Americans probably have little concept of just how dense traffic on the Autobahn tends to be. He is driving through the ass-end of nowhere on a Sunday in November. That's essentially as free as it gets. But Germany is an international trade hub and a LOT of that is transported on trucks. Whatever you need to go between Western and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the South, it's going through Germany. And that means trucks on the Autobahn. Tons of them. Everywhere. As mentioned, Sunday means no trucks. That's like half the traffic gone already.

When you get caught by Radar/Camera , the Letter goes to the owner along with a picture of the driver (the passenger is censored for privacy reasons). If you didn't drive yourself you have to provide proof that you didn't do it (maybe easy based on the photo) but you have to provide the name of the driver. If you fail to provide the name, you may be forced to keep a logbook for your car for the future, which may be a huge hustle and comes with fines if it is not kept correctly.
@m.h.6470

Wrong. You can just say "It wasn't me" and prove it. You do NOT have to provide the name of the actual driver. THEY have to investigate. I regularly drive my brothers car and he never provided my name, when I got a ticket. And he was never forced to keep a logbook.

On tunnels: An accident with fire is a severe issue. The Montblanc tunnel fire in 1999 killed 39 people. Even though this accident was not caused by high speed (a transport truck caught fire) it clearly showed that you especially don't wont any accidents in tunnels. Also, research has shown that curved tunnels are safer than straight tunnels.

@Lisa-xn9xc

Also you might have problems with emmisions in tunnels. Some tunnels are even closed sometimes, because the emissions get too height and the ventilation isn't good enough. Driving faster would cause more emissions so the tunnel would need to be closed more often. Another reason is how wide the tracks are. I could imagine that in a lot of some tunnels the tracks get a little bit more narrow.

Like phantom side, the main reason so many people died in the Montblanc tunnel where poor safety infrastructure. Ryan, I have to disagree with you. The systematic disregard of any rules by a large number of drivers in the USA is definitely not a sign of relaxed driving, it is a sign of stupidity. Rules that the majority of drivers adhere to ensure that they are safe alongside and with each other on the roads. The ridiculous driving schools and tests in the USA are also not suitable for ever achieving this level of safety. -- And one more thing: Ryan, when you get a letter from the authorities telling you when and where you were speeding and how much too fast, there is usually also a (front) photo of the vehicle License plate and the driver can be identified. “My grandma drove the car” doesn’t work!

Of course, you say that... typical German trying to justify the German way of life. I find it fascinating how Germans attempt to justify every single thing they do... Germans can't even imagine that there are some people who do not obsess over every single rule. And I can assure you, they live happier and healthier lives than any German ever will. People who have been outside of Germany know how truly relaxed a human being can be. But for some reason, Germans are always stressed and annoyed by everything. I wonder if it is because of the weather, but that would not make sense because many other countries with the same climate are not even remotely as annoyed. And the best of all is always Germans insulting everyone and everything that is not like them... "Oh, that American is smiling and happy. He is faking it; he is afraid of being shot, that is why..." because people who are truly happy do not exist 😄 "Americans earn more money than we do in Germany? Yeah, but at least we do not have school shootings and free healthcare." "Americans earn more money than we do in Germany? Yeah, but at least we do not have houses made out of paper." Germans seriously can't be helped. Keep living your black-and-white life, following everything your government and society tells you. That is literally the most German thing ever, and it still persists to this day. The biggest thing anyone can experience is the realization that German society is messed up and absolutely not admirable.

German here. 1) Driving works well here because we stick to the rules. Lane discipline is spot on. No-one brake checks other cars. People indicate in timely manner. Just stick to the rules. It's not hard. 2) Trucks don't drive on a Sunday because work is prohibited on Sundays and public holidays. 3) If a speed camera catches you then you get a fine with a photo in the mail. They know who the driver is. 4) We have a lot of traffic on our roads because Germany is transport hub. We're in the middle of western Europe. A lot of people pass through to get around. 5) The roadworks can be annoying but I prefer it to the bad roads in other countries. 6) School holiday refers to a general school holiday, not Sundays in particular. Many parents take leave from work during school holidays so the whole family can go on a vacation. Hence more traffic during school holidays. 7) Parking spaces are not smaller, they are normal sized. For normal sized cars :) FWIW I drive Autobahn everyday. Generally I drive around 120km/h. Occasionally I'll push it to as high as 200km/h. Not often though. No need to drive fast just because you can.

