That headgear isn't a helmet, it's mostly worn by forward players but it's basically just a thin piece of padding that doesn't mean much. I used it just to keep me from getting cauliflower ears.

Yeah isn't it weird that in rugby you have to touch the ball down to score a try, but in the NFL you don't have to touch the ball down, to score a touch down! Ahh well, Americans for ya.

The headpiece is what's known as a 'Scrum Cap', it's purpose is just to protect the wearer from scrapes, cuts on their heads, as well as their ears from accidentally getting torn off while they're in a Scrum or Maul. You'll probably ask, so I'll preempt just in case; a Scrum is a method of restarting play after an infraction, this is where players from both teams will bind together in a sort of pushing play to gain possession of the ball that is passed under the group. A Maul is similar to the Scrum, but sometimes happens when the player carrying the ball gets tackled though remains standing, players from both teams will form up and try to push the ball carrier up or down the field depending on the teams direction, after a moment or so the ball carrier will pass possession of the ball to his teammate behind the Maul and normal play will continue on.

Concussions are MORE likely with helmets worn than without. Also rugby players don't deliberately collide head-on as NFL players do.

Great vid, bro Just a note, bro there are many different forms of Rugby, the main two are Rugby Union & Rugby League, I played both for 26 yrs & absolutely loved it & forged a lot of lifelong friendships with guys I played with & against, there's nothing better than smashing each other for 80mins than going back to the clubrooms of whoever's hosting & having a few beers & laughs with the guys you attempted to annihilate cause all the animosities left out on the field & that's from the pros down to amature levels, it really does bring people together from all walks of life, hope it really catches on in the U.S.

Played rugby for 15 years until a non rugby related injury prevented me from playing. I cracked my cheekbone, broken finger, broken and dislocated collarbone, teeth knocked out (forgot my gum shield, 'stupid'). The only injury i had to come off for was the collarbone, didnt realise id broken it for about 20 mins and ended up popping the whole collarbone out of place as i was 2nd row forward (the big tall guys in the scrum) so had a lot of pressure on my upper torso. Its possibly the most fun sport in the world to play. Pads woukd ruin the game, in rugby you are taught how to tackle properly because there is very little room for error. In rugby you tackle as hard as you are able to take a tackle. Musckes skill and speed are the only padding in rugby.

They’d be in heaven if they had padding? I’m American and hate to break it to you, but it has to be said: PADDING IS A HINDRANCE. It is because it doesn’t teach the player how to properly make a tackle. If you notice good legal hits and tackles in rugby, a tackle happens between the shoulders and the knees. Because of the padding in the NFL, players are too careless, grab above the shoulder, or lean in with their head to make the tackle, assuming that the padding will protect them. That is where they are wrong, need to learn how to tackle properly, keep the tackle between the shoulders and knees, and then they wouldn’t need padding. The AFL (Australian Rules Football) also doesn’t use padding and has less injuries than the NFL. You should have a look at that as well.

I never thought about it that way. You are right it does give the person a false sense of safety.

One complaint I have with Die Hard Rugby is that they include illegal hits. Some of the highlights in this video were red card offenses. Making head contact as a tackler is a cardinal sin in rugby Watch Andrew Forde/GG Rugby compilations, they're both much better

No mate your numbers are way off. Here in powys in Mid Wales over the last 30 yrs I know of 4 people that have broken there necks that has led to full paralasys including 1 lad I was in school with. And powys is the least polulated part of Wales and also the least rugby orientated. 7 clubs for a population of 100K population these of course are in the lower divisions so never get reported outside of the local news papers, it may make the evening news. but higher league players and internationals Gwyn Jones Wales openside in 97, mathew parry , owen williams, Ben Lloyd. not all breaks result in the same amount of damage, the trauma can be temporay or permanent, and just because you break the verterbre, it doesnt necessarily follow that it will sever the spinal nerves. but it is relatively common when you look at all players, not just the top flight. 1 or more a season here in Wales alone

How many injuries? Nowhere near as many as you think. I'm a 'small guy' that played for some 3 decades at a rate of around 30 matches a year. My injuries consisted of 1 separated shoulder, broken/cracked ribs 3 times, 1 broken leg (shin on shin contact) . Other than basic cuts and bruises, that's it. Not much. I never saw anyone injure a knee that wasn't already damaged by playing American Football. At 73 I am the fittest and healthiest person that I know anywhere near my age group.

Ok, So the pole gaurds, or protectors or what have you.... I have a sory. I was captain of my team in high school, under 15's (Meaning you turned 15 that year). My team, and I, screwed up, right from the kick-off, and out of frustration, I swang a fist at the pole gaurd, cussion thing... Only to find out it was just an empty cover. I mashed my fist against the iron pole, and today I'm left handed.

I used to play rugby for the schools and loved it up until 13-14 I even played for the county then it changed and players started punching and stamping it happened to me several times and it just wasn't sport at that point getting sucker punched to the face or someone stamps on you with full studs I always knew rugby was tough and I can stand up to a tackle and do my fair share in a maul but stamping and punching was my last straw and it lost my sense of fair play so i just quit

@@darkzim3872 Yeh It was tough at school level, It starts off as trying to be good, and even the best player in your team at your position, but it changes when you need to play for provincial and national teams at that age.
