In this video I react to the top 10 British TV shows that Americans are obsessed with. I've heard of a numbers of these, but I've only seen one of them, which was black mirror. I love that TV show, but never even knew it was British. A few of these look really good and they're going on my watch list. I think Peaky Blinders may actually be binge worthy, is it as good as it looks?
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

Downton Abbey is not just about the the aristocratic family, there is also a huge story line around the servants and their lives and problems. It starts with the run-up to WW1 and ends just before WW2. After the TV series ended the story was continued in films.

is it based on a book? Downton Abbey I mean. The original series at least idk about later ones. I've not seen it but it sounds like the kind of thing that starts as a book, gets picked up and a series made loosely based on the book and then goes on to create it's own storylines and lore etc. A bit like that "Call the Midwife" or whatever it was called, that was on the BBC ~2010 ish iirc? That was based on a book originally, that I believe was semi-autobiographical of the original lead character (I remember my now late Grandma reading the books before the TV series) and was centred around a young nurse-midwife based in a poverty stricken and deprived part of London in the postwar era, into early 1950s. I ^think^ there were 3 books penned by the original author, but they carried on the series after the protagonist left, did a sort of 'soft reset' and carried it going for quite a while I think, just writing their own storylines rather than based from the book. I only really know that much because of my Grandma reading the books and visiting family often enough when it was on that I passively absorbed some of it!!! I'm sure there are many more examples

Python’s was the show to watch and everyone of a certain age can quote a line from a Python’s sketch, e.g “this parrot has ceased to be, it has moved on and gone to meets its maker”. My step mother was the producer’s assistant on the show, so I have loads of bits and pieces from the production and a signed book by the Python’s cast.

@Tymbus

@@FunkyNige I watched the show when first broadcast and when my parents would let me. I think a lot of its appeal was that it outraged the older generation by just being incoherent nonsense. Like a lot of kids at the time, I bought the LPs,(no VHS, DVDs or even many repeats in the UK) so we got the best stuff. The show worked well for sound only and my brother memorised entire sketches - I think that's why people my age (60+) can still remember lines from the show. The Lps were hysterical and my brother and I played them endlessly

"Killing Eve" started before this list was made, but would be on there now as it was huge in America. A spy thriller but with comedy/drama/horror elements, and launched the Hollywood career of Jodie Comer. Luther and Peaky Blinders are both excellent - I've researched my family history and discovered that my Great Grandfather originated from Birmingham. I didn't have a clue as he died a long time before I was born and my grandfather never spoke of his parents. My Great Grandfather was raised in the Jewelery Quarter and Small Heath area of Birmingham and moved down to Devon in 1901. The first series of Peaky Blinders is set in Small Heath in 1919, so it gave me a really good view on how the family lived up there.

My favourites are Sherlock(it’s clever) and Doctor Who. Dr. who has been going since the early 60s the first clip you saw was an early one so not really relevant but then there was a long gap and those are much better especially with David Tennant The Doctor regenerates so a lot of actors get to play him. The Doctor has always been a beacon of compassion and empathy starting from the very beginning. It’s a show of great empathy, humanity and tolerance and always has been, right from the start. One great thing about British TV is that their seasons (or series as they call them) only run from about 4 - 10 episodes long. They do this so that actors can work in many different productions. As Americans, we can view some on regular TV (Doctor Who, Downton Abby, etc). However, there are an even wider range of British TV shows available via Acorn & Britbox streaming services. You can find tons of dramas, comedies, documentaries on both. Acorn: Line of Duty, Blood, London Kills. Documentaries: Murder Maps, Inside the Bank of England, Walking Tudor England, Britain's Bloodiest Dynasty, Tales of Irish Castles, and many more Britbox: Suspect, Vera, Shetland, Wallander, Line of Duty, and all of Agatha Christie adaptations. Documentaries: Murder Case, In the Footsteps of Killers, Catching the Game Show Killer, Lennon's Last Weekend, Britain's Secret Treasures, A History of Ancient Britain, plus many on the Royal Family. There is an Irish sitcom that you should watch. It is definitely hilarious. It is called Mrs. Brown's Boys. You can find the episodes & specials on Britbox. You can also find clips on KZfaq.

