I'm back with another rugby reaction video in my series about an ignorant American watching sports for the first time.
For this video we're watching Faf De Klerk The Giant Slayer, which is aptly named because this dude destroys! I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. If so, please like and subscribe.
Thanks to DB Physique and others for the recommendation, and to CroseyCompsRugby for putting the original video together.

That's another reason why the scrum should not turn or you will allow the scrum half to get that close... but guessing Faf will just time it so he's mid air over the scrum as the opostion picks up the ball to make a clean tackle.

The thing with Rugby which De Klerk shows so well is that it's not all about being the biggest or strongest guy on the field. Although size and strength are undeniably advantageous, there's an understanding of timing and leverage that's essential to the game and he's a master of that. Time and time again you see him put himself in the right place at the right time and use his opponent's own weight and speed to bring them down. Absolute masterclass.

Yo this is great! You picked up nearly everything. Faf de Klerk is really good for a few reasons which you picked up. 1) Fantastic knowledge of the game and judgement. He consistently makes good decisions. He's got a good rugby brain 2) Great anticipation and timing. He manages to time his runs to perfection so that he's onside but he still manages to get into places people aren't expecting him and he makes tackles and forces errors 3) He's super tenacious and relentless in his defence and ball carrying 4) he's super fast - particularly in comparison to most forwards which basically enhances all the other qualities of his 5) fantastic handling. Scrum halfs are almost always the best passers on the field but this guy can catch too. It's absolutely obscene how much power he seems to pack as an 80kg (175lb) player. He's consistently tackling dudes who are 110-130kg (240-285lbs) and sometimes driving them back. That's all technique and tenacity. Knowing how much people lie about their weight in rugby too I bet he isn't even as heavy as he says. He's probably 77-79kg and he's claiming 80 because it sounds better. The "fake pass" is called a dummy. You can say "he threw a dummy" and if you get fooled by a dummy pass people say you "bought" or "were sold" a dummy. It's hard to sell people dummies at high level because it's like the oldest trick in the book - but occasionally they do still work.

Ill try and explain the offside scrum situation... When theres a scrum being packed down, the two scrum-halfs(number9) stand to the side of the scrum and the attacking teams scrum-half rolls the ball into the middle of the scrum. This is where it gets tricky to explain.. the hooker (the guy right in the middle/front of the scrum) number 2 on his back. 'Hooks' the ball back with his foot to the guy at the back of the scrum (number 8). The defensive scrum-half has to stay behind the ball while the ball is in the scrum (the rest of the defensive backline 10-15 have to stay 10meters behind the srcum) but as soon as the number8 picks it up (or the attacking scrum-half) the defensive scrum-half can tackle them and go for the ball. So its all about tracking where the ball is in the scrum and great timing. Loving the rugby vids keep it up bro!

The ball must be in front of his feet at all times until it exits the scrum(so he must remain behind the ball) but as you ask around 8.oo mark we also see that the eighth man(the last man in the scrum is breaking his bind from the scrum and you can see Faf DeKlerk indicating to the ref when he points, first to the ball on the ground and then to the fact that the eighth man is coming loose from the scrum. This makes the eight man fair game because he is not part of the scrum anymore, the ball is "free" and therefore Faf can't be judged offside. However it is a very close call indeed and one could suspect that if FaF was not communicating with the Ref before he made his move that he may very well have been called for off-side. Faf has mastered this part of the game, both in his timing and also very much in his understanding of the rules pertaining to the scrum and the position he plays.

