In Portugal we have a joke that goes like this: three friends, an american, a dutch and a portuguese, agreed in going to a bar to have a beer. They seat at the counter. The american asks for a bud, the dutch a heineken and the portuguese a coke. "What the heck are you doing?!" shouted the american and the dutch. "Well, since no-one is having a beer...". No hard feelings. Cheers everyone :)

As a teen, beer was for getting buzzed but tasted awful. I joined the Air Force and went to Germany. My whole outlook on beer changed. I had many different kinds of beers with different flavors, and I appreciate them all for their unique characteristics. My general preferences are Weißbier or Hefe, Dunkels, and Pilsner. I almost exclusively buy craft beers from my local area, many available in the local grocery stores.

@@hansc8433 okayy, cool for you. Off course there are people like that. But i dont understand what that has to do with what i said mate? Incase your not aware alcohol free, isnt the same as LITE beer. Light beer is the same as LITE beer. Alcohol free or as we tend to call it 0punt0, is just that alcohol free. They have that to...called alcohol free beer. But neither i nor the original video, were ever talking about alcohol free beer...we were talking about lite or light beer. Like AMSTEL LIGHT. Also "tastes like lemonade" is a saying. A saying that DOES work perfectly for alcohol free beer. Cuz ive tried most of them and they do both figuritively and litteraly taste like lemonade especially the "fresh" once like Radler. I mean dude, really. Find me a actual beer, containing alcohol, that tastes like a Radler.... I can give you a couple of sparkling soda's that taste similar though. And dont get me wrong this isnt a "attack" on non alcoholic beer. I enjoy the taste very much, its a good summer drink. I do have a issue with the wording of non alcoholic "beer" cuz most of those taste nothing like ANY of the beers ive EVER drunk in my LIFE. AND I ENJOY BEER. They dont even taste close to something like a corona, or a desperado which are tequila beers with low alcohol levels. Bit more fruity and closer to what could be a 0punt0 taste, still nothing alike though. So yeah sorry mate, alcohol free aint the same as lite, light beer is the same as lite. And considering your counter argument is alcohol free i would say im correct, most people just get regular beer not lite or light. And if they want the taste of lemonade, they will buy 0punt0.

In Germany, the beer contains only water, hops, malt and yeast. Whereas the American beer also contains rice, and that is not allowed under the German purity law. And according to many Americans here, the American beer tastes like "piss water".

several decades ago, i drank american budweiser on the "Deutsch-Amerikanisches Volksfest" in Berlin/Germany, which was a kind of county fair, with rides and also had its local rules for beer, allowing imported american beer to be sold on the fair grounds. Although i don't feel any real bad effects after drinking quite a few glasses of german beer, and also never having had any headaches for whatever other reason either, i got a bad headache after half a small bottle of the american beer. then i noticed that it was brewed with rice, and during the next years, i tried such "rice-beers" from different countries two more times, and always with the same effect of immediately getting headaches for 2-3 hours. now i watch the ingredient lists very carefully when tasting some new beers from any other countries which don't have to obey that rule, and never had headaches from beer again, including after drinking some chinese beer and some Samuel Adams.

Rice isn't generally forbidden. First, the purity law has been abolished by EU legislation and isn't a law any more, just a guideline. Second, the purity law says malt. It doesn't state which grain has to be used for the malt. So, in theory, you can use wheat, rye, barley, spelt, butalso corn, rice, amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat etc.

The fun fact about the purity law for beer ... it was introduced because Bavarian beer was rubbish at that time. Brewers just put anything liquid in it for color or taste, sometimes toxic ingredients. So the punishment back then was for a brewer to drink his own beer. 😄 To change the image - and quality - of Bavarian beer, the law was first introduced in Bavaria in 1516 and later adapted throughout Germany.
@conceptSde
@conceptSde Жыл бұрын
That's true. But you have to consider that beer at that time was the substitute for usually badly contaminated drinking water with less alcohol than today (but still enough of it to significally reduce the load of bacteria). It was one of the first food protection laws to ensure public health. Even children drank beer instead of water at that point of time (and they even did not have to use brown bags).

almost the same happened in Italy with wine. Until 40 years ago Italy produced a loooooot of bad cheap wines with toxic ingredients, today Italy produce a lot less wine but a lot better, also because the domestic consumption has collapsed. Today Italy is the biggest wine producer in the world with 50M of hectoliters, about a half is exported. In 1980s Italy produced around 80M of hectoliters almost all for domestic consumption (with far fewer vineyards).

