The thing about British accents is that they're not only regional they're also 'class' .... so within a regional accent you'll have upper class, middle class and working class variations. Invariably the working class variation is the strongest and most difficult to understand. This is rarely pointed out in these accent' videos because they tend to concentrate on what you might hear from famous people or on TV and film ..... and that is usually the middle class version of the accent, By the way she said her family is from Solihull and that is a 'posh' part of the Birmingham conurbation

This is my cousin's accent and I hear it all the time on the phone - though his own is not quite so broad as real Brummie. If I do the Brummie accent then I try and focus on how the actress Ann George used to sound. My mother was an avid viewer of the Midlands' soap opera Crossroads and Ann was born in Smethwick. I can stray into Liverpool if I don't keep my mind on it. There's a distinction between the two. Craig Charles is a real Scouser. Paul McGann has tonalities of Liverpool. You can go overboard with each accent. The trick is to go for subtlety and somehow capture them. It really does help to get the music of the accent, rhythms and sounds, having a musical ear.

I've lived in Edgbaston, Birmingham for more than thirty years and I can tell you, there's a lot of confusion among Brits over the difference between the Birmingham accent and that of the Black Country (an area to the west and north-west of Birmingham that includes Dudley and Sandwell). Black Country folk split syllables with an 'oh' or 'ow' vowel sound into two separate syllables e.g. 'phowan' instead of 'phone' or 'towan' instead of 'town'. Interestingly, the word 'vowel' itself is how Black Country people pronounce 'vole', a type of water rat. This is similar to the way folk from the deep south of the USA pronounce some vowel sounds. Penelope Pitstop from the Wacky Races springs to mind: "Hy-elp! Hy-elp!" Instead of 'Help! Help!' The people of Solihull, to the south-south-east of Birmingham, generally speak with a 'posh' accent, similar to that of Kensington in London. "I say, Old Chap, I'm from SO-lee-hull".

Joel as someone Scottish who went back to Birmingham again to see the amazing Tom Bailey in concert at the Town Hall I honestly don't think you gave Birmingham enough of a chance. Yes there are parts where it's a little rough arounds the edges and what I saw of the Digbeth area might not look the greatest but I think Birmingham has a lot to offer. If only you'd ventured further and saw Victoria Square and the Town Hall, the library and the canals area that runs from the arena over to the mailbox. That part is amazing. When I visited the canal area on my last visit early morning the water was so still and amazing reflections on the water for photographs. I just wish with the greatest of respect that you'd persevered with it. And I'm 21 miles west of Glasgow so it's not like I'm giving a biased opinion on the city just an honest one. It also has an Indian restaurant there that is so good Tom Cruise atw not just one but two curries there.

Yes, the British English version flows through with a slight stress on the first syllable, not the last. The 'g' is very soft, more like a y. Locals pronounce the city name with a nasal intonation, so the Bir sound ends up more like 'buer' . Or call it Brum. Someone from Brum is called a 'Brummie'.🙂

I'm originally from the Manchester area, but spent over 30 years in Birmingham, and I'm now living in the Black Country. I've become fond of the West Midlands, and I'm still seething that when Joel came to Birmingham, he proceeded to walk in PRECISELY THE WRONG DIRECTION, away from the City Centre into an area that is being redeveloped. ( The BBC are now going to have a major centre in that bit, and other trendy things.) In this video she does speak Brummie very well, and they're both right in spotting the link with Welsh. English accents from further East fall at the end of sentences, but West Midlanders have a sing-song effect, keeping the last syllable stressed. An example is 'ticket', which West Midlanders tend to pronounce 'tick - itt', with equal stress on both syllables. ( Welsh speakers go up at the end of their sentences.) There are more people in the Black Country - where I've lived for eight years - than there are in Birmingham, although the Black Country's nextdoor. Each community in the Black Country has its own accent, particularly among the elderly, and all are different from each other and Brummie! An important feature of Black Country English are the negative verbs. 'I can't' is 'I cor', 'I weren't' is 'I wor', 'I'm not' is 'I bay'; 'I am' - or even sometimes ' you are' - is 'yam'. The result is that Brummies call Black Country people 'yam-yams'.