The usual speed limits you will encounter on the Autobahn are 120, 100, 80 or 60 km/h. 120 or 100 are mostly applied at large merging areas or when there is much traffic or bad visibility. 80 or 60 are mostly only used in construction areas or on / off ramps. It's very common to have electronic signs above the Autobahn that can display and change speed limits or other signs according to the current conditions. BTW 60 km/h is in effect the MINIMUM speed for the Autobahn, and only vehicles that can go faster than that are allowed to even get on the Autobahn. You are not allowed to slow down the flow of traffic without a valid reason. In Germany, speed cameras in tunnels sometimes do not have a red light flash but work with black light. The official reason is so that other road users are not frightened. But in reality, other speeders should not be warned by a red flashing light. And with regard to traffic density, it has to be said that this is sometimes so high. That there are also distance control systems with cameras that pose a challenge even for German drivers. Because it can be really expensive and if it happens too often your driving licence will be gone at some point. At first only for a limited time. And if you don't learn from it. Your driving licence is revoked until you have passed the MPU (medical psychological examination) and this can cost several years and several thousand euros.

2:25 if you're going from the north end to the south end or other way round, you can save some hours. From east to west you can save about an hour or two. BUT you have tons of traffic jams throughout the entire country that can cost you the time you just saved. The recommended speed for unlimited strechtes is 130km/h (80mp/h) ... Construction sites on the Autobahn are between 60-80 (35-50mp/h) depending on the amount of space left on the road. Most Stretches are limited to 120km/h (75mp/h). 5:18 we and some neighbour countrys had some serious accidents inside of tunnels. Also, if you crash inside tunnel 1. you crash harder and decelerate faster as if you were in an open area. 2. chances are higher you hit someone else because there's less space. 3. after the crash you'll probably block the entire tunnel keeping others from being able to flee 4. smoke will fill the Tunnel, killing people and making it harder for search and rescue teams 5. if you're in a tunnel that's over a mile long (most of the tunnels are around that lenght or more) you really don't want to crash or someone else crash into you. 7:40 guess it's all about the speed. If you mess up on American Highways you hit each other with differences of about 10-20 miles and will end up in the Hospital with some broken bones. On the Autobahn, if you go 100 and mess up, chances are high someone behind you comes up with 300 and you both are literal dust. Also we are quiet aggresiive towards people who recklessly endager others. No one cares if you kill yourself (besides the guy who have scratch you off the street). If you endanger others you get treated like shit. 9:20 yes it's the density, you have like 300 million people on the second largest country in the world compared to 80 Million people on an area roughly the size of Montana + Idaho + Wyoming 10:00 it's the speed again, you simpley need good roads to drive 300km/h +, also it decreases wear on the cars. 12:40 Trucks aren't allowed because of the noise they produce (that's why they're also limited to 80km/h). Here are a lot laws around noises, partwise because of the density of the population, partwise because permanent Noise can lead to severe Mental issues. 13:45 it's rare but there some stretches without shoulders on the autobahn, usually these areas are limited to 120km/h. Also if you leave the Autobahn, it's incredibly rare to have shoulders.
Ай бұрын
If you go 120 in a 80 limit you'll not only have to pay, you'll also get rid of your drivers licence for some weeks (I think 40 over makes two or three months). The cameras take you from the front, so they see your face. If you seem to be lucky and your face is somehow hidden (many drivers have a CD dangeling at the mirror for exact that reason) you might have one shot free - but then you have to write a so called 'Fahrtenbuch' what means a protokoll who is driving the car, time, start- and end point, te start and end kilometres and so on. If you get get caught by avoiding it - the fine is even higher. If you get fined to often you might loose your licence completely for a year or two, sometimes longer, and you'll have to redo the complete process in driving school, what costs about 2000-6000€, depending on what you need. (Car, motorbike, truck - thats all seperated and you'd have to redo it all). Not only that- you also might have to do the so called MPU (Medizinisch Psychologische Untersuchung). To stand that you'd better visit some classes, and - thats additional about 1500 to 4000€ in preperation. Btw. it's very very rare, but if you do get some certain judges it might be enough to collect many parking tickets to get sent to the MPU. Some more about fines: If you are a so called 'Berufskraftfahrer' what means a professional driver who earns money by driving, your fine doubles. Also if you did the 'crime' by purpose your fine doubles. So never ever tell the policeman you've been so fast because you are in a hurry! And if you get pulled over and the policeman asks 'You know why we stopped you?' - No you don't! ;-) Btw. the 'Sonntagsfahrverbot' does not contain trucks with sensitive food that has to be cooled eg. AND there is the possibility tu buy an expensive special licence to drive anyways. You might call it a highway robbery and you wouldnt fail ;-)

