I’m from Hartlepool and two of the pictures that they used in the video where of our local museum lol made it look a lot fancier than it is. Most of the town is fine but there are some really run down areas there has been a major lack of funding for our police and local hospital just making it a worse place to live than it was when I was younger.

Was about to comment what you said about the old museum, where the ship is. I don’t live there but I’ve been to that museum many times when visiting Hartlepool. My dad’s ashes are scattered out on the sea there. Besides.. I absolutely love the ship and could be more than happy visiting it a bunch more! Haven’t been around the areas where people live so I can’t comment on that. But I love that museum

I live and do KZfaq in Blackpool, it does have lots of bad areas, many unfortunately near the promenade but there’s lots of work going on to improve the town, slowly areas are being redeveloped, more needs to be done to solve many of the social issues Blackpool has in order to become more attractive to visitors but I still feel it’s a fantastic place to visit, plenty to do throughout the year and still has that family friendly atmosphere, very proud of my hometown ❤️ 🗼

I too love in Blackpool and somewhat agree with what you say, however too much funding is centred around improving the town for tourism alone, and completely disregards many residential areas. Places like Central Drive get neglected, the last time I saw regeneration there I was at school. I'm 38 now. Blackpool for me looks nice, however it's a turd rolled in glitter.

I'm from Middlesbrough and its not that its a really bad place to live, it's just lacking in jobs and as a result there is a lot of people out of work. On top of that the whole country is in a housing crisis and we house a large amount of immigrants in the town so getting a house is practically unobtainable for many considering the rise in cost of living.

Many indurstial and agricultural towns that were grubby and run down in the seventies have improved a lot over the decades - Newcastle and Taunton, for example. I went through Middlesborough for the first time in forty years a couple of years ago and, apart from the flyover that has taken a lot of the traffic off the roads, the town appears to have improved little.

Should've seen it before the 70's as I commented further up, Middlesbrough is a historic industry town and flourished and expanded exponentially through the 1800's and 1900's with a very interesting history. It used to look beautiful, had money and the estate I live on was where they planned to build at the time the best airport in England in the 1930's which due to WW2 never came to pass as it ended up being used to build houses. Middlesbrough used to have a great reputation and then seemed to have been abandoned by the government and only just now getting the attention it finally deserves. *Fellow Smoggie who is interested in their hometown*

I lived in Oldham for many years. I was lucky and spent most of that time in the Saddleworth villages. The housing prices were a lot more than Oldham itself but a necessity as Oldham itself was a terrible place to live. My house was burgled whilst we were in bed. We heard their drill and our large dog was trying to get through the living room door to get to them. They still came in despite our bedroom light going on and my dog. We then had our car stolen from our driveway. We also got fed up with sleepless nights due to the Police helicopter and its searchlights. We said that is enough and moved to a smaller house in Saddleworth. After that we moved to Llandudno in North Wales. Having said that the people from Oldham are brilliant and we keep in touch with our Oldham friends. The place is a hotbed of racial problems with some of the countries worse race riots. You stand in the town centre and can hear the call to prayer from the mosques as if you live in the Middle East. I am not racist but changing a town so much that the people who have lived there for generations feel aliens and unwelcome in their own town is taking things too far. Terrible shame for everybody. Unemployment stats aren't accurate. During the early 80's, with Thatcher in charge, the way unemployment was measured changed repeatedly to make it seem like less and less people were unemployed. The youngest age at which you can be classed as unemployed was raised, anyone engaged in education to a certain level was no longer deemed to be unemployed, the level of disability/illness was lowered, and many other measures. Also mothers with babies weren't deemed to be unemployed, but they steadily increased the age (mother with a baby under 6 months, then under 9 months, then under 12 months etc) the child was at which you were deemed to be unemployed... It was all done to appear like more people were employed even though the number of jobs was falling. So, when looking at unemployment figures like "5 million unemployed" that doesn't mean there's like 60 million people with jobs.

Peterborough.... recently had a poke around there on Google Streetview to see what it's like. Seemed a case of lots of old school British stuff like in the pictures, but has lots of modernised stuff, sort of like navigating an American city like Lexington KY or Nashville TN (but without the skyscrapers). Lots of new-build housing estates packed closely together, with short stubby driveways barely just long enough to fit a car on, so nothing like properties built around 1920's through to 1990's/2000's that often had enough driveway space in the front garden and down the side to fit 2 or 3 cars with room to spare.

But one day, I was working on a building site around the corner from where the show was filmed... So, I decided to have a bit of a drive through. I pulled around the corner and the first thing I clocked was... A Rintons Teaman... Yes, we can have tea delivered special, and it's not cheap for the pleasure... And there it was, the little tea van, pulled up and the tea man out and about! :D I just chuckled... I’m from Peterborough. Born and bread! Hit me with your questions! Is it that bad? Well the high street is lacking filled with empty stores and the shopping centre “queens gate” has lost its contacts with its big department stores which makes it pretty disappointing. The town centre is now filled with pubs and chain restaurants. The housing… so many new houses being built left right and centre. The have recently taken away our “east of England show ground’ - home of the speedway. And many big events. To be turned into a new housing estate. The houses are expensive and this due to the easy commute into London only taking 45 minutes via train. I live in a small market town on the edge of Peterborough called crowland home to some pretty historic sites. Included crowland abbey and the triangle bridge built in 1390.

The town does have its run down areas but recently it had a lot of funding and there is a lot of work happening. My friend that grew up here came back recently and thought he got off at the wrong stop because the town centre looks completely different. The major issue tho is its a holiday resort town and thousands of tourists used to come all summer and autumn for the illumination. Because of the bad press not many come anymore.

