The guy who didn't want to be filmed... Quite a few Customs officers spend time undercover - they mingle with passengers claiming their baggage, they mix with the crowds waiting to meet people, they watch for people who might be drugs mules, etc. So they don't want their pictures on the internet because then they can't do their jobs. I first learned about this years ago when I went to Hong Kong and Australia. I bought a new camera in HK and loads of other stuff in Oz - I used/wore it all while I was away but even so I had to sneak everything back in to the UK. Imagine my horror therefore when one of the people meeting me at Heathrow shouted "wow, you got your new camera then!" across the arrivals hall - I spent the next few days waiting for someone to arrest me for smuggling! (Oh and in case a customs officer reads this, it was years ago - you missed me!)

This made me chuckle. It's that switch from "it's funny because 100 degrees is our normal temperature." to "We're struggling with this heat... No energy...". We so rarely have air con in the UK and we don't have sprinklers for our grass (hence why it's died off in the sunshine) - it would honestly be considered a waste of water, yet it's so common in the US. Our infrastructure is just not built for the heat.

Lol, that reminds me of a conversation I had with someone who told me they *love* this heat. I remarked that I tend to stay out of the sun because I had skin cancer and she said, without realising the irony "Oh I don't stay out in it. Luckily I have air con in my home. I wouldn't cope otherwise" I supposed it's easy to love the heat from inside an air conditioned room lolol.

Here in Australia a lot of people with top loading washing machines divert the rinse cycle water (not the soapy washing cycle water) from our washing machines to our lawns during droughts. During a bad drought, if I am running water from my hot water tap or shower I save the cold water that comes out first for my pot plants. Also cold water from rinsing lettuce, vegetables etc for the pot plants. My daughter in law’s mother even uses her bath water for her garden. It becomes a way of life in Summer. Oh, and when we have low water storage in our dams, washing cars is banned, depending on the number of your house “odd or even number” you can water your garden between certain early morning or late evening hours every second day. When the dams get low we jump in the shower and get wet, turn the water off and soap up, then turn the water back on and rinse off because we have a recommended number of litres for daily use per person when we are getting to a dangerously low level. We have never exceeded our recommended daily allowance. Oh, forgot we also have rain water tanks attached to our houses for flushing toilets and to save water from the mains for drinking etc. at our last house we had around 12,000 litres of water collected from our roof system saved to water tanks for watering our gardens, washing cars and topping up our spa pool. Our new smaller home has only one slim line water tank (4,000 litres) used for flushing toilets.

I work in central London, and I find everything a lot smaller and underwhelming, but when you sit there and realise a lot of the buildings were built - a VERY long time ago, you begin to understand just how important history is. It's easy to walk past something hot and bothered and in a hurry - I sat outside Big Ben recently eating lunch, and after 30 mins of sitting there I just realise how much history I'm sitting on top of, not knowing it.

The River Thames is actually one of the cleanest and purist rivers in the world. If you take a bottle and fill it up with water from the River Thames and leave it for an hour the water will be as clear as tapwater. The reason it looks that brown colour is because the river is clay/silt based. Because of the tides the clay/silt is lifted from the river bed and swirls throughout the water and that’s what gives it that colour. So if you did swim in it it wouldn’t harm you in anyway.

The same can be said for many Chinese tourists (middle-aged and older ones, at least). My family went on a bus tour of eastern Canada with my aunt’s family-us from the U.S., them from China-and neither my parents nor my aunt ended up tasting poutine even once, having picked a tour package that stopped at Chinese restaurants for almost every meal break. Note that neither of our families was limited by financials-let’s just put it like that. And I suspect that’s the same for your typical American family who can afford a trip to Japan. Insularity is a very, but not uniquely, American trait.

There are hundreds of different beers on sale in the UK. When travelling around try the local beers and ciders. If you get time the Docklands area is worth exploring, and the Thames upstream of the Houses of Parliament is worth a look. Finally, the Number 11 bus from Liverpool Street station goes past the Bank of England, St Paul's cathedral, Nelson's Column, Houses of Parliament and more; it's like a tour except it's a regular bus route. Enjoy your time in the UK.

It’s great seeing this. You crammed so much in in such a short period of time. How amazing that you timed your visit for the arrival of a member of the Royal Family!!!😲 Maybe they knew you were in town and had come to see YOU, ( or maybe they’re confusing you with jtreacts!)🤩😆 Slightly disappointed that you didn’t have the time to go into some of the historic places or the London Eye but maybe when you come back you can spend a little longer to experience even more. The grass is so dry because there’s been very little rain in London for several months. Hopefully, as you’ve travelled around the country and have watched the weather forecast, you’ll have seen how different the weather can be depending on which part of the country you’re at. Rain often fizzles out before it gets to the south east, hence London is classed as a semi arid area and gets about the same amount of rainfall per year as Israel. Thanks for the cliff hanger at the end (but you kind of gave it away in your pinned comment😉), can’t wait for the next episode 👍🏼

So sorry you got caught in all of our heatwave chaos! I had fun trying to get into London the following day for work... We are not a country designed for 30+ temperatures! Saying that though the last time I caught the train to Bath it was the middle of winter and the line flooded so ended up being diverted to Bristol instead, so no matter the weather there's always something going wrong with the trains :-P. Hope you did make it to Bath safely and I look forward to seeing more of your travels!

The problems you encountered with the trains is due to the fact that our infrastructure here in the UK is not set up to cope with such extreme heat. The rails and overhead power cables on the trains are only rated to withstand temperatures up to 35 degrees centigrade not temperatures of 40 and over. At those temperatures things start to sustain damage.

Trains doors in the UK close automatically on a time limit in a terminus station until it is time for departure when they are all closed by the driver. They can be opened by a button until then. @seeyouanon2931
@seeyouanon2931 Жыл бұрын
In Britain we are all told about the consequences of smoking, the legal age for buying cigarettes or vape is 18, but like all countries, you will have some teenagers who are rebellious and go against authority and they think smoking or vaping makes them look cool and grown up. It is also illegal to smoke or vape inside a building,or on local transport, and if you are driving your own car, any passengers have to be 18 or over and be ok with you smoking, hence you will see alot vaping and smoking outside, or in outdoor designated smoking areas. Plus also, eastern European countries and even middle eastern countries smoke and vape a lot more! And maybe the people Joel saw in London were actually foreign tourists and not British! Especially as London has millions of foreign tourists going through. A handful of smokers does not mean the whole country is at it. Funny enough USA has a very high rate of smokers. Sorry Joel but that's a fact!

Actually if you were just travelling from Liverpool Street to Paddington, you could have used your BritRail Pass if you travelled on the Elizabeth Line - that’s part of National Rail rather than London Underground. A day ticket for zone 1 or zone 1+2 on the Underground is £7.70, which isn’t too extortionate when the cash fare for a single journey in zone 1 is £6.30 if you pay cash, but only £2.50 if you use an Oyster card or a contactless bank card (they’re seriously trying to discourage people from using cash!).

There weren't any scooters to make it easier on those sore feet though. I'm not sure who you saw going into Buck Pal but the car had a crown on it, so I'd say royalty of some variety.
