since I only every played at Scum half I only really saw them from the back so I may have missed something but hopefully that helps.

5:57 Yep, 7 did not move away fast enough and slowed down the exit of the ball from the ruck. 8:00 You always have to use your arms when tackling, it's a safety measure. Instead of interrupting the game the ref awards an advatage to Wales which allows more risky plays, such as kicking the ball to the wing. 12:33 Anyone can pick up the ball and run. Usually the scrum half (9) does that, that's his role. 13:59 That's a knock on, but because Wales gets the ball the ref let the game go, instead of interrupting it and award a scrum to Wales. They are playing with an advantage (in the case of a knock on the advantage is shorter. It ends when the ball is kicked, passed or the player gains 5 meters). 17:20 You're right, most of the times those "pick and drive" are made to involve more defensive players and create holes in the defensive line. 90% of the tries are scored because of teamwork, rather than individual actions. It's like an iceberg, you see just what is above the water, but most of it is below. 19:14 In this case it's not a mistake. In a 4 v 2 moving the ball near the sideline would be risky. 22:05 No. In case of an injury the game keeps going, the ref can stop it if the injury is serious, or if the injured player is in a dangerous position (near the action). I'm not 100% sure what happend here. In my opinion Wales lost briefly possession of the ball but both teams weren't able to play it because it was still contended. That's called a "turnover". The ref awards a scrum against the team that had the ball (here Wales lost it, England gained, ball is contended, none can play it, scrum for Wales). 23:30 England scrum didn't hold its position. Rotating the scrum, not pushing straight, collapsing the front row is a foul play. There are many rules about scrums. 25:00 Yep, you're right!
@davidheard3964
@davidheard3964 5 жыл бұрын
22:05 - My interpretation is that England never secured the turnover. It all looked to be a part of the same Ruck, and unlike a Maul if it becomes unplayable in a Ruck it is a Scrum to the attacking team. That's why getting to ground in a tackle is so important - if you get to ground and it becomes unplayable, your team keeps possession. FYI all restarts for injuries if required is a Scrum to whomever had the ball last.

Ref does not always go back, If you make significant territory away from the penatly (usually like 20-30m) and you still have CHANCE of breaking through he will call advantage over. Otherwise the game slows down too much. But it is ref dependent, some refs allow more leeway then others when it comes to advantage.

@@catherineandpaulfuters2523 Advantage time period is often very subjective and depends on the ref and the area of the field where that individual play is taking place. It can be frustrating for the fans and players but as long as there is consistency from the ref on the day then that's the best we can hope for. Who would want to be a referee, seriously. As long as a maul maintains forward momentum they can continue holding the ball in. Opponents must enter the maul from the back, not the side of the maul.
@juice_km01
@juice_km01 5 жыл бұрын
Just to add on to bengutsell. “The back of the maul” is from your side of the field. If it wasn’t clear. How mauls are determined is if a player takes it into contact but doesn’t go down to the ground that is a maul (ref will determine it most of the time) The team that took the ball into that contact has the responsibility to get the ball to the back. If they can’t then the ball is turned over and a scrum will be called the feed will go to the opposition. Back to bengutsell point about forward momentum in relation to the maul.If that maul stalls you the team has the opportunity to try and gain momentum again, but the ref will determine how long they have (general no more than 5 seconds) once that time is lapsed the ref will instruct the half back (no9) to “use it or lose it” meaning get it out of there ASAP Rocky. Also those kicks that the (no9-scrum half ) makes from the back of the ruck are referred to as “box” kicks they are used either to relieve pressure to apply pressure depending on team systems. There’s are general saying in rugby a kick is only as good as the chase.

You’re not so ignorant, mate, cracking job! Scrums have been ruined by the Health & Safety mob, they are now too soft. In the past the two halves of the scrum would crash together, not gently kiss as they do now and there would be more aggressive pushing. Of course there are less serious injuries now, and that is as it should be. Rugby players are in a class if there own. When you see a footballer screaming in agony and rolling about, just because an opponent tackled him, it just shows what soft babies they are compared to real men, Rugby players! Cheers, from England.

