I'm surprised Jay didn't make more of the fact that there's also an area of London called Borough, with a tube station of the same name and most famous for Borough Market, the chicest place to be seen paying $20 for a loaf of bread if that's your thing. Hi. As was mentioned in the first video you reacted to on this topic the other day, NYC is divided into 5 boroughs but London is divided into 33 London local authorities (the City of London and the 32 London Boroughs). Mind you London is over 600 square miles, so about twice the size of NYC. The number was based on each borough serving a set population number to be able to give enough attention to the local issues that you don’t get with London being carved into larger but fewer boroughs. The smallest London local authority is the City of London at 1.12 square miles and the largest is the London Borough of Bromley at just under 59 square miles.

@@highpath4776 yes. My local one in London Borough of Bromley is West Wickham Common (all the other Commons there are own by Bromley London Borough Council). Probably the most famous landmarks it owns in the London boroughs is Hampstead Heath in the London Borough of Camden and Tower Bridge in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets (north bank) and the London Borough of Southwark (south bank). Outside of London? I know that it manages and owns the whole of Epping Forest despite some of it being outside of London, in the county of Essex.

In the fist clip wher you were concerned there was a car coming, Jay was not jay walking (pun intended) as that's not a thing in UK, he was on a pedestrian crossing called a zebra where pedestrians always have right of way, even though that particular zebra's white stripes were very faded (maybe because two neighbouring Boroughs each think the other should be responsible for it) drivers are alerted buy the zig zag lines on the side of the road telling them to slow down. We di have pelican crossings, (which unlike Zebra crossings, bear mo resemblance to the animal they are named after) pelican crossing have lights telling you when to cross aka red man/green man, but it is not a crime to ignore them.

The rest of England had local government reorganisation is 1974. when the multi tiered structure (Counties, County Boroughs, Municipal Boroughs, Urban Districts and Rural Districts - and in rural areas Parish Councils) were replaced with a two tier system of Counties and Boroughs - except for London (which had its reorganisation in the 1960s) and the large urban conurbations of the West Midlands, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear. Merseyside and Greater Manchester - all of which gained GLC like Metropolitan County Councils and Metropolitan District Councils. Along with the GLC Margaret Thatcher abolished these County Councils, all of which were run by a different party to hers.

There's always been some rivalry between North of the river and South of the river, and you'll find that the Tube network operates mainly in the North - which historically was more affluent and has most of the instruments of Government, Monarchy, Law and Finance situated within it. The Harrow thing was just some silliness.

From a brief look on Wikipedia it seems like the closest local thing to a borough council in LA is a "neighborhood councils". But it looks like the LA neighborhood councils have pretty much zero budget and powers, and for anything that needs significant money or enforcement powers they have to persuade the City Council, LAPD, or another organisation to do it.

Politics is a big issue as far as London’s boroughs are concerned. To the South, the Outer London Boroughs are largely residential and are also largely neglected by the Greater London Authority. Ethnically, certain areas of London have huge populations of different ethnic groups living in different areas. Some boroughs have much older populations than others; some areas are only now really being developed! It is a very widespread, complex city with huge differences from place to place. It would be very difficult to reduce it to two or three authorities , except, possibly, if one of them was Harrow!😀😀😀

Jay isnt quite right about the GLC. It has some (mainly stragegic) planning powers (inc overrule of boroughs / but was subservient to Department of Environment. Likewise the primary road network . But it was the controlling body behind the London Transport Executive (From 1970) but London Bus Service Permits I think were still dealt with by the Metropolitan Area of the Traffic Commissioners under the department of transport. The Metropolitan Police reported to the Home Office, not the GLC. Even after dissoultion the London Residuary Body had a number of powers and it was a bit later before GLC housing was transferred to the London Boroughts (though the GLC would fund borough new builds before that). The GLC was more the successor to the London County Council ( which got bits of the old Metropolitan Board of Works (but not water and drainage?) and was in parrallel to the Inner London Education Authority - which dealt with Schools and Colleges in the old "inner london" boroughs (from when?) The outer ex county boroughs got their own school running (but would buy in some things from ILEA supplies )and when the GLC went ILEA went with it and the inner boroughs got the schools etc and some colleges that were not formed into Polytechnics or stand alone art colleges.. Throw in the London Docklands Development Corporation and it became a great mess. The local authorities had already lost their trolleybus and tram networks to London Transport (1933) and electricity and gas generation to GEGB and Gas Boards on nationalisation in 1948.

I have lived in The Borough of Bexley for 40 years and in almost every respect there is more freedom and flexibility than the socialist-run "Nanny State" of Greenwich next door. Whether it be on the roads where we can escape heavy traffic by using sideroads or even in the park, where we can walk up to 6 dogs if dog walkers whereas it is 4 in Greenwich as they know "best". When exiting The A2 at Falconwood, if you want to turn left then you can not, even though the road is wide enough so(having already spent 15 minutes exiting The A2) you have to turn right THEN wait for oncoming rush hour traffic to ease to turn right into a side road, already blocked. You, eventually, gp round a mini roundabout to take you back to the top of the road in a single file and AGAIN wait for the London rush hour traffic to ease and you are blocked in by other cars turning right and getting priority(like you had earlier over the outgoing side traffic) THEN hope no one is turning right as they are blocked and as it is one lane, they are blocking you and sending the traffic in the side road back 100 yards, which can not move and FINALLY you emerge by turning left and 30 seconds later................passing the SAME exit that you could have just turned left from.Utter madness. Tip for motorists. There is NO CAMERA do I just turn left and xxxx them.

LA (city) is nothing like London. LA county (made of 88 cities) handles certain things and then LA city council deals with everything else. LA City is made up of 15 political districts but I don't think services are supposed to differ across the city - obviously they do because politics. I suspect you live in LA county and not the city. I do wonder how much tax you pay. I hear its ridiculous.

Trivial point but we Londoners are not rabbits, we do not live in burrows. Borough is pronounced 'burra'.

Twice now you have dissed Maggie Thatcher. Hmmm! One of the greatest leaders we have ever had. If it wasn’t for Maggie the UK would still be living in the 1970’s

It needs to be asked, how the fuck did you not know what a bollard is? I'm sure those things arent unique to the UK and are abundant in almost every country including your own.

Because we usually just call them Traffic posts or security posts over here. And, not every city has them.