In Germany tunnel are constructed for a speed limit of 100 km/h as per law, this is due to safety reasons. Especially when driving into or out of a tunnel visibility of the road ahead may be bad and as precaution the speed is reduced (which is also why it is advised to take of your sunglasses so that your eyes adjust better to the different light) . Older tunnels which aren't up to modern standards or are having some technical issues will have a speed limit of 80 km/h or less. Also accidents or technical problems with cars and trucks are a bigger safety concern while in a tunnel, due to mentioned visibility, sometimes lack of cellphone service (which results in people on the road searching for an emergency station) and the restricted possibilities to evacuate people in cases of fire.

Yes, some stretches of the Autobahn don't have a shoulder (or "Standstreifen"), but instead occasional "emergency bays". But he was specifically referring to lanes in construction zones on the Autobahn. Often the left lane is so narrow, semis and even wider cars are not actually allowed to drive on them (maximum 2 meters including side mirrors). You can be fined and in case of an accident usually get fault for any damages caused.

16:35 have you ever passed a long "box" style truck while you were at least 20km/h faster than the truck? You can usually feel the side-pulling forces of the air draft that's created between the vehicles, and that effect would get amplified in a narrow tunnel. That's one of several reasons why Autobahn tunnels are almost always limited to 80km/h. Oh, and fun fact: pretty much all tunnels are intentionally NOT built 100% straight. They at least have slight curves at the entrance and exit to avoid literal 'tunnel vision' (or getting blinded by sunlight outside the tunnel)

The officially "recommended speed" on the Autobahn is 130 kph, which is also the base speed limit if there is any. At dangerous sections (known for accidents) it can go down to 80 kph, and some sections have variable speed limits depending on weather and traffic density which can go down to 60 kph and up to no speed limit at all. Tunnels can be dangerous, especially if constructed some years ago as safety rules for tunnel construction were not so strict as they are now, and if some accident happens there, emergency rescue can be difficult. 6:40 The automatic speeding camera will take a photo showing license plate and driver from the front. The owner of the car gets the ticket and can either accept it or try to prove that the photo does not show them. In that case they could however be hold responsible for lending their car only to people they know as responsible drivers and also to identify the driver (but in some situations they could get away with not recognizing the driver). 8:20 For most Germans it is part of being socially responsible to follow (certain) rules - they follow those rules because they consider it the right (and smart) thing to do, not out of fear of being caught. Also following traffic rules makes for more safe and more relaxed travelling. 12:00 Only certain trucks are allowed to drive at the Autobahn at Sundays and public holidays, and those only at certain hours (for example urgent deliveries of certain goods). It is part of the Sunday as constitutional day of rest. 13:45 There can be short stretches of Autobahn missing a full shoulder lane, especially older parts or sections under construction. But there are also Autobahn-like federal expressways which do not follow the same standards as the "real" Autobahn and can have no shoulder lane at all, for example in tighter spots around cities.

They think that this rules are made for punishing and make money. In Germany we pay tax for all streets and the Autobahn. If there is a speed limit, it will be a reason for it. Protect people for noise at night time ore there is a point upcoming with a lot of accidents in the past and so on. That might be the reason why we have a lot of changeable traffic signs.

Most parts of the German Autobahn are without general speedlimits. However, these unlimited stretches often have digital traffic signs that can be set from a central control center. Trucks not being allowed on Sundays and holidays in general has two reasons. One is the same reason shops are closed on sundays, which mostly religious folks really appreciate these days. Other things go back to emissions reduction (noise is an emission as well) and there sure may be some other reasons. Those are by the way bans on trucks overall, not restricted to the Autobahn. There are only exceptions within a certain range from a port or a station were trucks can be loaded on a train, for perishable goods, for just the tractor with no load or exhibition vehicles and if there are possibly some written exceptions for certain deliveries. Oh, fire trucks, federal agencies (emergency services in general) and the military are excempt as well.

