My dad was a US Navy sailor from Los Angeles when he met my mum in Southampton in 1944. She was in the WAAF, 17 years old. It was love at first sight. It took a while, but she came to California a few years after the war. One of my favorite pictures is one of my daughters with RMS Queen Mary in the background. The ship that brought their Granny to America. I miss them both.

Fascinating story! Hopefully they had a good life. On a related note, I can't tell you how many pictures I've seen of World War II WACs and WAVES (our equivalent of Britain's WAAF, WRNS, etc.) smirking at servicemen who have come up and started talking to them, they knew why they were saying hello. Absolutely hilarious. Needless to say, a number of them headed home from Asia or Europe with husbands.

This story makes me grateful I acted on my awareness I wanted marry a woman I met in Korea in late 1971. I asked her to marry me, and she said yes but I left for my next assignment in February 1972. We kept in touch with letters, and I decided to reenlist to go back to Asia, getting an assignment on Okinawa in 1973. I took 3 trips to Korea from Okinawa to start the marriage paperwork, return about a year later to be married at the American Embassy and a last trip in June 1974 to process her passport and visa. We only had 23 hours left to board the flight to the states when the final visa stamp was completed. Still married after 49+ years and I'm still enjoying her company! (Guess she figured I was 'trainable' so she decided to keep me!) 😁

It's heartbreaking to love someone you can't have. In my case, he's 12 years younger than me and never married. I was married with 3 beautiful children, and being single for 4 years until last year when I met him. We loved each other so much but the age gap is my big problem + I feel like I have no rights to destroy his chance to be a father and have a good life with someone else. So I ended the relationship couple of weeks ago and let him go. Like others have always said, "If you love someone that much, let them go". And that's what I did, and love him from afar but closed all contacts to him