Only just found your channel but I am excited to watch more! I hope I can help with some of the scrum calls. Its tough for a ref to call with 100% accuracy who the offending team is when a scrum needs to be reset (why its often reset a few times before a penalty is called) as he can only see one side, but normally it comes down to the scrum being unstable and therefore unsafe. Also normally one of the props buckles and causes the scrum to collapse which can result in a penalty for the other team.
@handsolo1209
@handsolo1209 5 жыл бұрын
In a maul, you must enter from behind the furthest back foot of your teammate already in the maul. You must come in to the maul from a central line and not from the side. Side entry is a penalty. Once the maul is formed, the attackers must be moving forwards. If the momentum is stopped 2 times, they must play the ball out of the ruck otherwise they lose the maul and the other team gets to put in at the resulting scrum. Once the maul is formed, the defending players can stay where they are, so you'll sometimes see an opponent standing backwards in the middle of the maul. You can "swim" through the maul to get to the other side and tackle the ball carrier. You must enter the maul legally to do this and move through the middle. If a defender deliberately collapses the maul by falling to the ground and the other team trips over him it will be a penalty. If the attacking team detaches from the players in front and then re-attach (notice there are blockers and the ball is at the back of the maul) then it is a penalty to the other team.

A thoughtful video that poses some excellent questions. With regard to the incident at 19 minutes: No, I don't believe it is a mistake. As you allude to, Red 14 (North) makes his decision to hold onto possession and adjust his line inwards a fraction of a second before your freeze-frame, when White 15 (Daly) is still uncommitted to tackling him and free to tackle Red 12 (Parkes). Parkes is on the wing in this play but he is a centre, not a winger. He's in the team on the basis of his strength and game intelligence, but he's not a particularly strong finisher. In a 1-on-1 the smart money is on Daly to make the tackle on Parkes. If that happens, North can't be sure that he'll be able to help; he may be tackled in the act of passing, or impeded some other way that prevents him reaching the next breakdown in time. Should he fail to do so - with no other teammates nearby - Parkes will be forced to either relinquish possession, or concede a penalty. On the other hand, North knows that if he takes the ball into a tackle himself, Parkes will still be on his feet and free, with a good chance of forming a ruck and securing the ball for the next phase. The English defence is still stretched following the quick move from left to right effected by the long pass from Red 10 (Biggar) so North gambles that it will not have fully re-aligned even after one more phase. This is exactly what happens and Wales score off the next phase, full justifying North's decision. It is a decision indicative of Wales' low-risk, conservative mindset; trusting that they will be able to deliver one more phase, and waiting for a better opportunity. In this instance, Wales score off the 34th phase; a remarkable number. Given the dominance of modern defences, to go that many phases without making an error is hugely impressive. In the next game, they scored another try off 20+ phases. It's a cornerstone of their style.

Good explanation. That is why getting to a ruck, not a maul is important. If this was called a maul, then England would have had the put-in at the scrum. Rucks and mauls in open play often look like the same disorganised heap of bodies, but the key point of difference is the player in possession making it to ground. Once they have a knee down, or the ball is on the ground, and another player not their feet comes into contact with the tackled player and/or tackler, then a ruck is formed. This sets up an offside line, plus lots of other intricacies in terms of who can do what. If the ball is stuck in a ruck, the team going forward (usually attackers) get the put-in at the scrum. With a maul, if the ball is stuck, the team not in possession gets the put-in.

Last few minutes, England weren’t driving straight in the scrum which led to the scrum turning so the ref rewarded an advantage. An advantage allows the play to continue as the right team have the ball, however, they have a chance to play it risky and if they mess up and lose the ball they can try again from the location of where the incident occurred. Advantages only last for a certain amount of time so that they don’t have the ball for 10 mins and then they mess up and have to go all the way back.

13:16 yes anyone can pick the ball up from the back of a ruck. They can either kick the ball out the back of the ruck (normally if they are trying to get away from there own try line. You can pick the ball up out of a ruck and run with the ball(a pick and go). Finally you can pass it out of the back of the ruck usually to spread the ball wide.