The speed rule in Germany is not that you are allowed to drive as fast as you can, but as fasts as you can drive safely. The driver need to consider way more than just the maximum speed of your car. The nice thing on Autobahn is ... there is no oncomming traffic, no traffic lights, no crossings, no slow traffic (min. 60 km/h), no bicycles or pedestrians. Speedlimits usually start with 120 and incremently go down to the target speed limit (120, 100, 80, 60, 40 [yes that can happen]). Without speed limit you still have to expect an obstacle out of sight that forces you for a full stop (accident, traffic jam etc.). Stopping can be really difficult when travelling with 200 km/h. Now calculate the braking distance in your head (you have 1 second time to do that).

5:18, I guess its because the guardrails at the side of the Autobahn are elastic and if a car crashes into them at a high speed the driver of the car gets less harmed, than he would get if he´d crash into the concrete wall of a tunnel at the same speed. Another reason could be that the sight in the tunnels are worse than on the road so you see cars wich have glitches worse and may crash into them because you cant react anymore

Trucks carrying loads that need to be cooled (fresh produce, frozen goods, dairy or meat products etc.) are allowed to drive on sundays. When the drivers have to stop somewhere to take their break, they have to leave the cooling engine on the truck running all the time so their load doesn't spoil. It is already wasteful on a regular 10-12 hour break and would waste a lot of fuel if the driver clocks out saturday 5 PM and is allowed to continue on Monday 00 AM. So if you encounter a truck with a hardcase trailer on a sunday, it's most likely a load of food that needs to be somewhere by monday morning. 😂

I guess the amount of traffic really depends on where you are. As Europe as a whole is a bit more compact, there is a lot of city-to-city traffic. And because cities aren't as far apart as in some places in America, you barely ever get far away enough from all cities to notice a big decline in traffic. When it comes to trucks not driving on sunday, that's partially due to labour laws and partially due to noise laws. Most jobs aren't allowed to work on sundays (obviously there are exceptions), and this includes truck drivers (again, with exceptions). When it comes to the school holidays on sunday, I think he refers to sundays within holiday periods. This can often result in high traffic due to families coming back from vacation, as the kids need to go back to school the following day. A great example for this are trans-alpine routes during the easter holidays: For example, the Gotthard road tunnel in Switzerland gets completely clogged every year. It's a combination of the weather (during that time the weather north of the alps is often still somewhat cold and foggy, but warm and sunny south of the alps), the fact that roads through the alps aren't as numerous as in the flatlands, so they are natural chokepoints, and the fact that due to school holidays many families want to go through at the same time (usually different regions have slightly different dates for school holidays, but you can't exactly do that for easter or christmas)

There are exceptions to the Sunday driving ban for trucks that transport fresh products, e.g. milk, fruit. A truck can also drive on Sundays without a trailer if the tractor unit weighs less than 7.5 tons.

On cultural difference: I spent quite some time in the states and I've always worked with children. In the US there are rules that are strictly followed, mostly concerning food or illnesses which would not be followed as strictly in Germany. In Germany little kids are taught road safety rules as they are more likely to walk (I've had kids walk to school in the US as well but they usually just had to cross a couple of roads or walk alongside one because roads tend to be mostly straight and in blocks so there are only few rules they need to learn. Plus if you visit friends even if you stay within walking distance to your school it's going to be the same couple of rules really, while in Germany if you go to the opposite side of school there's going to be new streets and new rules. (Sidewalk yes/no? -in the US there's rarely sidewalks and it's the same rule with or without. Cars parked on the side? Football field near the street? Anything obtructing the view to the street? Can cars see you walking or do you need to be careful? Traffic lights/stop signs... On the other hand Germany is getting there but it is a horrible place for the disabled. Accessibility is a huge problem. I was really happy to see all the ways the US cater to all kinds of disability and they go above and beyond to cater to your needs. But that positive attitude towards the disabled also means more entitled Karens.

7:55 the reason for the differences in following rules go back to the founding era of the United States. Just remind yourself who came to the US or the Thirteen Colonies back then. It wasn’t those who were successful for the most part, it was people who either did not fit in, did not want to fit in, didn’t have a great future in sight back in Europe, had criminal records, people looking for religious freedom and also people who wanted to make a lot of money. All these different groups of people usually had one thing in common: they either followed their own set of rules or wanted freedom in some or another way. Following rules in a vastly unpopulated new country doesn’t really make that much sense in comparison to a densely populated small country. For decades and probably even centuries a lot of people in the US could simply do whatever they wanted to, there were no downsides in not following rules for the most part.

