Daniel, most players prefer to leave Double 16, as you can come down easier if you miss....ie D8, D4, D2... Although leaving Double Top is also popular. Watch the player walk ons if you love the crowd reactions.

Yeah, Luke Littler favours Double Top. In contrast, Rob Cross loves D18.

The other advantage to D16 is that if you miss it inside to leave D8 it's the next segment up, so it's a minimal adjustment.

Michael Van Gerwen was 23 when he burst on the scene in 2012/13, so was Wade I think when he won his first major in 07', Adrian Lewis was 21 when he emerged in 2005/06. This kid recently turned 17, and he beat not just one, but two former champions of the world, and got to the final. Just goes to show how young talent makes this sport special.

@paullarge5983
@paullarge5983 3 ай бұрын
Almost there Daniel, but to explain. You want to aim for any double on the board that you feel you can hit. 40 (double twenty or known as 'tops') is just a double that's popular among players. Double 16 is also a popular choice for some reason. Whichever double you like to aim for, it's always an even number you go for. The reason for this, is that is you miss an odd number double finish and hit the si gle by mistake with your first dart, this would leave an odd number to finish on, and therefore would require you to hit another 2 darts on target to finish..if you miss an even number (e.g double 16 and hit the single) this would still leave 8 and you can do this with one dart. (And ultimately you would get 2 attempts at the remaining double. Confusing enough???. It really isn't. Another great upload gent's!!. 😂 thank you!!
@jackivan7632
@jackivan7632 3 ай бұрын
the reason D16 is popular is because if you keep hitting single after single, youll always end up on an even number until you reach the lowest double, D1 D20 goes to D10, which goes to D5. but if you hit a single 5, you end on 5, which is odd

the reason why double 16 is popular, hit 16 need d8, hit 8 need d4, hit 4 need d2, hit 2 need d1, can't do that on double 20, you obviously don't follow darts.

Love you're getting the gist of the game boys. One thing to note with the legs/sets etc, in the world champs they play best of 5 legs (first to 3) to win a set and then anything from 3 to 7 sets to win the game. The final is first to 7 sets, semi is first to 6 etc down to the early rounds where it's first to 3 sets. In the premier league and some other comps it's just win X number of legs to win the game. The big thing to get your head around is the scoring and why they go for certain numbers or doubles to leave them a number that gives them the best shot at winning the leg.
@liamthomas9622

I love how the reaction to seeing him for the first time is the same as everyone else's "no way he's 16" Also to mention some things that maybe didn't get picked up in the reaction, as well as also maybe explaining a few things too @ 7:18 the "st Helen's darts academy" is where you will see most of the big darts players from (Micheal smith, who if you've seen the "greatest leg of darts" you'll know of him, Dave Chisnall "Chizzy", Stephen bunting who won his first title 2 weeks ago, It is a good spectator sport, most of its crowd being football (European football) fans, hence why you hear a lot of chants, When they talk about averages, that's the average score they make each visit, a very good level is anything above 100 (littlers first match against Kist, in the orange shirt, was a 116.72) The checkout, always finish on a double, or the red bullseye in the middle which is 50, the green ring being 25, some people go for double 16 as if they miss they can go to 8 (next to 16) 4 then 2 then 1, but littlers preferred checkout is Double 10 (bottom right of the board) so he will always leave 40 so if he misses double 20, he's on his favourite finish. Or if he is on a more awkward finish (let's say 34 and he's left double 17) he will most likely hit single 14 and then go for his favourite double The Big Fish (mentioned at 14:17) is the highest possible checkout you can make being 170 as it's treble 20, treble 20, bullseye. It isn't mentioned in this video, but at 16:06, he does something called grouping, where instead of throwing at the T20s, he goes for 2 T18s as it leaves him on 56 (56 meaning he can go S16, D20, and if missed D10 (his favourite finished as mentioned)) whereas had he gone to 20s he could've left himself on 42, leaving 2 D20, 2 being a more awkward number to hit then 16 (missing S2 he'd hit 15 or 17, meaning he'd have to waste another dart to get a dart at a double, and at 21:12, that's why he goes S9 D16 rather than S1 D20, as missing 1 he hits 18 or 20, both putting him on more awkward ways of finishing than if he was to miss S9 as hitting 14 or 12 means he can still end up with a more preferable finish. Like you speak about at 19:36, this is where switching and grouping becomes really useful, as if you can find the most comfortable way to leave a finish in those 3 darts, or if you miss a treble on your first dart at a high checkout (130+) there is no way of winning the leg, so your best way about it is to leave the most preferable finish you can)

