In 1996 I visited my sick aunt in Slovenija (Koroska Bela) for ten days. The whole town was excited to see me and I visited at least 6 households every day. By the third or fourth visit, I could no longer even see food let alone eat any of it, so I started declining what was offered. People complained to my aunt, who told my mother, who in turn was super worried I wasn't eating. Not to go too much into my youth but this was not an unfounded concern. However by the end of my stay, I gained so much weight that I couldn't button my pants, only holding them up with my belt. After returning to Canada, my mother saw my chubby face and said in relief, "Oh thank God. You ate." Yes you will be fed.

My wife's parents came to Canada from Slovenia so we have visited a number of times. And absolutely, food and alcohol are always put in front of you when visiting family and friends there. And potatoes? On the first day of our most recent visit this summer we helped our cousin, & her whole family, harvest potatoes. Shoes off, toes in the mud, we helped gather hundreds of pounds of potatoes. The beautiful, friendly people are the most memorable thing about this wonderful country.

After 100 + years of only having our father's (actual) name on his birth certificate (Vremsak) I found his family in Slovenia in 2013. My brother and I have been to visit 3 times. We fell in love with Slovenia the first visit, and have only fallen even more in love with it since. Our family has been very hospitable and warm, in spite of (I presume) their initial skepticism about "the American relatives with a different surname. While trying to understand their caution about Americans (we don't have the best reputation in some places because of American corporate greed and other forms of imperialism), they are welcoming and we always feel very very welcome in Slovenia. Not just our family, but Slovenes in general are very warm and genuinely hospitable, glad to share their beautiful country with any and all who treat their precious earth with respect and love. GO to visit, enjoy the warmth of the Slovene people. !!

Slovenian landscapes are like walking in a fairytale. I loved visiting Slovenia. It is such a beautiful place! And the people were very nice. I will say that when I visited, I was in a rural area outside of Zuzemberk, and many of the locals did not speak English, especially older people. I learned enough Slovenian to get by but I struggled, and I'm sure the locals found it difficult to understand me, but they were very patient.

Gee what a lovely looking place is Slovenia and the people sound amazing....and you do look slightly annoyed with a bit of depression, but that's not the case, you being the warm hearted funny person I know from your videos, which always give me a smile and a nice feeling. Now in Australia we speak in a very nasal way hardly opening our mouth because an open mouth means swallowing a fly, we are always waving our hands shewing flies away so much it's called the Australian salute....that's our national look and feel.

We intended to go on holidays to Slovenia for the first time this year (mid August) to then shortly before arriving (by car from an intermediate stay-over in Germany) receive a cancellation request by the resort due to the extreme rain and the inundiations that this caused. Despite the impact and devastation caused by the bad weather we received a prompt refund and recently even received the cancellation fee as initially promised (well insuranced I guess). We will definitely give it another try on one of the next occasions! I hope nobody lost their lives and that the region will fully recover from this disaster! We offered to help the resort clean up and prepare the remaining accomodation but the situation was developing quickly and became too dangerous and we did not want to burden the emergency services with our presence.

Every time I ordered a drink, meal, or asked directions, I tried my best to talk in Slovenian. People were really great about the way I butchered your language which is beautifully complicated. You are spot on. Both my parents were born there & left in the late 50's. I was born shortly after their arrival in Canada. Slovenian was my first language until I started school. I have been there twice. In 89 for 5 weeks while still under Communist rule & again in 2011 for 3 weeks after it joined the EU. I have a lot of family living there. Been to many places throughout this beautful country but there is still lots to explore. People are friendly & the food is great. Hope to get back soon for another visit.

Interesting fact: Slovenia is one of the rare countries where for fourth time in a row a new party formed 3 months before elections winns. Comunist rule ended in name only, same people hold strings in the background. The leader is promoted as new messiah/Steve Jobs/wunderkind by media, while the real rullers rulle from backstage. When voters become dissilusioned by the puppet, popularity drops, the eternal elite finds new single use savior of the nation (new face!). Rinse and repeat. Recipe works, why change it?

