I'm 18 miles North of Whitby. The coastline up here is lovely. When the storm tides wash sand away, it reveals a prehistoric forest that is preserved by the sand and water. It's what used to stretch from here to Norway

@@JJLAReacts It's beautiful. Staithes is next up from there and where Captain Cook learned his trade. Next up from there is Saltburn which is stunning. My village of Marske is next and has viking settlement remnants and appeared in the Domesday Book. It's an unbelievable place and full of Viking attacks all the way up to Northumberland

@@JJLAReacts You should check out a or some vids on the 'Waddenzee' or 'Waddensea' in the Netherlands, you can (and I have) walk from the mainland to the islands whenever the tide is low (well some of the islands at least). Much like at Mont Saint Michel in France. You gotta hurry to make it across tho, cause the water comes back in very fast. But nowhere on earth will you have such a broad panorama and big sky (not even in Texas) as on the plains of the Waddenzee, well except on top of a mountain of course.

Not just wind power being built. There's an experiment between Orkney and mainland Scotland trying to harness the immense tidal forces that go between the atlantic and north sea. If it proves reliable and scalable that's a huge amount of predictable energy.

I was expecting it to be rather boring, but it was far from it. I found it fascinating! For most people I think we don't spend much time thinking about the North Sea other than just acknowledging that it's there. Occasional news reports of some disaster or other bring it to mind, but this video demonstrated its historic importance to a whole new level. Thanks JJ!

The North Sea coast of the UK is one of the fastest eroding coasts in the world with towns and villages collapsing into the sea as cliffs collapse. The Hornsea wind farm is enormous with them visible from shore. The blades are made locally and are 75 to 125m in length. A whole new industry has sprung up around this.

The North Sea in a UK/British Isles perspective is in/on the Eastern coast. France can be seen on a clear day from the south of England looking over the English Channel or Le Manche as the French call it. The English Channel is the busiest shipping lane in the world with over 500 ships a day passing through the Straights of Dover.

Apart from Doggerland*, we (the UK), lost the Heligoland archipelago too ! It was once Dutch, but became the possession of the UK (from 1807 to 1890). Britain ruled it because of it's important naval position, especially because it protected 'activity' from any French 'aggression', but then we gave it to Germany... It then became a place for writers, artists and many Bohemian types to frequent. One of the least visited places in Europe, but strangely a great place to visit for a quiet break! I'm in London and have had several 'weekends away"' there. Nothing to do, but relax and eat. 😊 *You might want to 'search' Dogger Bank archaeology.... Because it's SO shallow in comparison to anywhere else in the North Sea and was the main connection between the UK and Europe, it is proving to be a treasure trove of artifacts. 😊

The Hanseatic League (HL) is mentioned in this video and I think the majority of people in the UK are not aware of it!? Yet it is STILL around after 400 years (now called Hansa). The three main Engliish ports that earned money through this economic trade route were London, Boston and King's Lynn. KL still has an historical Hanseatic League 'merchants house'. The HL was the biggest trading route in Europe, selling goods between England, Denmark, Germany, Russia and all over Europe. Long before the EEC, it was VERY important to Lincolnshire (the Boston port), because their woollen cloth trade relied on it massively. It cannot be stressed how important the HL was. German and English traders shipped goods with protection from piracy across the North Sea for hundreds of years. Please DO search out the HL and Hansa, it might just 'blow your mind' about this (mainly) 13th to 17th century alliance! 😊

France doesn't really extend far enough north to the North Sea. It's the Channel (in French - la Manche) and I have never heard or seen anything about a "North Sea" in their language. It's only - la Manche, l'Atlantique, and la Med. (the three seas which surround their country). The word "Nordzee" you'll see everywhere in the low countries, so it's safe to say that the North Sea starts with Belgium and runs north. How far north it goes, I'm not sure (that's a bit out of my zone). But the West of Scotland is the Atlantic, and the sea between UK and Ireland is the Irish Sea.
