England technically dates itself from 927 when Alfred The Great’s grandson went from King of Wessex to King of the English. King Charles III is a direct blood descendant of his younger brother and successor who was the 2nd King of the English, so he is a direct blood descendant of Alfred The Great of Wessex. King Charles is also a direct blood descendant of William The Conqueror.

Hi. Just within the first few minutes of the video you’re reacting to there is a mistake where he shows the Union flag dated 1603. That should be 1707. That is when Scotland and England became one nation-state. In 1603 they had the same monarch but were still 2 completely separate independent nation-states. Also they used the Union flag from 1801 when Ireland was incorporated into the nation-state to become the UK. Between 1707 and 1801 a slightly different flag was used without the cross of St Patrick in it. I don’t have much hope for the accuracy of the rest of the video 😂

@stefanomartello3786
@stefanomartello3786 2 ай бұрын
@@CallumGroom Well it depends on your definition of castle... If you mean proper castles as we intend them today, they were a roman thing, the "castellum" (small fortified place) but the modern concept was developed in the middle ages (modifying the roman castellum idea) in continental Europe (Italy, Germany and France in order) after the fall of the Carolingian Empire. In Britain they kept using the roman version up until the Saxon invasions and then they imported the european version. If you instead consider a castle a fortified hilltop or a walled city, similar things then were a thing since 1000-1200 BC but they were not a uniquely british building at all. You can find them in britain, spain, italy, greece, mesopotamia (even in 3000BC, 2000 years before britain, if you consider walled cities) middle east, china (same note as mesopotamia), indochina, southwest asia, africa and many other places. It's the most basic form of defense and I doubt we can trace an "inventor" for that since it was developed indipendently almost everywhere and it's not what we consider a castle anyway. :/ Castle can be considered either a roman, a continental-european or a worldwide invention, depending on the definition, but surely not british, I'm sorry Have a nice day mate!👍

Re French Influence on English. In 1940 Churchill gave a famous speech. "We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, We shall never surrender'." One odd phrase is 'Landing Grounds' Churchill chose those words deliberately, because unlike the other words that he could have used, Landing and Grounds are Anglo-Saxon origin words and not French origin. In fact the entire sentence is Anglo-Saxon, save for one word. Surrender. He didn't do this to evoke some sort of Anglo-Saxon nationalism, British exceptionalism or to label Surrender as something only the French did; instead he used the simplest words available, not to make the message simple (he wasn't talking down to his audience) he did it to emphasis that the word Surrender was alien and did not belong. Simply it was something that we would not do. But due to the quirk of history the simple English words all have an Anglo-Saxon origin. Its true there are more French origin words in English than those of an Anglo-Saxon origin. But, the language at its basic remains Anglo-Saxon. The French words came in after Anglo-Saxon had developed. They offered nuance and complexity where the Anglo-Saxon words could not, but the basic words remain Anglo-Saxon. Thus when Churchill chose to write the words as simply as possible he wrote sentences nearly entirely in Anglo-Saxon words.

Elizabeth's death in 1603 and the succession of James I (James VI of Scotland,) to the English throne, didn't result in the union of Scotland & England, since James ruled both nations, not as a combined country, but as two individual countries, coincidentally with the same person being King of both. The Union of England and Scotland didn't happen until much later when the English Parliament passed the "Union with Scotland Act" in 1706 and the Scottish Parliament passed the "Union with England Act" in 1707. These laws were passed by each of the two countries for varying political and economic reasons, and Queen Anne, (James' great granddaughter,) ceased to be both 'the Queen of England', 'the Queen of Ireland AND 'the Queen of Scotland' and became 'the Queen of England & Scotland' (& also 'the Queen of Ireland' as a separate title, Later in 1707, she became 'the Queen of Great Britain & Ireland'.

The Abbey at T/S4.50ish is Whitby Abbey and a major view where I live. While King William may have created the Mott and Bailey Castles, but they were not the first fortifications in the UK, going back before the Romans the Celts built fortified Villages as life was not so simple with a tribal system ruling in Britain before Julius Caesar. Britain has had a lot of rulers over the years with several families having claim to the Throne of England.

No, the death of Elizabeth Tudor united the crown of Scotland and England, the political union didn’t happen until 1707, 104 years (that included a short time as a republic) later. The UK is only 69 years older than the US…though in it current formation it’s only 102 years old. It’s the individual countries of The Union that make it old, not the political union itself.

@@peterjackson4763 I know you’re technically right about 1801, it’s just not quite as clear cut as that in practice though, as Ireland had been under English rule for centuries before then. If you read the whole of my comment, you’d have noticed that I stated that it’s only been in its current formation for the last 102 years (I took the length of time from when the partition of Ireland happened in 1921 though I’m aware that the actual split didn’t happen until 1922…though it could be stated that full independence didn’t happen until the split from The Commonwealth in 1949.

Albion was the name before the Romans arrived. They named it Britannia, hence Britain and the Anglo-Saxons named it England. Named after Angeln, Germany. The Eng part comes from the German word for Angel "Engel." England means "land of the angels, " but before all that it, Albion is the oldesr recorded name. King Henry VIII started the Church Of England. What is a Protestant religion. This is a reason why Ireland has Loyalist. Loyal to the British who are mainly Protestant, and the Catholics (unionist) who were against the Church of England and the Royal family and wanted a united Ireland. I can not fully say it was because of King Henry VIII starting the Church or if it was another reason, or a mixure. But before that. England was mainly ruled by The Roman Catholic Church.

