I'm Italian, I live just 10 miles from the Slovenian border, I confirm that it is a small state but very interesting and with lots of things to see, I often go there even just to go to the restaurant for dinner for those unfamiliar with Slovenia, don't forget the spas, the Postojna caves, the food, wine and beer and spirits

As an American observer of this great little country, I think the Slovenian people and culture are its biggest assets. I am astounded at the many-talented Slovenian musicians and performers, highly educated, and plainly good people. I became a huge fan of Oberkrainer music some years ago, and I find myself feeling envious of a country which reminds me of a time when America was good and purer. That is now gone in America, but Slovenia lives on. I deeply hope Slovenia protects the Avsenik influence upon its culture. ❤🇸🇮

Totally agree that Slovenia is a beautiful country. I had to laugh when a Hungarian got the chance to tell that another country was "little" ....a chance they haven't every day given that Hungary isn't that big either.... But in this case .....it is more than 4,5 times the area of Slovenia. A video were one could have a look at Hungary wouldn't be a bad thing. They also have beautiful places. Personally I have some ideas of paddling along Tisza....the most Hungarian river as it's called. Elevation difference is very small, but else how I don't know if it is possible to do. So far when visiting Hungary I've kept myself on land. Another must do video is to have a look at Romania ....specially Transylvania ...with the Carpatean mountains as a backdrop.... ...ooopppsss....maybe I shouldn't mention Romania with a Hungarian present ....haha....

Living just 50 km next to the Austrian-Slovenian border in Graz, Austria, looking out of my window I see the Pohorje, a 1500 m / 5000 ft high mountain next to Maribor. In my youth the adriatic see was mentally associated with vacation in (the former) Yugoslavia. After the Slovenians independence a customer of us brought up a new branch in Slovenia. When visiting their new shop in Koper on a 21st of december and suddenly eating my lunch at the quai looking at the rushing water I realized that Slovenia is much more than tourism. There are people living here! It's their country, not the tourists country. Today I still love to make daytrips to Slovenia! 🥰

@@DamianP-n7b No; we started a war and lose it; it's a pity those lands are not italian anymore, but it's our fault, not yours. It reminds us what a war really means; once, in a vacation in Istria, I came across to a little town, Dignano (don't know the croatian name), there was an italian cemetery, with tombs since the Venetian time, and it was completely abandoned, because there were no Italians there anymore; it was really sad, especially when months later I met on old man, in the hospital where I work, born there, that never had the heart to come back to see his childhood places after 1947. He died a few day later. That way I saw the products of a war: people ripped away from their roots, memory disappearing, grieves, new names and new inhabitants for old cities. Fortunately, you too appreciate Venetian style and Dolce Vita, so in Slovenija and Croatia I feel at home, even if I don't understand the language

Slovenia is the definition of an awesome country. You say: "this is hella underrated, yeah!" It really is a hidden gem. Especially in the western part of Europe it is less well known compared to central and eastern Europe. Slovenia has the mountains in the north west, it has the south western coastal area with lots of historic Venetian influence and great grape fields, and it has the lush green forested areas toward the south east. I live in The Netherlands but really love to go to Slovenia on holidays. In my experience, Piran is a beautiful coast town with good food and a great Adriatic coast vibe, which you can also find in Croatia. Hiša Franko is highly recommended, my dinner there was amazing and especially something different than French or Italian cuisine. Ljubljana indeed feels like a small town. Many capitals don't feel like the rest of the country, that is less so in Ljubljana, although it is really different from Maribor, the second city.

I did the Parenzana route some years ago, it's considered a bike route but I believe it's better to do it on foot. The Slovenian part is absolutely fantastic, great infrastructure and it goes along a beautiful coastline. Riding there was a wonderful experience. Unfortunately the Croatian part was very underdeveloped and you could barely call it a bike route. I some parts the path was so full of rocks that I had to walk for long stretches, and in other places the paths were so muddy it was impossible to even walk because the mud would get stuck in the wheels' mudguards. But the country is beautiful and the people, both in Slovenia and Croatia were very nice (except for that one border guard. I didn't know Croatia wasn't in the Schengen zone yet and was rudely reminded when I tried to cross the border without checking in the customs control)

It is not a big name among its European neighbors, so it is also underrated and unknown to many. The shoreline of Slovenia is very short in comparison to the rest of the Country. Lake Bled is picturesque and is still on my bucket list. Fun fact: In Austrian dialect "bled" means "silly", so to us it is the Silly Lake ;-) I have been once in Porto Roz and at some spectacular caves down there.

Bloody hell they were brave! Not for swimming naked but because it's bloody freezing! I paddled my feet in it on a hot summer day. The waters fed by snow melt from the mountains. I couldn't feel my feet after 30 secs! No way was I brave enough to swim. I think my bits would have inverted!