Seriously impressed by how quick you pick up the game and its quirks. I find your analysis is really sound and great critical thinking! It's a pleasure to have someone like you looking at the game we love with this mindset! Really enjoying your videos so please keep them up! If you want to see some more sensationalist type videos about the sports brutality (which a lot of people think because of the wrapping and lack of padding NFL hits are harder) you should look at a rugby big hits compilation which will blow your mind because now you know (as you mention relentless), the game doesn't stop after a hit, but you get up and go again and again and again! :) Faf De Klerk would walk on to literally any team in the world as he is a phenom with the attitude of a spartan. PS: Got to look up Jonah Lomu (RIP), probably the world's best natural rugby player of all time (got chased by the NFL for a while too!) Brian O'Driscoll for talent and Jonny Wilkinson for sheer will and performance under pressure. Rugby Commandment #7 - Thou shall not run into Jonny's shoulders, else you'll get fucked. Great videos Dan, just watched them all this evening. It's really great to see Rugby exposed to a wider audience and these vids on KZfaq certainly assist with that. One aspect of your content that is clear: You're obviously interested in learning the technical aspects, for example big-hits are an excellent aspect of the game, but many are illegal hits, so understanding that arms need to wrap, and tips (tilt a player over the horizontal) are illegal . Likewise quick defence is a huge part of Rugby, however it takes an extra special player to push the rules but not cross them. Perhaps consider reducing your inset as it does sometimes cover the action, especially with plays that involve passing (pitch? haha) laterally to the right Sub'd!

Both seriously close games and could have gone either way. Feeling much more positive about the Bok this year. Hoping for a good showing in the World Cup. I doubt we will win it but losing a closely contested semi or final would be heatbreaking but at least make me feel like we're competitive again.

It's the final week of the six nations this weekend, these games would be a great place to start. The Wales v Ireland game will be incredible and will determine whether Wales get the grand slam, however if Wales lose England need to win against Scotland to win the cup, gonna be a great day of rugby!

Yes agreed! This Saturday is called “super saturday” the final 3 games, between 6 teams with 3 in the running to take the crown! Wales win means they come 1st, if they lose, then either Ireland or England can win depending on the England/Scotland game! This weekend will be a real showcase of rugby - id definitely suggest watching them if you can!

In what sport thou? I agree NFL players won't be able to go up against rugby players in rugby but rugby players struggle to go against NFL players as well. The two sports breed two different types of players. Rugby players have more endurance and the team has an overall all-round better skill with the ball, where NFL players depending on their position are great at that skill that their position is meant for. Wide receivers, for instance, are good at running their routes and catching whereas a quarterback is only good at throwing the ball and in rare occurrences such as Lamar Jackson(QB) is good at throwing the ball and at running the ball which is generally reserved for running backs. NFL players again depending on their position they players are more explosive and better on their feet (agile) as their main goal is to try not to get tackled so they have to be faster and great at bouncing(trucking) players or stepping(juking). What rugby players will struggle with when integrating into the sport is memorizing all the different plays and routes etc. A QB goes onto the filed knowing 75-100 pass plays per game, the rest of that team also needs to know those plays off by heart or their offense will break down. Running backs need to know 15 - 20 different runs per game as well and so the offensive line also needs to know how to block according to that play. Two totally different sports and two totally different types of players. Can't compare them

This is really awesome stuff my dude, you have a really keen eye for sports. It’s not exactly the same, but I recommend catching the next Sevens World Series event. Sevens is a variation of rugby where they play 7 a side but on a full sized field, for two 7 minute halves. Otherwise the rules are the same. The athleticism and fitness required for this is absolutely insane. It’s an Olympic sport now. Tournaments take place in different cities in the world. Each tournament is played over 2-3 days, with teams playing a few games a day. I would recommend watching full games over highlights, because a highlight reel basically resembles a series of 100m sprints, but a full game is 14min of everything rugby has to offer. You’d probably also enjoy that the USA is an incredibly strong team - they’re currently on top of the World Series table. Check out this video of USA sevens captain Danny Barrett breaking his arm in a tackle against South Africa, then immediately getting up to make another tackle with his other arm. Then a few seconds later, he abandons the medical attention he is receiving to go clean out a ruck, leading to a USA try. Absolute beast. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gbeRjd2L1am4qnU.html

True but his tackle was illegal and he should have been carded. :-) I am laughing because I am just restarting an argument from another KZfaq video which showed the highlights of the game. I made that comment which made a lot of people upset but I got lots of support too. If you re-watch it his tackle is high and reckless too, he should have been carded for it. Can't deny his commitment though, he is a very very tough and talented player.