One interesting fact is that in Europe (or at least in my country) beer with a blue-colored label is associated with non-alcoholic beers. And it looks like so many American beer brands use blue color on their labels. Especially those light editions. That alone has an impact on my perception about the beer even before drinking it.
@tylisirn
@tylisirn 10 ай бұрын
Weirdly Americans seem to associate light beers with "don't get you drunk" as well, even though they are light in *calories,* not light in *alcohol.* They have typically same or almost the same alcohol content as the regular version. (The two beers mentioned in the video, Coors Light is 4.2% and regular Coors is 5%. You're not gonna notice the difference in drunkenness.)

Living in Poland definitely spoiled me when it comes to beer. I've tried some big label American beer and it was atrocious. It reminded me of Heineken and Carlsberg... It's not like there aren't really bad beers brewed here in Europe, but there are some really good big labels so getting a decent pint isn't like an RPG quest. Budweiser Budvar (the Czech Budweiser) is pretty good, I really like Kozel, Pilsner Urquell is nice, of the Polish brands I really like Komes and especially their Russian Imperial Stout and Baltic Porter which are like 18-20% ABV and there is a version they age in a bourbon barrel for 6 months and it's SO GOOD! A pint of a beer like that is like a 4 pack of regular beer by alcohol content though so you gotta be careful 😂

There's a story about some American businessmen going to Czechoslovakia shortly after the revolution to buy a beer recipe from a popular brewery. They thought they got lucky when they got it for only one million dollars. They went back home and tried to brew it and it tasted like garbage. They quickly returned to try to get their money back. The brewery brewed the beer in front of them according to the recipe and it tasted perfect. The Americans were confused. Then one of the brewers asked them what water they were using and they said "Perfectly clean and filtered water out of the tap". Oh... came the reply. We've been using the water from the natural spring behind our brewery for the last 600 years. Maybe that's your problem. But don't worry, we can bottle some up for you and ship it to the US for a reasonable price. With not a legal leg to stand on, the would be brewers returned home with out their million.

Urquell is a slightly different story - it's not about the water as much as it is about a commitment to produce it in a single location, according to a traditional recipe, in traditional stills, overseen by brewers of all generations, to maintain its exclusivity - nothing against that, but it's not really about the exceptional composition of the water. The best beer I ever tasted was in an archeological museum. What? Well, there were a few (fake) monks singing latin hymns whilst making beer in a pot hanging in the fire place. I asked: Is that real beer? Yes, the (fake) abt said. Would you like to taste it? Come back in two hours and I will have some of it cooled down. So I came back and it was truly heavenly (pun intended). Unortunately the next visit a few month later they still made the beer, but the fake abt told me he was not allowed to let anybody drink it anymore as they were fined for not obeying health and consumer safety laws. The variety of beers in Europe is staggering. I had a colleague who had as a hobby beer tasting and he kept records of all his tastings and what he liked/disliked and why. He did it for 20 years, three tiny glasses of beer a day, in total roughly 20.000 different beers and he said he only scratched the surface.

Eastern Pennsylvania has always had an alternative to the watered down crappy mass produced beers, and that is Yuengling, the Oldest Brewery in the US. They survived prohibition by changing to dairy, including ice cream. Their lager tastes and looks much different than the mass produced beers. More of a darker, honey look and full of flavor. Considered the largest micro brewery in the US, it now is available in at least 26 states.

That's the issue with beers in the french part of Flanders. On the belgian side, they have more or less the tradition of ... having no enshrined tradition. It's not uncommon for small breweries to try out new stuff. Not always successful, but we have a good laugh about it and say "well we won't do that one again next year". We do however enshrine the recipes that work. It's somewhat like Beaujolais Nouveau in France, a good laugh about it tasting like bad bananas most years, but once in a while you get a gem everybody remembers.

Went down to Seattle for two days and American craft beers were the same. These East and West Coast beers are now being brewed in the UK. However most people in UK still drink lager, and beer became very mass produced in the 1970,s and Camra the campaign for real fought back, and things are much better now. I'm not a big beer drinker but when my wife and I went to Europe in 1991 we discovered every town in countries like Germany and Belgium had their own brewery making fabulous beers. Each was served in a glass that was shaped for that particular brewery, so you could tell which beer was which. I even tried a beer made in China and was pleasantly surprised by its taste.
@indus3270
@indus3270 Жыл бұрын
Belgian here! The shape of the glass isn't always just for brand recognition and marketing. Many beer glass shapes have a significant roll to play in how the beer is poured and served, and the shape of the glass often influences the way the beer tastes. As you may or may not know, our tongue only does about 10% of the tasting and the rest is done in the nose. When a beer glass has a sort of a chalice or teardrop-like shape that goes more narrow near the top, this is often done explicitly to keep the beer's volatile fragrances in the glass, so they can be inhaled while drinking, thus adding to the flavor in ways that most people don't even know about. This doesn't apply to big brand lager-style beers as much as it does for the (mostly darker colored) craft beers though. That's it for today, kids. In the next lesson, I'll be talking about how some beers go in green glass bottles, some go in dark brown glass bottles, transparent beer bottles are always crap and why all of this matters! =D