22:27 The thought process here is not just "Get two bullseyes", but if he gets an outer bulleye (green bit) on his first dart, he will then have 107 left. Then he just needs to hit a triple 19 and then he will have a shot at a bullseye for the win as well. He also had the option to go for bullseye, triple 14 and then double 20, but usually after getting the bullseye with the first dart, you go back at it unless the dart is barely hanging into the board, which happens more than you might think lol. These guys are fearless when the darts look flimsy. If I get a triple 20 and the dart looks like it's barely hanging .. I ain't going in the same hemisphere as that dart; I'm going for triple 19 instead. You can very easily knock a dart out of the board if it is just hanging. I've shot a dart that was hanging.. and then shot the third dart and just from the force of the dart hitting the board, the dart fell out lol. Always tragic.

Van Barneveld - Taylor 2007 world championship final is the match you want to watch. Goes down to the final leg of the final set. The final set goes to 5-5, rules were if it went to a final set they used to play on until someone was winning by two clear legs (like a Tennis tie-break) but if it reached 5-5 then next leg wins. They had to throw for the closest to the bull to decide who went first in the final leg.

The World Championship is SET play, so you have to win 3 legs per set to win a set. Legs are BEST of 5 so FIRST TO 3. The SETS you have to win increase further into the World Championship you get. 1st and 2nd round is BEST of 5 SETS (FIRST TO 3), 3rd and 4th rounds are BEST of 7 SETS (FIRST TO 4), Quarter Finals are BEST of 9 (FIRST TO 5), Semi Finals are BEST of 11 (FIRST TO 6) and the Final is BEST of 13 (FIRST TO 7). Most other tournaments are just LEG play so that is simpler and is just best of x legs. But set play is like Tennis where you score so many points for a game and you have to win 6 games per set and the winner is the one who wins the required sets first.

Darts is fantastic. My dad used to watch darts all the time, and I used to think it was so boring! He'd often often say "you should watch this, it's good!" and I'd be like "nah....it's bloody darts!" Then a couple of years ago I randomly watched it on TV.....and I _got_ it. I finally understood what the appeal was and I was immediately hooked! I've loved darts ever since. There's just SO MUCH drama, tension and excitement in nearly every match! Each match ebbs and flows. I've rarely ever seen a bad game. You'll see one player running away with a match, only for his opponent to hit an amazing sequence of darts out of nowhere and win back a set or a leg, and suddenly the whole momentum of the match swings the other way, and the guy who _WAS_ winning comfortably is now _viably_ starting to struggle, missing loads of shots and getting flustered, while the other guy has got a second wind and is now absolutely flying and full of confidence! It's absolutely fascinating to watch!

Doubles also come down to personal favourite, but as others say double 16 is very popular because if you accidentally hit the single you always have a another double to go for, whereas the double of odd numbers leave with with no out if you hit the single, so if you're struggling and your opponent is hitting their doubles quickly it may mean a shift in strategy. I've played for my local pub as most pubs have a darts team, it's a lot of fun but can still get pretty tense, there's amateur pub leagues and you'll play all the other pubs in the league home and away, so socially it's great too.