Wales V England clip - Cory Hill TRY. You ask if it was a mistake for the No14 not to pass the ball to No12? No. He did the right thing. Look to the back field. You can see defenders coming in to cover the first defenders. If he had passed the ball the No12 would have been isolated and possibly pushed into touch. By going in alone, the No14 had the No12 at hand to help cover the ball and form a ruck protecting the ball from the defenders as the No14 had set the ball back (recycling the ball). If you then watch on, the English defenders had to run from one side of the field to the other. This has to be done quickly but but you must keep your shape and reduce the gaps. The English defenders came too far creating a space which the Welsh No 4 exploited by crashing in at an angle (against the natural angle of the defenders) and his momentum carried him over to score. This was a long, patient and skillful series of plays from the Welsh which had drawn a penalty from the English (playing advantage) so if the welsh had not scored a try, the referee would have called the play back for a kickable penalty (field goal). The "pick and drive" tactic is designed to "suck" defenders in so that the attackers can exploit space out wide. One notable point in this passage of play concerns the No 15, Liam Williams. He was tackled by his opponent but not held. When tackled, you have to "offload" to a teammate or set up a ruck. He was isolated on his own with no immediate support. What he did was very clever. He placed the ball on the ground. Took his hands away (released the ball in the tackle) but then picked it up again to move forward where he was again tackled bu this time had support so another ruck was formed and another phase started. This was a tremendous series of phases that the Welsh went through and it is a very hard thing to achieve as so many mistakes from handling errors, ball placement in the tackle, good defence or interceptions can occur. Loved watching this!

You made some great comments and I'm glad you enjoyed our national sport. You asked why the winger didn't pass to his outside. You thought that might be to ensure the ball wasn't't lost, which is a great call. Much more difficult to defend when you have to run round the ruck to come back onside. Other problem was George had the ball under his right arm so he could fend off first tackle with his left hand making the pass very difficult to the outside with England player in position to make a possible tackle or interception. A scrum is called a scrum because the words “assault” and “battery” were already taken....the main things you look for in a scrum are constant binding of the props on each other and straight body/push towards the opposition....if a prop puts his hand on the ground he is penalised for dropping the bind and illegal support. The last penalty advantage given by The ref when Wales scored the last try is because the England loose head doesn’t adjust his body as Wales scrum drives forward and to the left....the English prop ends up pushing sideways and drops his bind.....the referee indicates advantage to Wales as they had the ball....knowing you have penalty advantage, teams usually try a high risk move as if they lose the ball they will get a penalty anyway

At 23:27, is penalty advantage to Wales from illegal scummaging from the #17 english front rower (tight-head prop). You can see that at some point, the scrum starts rolling to the left side, and that is because the english front rower "explodes". That is, that the english front rower loses his binding to the scrum and gets "stand up". So, that is where the advantage comes from, and as it is an illegal scrummaging offense, its punished with a penalty. So, from there, Wales has the chance to play the advantage and try to score via a try or a drop goal, or if the advantage goes to nowhere, they have the chance either to kick at goal, kick to touch for playing a line out, play a new scrum, play a quick tap (little kick touch from the guy having the ball on his hands to himself and continue playing) or resume play with a tap (little kick touch to the ball in the ground and continue playing with a set play). In all penalty game resume options but the scrum, the english team must retract 10 meters away from the ball before it goes in play, or if they are to close to their in-goal line, they must retract behind the in-goal line, or if the play resumes too quick for them to retract 10 meters, they cannot play the welsh carrier until they got defensively in-side.

It's actually quite impressive Wales are still one of the best nations. We say it's their national sport but in reality this is only in South Wales and even there it vies with Football 50/50. Wales club teams at the same time have disbanded or merged and become weaker. Whilst at the same time the club structure in England has improved and Rugby has become more popular in general in England and significantly outside the traditional public school environment. Nowadays England should be by far the strongest nation just down to the massive pool of players but somehow Wales keep notching up championships and grand slams.