As born and raised in Zeelandic Flanders (border area Belgium/Holland) my palette for beer has mostly developed around Belgium beers. My favourites are the dark double trappist beers such like Rochefort and WestMalle Double. I lived in the US for a few years and didn't care much for the bud/cours type of beers or the nasty stuff like Steel Reserve, but found some solace in some of the local microbreweries doing a good take on Belgium style beers and IPA's, so I wouldn't say American beer is per definition shit. It just seems to me that the popular brands get too much undeserved attention. just like everyone in the US assumed I would be drinking Heineken all day. Heineken is piss water as well. German beers are always good - but that is because the law doesn't allow you to mess with beer.

Heineken is NOT piss water. It's actually a high quality pilsener. Also, you are wrong about the so-called 'Purity Law' in Germany because it isn't actually a law and if it was it would have been struck down by European antitrust regulations. It's perfectly legal in Germany to sell beer which is not brewed in accordance with it. Every large supermarket chain sells Belgian fruit beers or for example Perła Miodowa, Polish honey beer. The Reinheitsgebot is non-binding and is adhered to voluntarily by German brewers.

I'm a beer sommelier and brewer specialized in Belgium beers. I've worked for Interbrew, later Inbev for years travelling the world promoting their beers and giving courses. In 2004 I spend about 9 months travelling in the States doing that. Still to today, if you look up a map with all the craft breweries, you can still see more or less the places where Ive given courses, as they all grew to become hotspots for craft breweries. Being part of the move to craftbeers in the States is still probably the biggest achievement I've made as a sommelier. Left the firm though when they merged with the Americans funny enough (it's AB Inbev now).

One thing that I've got to give the US, though, is their craft brew scene. I was there in 2008 and you couldn't walk three feet without coming across some of the best beers that I've ever sampled. As I understand it, they moved there installation to the USA and became a local American brewer. Because at the same time you got a lot of smaller breweries in the US, you had consolidation in Belgium caused by one company known back than under the name Interbrew. Now known under the name AB Inbev. They forced other breweries to merge to stay competitive and caused many smaller player to close down.

Being an American from San Diego, CA who has lived in Prague for 20 years, I can tell you Czechs and Germans brew the best standard lagers in the world. Quality Czech lager beers are more bitter and the German beers are usually more malty, especially Kellerbier. My favorites in Prague and Czechia are our local beautifully bitter, unfiltered, unpasteurized deep, golden beers. The best filtered commercial beer in Czech is Pilsner Urquell. It currently goes for about 60kc or $2.50 per half liter. When visiting home in SD, I drink Stone, Ballast Point and Green Flash varieties of West Coast IPA but I do love a nice black stout also. Cheers everybody!

Well here in germany we have the 'Reinheitsgebot' which restricts beer to beeing comprised only from water, malt, hops and yeast. That beeing said, we have a ton of different flavours of beed only from those 4 components and it´s way enough, for me at least, to get one for every mood or taste. So this is the big secret to germanys great beer culture. Btw i vote for Jever all day, but im from hamburg, pretty much the northern part of germany. If you can come by any of these brands, try them and damn the expense: Jever (obvi) or Ratsherren. They are very heavy on hops and have a very special taste which i have come to love!

I'm from Germany and my favourite is a local-ish brewery from Aschaffenburg called Schlappeseppel ("lame Seppel", named after Joseph "Seppel" Lögler who founded the brewery in 1631 and had suffered a leg injury during the 30 Years War). They got a variety of brews and they're all excellent, but their "Specialität" is a specialty beer somewhere between Export and Pilsner, and I could easily drink it till I drop. It comes in 0,33 l flip-top bottles which is a nice touch I enjoy with my beer as well because of the satisfying plop sound when you open them, and the bottle size is just the right amount to drink to ensure it doesn't go too stale or lose flavour after you opened the bottle. So yeah, a mixture of great taste, satisfying presentation/experience and a bit of local patriotism. Prost to all of you!