I definitely want to go. I know that I have cousins on both grandparents sides. I have studied the language and I am researching immigration records and birth certificates. It is a matter of money. I do not drink coffee so I might have a problem, but on the other hand I can eat an amazing amount of food at one sitting. Luckily I was raised by second generation immigrants who kept a lot of their Slovene ways. The personality thing is something that even goes for my family. We are all assumed to be upset or sad while we’re just enjoying a little quiet time inside our heads.

(At a time where slovenes would have considered the place these delicious things come from, as the main capitol of their country) From all the athletes you mentioned i only knew the two ski ladies. There are famous slovene ski jumpers too that you didn't mention but i don't remember their name. And you got one of biggest fmaous ski jumping hills too in Planica.

Greetinga from Poland Barbara! I've never been to Slovenia but your description of homeland makes me wanna visit fellow slavic country. Maybe a honeymoon trip in near future :) Some thoughts about expression on Your face and tone of voice: We have literally the same situation in Poland ;D Everybody I pass by on the street has a depressed look by Western standards. It can be troubling for many visitors who are used to seeing happy people saying hello when met during a walk. Most people (like 99% of population) also use soft, monotonous voice or sound very tired. Imho it's a strange quirk that came in 1945 with communism. Basically an Eastern Bloc thing that can be fixed with alcohol and good food on the table among friends and loved ones. Contrary to most I tend to smile a lot without a reason and draw attention with my ginger hair resulting in many Poles thinking I am a tourist from Scandinavia or Ireland. I do not know really why I am in that smiling 1% that breaks the depressing impression but I try everyday to make someone smile or make their day better by being polite, small talk or simple gestures like a helping hand with carrying stuff in my job or holding a door for someone. Anyway I urge You to visit Poland someday, it's a beautiful country with colorful history and culture. Contrary to most EU countries we suffered no terrorist attacks ( we love our zeros), there are no "nogo zones", public transport and streets are safe and clean. Much love from Poland !!!
@SmilingShadow-jl5tr
@SmilingShadow-jl5tr 7 ай бұрын
With the inflation being what it is you will not see many happy people on the streets now, at least not in America. People were happy when life was really good, because there was literally nothing to worry about in a life of an average person. Also, in the USA women would always smile more than men. For men to be smiling was always fairly unusual, even when life was good, so when I was smiling (because I was very happy with my awesome job and a new awesome life in America in early 2000s) people literally called me “smiley” or “sunshine”…

😅My Maternal Grandparents immigrated from Slovenia to Cleveland, My Grandfather’s Sister’s family immigrated to Kanada. I have many cousins in Kanada. My Mother & Father were part of the Rebel Clan that escaped to the Great Republic of Texas. So I’m one of the few Slovenes who live in the Republic of Texas. I have many fond memories of spending the summers in Cleveland with my Grandparents. I enjoyed the homemade Kelbasa made by my Uncle Beanie & Grandmother’s Strudel & Poticia. Slovenians are the nicest & warmest people on the planet. You will gain weight when around the Slovenes. The beer & wine we shared with family were the greatest.

You forgot to say that Slovenians regularly visit Croatian coast at summer time. Besides doing same outdoor sporting activities, they also do that on the sea.

When I visited Slovenia in 2018 and asked for where I should visit the coast, everybody told me "Croatia". Last week I visited Piran and was a little bit disappointed by the people in 2018 who told me to go to Croatia.

Those 7 olympic medals still seemed like a small number. So, I looked it up and it's actually 40 medals for Slovenia alone. Or 52 medals in total for all Slovenian athletes since 1912, which is even more impressive :)

When 4yo I was in Liliana in a house of lady, who had a parrot. Parrot seat on my sholder and told me: "Daj lubiczku" (or how you spell it in Slovenian?) and I did. The bird painfully pecked my lip and I ended up crying.
