There's a great interview with Conan O'Brien interviewing Steve Coogan from a few years ago. It proved to me that Americans CAN understand Alan's humour - well, the ones who work in comedy anyway. I still think he's one of the funniest creations ever. Ricky Gervais road the coat-tails of this style shortly afterwards, so watching Alan is like going back to the source! Perfection. For reference, we don't tend to do the American-style product endorsement on British terrestrial media due to broadcast laws - so Alan is skirting close to the wind with his Chocolate Oranges! lol

In the dvd commentary Coogan describes when they are writing the characters there are back stories that are never expressed in the actual script but are kept in mind while the script is written. Two examples I remember are that Michael was never really in the army and Lynn, being a few years older than Alan, used to be his baby sitter when he was a kid.

Talking about school DJs. When I was about 8 years old we were going to have our first School Christmas disco. We were all encouraged to bring in our favourite cassette tapes for the DJ to play. I was always the class joker and along came an opportunity for me to play my first ever practical joke... Everyone knew how much I loved music. Even as a small child I loved going to the market stalls and buying as many records as I could... A couple of my school friends asked if I could put some records onto tape for them so they could bring it to the disco. I thought it was a good idea, the DJ isn't going to play my tape all night with all if my favourite songs on it. So If I got some tapes off the other kids and recorded all my favourite songs on multiple tapes then I can control the music of the night... It wasn't until the next day that one of my class mates asked if I could record the Micheal Jackson 'Bad' album, because it was his favourite and his deeply religious parents refused to buy it him, over one of his Mom's original tape of Bible and Jesus songs? Are you figuring out where this is going? The party was 2 days away and I told him that I'd give him the tape at the disco. I never recorded anything on it accept for a 5 second introduction saying "My name is Darren and I love this music" I'd put a sticker on the tape belongs to Darren Harris. The DJ is playing all the songs of that era mostly recorded for friends by me. Then it happened. "The DJ says this is for little Darren, and his one of favourite songs".. We all nearly pissed ourselves with laughter as "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures..."... My first ever practical joke. I remember being hauled off into the headmasters office and him saying saying something like I had the best grades in the class and I could make something of myself or I can treat education as something to throw away in exchange for being silly and having friends". about 10 years later I was having the same conversation with the headmaster of the collage. But some how it was the other way around. I failed my exams and didn't get the required grades to enter. But the Headmaster of the collage called me up and offered me a place any way. He said something like "It would be detrimental to your school friends if you were not there. You were the life of your class and you messed about, you joked, you bent rules to test authority and you're one of the worst students we've ever had. But.... This college needs someone like you"... :) It's quite funny because the school and college I went to is a really good school with some of the highest grades in the country. So they've tried to hide my existence I was there. lol. All my class photos are missing from the website, my classes, and the classes I was in, those exam results are missing... There is almost nothing online to even prove I was there. On the schools website there's nothing. All pictures of me and my class results are missing. But there's pictures elsewhere from my old school friends. They took pictures and they've iploaded things that I was envolved with lol.

I have to say, as British guy, that The Simpsons, Two And A Half Men, Frasier, Spin City, Newhart and Family Guy have all had tears of laughter streaming down my face.