Hi there slovene here. Slovenia is a hidden jam but I hope it stay that way I do not want to see so many tourists like Venece or Dubrovnik ( that is by the way almost empty in winter with many buisneses closed ). I guess for all of us who live here it is normal to see all this arround us nor realizeing in what a beautiful country we live. But when presenting Slovenia many parts like Dolenjska Prekmurje and Koroška are overlooked. Vineyards in Ormož - Ljutomer are as beautiful as in Vipava valley, panonian plain cusine is as interesting as mediteranian with hungarian twist,. Old towns like Ptuj Škofja loka Celje are as beautiful as old Ljubljana and so on. There are 7 unofficial but historical provinces with its own traditions cousine dialect. All beautiful and all interesting.

There are many hidden gem countries in Europe ....there are all sorts of nature/landscapes ...so it just depends on each individual preferences. Let me mention a few: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Montenegro.

Trump's last wife is from Slovenia. You have heard about Yugoslavia though. Americans should understand that there is much more from Europe than UK, France and Italy. Central Europe and the Balkans have so many things to offer as well.

If you really want to ditch a car and explore a city on foot, then you should really check out our capital city of Slovenia. Ljubljana. Don't even try to pronounce it as you will get your tongue hurt. A big part of our capital is closed for traffic and you have a lot of things you can visit and explore in Ljubljana, all by foot and all just a few minutes away. BTW Slovene's most known athlete/person ATM is for sure Luka Dončić, Dallas Mavericks superstar. I hope I'll see you soon in Slovenia, the only country in the world that has love in it's name and that it's national anthem doesn't glorify it's glorious history/people/wars won etc, but rather praise all the peaceful people and wishes to live in harmony with neighbouring countries/people. Cheers from one of the most greenest and cleanest capital city in the world. :)

Add Croatia to this travel series.. Plitvice Lakes National park is just 1 of the amazing highlights it has to offer. Anyone I've shown pictures of it has gasped a little and looked into going.. V similar to Italy / slovenia in many ways but much less tourists than Italy. Bikes, Scooters, and nowadays e-bike rentals are the way to travel if you don't want to rely on busses/taxi's and walking.. Really love exploring an area on bikes, you can cover a wider area at your own pace and don't need to find parking if you find something interesting.

This video had a title about Slovenia as a "hidden gem" country. Croatia is certainly a gem ....but not a hidden one anymore. Tons of tourists go there all the time......
@boredutopia

@@Dan-fo9dk true but problem is they all flock to coast. North of Croatia and even Slavonija and lika have much more hidden gems tourists have no clue about.. coast too. Last 15 years I avoid coast, in summers I go to far away islands in places such have 0 tourists or to north which also have 0 tourists. Bunch of things too see, beautifull nature, rich history and way more cooler and calmer than coast. Slovenia actually is lucky for still be hidden. With massive tourism comes massive problems. When hordes of drunk Britt's start to urinate and even number 2 in old city areas and public streets, even apartment entrances and churches people kinda had enough. From vomiting all over to constant yelling and screaming in the night, traffic jams 0-24 so people are late for work, streets are crowded and piles of garbage on the streets you kinda wish to stayed hidden.

@@boredutopia Yeah....absolutely can mass tourism have it's flip sides.... Ask Spain or Greece about that.... They have seen that to a much bigger degree and for longer time..... But that was not the topic of the video.... I visited Croatia/Yugoslavia first time in the 1970's and already at that time were there plenty of northern European tourists......specially Germans....and for sure they were all going to the coast.... There are beautiful areas in the north-eastern inland. For example I have some idea of paddling along Sava and enjoy it's surrounding nature....

@@Dan-fo9dk yeah true, Iceland start to have same issues. I think that sometimes some areas with time attract too much people in short time and places can't handle it. Some places like Dubrovnik actually had to determine how many people can enter city in a day coz some sights can't handle too much people in old city parts, literaly are under threat to collapse or be ruined or damaged, like stairs, walls etc.. I think Slovenia has moderate tourism, not too much, but enough.. actually I think you can even check some sites for paddling, think there is groups of people who do it.

In the late 90s. Me and my twin brother had. Found a villa to rent. For holidays, in the Czech Republic. That was. Czechslovekeinen, in the iron curtain. For 12 people, with swimming pool and sauna and a double garage under the house. What was needed? 3 cars, me and my brother. And then someone from our group of friends. €45 per day, and then 2 weeks. And suddenly almost no one had money for it. Everything was really cheap back then. 15 cents for a beer. eating out every day. For €4,-. I've been there myself once. With my work, 2 days.