Each game both players start on 501 points, and as they score points it reduces to 0. They have to finish on a double. The most popular double is Double 20 but Double 16 is very very popular also. The reason it starts on an odd number is to force the darts players to hit at least 1 odd number in a game (they aim for 19s usually). The FASTEST someone can end a game of darts is in 9 darts. Known as a 9 darter. I would recommend reacting to the most popular 9 darters. 9 darters are the pinnacle of darts and are insanely hype.

The optimal strategy isn't necessarily to leave yourself on double 20. Mathematically Double 16 is a better out as it gives you the most single out opportunitiess should you miss the double but hit the single It gives you 5 misses, i.e D16. D8 D4 D2 D1 whereas Double 20 only gives you three misses.e D20 D10 D5 if you miss D5 and hit the single you aren't on a 1 dart finish. You can also finish on the bullseye (50) Every player however has their preference Luke Little for example likes D10

The trick with the doubles is to try and leave ones that break down say 32 if you hit single 16 it still leaves double 8 then double 4 then double 2 ect if you leave say 38 then hit a single 19 you have to use another dart to even it up again
@lizrobins85
@lizrobins85 3 ай бұрын
I'm sure you've realized 180 is the maximum you can score with 3 darts. Players practice hitting treble 20 - and treble 19 - to quickly reduce their scores. They also tend to practice hitting double 20 (tops) and double 16; if you miss you can still get 'out' by hitting double 10 or double 8, and if you miss again, double 5 or double 4. With odd numbers, you have to waste a dart to get back on a double.
@GusMac6129
@GusMac6129 3 ай бұрын
Players don't always leave/prefer Tops, although a very good option. You will regularly see double 16/18/12 as other preferred routes, as if you come inside and hit the single, you still then half the double. Although these things are personal preference. You won't regularly see players leave, what i call odd doubles, like double 13/15/17 unless forced to, or stray darts leads them on that path, as if they hit the single, while going for the double, it means they can't finish on an odd number, and they have to burn a dart to then leave another double to hit. Having to burn darts, especially at the top level, can be costly. Also combination shots, can lead to a variety of doubles. For example 142, can be finished many ways, treble 20, treble 20, double 11.... or treble 20, treble 14, tops... or treble 20, bull, double 16. There are many ways to finish many checkouts, personal preference, good markers/guides and feel will decide how players do things. 161/164/167/170 can only be finished on the bull.

So long as Littler doesn't let the money ruin him or go nuts on booze and women, he could dominate the sport for thirty years. He's that good.

20d rack up the points! However it's easier to miss 1/2 inch letterbox. You've got a rising or falling dart so on double close miss or single and another try Vertical numbers have more chance of being hit! ( Not easy but statistically odds better) 1 inch door with rising falling dart! Accuracy and strategy!!! Strategy is the name of the game!!!! ( It's Darts, but you know what I mean!!!!) 😁

Glad you are starting to do the math Daniel. Spencer not quite there yet. Try pausing the video, look at the score and work it out. Part of the fun is predicting the shot before they throw. If you see 100 they are going for T20 + D20. If you see 90 they are going for T18 + D18. If you see 170, the biggest checkout, it becomes obvious that it’s T20 + T20 + bull. It’s just sums. You need to have numbers already in your head, like T19 is 57, T18 is 54, T17 is 51. Then it becomes easier as the same numbers crop up all the time.

It should be noted as well the calibre of the players he was up against... Kist former BDO world champion, Gilding former UK Open champion (in some respects one of the hardest competitions to win), van Barneveld one of the all time greats and a five times world champion, Cross former world champion. Would probably have won the title were it not for Humphries being in the form of his life... this was no easy draw and the way he made these players look very ordinary was impressive.

No... You really want to leave 32 for the double 16. If you miss and hit the number you have the double 8 then then the double 4... Multiples of 10 are bad.

Not at all Basically you are right, but there are so many players preferring tops, like Gary Anderson, Luke Littler, Gerwyn Price, James Wade...just to name a few, the list is way longer.
