There is a concept you need to understand. I've never seen it mentioned in any Rugby Laws video. ADVANTAGE I can't think of any of our American sports that use 'advantage'. The closest thing is in Football. When a penalty or foul occurs the Ref throws a flag, then after the play they ask the non offenders weather they want the penalty or the play. In rugby the ref decides for you. What happens when the ref sees an infraction he will call out that the non offending team has an advantage ("Advantage Red") and then he will watch what happens. If the offending team gains any advantage the whistle blows and play stops. If however the non offending team gains a sufficient advantage the infraction is ignored. If you are on the attack and you hear the ref say that you have an advantage you know it's time to break out the high risk/reward plays because you know that if you screw it up play will be brought back to wherever the infraction happened and that you will be given possession. I first saw/joined rugby in 1972 at the age of 20.

A good explanation. Just for clarity, advantage is only offered to the team in possession, so the minor infraction is made by the defending team. It is a rule designed to maximise flow of the game and minimise stoppages. I started playing rugby at 7. My father played at high school, university and then for Blackheath, England's oldest rugby team. He used to put weights in his pockets so he could play for the top team at school back when weight, not age was the determining factor.

Around min: 4:24 Putting the ball down is equivilent to actually scoring the "touch down" which is called a try. Its called a try because historically it used to equate to 3 point but now has evolved to 5 points. 8:10 Droping the ball behind you (behind you means it must land behind the position of your feet or front foot) which does not result in a foul since the ball is played or passsed backwards, which is just a continuation of play. So play continues as normal and anyone can collect to continue play thus holding possesion. 12:50 Yeah a ruck and mall is similar to scrum but has signifcant differeces as scrum has 8 players and starts from a stoppage in play usually resulting from a foul like a "knock on" when the ball is drop forward which is infront of the players feet but a ruck and mall is in continued play with any number of players (so the whole team can join). So ruck essentially involves securing the ball (where the defending team needs to ensure the players push the defending team back whilst the ball is behind them when pushing availing it for the scrumhalf to collect and distribute) leading to the mall which is more of the pushing type thing which reflects which team has forward momentum hence continuation of play. Kindly excuse the long explains otherwise. Try to makesure I informaly include common vocabulary as much as possible. 🤭

@adriangilholm2425 2 ай бұрын
Historically, a try was worth 0 points. It was called a 'Try' to give you an attempt at kicking the goal! Later on it became worth 3 points, then 4 and finally 5. for the reason of encouraging teams to score tries and be more entertaining. Watching a 3-3 slug fest is not entertainment.

I can't understand why that law is not enforced. It would end a lot of the messing if it was. Both sides would have an incentive to keep the scrum stable. You hardly ever have a "strike against the head" anymore.

If you start by being shocked that the field could be called a pitch, then there is not much hope that you will grasp anything to do with the game itself. Put the ball down? It's called a touchdown. In Rugby that means you touch the ball down. In NFL a touchdown means you don't touch the ball down. At school I played two sports - rowing and rugby.

Hi Guys I started to play Rugby Union aged 14, at school which is older than many kids. Local clubs run mini rugby for boys and girls with a starting age of 5/6. The older kids are known as juniors 9,10.11,12,13, then the 14 to 17's are known as colts. At 18 you can play in the adult team, but many clubs run under 20's or 21 teams before intergrating the young people it depends on their individual body size/strength and mental maturity. I am a big man 6ft 1 tall and wieghing 250lbs so was playing with the men from age 17. Most rugby clubs in England field many different teams not only for the kids but the adults also. One club I played for fielded 6 teams each week. The first team was the best and competion to play in the firsts was huge, you then had a 2nd, 3rd teams ranked in merit then the last three teams were all of an equal standing. The idea was to allow as many people with as many different ability and ages to be able to play. You always started in the lower teams and worked your way up. Equally as you aged and your speed and fitness declined you would drop down but the great thing about that was you could pass your skills and knowledge onto the younger plays. When i started playing at 17 some of my team mates were old enough to be my dad. At one club we fielded a grandfather, his son and the grandson in the various teams. To score a try you must place the ball over the try line onto the ground with it under control and positive downward pressure. Unlike football where you just have to get over the line with the ball. The best thing about rugby is its social side. Once you come off the pitch all hostilities are forgoton and buying your oposite number a pint in the bar was always the order of the day, despite the fact you had takled or been tackled very hard during the game. Sometime tempers ignite and punches get thrown on th pitch, but you always make up in the bar. By the way throwing punches will see you sent off and a penalty awarded against your team. Enjoy our great game. Did you know the USA plays internationals and has both mens and womens teams, check that out.