Dr Who, yes! Plus it's spin off Torchwood. Monty python's flying Circus is a must. However, my current favourite is a Netflix series, The Last Kingdom, based on the books by Bernard Cornwell. Set in the time off King Alfred and the Danes, you have a sweeping historical series that blends fact with real and a few imagined characters. There were two recent TV shows that I liked, the first is called 'Fearless' (a crime show) it has only one season so you wouldn't get bogged down into watching four or five seasons as you would with other TV shows. The leading actress Helen McCrory was great. She also played in Peaky Blinders so if you watch Peaky Blinders you will get to know her. Unfottunately, Helen McCrory has now passed away. Be careful, there is also a Netflix TV series called 'Fearless' which is completely different. The British 'Fearless' has Helen McCrory. The other recent show I liked also has only one season, it's called 'The Loch' (another crime show). It takes place in Loch Ness in Scotland. I liked it not only for the story and the characters but also for the scenery of Loch Ness. Another show which came out in the late 1960s (yet in some ways seems timeless and has a strong cult following) is 'The Prisoner' with the actor Patrick McGoohan (also only one season). It has a typical 'English' feel to it. It was filmed in Port Meirion and every year loyal fans go there to meet up for a celebration. If you like the look of the Port Meirion in this TV show you could always visit it on your journey around Britain. There was also an American copy of this show, although they changed many things, the American version was also called 'The Prisoner' and takes place in the desert, completely different. As for Doctor Who, I prefer the original Doctor Who shows (the first two doctors especially but the third and fourth were also good) but that's just my personal opinion. If you can, try to watch the very first episode of Doctor Who called 'The Unearthly Child'. It's in black and white and came out in (November)1963, but just this one episode would be a good starter for you. It's how it all begins. I hope you get to see these shows, but as you say, it can be time consuming, however, in my humble opinion, they are good shows.

Peaky Blinders is gritty and violent but that said you are fully invested in the central family who are the gangsters and it makes for compulsive viewing. Downton Abbey is equally brilliant in a completely different way following the lives of the aristocratic family above stairs and the servants below stairs. Monty Python's Flying Circus is the name of the show, very much of its time but an icon of British TV. Ground breaking at the time. Merlin is an adaptation of the British legend of King Arthur. Never heard of Catastrophe.

Most big Irish TV shows are co productions with British, Father Ted, Derry Girls, Mrs Brown's Boys wouldn't have seen the light of day without backing from CH4 or BBC and also because of population being much bigger in the UK they become very big hits.

Luther is excellent. It might have you checking under your bed ... if you've seen it, you'll know the episode ... Peaky Blinders : you may benefit from using the subtitles to begin with. It's based in the UK's West Midlands (where I'm from) and their accent might be a bit awkward if you're not familiar with. Mothy Python : is very abstract comedy

Peaky Blinders is in my top 3 shows of all time. 6 seasons of 6 episodes and a movie due to be filmed this year to finish it off so perfect time to catch up on it. It did take me 3 attempts to get into the show, I just wasn't in the right head space first 2 times for it then 3rd time I ended up binging it all. It is on netflix in America

The modern Who reboot is one of those shows where investment in the early, lower budget and sillier episodes is very much rewarded by the depth and ambition of the show once it finds its feet. Merlin - I doubt you'd enjoy. I liked it, but it's quite campy and of its time and didn't really get the chance to develop the kind of depth it hinted at

Judging from reviews on the American Amazon site, there are several other British series that have gone down very well with American viewers, whether it be through pay tv, streaming services or DVD box set purchases. For example: 'Vera' a brilliant police procedural set in the photogenic North East England, featuring Brenda Blethyn as the irascible, calculating and dischevelled Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, a nearly retired police officer, obsessive about her work and her team. Has a certain 'Columbo' feel. Based on the top notch detective stories written by Ann Cleeves. 'Doc Martin'. Starring Martin Clunes and an ensemble cast, a much loved, offbeat and quirky story of a brilliant London surgeon with Aspergers and a blood phobia, who decides to give up surgery, and try General Practise in a small seaside town in Cornwall that he knows from childhood visits. There have been half a dozen international copies of the format. Has a certain 'Northern Exposure' vibe.

Oooohw, The Face of Boe, a big face in a jar and yet so much more meaning behind this short clip. As always, the writers of Doctor Who manage to give simple things a deeper meaning, traveling through time and space, meeting people from history (Things my children learned and impressed their teachers in school because of this show) or stories from another world were we still can relate to. I hope you give Doctor Who a chance. It's the best family sci-fi show in the Whoniverse. As others stated, either watch blink to get the geste of the show (timetravel) or just dive in with 'Rose' and see beyond the low budget how much fun sci-fi can be. Alons-y.

I tried to watch the first few episodes of Peaky Blinders when it was first aired in late 2013 it did nothing for me at the time and didn't bother continuing with it, then back in 2020 I decided to give it another go, due to hype and word of mouth from friends and family. I got hooked on it now I believe it to be one of the best British TV shows out there. My favourite is Midsomer Murders, the old ones with John Nettles, its a "Who Done it - detective Drama" type show that is well written, intelligent, well acted and keeps you guessing till the last few minutes.
