I have been an electrician for 10 years. Recently, my mentor retired sold his business to another guy who has no electrical experience. Needless to say I didn’t get along with him so I went and got my electrical license took me four months. Now I own my own company for the last eight months. I am a one-man show which means I am constantly running, and I’m always stressed out it seems. The money is great though and I just hired my first day who starts Monday. Everything that you said is spot on. Out here in Arizona where I am when you work a commercial job you listen to Spanish music the entire day blaring. I have nothing against it, but that’s all you ever hear, and that is probably my number one gripe is when you’re trying to read a blueprint and you cannot concentrate on anything because of the radio blaring all day on a commercial job

I got incredibly lucky with my journey as an apprentice, I went to community college learning the construction trades (electricity, plumbing and HVAC) I enjoyed electric the most and excelled in it. I also loved hvac and it’s cool to see it all come into play. We’ve been on a house rewire this week and looking to be done tomorrow. I’ve been out of high school and community college. I did both at the same time for about 3 years now and been in the food industry for 7 so this is definitely different work but I love it. It’s just simply me and one dude that does his own electric jobs and we just ride around doing electrical and I learn every day and he’s been a great teacher. I love my job and cannot wait to experience more. It’s been difficult and it’s been hard but it’s been so rewarding and has given me so much to look forward to in these next few months. First month down a lot more to go. Woot woot

I was thinking about a career as an electrician but this has me second guessing it. I'm not doing 40+ hour weeks anymore. I'm done with that BS. I know it's good money but family and alone time is important.

I've been a electrician for 40 years. State license. I did out of ground for 22 years . I joined local 613 Atlanta Ga 18 years ago and have been doing Tennant build out. It's warm in the winter and usually ac in the summer little conduit. Mc cable , a lit of lighting controls. I found this is the easiest and cleanest theater of operations. Schedule is a little fast but nice working conditions .

Working with turds is the worst. We were placed with a grumpy old man who didn't think that we are working or using our brains when they tell us to go do new things it was very frustrating trying to work under those conditions of a jackass so regardless some people quit but they intend to come back there's a big issue with these guys who come in from outside with no experience and then the guys that have all the experience. I noticed that some of these guys come straight out of prison and yeah the trades are open to anybody but they have s*** attitudes. It's horrible to develop with these turds but on the plus side as they cuss you out so can you. It's horrible to feel this way that you want to cuss your co-workers out but if they disrespect you and start cussing you out then it should be fair that management doesn't step in you take resorts to defend yourself. You will meet really low people who are just scrambling for work they are desperate people and are their working as electricians because they have no other choice

Power company lineman, or contractor lineman is same, same. Wearing rubber gloves & sleeves while working high voltage in the summertime will give you heat stroke & frostbite in the wintertime. Working in hurricanes, thunderstorms, ice storms, wind storms, mud, dust, ditches, floods, & 24/7 on call at times. It's still a damned fine career with major satisfaction when you get the lights back on.

