It was at Mt Panorama that the I car tv camera was invented The engineers at Australia’s channel 7 devised it. They had to have a helicopter flying directly above the car carrying the camera. There was a executi ve from one of the US networks waiting at Sydney’s airport for his flight back to the USA He saw this race starting on the tv in the passenger lounge and was so stunned by the in car pictures and the commentary during the race from the driver he cancelled his flight to the USA and got himself on a plane to Bathurst. There, he did a deal with channel 7 to licence the technology in the USA
@robossuperchannel9434

CBS in the US developed the first in- car camera which debuted at the 1979 Daytona 500. Later the same year Channel 7 debuted their camera for the Hardie Ferodo 1000. The Channel 7 system was superior, but it would not be until 1981 that CBS licenced the technology. It is not clear where the myth started that Channel 7 was the first - 7 was the best but not the first.

@@robossuperchannel9434 I dont know where it started, but I heard this on Channel 7. However it came about, it changed motorsport for me. Suddenly I found it was a fascinating TV spectacle. I thought the most amazing scene was when Dick Johnson was commenting from his race car roaring down Conrod Straight at what seemed like 500km/h, and chatting almost casually across Australia to Fremantle, to Ian Murray and the America's cup team on board the yacht off Fremantle. At both ends of the link, the race was under way and this was all going on from the races!!

The narrator was Mark Larkham racer and also was a team owner. He raced open wheelers and the V8 supercars. As an aside there are only two races that matter in Australia. Three if you ride bikes. The first is the Melbourne Cup for horses...which is a public holiday. The second is Bathurst 100 and the bike race is Phillip iSland GP for the bikes Perhaps you should watch a crash compilation of the Isle of Mann TT. Its been run yearly for around 108 years and something like 260 riders have been killed.and spectators for that matter. Its only for motorcycles and outfits, held on public roads through the towns and out in the country. Its about 26 miles long. The course is lined with stone walls in the town and stone fences and barbed wire fences in the country. Bikes have been clocked at 230 mph. Average speed is 138 mph. Its NOT a race as the riders are sent out at 10 second intervals. The fastest overall time wins.

Not a sports fan. This race closes off local roads and takes them over, until after the race. After, you can drive them at 60k, normal legal speed. You guys were all fired up, and that was only one lap, these guys drive in shifts, for hours. At any time each one can mess it all up. The race is in october. You just heard a pep talk aimed at his drivers, he retired from driving, now owns a team.

Extra notes with that first corner is this is absolutely an endurance race, at the fastest track of the season. So that first turn at Hell Corner is done on cold tyres, with a full tank of petrol, and they stretch the gear ratios out for this race to account for the higher average speeds - so working a cold clutch from a standing start is an art form in itself. It's a remarkable thing to watch.

My friend used to work for one of the teams, Bathurst was always the one they wanted to win the most. If you guys watched more, trust me you will be hooked. Great video guys, good to see your reactions and perspective on the Great Race at Bathurst. If you want to see how a NASCAR legend reacts to being driven on a hot lap around Mount Panorama, you should check out Daryl Waltrips experience when he visited Bathurst a few years ago. Very funny seeing him react to the twists and turns as he experienced the race track as a passenger. Cheers, Rod

I agree 100% with you Rod, it's one of the coolest videos on KZfaq! Never seen a Nascar driver shit his pants like Daryl did as a passenger around The Mountain. I drive Challenge Bathurst every year and race my own car with no roll cage for 6x20 minute sessions over a weekend. It's a state level racing event and adrenaline at its best. An invite only event held over 4 days late in November and for a club level racer like me it's nothing short of a privilege to drive a road registered car in anger around what can only be described as the pinnacle of Aussie Motorsport 🏁

This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen and I really enjoyed it. I agree, their balls are made of steel. My son-in-law is a V8 Supercar driver and this race is ‘the one’ they all look forward to, it’s in their blood. There’s nothing like the sound that you hear standing track side as each car passes. The main race this year is on the 8th of October. I have driven a supercar (5 laps) at Eastern Creek before he meet my daughter and I thought that was awesome. But then he took me on a double hot lap (two laps of the same circuit that I had already driven with him as the driver), he had total control at speed in the wet (it was raining), the G forces were unbelievable and it was to awesome for words just like the grandchildren he gave me 😊

Mark Larkham who is commentating is an ex v8 supercars driver which is why he can explain so graphically. He's done this shit many times. And yes, Mt Panorama is 1 of the most difficult tracks on the globe if not the most! The vision doesn't do it justice to how extreme it is. This is why Aussie drivers reaching this level do so well in Nascar and other motorsports.