Growing up I was 100% football (soccer) & still am. These videos have actually piqued my interest as you're in the same position of being a complete newcomer to the sport. I've probably learned as much from a few videos as I have in my last 41yrs on the planet lol I'd heard of De Klerk but never seen him play. The bloke is a force of nature. I saw a comment here calling him a Honey Badger. Great comparison! This may actually be the start of something here. It would be nice to get more involved on rugby days. There're people here who will explain the rules better than I, I'm certain (that little feint pass you mention, is called a 'Dummy', as in dummy (fake) pass) so I'll leave that to them. What I wanted to say is... Most Americans seem to mainly react to the 'Greatest ankle shatterers' or 'The best punch-ups (a UK term for a fight/fighting)' etc. It's so refreshing & simply great to see one of our trans-Atlantic cousins really take the time to learn about the game & love it with so much curious & willing energy. Not only that, you've very personable & a great representative of your country (that said, you might be a closet axe murderer ;)). We see too much negative news about the 'States, the shootings, Police violence, the politics & angry people there on our TV's, you're a welcome relief. I look forward to yr next foray into rugby (you might try a whole game, just for yr pleasure, from here on youtube. We're currently in the midst of the Northern Hemisphere's greatest Rugby International yearly tournament (the 6 Nations; being England, Ireland, Italy, France, Scotland & Wales) & I'm sure some of the matches will be available here (try Wales v France or England) I am convinced it'd do your understanding no end of good, & most, that you'd enjoy it very much). You want to see a small guy doing big things on the rugby field have a look at Damien Mckenzie. He’s the definition of size doesn’t matter in rugby. Guy is fearless. Also, I’m enjoying how you’ve become a student of the game and have learnt a lot in a short space of time. Goes to show you’re genuinely interested in the sport and how it works. You should consider coaching it over there. If you decide to learn about it more. Oh and by the way there is a competition in the US now. It’s call the MLR, major league rugby. So the sports growing over there also.
@Martin-pb7ts

I agree Damian McKenzie is fearless but unfortunately he just makes way too many mistakes to be considered in the same league as the top guys. The amount of intercept tries he gives up must be a real cause for concern and that's not even counting the amount of times he passes to the Invisible Man.
@WiTRoOner
@WiTRoOner 5 жыл бұрын
Martin Coetzee that’s a fair point. However, it should be noted that these mistakes are as a result of him being put in the number 10 position. He has by in large played as a fullback (number 15) where he has more space to move and make decisions. The fact that the All Blacks (arguably the best team) are willing to develop him as a number 10, suggests they understand that he will make mistakes but ultimately will help him develop his understanding of the position. Generally, the all blacks only bring in established number 10s. Quiet rare to have players brought in who are not an established 10 to be developed in that position - at that level of rugby. Goes to show how much talent he has
@Martin-pb7ts
@Martin-pb7ts 5 жыл бұрын
@@WiTRoOner I agree, I also think that they tried to establish him as a 10 and know they failed. I doubt he will feature a lot more in the future. When you have players like Barrett and Mounga and a few others I don't think you need him to be honest. I think they might play him as an impact player against the smaller nations but I would be very surprised if they continue with him as a front runner, the All Black selectors are a lot smarter than me. In the past the ABs had such a clear advantage they were spoiled enough to be able to take risks like that. Ireland and England are looking menacing for the World Cup, Australia will be better by then and the Boks are looking like they have new energy. That's not even mentioning Wales and France which could be dark horses in the tournament. I just don't think they can gamble with that. Having said that the All Blacks will throw the Rugby Championship this year like they have every World Cup year since 2011 so they might play him there to keep players like Barrett and Mounga rested and fresh. Sorry I typed too much! :-)

@Ignorant American. Really excellent video bud, really enjoyed thank you! Faf is a truly special player, his strength to weight ratio is off the charts! In terms of the scrum question you had, in theory he is just about correct there.. he has played the offside line at the scrum right to the line.. another ref on another day might have blown him for offside but personally I think he was fine. It's a little grey and open to interpretation. His rash value is tremendous and he really unsettles other players. He was instrumental in the Boks winning the recent world cup.. he has his detractors but for the life of me, I don't understand why.. he adds insane value to any team even if he does give away some penalties from pushing the offside line a little too much and making some ineffective box kicks. I love Faf. Great player and great man!