I was training to be an electrical engineer. I was the youngest there. And the least popular. After about 2 months noone really liked me or talked to me after about. So i would just isolate myself try not to blow a fuse. There was a guy in the first year of his mortgage i spoke to him twice. And by the end of study we hated eachother so much. He would say things like "well if you showed up.." and when he would take a day off id talk shit about him too. Noone really helped me with any of the assignments i would go out of my way to assist where i could. At the end of study i was depressed felt like i learnt nothing and didnt really want to persue a trade. It was during the pandemic so half the year we studied at home. After this i dislocated my shoulder and didnt receive treatment for over a year. My family told me the pain was all in my head. So i believed them and went back to work. This was the most agonizing time of my life at 20 and in rediculous pain. My first job wasn't even in my trade it was a temping job i was underpaid. I would service appliances and scrap them or repair them. This involved lifting fridges and ovens by myself all day working on the dirty factory floor. My boss was an asshole ex-mechanic. And an autistic control freak. He would tell me, how to sweep how to drill. How to turn a screw. It was great when he wasnt there. I left after two weeks of that. I'd applied for a solar job and thought id made it through. First they told me i wasnt going to be an electrician. Which is what i applied for. I was going to be a tradesassitant or labourer. Which is nothing but a roadblock to stop me before i start. I lasted a week. They were all white south africans. And heartless swine. They would make me lift things by myself just to watch me struggle with my shoulder they got a sick kick out of making young people suffer. They thought because i was a labourer they could kick my ass all the time. "Boy pass me that drill." Boy get this, boy get that. Clean up. Pack up, climb up. I had an argument with my Supervisor while in the roof cavity. I dropped a couple of conduit bends crawling through the 10m of roof. So i had an uneven amount. He then tries to lecture me about making sure i have the right amount of tools. I said i did i simply dropped them. He says, "no boy im telling you what to dew. You need to prepayered." *Saffa accent* He left me in the roof for 15 minutes i could hear him fucking around with the master electrician and the apprentice they told me off for using the toilet i was gone for less than 5 minutes they couldve survived. They then made me clean up after the apprentice electrician who got in on the bullying he would make a massive mess leaving tools and drill bits everywhere if any went missing i was told off i asked him to be more organised. I might aswell asked him not to breathe. I walked home that day my ride was late. Dont trust family members. The next day we show up at 6 and spend two hours on toolbox talking. Before we go to site we must fill out a form with all the saffa says "dont fill it in until we reach site." I said "i can write down the work we're doing, how much harnesses and where we are going." He said "no, boy dont write on itt." I filled most of it in and he told me off again when we got to site. He then rushed me to unpack the truck while finishing the paperwork. Then got mad when i had all the harnesses, carbenas and tools but hadnt completed the sheet. By now i was done they already made me lift the 20kg solar panels by myself. Then he says right you can set up the anchor. Which i didnt know how. It was my second day. Get fucked. It was a two story building. And i was still being picked on. They then said "boy go get the *obscure tool*" as i was in the truck i caught my reflection in the mirror and my black undereyes, sweat. Dirty hair and face. It hit me. "I HATE this. I turned to take the stuff back and he starts yelling "why arent you up here on the roof." And i say, "im done." Never seen them so stunned. Probably because they thought id last a bit longer but they overestimated how much i wanted it. They thought id do anything for it. Not true I'd do no more than the bare minimum. Fuck those cunts and fuck the trade. You want to bust your ass, destroy your body. Do it to yourself you exconvict dirtbags. We should force all our prisoners into the trades theyre the perfect candidates for the slave labour that is being a tradesperson.

@MrZombiescordo I started learning the trades with I was 6 years old. I worked with my father and my 4 uncles. In the State of Michigan, there is an exception if you are from a family owned business and the electrical inspectors can submit an affidavit for my time working for my grandfather and father, plus my father affirm the time I had worked.. Plus, I had taken several classes through trade school.. I have been reading both NEC and Uniform Plumbing Code Books every day religious until I was 30 years old!!!!

It’s honestly not that bad just like with anything there is pros and cons. I’m in commercial new construction some projects are dirtier than most for sure but in general they can be very clean once the slab and walls are up. There is assholes everywhere but if you try to learn from the old heads you will be fine. If they get abusive pushback is always a healthy thing in a mentor/subordinate relationship. Look it’s mostly guys in the trades so you are going to have to get over using a portapotty. If you work hard and try to learn as much as you can to be a well rounded electrician you will fine. Number one thing a lot of guys struggle with is tools. I cannot stress enough how you apprenticeship should be spent buying tools. Tools make your job easier but I see a lot of guys spend their paycheck on women, booze, drugs, vacation, and bullshit honestly. Don’t fall into those bad habits, get your ass up and go to work, be on time, and you will easily skip past %80 of the guys out there

Plus I think from a business point of view, it’s unsafe, it would be a liability to have someone in your condition on the job site. Respectfully ofc…
