Bathurst 1000, is a 6 hour/1000klm (161 laps) endurance race. Each car has 2 drivers and each driver must complete a minimum amount of laps/hours in the car. This race is held in October, which is the second month of our Spring weather, leading into Summer in December. This race is televised globally. The person in the video is Mark Larkham, former Super Car driver and now commentator, who specialises in explaining the technical side of the race as shown in the video, and also, explains in detail the various parts of the race cars parts, fuel and equipment throughout the race. Last year the broadcasting station had dropped Mark Larkham from the commentary team for the 2021 race, but such uproar from motor racing fans about him being dropped, the decision was reversed and he was back in his normal commentary job - the power of SuperCar race fans.

I think what alot of people dont understand about Bathurst if they have never watched it, is the fact that the majority of the track is blind corners and the approach speed into them is insane. Keep that in mind with concrete walls on each side, and the elevation from the top of the mountain to the bottom is almost too steep to physically walk up the top. Using meters to feet converter, the elevation from pit lane to the top of the mountain is 2950 feet. This is a good vid to watch kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtGcfsyo35-YZXU.html

No room for error as you weave through concrete walls, through the grate, the cutting, skyline, snake your way down through the dipper, defend on Conrod straight, try to hit the chase just right. This is where the term "King of the Mountain" comes from! And decades of Holden v Ford battles, all the Mad Max (Road Warrior) cars fighting it out. If I remember correctly (and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong) to enter the great race, 500 of that type of car had to be sold on the street to enter in the race. It became so competitive that Holden released a car called the Torana LJ GTR XU1, whose power to weight ratio exceeded all limits in countries with laws about such things, fudged the 'sold' figures (only 150 sold), and won the race. It started racing legend Peter Brock's unbeaten record of nine Bathurst victories. He is known as the "King of the Mountain". The race had and has, a massive impact on car sales in Australia. Mustang has done well by its first win in 2019. It will be interesting to see what happens to Camaro. And btw, there is a bit of a background to that vid, Mark Larkham, a racing crowd favourite for his knowledge and passion, was fired/relieved by Channel 10 who had sole rights of the coverage. However an audience backlash ensured that he was reinstated, and his superior was removed. I love Bathurst, controversy and collision at every turn.

Not entirely correct. Amongst the early winners of thr 500 race were Ford Cortina GT500's developed by Harry Firth (later HDT) These weere based on the UK Lotus Cortina. Then in 1966 the mighty Morris Cooper S's killed everything with their lightness and handling filling nine places in top 15. So specialied marques were produced and homologated before the LC GTR / LJ XU1.

I grew up about 2 hours east of Bathurst and spent quite a bit of time in the town, I went to the race quite a few times in my teens and early 20's, it's a magical place. TV doesn't do justice to how steep it is. Also, not mentioned in this video, when it rains at Bathurst it really rains, yet the track can be that the bottom of the track is dry but the top of half is pelting down with rain and hail. The current V8 Supercar series doesn't quite have the same appeal to me as it did back in the day, but Bathurst is a must watch every year, it's one of those events I reckon anyone who is a motorsport fan should check out at least once in their lifetime.

You should check out some of the old races from the late 60s and early 70s when they drove tye Ford Falcon 351 GTHO and Holden Monaro 350 GTS that weren't too different to what the public could buy from their local dealer. Recirculating -ball suspension, rubber bushes, live rear axles on leaf springs and skinny cross-ply tyres made them handle as precisly as a river barge, and tiny single-piston front discs and rear drum brakes that were barely adequate on a road car, which would badly fade after just a handful of laps and the pedal going straight to the floor trying to pull up from 160mph at the end of Conrod Straight They may not have been quite as fast as a modern V8 Supercar, but boy you needed a big pair to drive them!

Larko is a legend. He may not have the history of wins like a Johnson or a Skaife, but in 1999 he claimed pole, and that puts him high up in a very elite list of racers. And he is a genius with a microphone. Long may he reign.

In the late 60's till now, I recall families would pick there spot in there lounge rooms and be glued for the day. The phone doesn't get answered so don't call. Commercial breaks are a race to the toilet. Mum makes the Tea, and feeds the hordes. Kids don't fight with each other or they are kicked out. You're either Ford or Holden. Blue or Red. OH and we pronounce it Bathist

Been to the Bathurst 1000 a few times and it is an awesome race that engulfs a whole week and tv does not do justice to the track and how steep the track is how blind the corners are and how not flat the pit straight isn't. I love the place I watch the race every year even if I can't make it to the race itself. There are some really cracking characters on the mount. The rumble of the engines as the cars get close to where you sitting is awesome. Melbourne cup doesn't stop the nation but the Bathurst 1000 does and there isn't a sole in the country that doesn't sit down to watch that one race every year. There is no other race track in the world that can compare to Bathurst it's a roller coaster bare knuckle race that will chew you up and spit you out if you get even a tiny bit wrong. It's an unforgiving track and drivers from all over the world want to drive at the track. Some are lucky to experience it and the rest only wish they could. It's taken some of the best overseas drivers from all over the world and spat the out. Got to respect the track coz it can throw anything and everything at you at anytime thru out the race. From rain on the Mount to sun in pit straight to kangaroos jumping in front of your car on the fastest parts of the track.

I was born in Bathurst and lived 4km from the track. When I was about 8 or 9 I would walk up to the track to watch the races. As it is a public road when not closed for races I would ride my push bike around the track and once I had a motor cycle I would often ride around this wonderful pics of road way it is tempting to try your luck but the speed limit is 60Km/h and it doesn't pay to speed because the cops patrol it a lot.

