@8:00 - the counter balance would've been the (up to) 900 t bridge-part, that was kept behind the anchor all the time ;)

On a YT chanel called "RC Video" is a video about this maschine in RC scale. Fully working of course.

with the counter balance, it was holding the concrete and metal bridge joint as it was extending over the gap. That would be a massive amount of counter balance.

If you liked that, you might enjoy this timelapse of the “Golden Bridge” (actually more of a straw yellow) arriving and being installed in Stockholm back in 2020. It was brought in - in one prefabricated piece - on the semisubmersible heavy lift ship Zhen Hua 33, which then sank halfway so the bridge (supported on two barges) could be floated off. There are better videos of the arrival, and I know TV had good footage of the unwelding and refloating process, but this gives a good overview. Incidentally, there’s a tiny white speck next to the little ferry dock just above the yellow crane at the far left of the video. I've never seen a bridge laying machine like that. All bridge construction I have ever seen used stationary cranes that had to be moved for every section of the bridge. This thing here really is next level. It remembers me of modern railroad construction machines, but on a much larger scale.

Its called a Launching gantry. The basic technology dates back to pretty much the middle ages. What is special with the SLJ900 is that it both transport and launch as well as support its own over hang. Most Launching gantry use the stability of the bridge they stand on. This works great with a wood or a steel bridge. It also works great with short section concrete bridges. But with long section once, it don´t work. The load is to high. Fully self supported launch gantry are not that uncommon either. But they get the bridge section transported to them typically on a low loader. Now SLJ900 have a quite serous flaw. It can´t meet on the bridge and it can´t hand over work. If you have a low loader and a Launching gantry there is a very short handover process of about 5 minutes, then the loader goes back to get a new element, and the gantry goes forward to install the element. Both teams can work simultaneous. With the SLJ900 you still need two teams, but only one can work at a time. This makes it to a very nitch product that really just works well when its constant getting in and out of tunnels. If you have a conventional gantry it would need to be deconstructed and transported for every tunnel, but something like a self-contained one can just drive right thru. Of cause, the bridge segment have to be transported to the site via a low loader anyway. This makes it a bit more complicated. On the other side if the tunnel there is probobly a system that lift down the segments from a low loader and places them on the deck. Making the loading of the segments on the SLJ900 a bit complicated as well. So generally, its not a good solution. I´m recommended against buying one if you absolutely don´t need this specific solution

They built the London Docklands light railway in the same way, once the towers were built laying the track was super quick

That’s an awesome bit of kit. There’s loads of things like this that I had no idea existed. Until I started on the work site I’m on now , a year ago, I didn’t know there was a thing called a side tipper…. A semi trailer that open the roof and the side to tip off it’s load sideways and not out the back tailgate 😳

Have you watched the Plasser Machine doing it's thing? I first saw this 40 years ago when my husband was working on rail construction, and the kids loved going to get Dad from work, just so they could see it in action. It is fascinating. Plasser is an Austrian company and has been in Australia for about 50 years. They are leaders in track maintenance.

They use the new road section as a counterweight. Until the machine is fixed on the next pillar. I have a crane diploma myself. About 24 years, I work June 2 .25 years for the same company. You should look at a documentary about building the highest bridge in the world, the Milau viaduct. The distance between the pylons is huge. They had to push the sections out unsupported from above or below.

I've seen a video like this before, but this one gave me some perspective. The wheels on that machine are taller than the humans climbing around on the machine.

I’d say, the longer a bridge (that also uses identical spans), the more this machine makes sense.

This reminds me of the machines used to build to build skyrail over Murumbeena in Melbourne. It was built above an operating railway in quite cramped conditions and the spans were each made from about ten blocks of concrete which were held together with steel cables.

That vehicle is insane

Not only is it important to get the length of the bridge girder right but the position of the bridge pylon as well must be pinpoint accurate or the whole lot would be a massive fail. And the pylon is standing out in midair having been stood up from goodness knows how far below.

Check out the construction of the Cetina bridge in Croatia, which is currently build. The two parts were moved into place from both sides (at first they had a significant difference of their height level) but could be mated shortly.

before you even start to make this machine you have to imagine the entire process! That in itself is incredible.

Every now & then, you really need to stop & have a good look at the amazing things, humans do. From mining the minerals out of the ground, to making the tools, then the machines, parts etc & putting it all together to make it work. Humans are truely amazing. 👍

This is very clever. But - and this is just a guess - the pillars and the road elements have to be build a lot stronger, than usual. The footprint of this giant, is very small. Just look at the video at 3:40. The rear wheels are in the middle of the previous road section. You probably have something like a few hundred tonnes or more of weight, plus the weight of the new section. All this on a foot print if a few normal trucks. Any engineer, please correct me, if I'm wrong.

Great video, I love myself a good machine. I am a printer(old style) and work on many different machines, we even have two 75 year old machines, just great mechanics, still works like a beauty, love working on them.

They used a system like this when they built the Westagte Bridge in Melbourne but the sections were much smaller. It is a fairly common system these days but no less amazing.

If, on top of that, they had a nice government that helps people rather than destroys them, it would be a great country to live in.

In the region of Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. We have elevated public trains. They are all built in this manner. Pre-built off site or in dedicated area. I love the way they just get stuff done. And on time and under budget usually. Same in Japan. They even apologise to the public if a day over. Meanwhile here in the uk. Its the opposite of that lol

G'day Ian, now how do they move it from site to site? most likely take about 2 weeks to break it down, just so it can be transported to the next site, and then reassemble it.

you have interesting glasses, they actually look like safety goggles. :p But yeah, as person who has welded constructions for skyscrapers and huge machinery, everything is measured in milimeters , and you can have like max mistake of like 2mm per metre on stuff that is long and huge. And there are actually made adjustments on site for all the small mm mistakes.