The Normans were not French. Nobody even claimed to be “King of France” until half a century after the Norman invasion. Even after the establishment of the Kingdom of France, most of its inhabitants did not speak French, until Napoleon imposed the language on them. Today's standard French is based on the dialect predominant in Paris at the time this happened. In 1066, the Normans spoke Norman French, which differed significantly from the dialects elsewhere.

The succession of James I of England (James VI of Scotland) in 1603 did not unite England and Scotland, although james did want that to happen, neither did it lead to the creation of the Union flag. The Union of England and Scotland did not occur until over a century later when, in the rule of Queen Ann, the Acts of Union were signed in 1707, this lead to the creation of the United Kingdom.

I'm Scottish, and descended from Picts and celts mostly, but one of my eight great grandparents was from Bamburgh (far north of England, although it switched countries a dozen times during the middle ages) and we can trace his ancestry back in that specific region to the 14th century. I did one of those DNA things for a laugh recently and I was surprised by how accurate it was. The only surprise was the amount of Danish in me. The vikings invaded Scotland and North England during the 9-11th centuries so it's not a surprise that there would be some traces left in many of us, but apparently they found 15% Danish in me and none of my recent family is from there. So it's likely that 15% is from the Norse invasions a thousand years ago. Rest of me came back as 79% Scottish, 4% Irish 2% English

I did one too. I'm from Newcastle Upon Tyne but my DNA is 62% Irish, 32% Scottish and 4% Scandinavian. The Geordie accent also has a lot of slang words in it that have come from Scandivanian countries, particularly influenced when we traded with them on our docks throughout the early to mid 1900s, so Newcastle is also quite heavily merged with Viking history as well as working along side Norwegians and Swedish at the docks. I just still don't understand where I get my easily tanning, non-burning skin from 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Yes, those dna thingys are fascinating! I had mine done for my birthday a few years ago, and turns out I'm almost half English, but also 10% Welsh, 2% Germanic.....and the rest of me is Swedish, Danish AND Norwegian - contributing from both my Mum and Dad's sides of the family. Dad's side of the family is from Yorkshire, so I guess that was prime pillaging territory.Those vikings sure got around lol

I think this is quite a good summary of a very complicated story. I'm a bit strange, since from small childhood I have loved Royal Family trees. ( In spite of being very left-wing.) I can recite them all off pat. But, boy, are they complicated! The picture of Whitby Abbey is misleading. The remains of the Whitby monastery of the period are mere foundations; this is a picture of a structure made in the 1200s-1300s. However, we do have churches built back in the period he was talking about, such as a church I know, Deerhurst in Gloucestershire, built about 780 AD. A commenter is a bit harsh about Henry VIII's settlement in Wales. True, English was made the language of the courts; but he expanded Wales back to what it had originally been, and our Protestant Reformation - in a time when you had to use the official forms of services - made official a Welsh Prayer Book and a Welsh translation of the Bible. Basically, we have had one line of Kings from 927 onward. Charles III holds the throne because he is the direct descendant of Aethelstan's brother, King Edmund the Magnificent. And his Coronation Service was originally written for King Edmund's son, Edgar the Peaceful, in 973...

She is from my part of the world, we also had a viking or two come through our town, nevermind the reglious abbeys all around here. Normans are decended from North men or vikings to you and me, so we ended up ruled by them in the end. Oh and talking of Robin Hood and Richard the Lionheart and the crusades, look up the Knights Templar and find out why friday 13th is unlucky

English is Greek, Latin, Celtic (Kel-tic aka old English), pre-French, Germanic influences due to royal ties. English is far from French but have noticeable inheritance like all the other influences. American is closer to french due to their heavy influence at a more modern time during and after their independence.

Wtf are you on about you muppet. English is not Celtic or Greek. It is a Germanic language just like Dutch or German. It has been 'influenced' by other languages, mostly French but it is still a Germanic language. Celtic languages are a completely different Indo European branch, yes they have also influenced English a bit but for gods sake what a load of rubbish. Also Greek is Hellenic. The origin of a lot of words in modern European languages can be traced to proto Indo European words which means similarities are there between some non-related European language families.

When James the sixth of Scotland became James the first of England 1603 that was the union of the crowns, the acutal political union did not happen till 1701, and was in part a financial bail out by England of the Scots, who had all invested in the Darien Scheme, a plan to plant a colony in the Panama isthmus, which lost 2000 lives and £500,000 scottish pounds, who knows what that would be today, but it almost bankrupted the country.

What the Romans and Seutonius did to the druids and Boudicca (and her poor daughters) was disgusting. Its no wonder Boudicca and the Iceni said "F*** this!" and burned them out. Also, weve been here for 11,000 years and migrated from sunken Doggerland. The Romans arrived, like, 5 minutes ago.

English passeports still have two phrases in French on them : "Dieu et mon droit" (meaning "God and my right"), motto of the monarchy since 15th century. And "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (meaning "Shame on he who thinks evil of it", hoing back to King Edward III, when Norman French was a common language in the UK.). Certain English words have Norman French origins like meat : when cooked : pork, mutton, atvthe table of Lords and pig, sheep when still alive at the farm. Poor farmers were speeking English, while leading people were speaking French

For my money, the best poem (ie mnemonic) to help you remember the Kings and Queens of England/Britain (albeit only from the recent Norman Conquest) is as follows: " "Willie, Willie, Harry, Stee, Harry, Dick, John, Harry three; One two three Neds, Richard two, Harrys four five six, ... then who? Edwards four five, Dick the bad, Harrys (twain),VII VIII Ned six (the lad); Mary, Bessie, James you ken, Then Charlie, Charlie, James again; Will and Mary, Anna Gloria, Georges four,I II III IV Will four, Victoria; Edward seven, George and Ted, George the sixth, now Liz instead." (Written of course, before the sad demise of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II) Easy!