This magnificent race is held on a Sunday and as you saw it is 20 to 30 cars battling 161 laps to be crowned that years King of the Mountain, but on Saturday afternoon the first 10 positions are determined in the Top 10 shootout. If you want to see more then search "Bathurst Top 10 Shootout and ride with the 10 fastest as they are released one at a time to do that FASTEST flying lap they can piece together.

BTW, this race is on a PUBLIC ROAD, it isn't a dedicated track. The driving is done between 2 drivers, which is one of the main drivers who drive in the Aus version of nascar, and they generally run with a driver from one of the lower tiers of the comp. The main driver with drive 75% of the load. Oh and this race runs RAIN, HAIL or SHINE, with kangaroos invading the strip.

I'm in New Zealand and I did visit Bathurst once on a trip to Aus but it wasn't during the racing season unfortunately. It is the biggest race on TV down here in New Zealand and Australia, there's about 5 days of build up to it and it's raced on Sunday and you have to dedicate your whole Sunday to it. The guy commenting on the video is a retired driver so knows the track and how to drive it. The track by the way IS A PUBLIC ROAD. I was a big NASCAR fan when Dale Earnhardt was alive but even that can't beat Bathurst. Oh, and many of the drivers are Kiwi's, they do race in New Zealand (Bathurst is one race of a whole season) and I have met most of the drivers.

The origin of the race was called the Armstrong 500. The cars were virtually straight off the showroom floor. They developed over the years as Ford and General Motors Holden (GMH) produced a limited number of vehicles each year to race at Bathurst. This was called the homologation required to be eligible to make them production cars for racing in the series. In the early years raced things like Ford Cortina's, Datsun's Isuzu Bellet's and other vehicles sold in Australia. The later cars, Fords were the Falcon GT's and Holden GTS Monaro's Chrysler had the Valiant Charger's (they started with a straight six 265 ci and triple Webber's ) in the late sixties and seventies, then later the Torana's six cylinders at first ,later ones were vee eights (five litre) and then went to the Commodore's. One of the features before the race is the top ten shoot out for position on the start line.

I totally agree that it is one of the great race tracks but it was better in1959 when I rode there. Wal Martin of Newcastle prepared my 350 BSA for my first road race, where I drew a grid number in the middle of the field and came through for 3rd place and fastest lap. I am 85 now and may not have a lot of time to blow my own trumpet. In that race Jack Sullings a fellow Mayfield club member fell in the esses trying to avoid a rider pushing a bike. Unfortunately Jack lost a finger and before going to hospital told his mechanic the get me to ride for him in the 500 Clubmans in the afternoon, one stipulation, I had to win. I got a very good start going up the outside on the grass to be in second spot up mountain straight, I was able to pass that rider before the cutting and rode on through a storm mid race, to win by over a minute , with fastest lap from Snow Wheatley of Newcastle who thought that he had won because he could not see anyone in front of him. May field Club won the Teams Trophy as Peter Wilson had got a second in Clubman A . I was awarded the Norton Trophy for best performance by a Clubman rider. The track was like a country road ,no smoothed out gradients like now and McPhillamy Park bend was a bend and there was no concrete as I can remember. Times move on but the car crowd have a lot to answer for, in destroying it for safe motor cycle racing. Too much concrete ,Such is commerce. Bikes originally built the Easter event and cars were secondary !
@warrenbridges1891
@warrenbridges1891 2 жыл бұрын
I used to watch them race motorcycles here every Easter back in the '70s. It started getting too dangerous with all the new concrete barriers. Saw a sidecar passenger die right in front of me. Got it all on 35 mm SLR chemical processing. Put the camera down and thought FUCK!!!. He got smacked in the head while crawling on his hands and knees across the track. I'll never forget it. They never had the chase back then. Bikes used to come over the last hump with their front wheel in the air. Trying to get the front wheel down before hitting the anchors. Seen so many guys sailing up the escape road towards Bathurst. Scary place.

A little while ago you reacted to Aussie inventions and Racecam was mentioned. This was the race for which they invented Racecam. In the late 70's they were mounting a massive camera inside the car and tracking the car with a helicopter that was receiving the video feed. I have , like many Aussies, walked this circuit. Words cannot describe the steepness of the drop off when you are walking it, I cannot imagine what if feels like at race speed.

It's a track with a grand history and some absolutely crazy crashes. Absolutely no room for error. As for the dipper TV doesn't do it any credit it's sort of like La Saga's chicane except there's no runoff's just concrete walls and it's literally a drop off. Definitely worth checking out it's history they were crazy around that course back in the 60's 70's and 80's

THe Bathurst 1000 is Australias version of the Indianapolis 600. Its the Pinnacle of Australian Motorsport. I highly recommend watching the highlight reel of Bathurst 1000 1991. Group A racing: Holden V8's Ford Sierra Turbos, Nissan GTR and other cars in different classes. TV doesn't capture the altitude change. I have been to the Bathurst 1000 many times from 2010 to present. Its about a 3hr drive from Sydney. They also hold (in Febuary) the Bathurst 12hr which is a race of GT cars (Porsche 911 GT3, Audi R8, Mercedes AMG GT, Ferrari, McLaren, etc. During Easter they hold the 6hr which is a production vehicle event. All of which are spectacles to watch