The closest I’ve been to Birmingham from London is the NEC in Marston Green, England to see a car exhibition there. Brum, like the rest of the midlands use to be one of Britains heartlands for heavy industries, but sadly no more which is why the area went into decline. But the city is being regenerated, so hopefully it will witness a renaissance once again. Also, I remember watching your brief visit into the city of Birmingham. You left as quickly as you arrived, running on your feet so fast, you couldn’t really get a feel for the city in its true colours, bearing in mind every city has its good and bad points.

I'm from the Midlands originally and most people from my town are influenced by Southern pronunciations, but I was influenced by Northern pronunciations. So I will use a sharp 'a' in words whereas my friends will all use a longer sounding 'a'. Quite a few people say they can't place my accent, I've been asked by an Irish person which part of Ireland I'm from. Someone from the East said they had never heard an accent like mine before. Now I live in the South West, some people say they can pick up on a 'twang' but can't ever quite guess where I am from. In the Midlands when it comes to discussing accents we tend to joke that we don't have an accent because we are from the Midlands. Her accent has quite good. But I'd say some Lancashire accents are worse than Brummie ones. Have a listen to the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, he doesn't sound like he should be there at all.

"How long have I got?" asks the man distraught and the medico replies "Six months." The man blanches and implores "Are you sure? is there nothing you can recommend?". The GP scratches his head and after a moment says "Well you could move to Birmingham and marry a Brummie." "How will that help?" snarls Mr Green The doctor replies sympathetically, "Well it will make the next six months seem like a lifetime."

I’m from the Black Country which neighbours Birmingham and to be honest her accent was good, a little exaggerated but it’s probably to prove a point. 😂 try watching like ozzy osbourne or jack grealish if you know who that is. They have pretty strong accents

Try and do a Manchester accent with slang, that would be good! So for instance we say 'innit' for isn't it..Another thing we say is 'where's the bog?', which means 'Where's the toilet'..

As a brummie, I think people who try to imitate a brummie accent exaggerate it a tad. The g thing on the end of a word like going is exaggerated, the g isn't even pronounced, so it would be pronounced goin, or in some parts of brum and the black country which is by birmingham as gooin. Different parts of birmingham sound different.

Also just be mindful of the difference between a Birmingham and Black Country Dialect as they are very different but get generalised together when non natives take about brummie accents.

Most of the actors in Peaky Blinders were having to put the accent on and only a few of them managed it properly. Well the girl in the video was doing kind of ok but she was forcing it too much which made it sound a bit Black country . I think to learn to speak Brummie you two need to listen to a Jasper Carott Video rather than Peaky . . looking forward to seeing you try the accent lolllll

Because of my accent I'm unable to consistently do other accents. So I've got a glasweig accent and I lived in London and Essex so I'd often try do an English accent around my ex and her family or so a cockney accent but I'd always butcher it lol. BTW my exs family or mum would pronounce house without the h so she would say ouse.

Also Queen my all time favourite band, check out Who wants to live forever. I was at Wembley stadium on 11 July 1986, that song bought me to tears. Still love it now.

When you visited Birmingham I don't know how you got into back streets, Birmingham isn't that bad a town it has its good / bad parts just like everywhere else there are Arena's for Concerts ( Billy Conally, Peter kay, Elton John, Madonna, Queen, Madness, etc ) all have played there, it has art gallery's, and libraries, it has Cadbury World that's a working chocolate factory you can walk around they give you free chocolate and you hear about its history, it has a large train station, and the Commonwealth games were held in Birmingham in 2022, the Birmingham accent is also called a black County accent, I live in Staffordshire I have the accent but a milder version because I live a little further away it sounds different between regions but the underlying tone is there Jasper Carrott the comedian is from Birmingham check him out, ozzy Osborne he came from Birmingham, Noddy Holder ( slade ) is from Walsall ( Staffordshire ) but sounds like he is from Birmingham