The guy in the video has raced Bathurst many times and has been a commentator for the race for many years. He is the best I've heard. He can watch live footage of under the car only seeing the back wheel while it's doing a lap of the track and can tell you exactly where they are, what speed, braking, accelerating, position, what they should be doing. Every driver needs to know this track very well to make it around. They sometimes take people as passanges around the track on hotlaps. Most people go pale when they reach the top and they can't see the road anymore. International drivers come over to co-drive. It takes a few goes to be fast and finish the race. We love watching every year. The TV is on all weekend. It's by far the best race in Australia.

In the 1970's I was a flag marshall at The Mountain and Amaroo. The mountain is also a 600 foot climb, and back then there was no Caltex Chase, Conrod Straight was aptly named. In those days there were 4 categories and around 60 cars I think, the world's fastest 4 door sedan at the time, the GTHO Phase 3 Falcon constantly trying to get around the bricks, like the Mini Cooper S and everything in between. Lunch was delivered before the race started, frozen Kentucky Fried chicken, when Murray Carter blew his conrods we tried to get him to park it closer, to warm up our lunch on his bonnet. He was in no mood to take any notice of us.

One thing to remember that at one part they cannot even see the track from the dip to the right. This race was originally set that they would race on Sunday and sell from showrooms Monday. There is a story of one of the teams breaking down when driving the race car from Sydney to Bathurst. They got the Holden car dealer in the town to open up and the drive off in a similar off the showroom flor.

Even people who don’t follow cars know and follow the Bathurst 1000 here. Those first couple corners that CAN kill you, is for a reason. Men have died doing this race. You were right to cringe at some of those crashes. The technology has come amazingly far over the years though, and seeing the guys literally get out and walk away from some of these smashes is incredible. On top of everything else described in the clip, the drivers also have to worry about wildlife. I remember a driver hitting a kangaroo a few years back in the middle of the race. Car basically exploded. If you want to see more have a look at some of the crash compilations. And if you want to see one of our biggest Bathurst legends, check out Peter Brock. Glad you enjoyed this one guys. 😁

It’s a public road and to drive around the circuit any other day is a real eye opener. It’s not a hill climb, it’s so steep on the way up but on the way down there are corners you can not see over the bonnet. They are doing blistering speeds into and through sections that are so scetchy, even at 60 km an hour. To actually see the course is when I truly understood how serious Mt Panorama is. It’s an amazing place to visit.

at 14:22, I think there was one driver only a few years back that successfully pulled off the perfect overtake there. While the guy in front was taking it easy, he came in RED HOT and locked up his wheels in a huge bloom of smoke to slip into that tiny little gap and successfully pulled in front without causing an accident and took the lead and kept going. There is footage on youtube somewhere.

It was originally a public road. No road just gravel. It began then. Following that the motorcycles hit the track! Exciting and dangerous with no barriers. As vehicles got faster the bikes left the scene and 4wheels became the the formula to take on the mountain. The glory days saw Mini Coopers dancing through the turns, up against the new muscle of Holden and Ford conquering the longer faster sections. Fast forward for the next 60 plus years and the evolution of the Holden and Ford Supercars took centre stage on the mountain and immortalised the Bathurst 1000 in the hearts of Aussie racing fans, and eventually the world. ❤

So guys, some reference for you, the track is 6.2ish Kliomiters long,(3.9 miles) the elevation change is 174 meters (571ft) from grid to highest point on the track and when they are not racing it is a two way public road and the speed limit is 60 kph (37 mph) and having lived close to the track for most of my life, some of those corners the race cars are taking at 150 kph seem hard at 60 kph in a street car. Larko, the commentator knows his stuff but having been an official at many races he is a bit full of himself but generally not a bad bloke. Many years ago they used to hold bike races there at easter but as the bikes got faster they soon realised that because of the limited runoff areas on the track, it was no longer safe. If you ever get to Australia, hire a car from Sydney, drive over the blue mountains for about 3 hours and have a drive around the track, as I said, public road so stick the the speed limit because the cops do like to sit at the bottom of conrod straight and issue speeding tickets like confetti 🙂