In construction sites on the Autobahn the left lane and sometimes also the middle lane are more narrow. So instead of having maybe 2,5 m you have only 2,1 m. So driving a car measuring more than 2,1 m from mirror to mirror on the narrow lane is forbidden. Nevertheless lot of SUV cars try to overtake a truck by squeezing between truck und middle lane divider, sometimes causing bad accidents. As there is a speed limit of 80 kmh or even 60 kmh in construction sites nobody should feel the need to overtake. But there is always this someone... And then there is no shoulder or emergency lane on the side, so causing an accident or your car broke down is a pretty bad situation.

Ryan, you'd be surprised how weird you're looking while driving into a speeding trap (Blitzer). Some weeks later you'll receive a nice and pretty sharp portrait of you at the wheel. Those systems are pretty well aligned to record exactly the face of the person driving the car. The owner will be summond only if the person driving wouldn't be recognisable, eg. by wearing a mask - that would have to be a mask covering more than just the mouth. About rules: maybe it's just the significantly higher population density. Just today I've read: the state of Texas is twice as big as Germany and has a population of around 30 million people. Germany has around 80 million. You actually gain freedom by following rules because if you and all others didn't follow rules you'd just bump from one crash into the next one, from one traffic jam into the next one. But it's not only population density. Our modern way of life is much faster than say 50 or more years ago. Interestingly our laws and rules didn't change very much. However we're protected better by seat belts, electronic driving assistants, more safety minded car design, better means of supervision, ... but also by people being aware of moving in much denser traffic than before and being more careful due to that experience.

My uncle once took the car of my granny and got into a speeding camera. A few weeks later my granny received a letter with the speeding ticket. My uncle of course paid it for her, but at least in this case the ticket went to the car owner, not the driver. I don't drive myself and no longer live in Germany for quite some time now, so I don't know if that would be the norm, but I assume it is...

Here in the Netherlands we use the shoulder as a third traffic lane at some hours during the day with high traffic flow, so you better not break down there ! Every kilometer they made a small parking spot if your car has some issues.

First: perfectly guessed. 120km/h are the correct speed limit, typically 😁 secondly: there is obviously the safety reason in a tunnel which is why you need to drive slowly. Also if you drive faster, the ceiling lights are going by faster, too which could possibly lead to a Epileptic seizure, provoking an extremely dangerous situation. That being said, tunnels in cities are mostly restricted on 80 or 60 km/h, while the tunnels I saw up until now on the Autobahn are 100 km/h which seems to be the maximum. The fast ceiling lights could potentially lead to a Epileptic seizure if you drive faster (said someone at one point to me, don't know the context on why it got to that point though), the risk of loosing control over your car gets higher, most tunnels in Germany are bending, even if it is just slightly and so on 😁

7:40 This is pretty much a historical development. The USA were founded in violent revolution and this has marked their anti-authority character ever since. Compared to that, Germany has for thousands of years had kings and emperors, and democracy is a very recent thing here (first time ever was likely the Weimar Republic, i.e. 1918-1933), and the system was not trusted very much due to the circumstances of the time. "Society runs smoothly if everyone follows the rules - provided they are fair" is thus a very German mindset because it so far generally worked.

Recently all the videos I play here seem to be kind of zoomed in, while they still play in a 720 pixel viewport, which means I lose about 120 pixels at the bottom. How can I fix that? TIA

We have much more traffic, cause it is more dense and we are also transit country. Since we are in the middle most goods in Europe cross Germany (east/west and north/south)

Hello Ryan, in Austria we have Section Control on some Parts of the Autobahn. It measure the Time driving a measured Distance with your Car. If the time is to short you are going to fast and get a Ticket.

When you get a ticket in Germany, you have the option to reply, that you didn't drive and give the identity of the driver, so the driver can be fined. I've heard, you can also say you didn't drive and don't know who did. But in a case like this the authorities could order you to keep a drivers log, where you have to track every drive and the driver. But as I said, I never checked the laws on this and never have seen such a case in reality. It's just something I have heard, so it can be wrong. But to my understanding the German laws expect you to know who is driving your car, since it's your car.