Like all towns, it had its "nice bits" though, and I wish I could drive through this Christmas and see the Blackpool Illuminations again this year. They're pretty good. Having said this, the city next to the town I grew up in in the US was well known for gang warfare, while at the same time also being known for many positive aspects. Depended on what part of town you were talking about. These things are almost too subjective. Also, they can change very fast. Expect this list to change VERY fast now as home buyers are forced to buy in "cheaper" locations and gentrify them swiftly.

I’m from Rochdale, an old mill town like our neighbours Oldham. Both towns on the side of the Pennines are surrounded by the most beautiful countryside for hiking and camping, however, In the 60s and 70s there was a massive increase of people from the Indian continent to work in the mills. Unfortunately by the 80 s the mills were shutting and they became marginalised. They did struggle to merge with the English way of life. Unfortunately towns like Rochdale and Oldham have had terrible press about young Aisian gangs being involved child grooming and organised gangs. On saying all that young English males are also disadvantaged through lack of opportunities leading to their anti- social activities. I don’t agree that all immigrants are bad the Asian community have opened corner shops, drive our taxis and have brought their food to our towns, making them a big part of our community

I'm in bispham so I'm also 10 mins outside of Blackpool I work for Blackpool transport so I go into town everyday and I think its slowly getting better. Central drive, Dale St and bond Street all need help. I know abingdon Street and Queen Street has just had a grant to fix the dilapidated buildings. Abingdon St Market is pretty good now tho

My hometown always makes it to the top of these lists - the only real achievement it has is being the worst place. It also has a really bad smell overall which you notice getting off the train. That’s if you choose to visit for some reason. It’s not all bad, some good parts but they are definitely rare. It’s just dirty, full of potholes, drugs and crimes. A lot of people’s dream is just to have kids and get benefits. It does have a lot of good transport links though which makes it useful to escape for a while before being sucked back in 😂

The thing is based on statistics. I doubt the unemployment rate in London is low, and it houses some of the wealthiest people in the world. There is plenty of diverse culture, and there is certainly plenty to do. The crime rate is probably fairly high, but so is the density of population. Also when you say "London" do you mean "the city?" If so, it is a great place. Or do you mean London as a whole? Which is built up of lots of towns and villages, more of a county than a town or city.

Haha you’ve got to love the butt-hurt Northerners who still like to insist that London (an entire county) is worse than their little town. Statistics don’t lie. Too many Daily Mail readers believe everything they read in the papers, bless.

One advantage for non-UK residents watching videos like this, is that it at least gives you information on how to pronounce British place names, but don't take the content seriously, because it's 100% opinionated crap! The truth is there are good and bad areas in the majority of British towns due to the amount of mixed income brackets and age of housing stock. Some towns are more run down than other due to being closer to out of town shopping malls that attract the more affluent which has a knock on effect to the towns smaller business. Gravesend for instance grew up to a large size because the amount of Thames docks that have subsequently closed and the amount of people that worked on the river declined. Gravesend got its name from where the black death plague was eventually stopped as it spread from London as quarantines eventually worked. Eventually it became a Victorian day trip from London destination for the large gardens and tea rooms it had. It has suffered a decline but I would say no more than a lot of other Kent towns.

P'boro was ruined in the early 80's all the historic nature was destroyed by pedestrianising the town centre and building massive amounts of look a like housing all around the outskirts like Paston...all of its soul was destroyed. Add the huge amount of immigrants, lack of decent industry and it's vastness with nothing to do and it really is an awful place to live. Once my parents passed I have never went back. 😶

According to The Spectator (a political magazine), the UK is poorer than 49 of the 50 US States except Mississippi. The average pay in the UK is £34,953 (roughly $44,500) a year. The average pay in the US is $50,000-$100,000 (roughly £39,250-£78,500 depending on state. On average, Americans work harder for their money - 2 weeks’ paid holiday a year (4 weeks in the UK), no maternity pay but depends on employer, (in the UK it’s 39 weeks 90% of your average weekly earnings), increased healthcare charges in the USA & college education is cheaper. The main reasons for the gap are that housing costs are much higher, British workers’ pay has been savaged by globalisation, particularly in rust belt towns shown here & advances in tech not yet experienced by the USA (although you are catching up) & the UK’s North/South divide. The South, particularly London, is more affluent & most of the jobs are there but housing is unaffordable especially for young people as it is overcrowded. Another issue in Britain is the railway transport links & the complete lack of interest by any political party in driving business to the North of England. Both main parties are all talk and no action on this issue and don’t have a clue about transport.

Corby is notorious. many of it's residents were scottish steel workers who moved there. Another town with high unemployment and high poverty levels. I used to work as a mortgage underwriter and we got a lot of applications from Corby, from people desperate to move elsewhere. We had to decline almost all of them since they all had County Court judgements, arrears and defaults on loans/cards against them. Lots of people trapped there, desperate to move somewhere better, but unable to do so due to poverty and bad credit records.☹

I was born in Hartlepool. As someone has previously stated, some of those photos were of the The Historic Quay Naval Museum. Hartlepool used to have Blast furnesses, Steel Smelting, rolling & forming, along with ship building. Hartlepool was the primary shipping port for the export of coal from the local coal mines in County Durham. Oil/Gas Deep sea Platform production. Steel production Industries Gone Ship Building Gone. Coal Mining in the surrounding area Gone. Hartlepool was until 1974 part of county Durham. Then with formation of a new district area designated as Cleveland. When the district of Cleveland was dissolved. Other parts of that district went back to being part of their previous districts/areas. Hartlepool did not. This has cut off a lot of funding & regeneration help. Hartlepool would have gone back under the jurisdiction of County Durham. the Borough Councillors of Hartlepool didn't want give up it's little theifdom. This has also screwed up the NHS in the area so funds for the Hospital went to nearby towns.