The ‘Pick & Go’ is often used to recycle players buried at the bottom of the ruck. So for example, if the numbers are on for going wide but the scrum-half is in the ruck, we’ll pick and go to recycle him out for the next phase. Another example would be if the kicker ‘fly-half’ is in the ruck but you’re within drop-goal range, you’ll need a pick & go to get him set. The greatest example of these is the very final moments of the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final. We (England) needed Jonny Wilkinson to score a drop-goal but we were too far out. Matt Dawson (scrum-half) picked and went to gain territory but now was at the bottom of the ruck. So the forwards went again to recycle Dawson because he’s the best player to pass to Jonny. Jonny hit that drop-goal off his NON-DOMINANT foot in the final of the RWC! 😍

15:55 that's exactly what Wales are doing, forcing England to commit numbers to constant Welsh runners who just pick and go. It opens up gaps in the defensive line eventually, either like the Bledisloe New Zealand try out wide or like the English try earlier in this game where the pillars (players guarding by the ruck) aren't switched on. So just in general you have to be on your feet to play rugby, so yes when you've been tackled you can't crawl forwards forever. But what you do get is one movement forward before presenting the ball back to your team. So that can be one roll, or one movement to stretch out and score the try either figuratively before presenting backwards, or literally placing the ball over the line. In the case at the end the player hadn't been tackled, but you still can't just randomly play the ball on the ground. I'd say he was in the process of standing up and dived over the line. The distinction about whether the player has been tackled or not is the player has to release the ball if they've been tackled, but can just stand up holding the ball and continue if they haven't been tackled. Usually releasing means presenting the ball back to your team and the scrum half passes it away, but you can release the ball, stand up and then pick up the ball and continue forwards. Not usually seen in 15s but more commonly seen in 7s. Japan made great use of it in the 2019 World Cup.

Imagine a line drawn perpendicularly through the ball from touch line to touch line - this defines the offside line. So, if you pass forward, you are passing to a player who is 'offside'. For a lineout, the line is between the lines of players in the lineout and the 'backs' must be 10 metres from this imaginary line. At a lineout, the backs who are attacking, they line up at a 45 degree angle so they give themselves more running space. The defending backs will line up flat along this 10 metre line to reduce the running space. For a scrum, maul and ruck, the back foot of the scrum, maul and ruck defines the offside line. When the ball is kicked forward, the offside line is define by the kicker of the ball and when he runs forward, the offside line advances with him - although a player or players who was behind the ball when it was kicked, they are onside and they can run forward to put their players back onside - the attacking team players who are in front of the player who kicked the ball forward, they are meant to run back to put themselves onside. This is, in my opinion, a better way of understanding what is going on in the game. This imaginary line tells why coming in from the side of a ruck or maul is offside - you must come into the maul and ruck from an onside position (the back foot thingy).

BuddherNugget's Gaming he had ball in one hand which automatically draws players in because it technically means you’re not offloading. North is also a battering ram! Issue with passing would be, being tackled out of play as well as no back up players to ruck over. He was right to not pass. Parks (who I think was on the wing) didn’t have the speed to run into the balls, he would’ve been potentially tackled by manu coming across with speed. North also took three players out of play. Either way, not an issue because the turn out was what we wanted!

I’m impressed by how much we have picked up about Rugby in the limited time you have been watching it. To try to cover a couple of your questions: when the referee calls a penalty advantage you do have a play to nothing situation, where if you try something and it doesn’t work you get to come back from the penalty. (Win Win situation). At the 26 min mark in your video you ask whether George North is making a mistake taking on multiple defenders: Looking at it he doesn’t have a lot of choice in that moment, and as a player George is a big winger in the Jonah Lomu mould (He’s the size of a flanker with the outright speed of a winger). The play at this point would be to possible commit two of three defenders to stop him, allowing him to off load to a player outside that is now unmarked and free to score.

Impressive understanding of the game from just watching a highlights reel and listening to commentary. Some of the nuances of the game keep us interested after a lifetime of watching and playing.. it’s an awesome sport. You had lots of good questions - I’ll answer just one. A maul is formed when a tackled player doesn’t go to ground, but instead a unit is formed to drive forward. In modern rugby this is most often off the back of a line-out. The referee will call a mall at which point neither team is allowed to pull the mall down, and it must keep moving in one direction or another. If the mall is pulled down a scrum will be awarded to the innocent team, or if it stops making progress in either direction the referee will call “use it” and the team in possession must either resume making progress or move the ball out of the mall. The defending team can try to steal the ball by “ripping it” from the the player in possession or driving the mall backwards forcing the attacking team to go to ground and give up possession. That’s probably an imperfect and incomplete explanation, but off the top of my head it covers most bases. Keep enjoying the games! Was a cracking 6N!
