It's likely because the Vietnamese people are used to is the Southern dialects. Hien is from the North where the dialects sound different. It's like a Texan and Scottish speaking English.

Mandarin, Japanese, Viet, and Thai we’re a dead give away for me. I could see how someone could mistake Laos for Viet or vice versa but to me, they don’t sound alike nor would I ever confuse the two.

As a native speaker, she sounds like she smoked a blunt/marijuana and sounds high lol No offense to Sophia hehe She seems really sweet and gentle, but my goodness, she does speak really slow, but could be either how she's raised/environment, or as someone did mention, some neurological condition that makes her speak slow. Either way, it's a nice change to see an American that's soft spoken. Not all of us are loud and crass! :D

I just know Indonesian and Thai, but Indonesian sounds like European language that's why it's easy for me to guess it.