one important thing she didn't explain was that after a try is scored the kick for the 2 extra points must be in a line with where the ball was touched down this is why you often see players running closer to the posts before they touch the ball down - it makes the kick for extra points easier - contrast that with your Football the kick for an extra point is always placed in the centre of the field

You have to touch the ball to the floor to score a “Try” this where the term “Touch Down” comes from. The ball has to be touched down between the touch line and the end line, if you go to far and pass the end line you’ve missed your chance to score a touch down. This is important to learn because if there is a tussle on the touch line it is possible for the defending team player to put his hand under the ball and stop a touch, the ref will watch and use camera replay to verify his decision of touch or no touch. Ok? Cheers both

This is video is old - at the scrum the ball is no longer put into the middle - it is now usually put under or behind the feet of the hooker ( the man in the middle of the front row) in the team whose half back is putting it in the scrum. The two teams depicted are England in the white and New Zealand in the black - it is rare for England to beat the New Zealand team who are one of the most successful teams in any sport worldwide. They have played - 41 times with New Zealand winning 33 times, 2 draws and England have won 8.

You guys know football - the absolute easiest way to get rugby is to think that it's a bit like football but is ALWAYS a rushing play - because passes have to be laterals or backwards. If the ball moves forward through the air, it has to come off your foot, not off your hands. Get that and you only have a couple of things to leave out from your knowedge of football. The first is that you can't block - only the guy with the ball can be tackled. The other thing to forget from football - the idea of play stopping after a down. That's where the whole "ruck and maul" bit comes from - the player with the ball gets tackled and hte ball is still in play - if the tackled player stays on their feet it's a maul and you're competing for the ball with your hands. If they go down it's a ruck and you're competing for it with your feet. Oh, and "offense", "defence" and "special teams" don't exist. Think of it like taking your offensive, defensive snd kicking lines and picking one team of 15 players from all the players in all three - and you have to cover all the skills in there, becuase that one team you pick is playing for 80 minutes straight. Know football, get that, and you know enough rugby to start to really appreciate the game I played and loved (still do love it, although I don't play no more) from school though uni, despite it costing me a few teeth (when you're under the bottom of a maul and your face gets stood on with cleats, sometimes a mouthguard just aint enough) and ended up with a career-ending injury that made my left arm set off airport metal detectors.

So rugby dominant countries people understand the laws of rugby but because there are so many, you continually learn... but it's great to know that people are being introduced to rugby and willing to learn the laws in order to enjoy the game. League is faster but Union in my opinion is more exciting even though younger generation prefers league

You must "touch the ball down" - touchdown is named that for a reason. A defending player can actually hold the ball up, preventing a touchdown. I played both Union and League at school - and later Union in the Army. Much prefer Union - rucks and mauls making such a huge difference to the flow of play. Enjoy! PS I believe "pitch" is word used that pre-dated actually football, rugby or cricket ground - you claimed a "pitch" for a tent or a stall or a fairground, from "pitching a tent" - or deciding to start a sporting event, claiming the pitch.

Word of warning with rugby Union. If you watch a full game you run the risk of falling into a coma. The length of the game, including stoppages, is around 100 minutes. The amount of action totals approximately 30 mins. Referee stops the game every few seconds. If you want a simpler version which is many times more exciting, try NRL (National Rugby League). The action is non stop and end to end. You should definitely watch some NRL. Ideas.
