High Praise Indeed. Barry has a heightened sensitivity to Art in all its forms. He’s been an author, visual artist, poet & comedian. He breathes creativity.

Barry Humphries was an extremely intelligent man. A perfectionist, he was a performer who lived to bring his best in comedy and to hear people laugh.

Barry Humphries finished a tour at a theatre I managed in the early eighties. Dame Edna and Sir Les featured heavily and it was a fantastic few days. The man was brilliant at ad libbing and had a great rapport with the audiences. A very pleasant, educated artiste.

Ahhh, been waiting for this! We commonly call Tasmania "Tassie" (Tazzy), the reference is usually shortened to something like "Show us your map of Tassie!" 😁 Cheers and thanks m8!

When Les mentioned 'Brian Humphries' and it showed a man in the audience, that was actually Barry Humphries as himself.

Barry Humphries characters were very well crafted. I assume Parky's questions were written by Humphries. So the core of his performance was pre-meditated. However, Humphries was still very quick witted. So he'd effortlessly scoop up any extra random opportunities for a joke. He probably invented the stereotypes he also lampooned. Best Wishes. ☮

Clearly, Parky has been prompted to ask those questions, so Barry knows approximately where he'll be going, but he can't stick to a script, and as you say, he takes the opportunities he creates. Just watch his incredible timing over the vaseline joke. Parky starts it off, but Barry ignores him, and only when the audience settles a bit, does Barry bring it up with "sorry Mike". Then when the audience is still rocking with laughter from that, his eyes glint, and I think he'd just thought of that now outrageously non pc Philippines joke, but he doesn't spit it out immediately, he waits for a lull, then goes forth. I've never seen better comedic timing than that of Barry Humphries..............

He completely inhabits his characters. I don't know if Barry Humphries even exists when he's Dame Edna or Les Patterson.

He's very good at the ad-lib when he's in these characters, and much funnier than he is in person in general.

I watched an interview with Barry a few years ago in which he said “sometimes Edna will say something on stage and I’ll find myself thinking ‘I wish I’d written that!’”

Hey 🐿️👍hope you're well buddy, superb critique there of Barry Humphries comedy style, he was quite masterful without doubt. I believe Barry when he said doing an Erica but not the top half was in reference to Erica Roe when in 1982 during an England vs Australia rugby match she streaked across the pitch with her baps out and had to be escorted off the pitch, no map of Tazmania was flashed that day🙄🤣cheers mate✌️🍻

Erica Roe who did a streak during a Rugby Match involving England at Twickenham in early 1982 removing her top revealing she was 'top heavy'. Impossible to forget with the Policeman attempting to cover his blushes and her naked parts with his helmet - -----'cough' .....his policeman's hat.

It's normally said," Map of Tassie". Check out another Aussie comedian from way back called Norman Guntson. In particular his interviews with Sally Struthers (All in the Family) and Frank Zappa for starters.

I think he knows these two characters in such depth that he is able to adapt to any situation, that's why he is so often at his best in interviews.

You missed Les' well known large 'appendage' down his left pant leg, which he adjusted at 3-12. Also, 'piss up on hanging rock' is a take on the fairly successful Australian film from the '70's called, "Picnic At Hanging Rock". It starred a lot of young women, hence the use of the old Australian slang word for women, sheilas, which you may not have understood.

He's a professional Australian self-deprecation character. It's nonsense linked to attitudes. He isn't drunk there because he'd stopped drinking. Aussies will laugh, and so do we Brits. You sit back and laugh.

Heard Barry explain Les was based on a real drunk Aussie diplomat or official at some event, he was fascinated by him and studied him closely - if anything, he said, the real man was far worse than Les..

Did you clock the audience member squirming at 3.50 in? That was Barry Humphries himself, being repelled by his own creation. Clever bit of editing, a trick he employed a few times. It's all done in the best possible taste, as Cupid Stunt said when interviewed by Parky. ( aka Kenny Everett. )

1982 England v Australia Rugby Match, Half Time entertainment was livened up when Erica Roe run onto the field topless. She was a big girl and all 40 inches of them were exposed to a cold English January day. They were rounded up by a couple of guys and escorted of the field. I think one guy had a stroke. But the other guy behaved himself. England won the Rugby 15-11.

Take me back to 70/80's Australia when woke was something you did in the morning and homosexuals kept to themselves. You could go for a surf with only half a dozen others fuel was 20 to 40 cents a litre and a two hour fish would feed the family for a few meals. A murder was a sad surprise in quiet Perth, Western Australia and life was simple....NO FUCKING INTERNET
