I was on holiday on the island of Jersey and in a restaurant when my phone pinged with the news. I blurted out without thinking. "The Queen has died". The whole restaurant fell silent and our young waitress teared up. I felt stupid for my outburst but in retrospect I think everyone there appreciated getting the news.

I cant speak for all of the UK, but personally I was surprised by the level of emotion I felt, normally when a famous but remote figure dies, its sad but it doesnt really affect you much. But with the queen, the emotion was close to what you feel for when your closest Granny passes on, a real sense of personal loss. As Jodi Mitchell said "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'til it's gone" End of an era...... RIP Your Majesty, God save the king

I work for a Government department and was in London on the day of Her Majesty's passing. I became aware that preparations were underway before 5:30pm when I left the office. That evening, I was in the pub and they turned the music off when the official news broke. I serve the Crown, my son also serves the Crown and my wife starts her Crown service in October. I am proud to have served under Her Majesty for over 30 years. I will now serve His Majesty (whom I have met as Prince of Wales) with the same pride. I was able to attend the lying in state with my son. On a personal level, the Queen exemplified all that is good about being British and I was so pleased and proud to see our nation come together to thank Her for Her service. She will be sorely missed.

I was having lunch with my daughter and a friend when the news came through that Her Majesty was “under medical supervision” and the family were all on their way to Balmoral to be with her …. this spoke volumes to us as the family would not be called unless it was serious, and we all rushed home to put the tv on and watch the news. Very, very sad when the news of her death was announced. I am 71, she was Queen for all of my life apart from the first year of it, she was a wonderful monarch and very much loved. I still have not gotten used to the fact that she is no longer with us, but I am an ardent supporter of our Monarchy, long live King Charles III.

@marycarver1542

She was loved, not just because she WAS the Queen, but because of the genuine loving person she was. She really CARED . Unlike some of the present generation she ws genuinely HUMBLE and dedicated her life to the job. SHE promised , all those years ago to dedicate her life, be it long or short to the people of this nation, and she MEANT every word and never ever reneged ! It was never intended she should hold that position, it came about because her uncle Edward abdicated, make HER father next in line. something no one had ever considered.Through ill health that lovely man died young, passing on the responsibility to his daughter. Elizabeth wanted nothing more from life than to be a country housewife, surrounded by dogs, HORSES, and all that goes with that. Instead, at 21 she found her future taken from her hands. She was NEVER grand. On her private estate at Sandringham in Norfolk she and Philip only stayed in the big house for Christmas ans family occasions. There is a cottage, Wood Farm on the estate, and they stayed there. She would do the washing up and domestic stuff a normal housewife undertakes. When her darling husband, Philip stepped down from public life a few years ago, he retired to Wood Farm and lived there with the minimum of fuss. So, she really did give her life, or the life she would have preferred to her country. We will not see h er like again, God Bless her.

The majority of Britons have lived their whole lives with her as our Queen and the shock was palpable. It's good that she died at Balmoral because she loved it so much. I looked at the old film footage of her getting of the plane as the new Queen being met by Churchill at the foot of the steps and how she move about the dignitaries present with a smile and a word for each one. It was only later and in private that she wept for the loss of her father, she prioritised her duty from the very beginning. That's admirable. The second Elizabethan era has seen so much change but she was a constant source of reassurance. Our loyalty now passes to C.R.III, God save the King.

Hello from Canada 🇨🇦 I was shocked when I first saw a video on KZfaq about the royal family racing to HM Queen Elizabeth II. I stayed on watching until heard the news. Even though she was 96, I think many of us almost felt she'd live forever, which is impossible of course. I can definitely empathize with those who had old losses come back and hit them. I was very close with my Gram, who was 4yrs older than HM, and we used to talk about her all the time together. My Gam's favourite thing to say about her was "She's a tough old bird" lol. Watching all the events brought back the memories and sadness that came with the loss. However, like my Gram, who was 89 when she passed, HM Queen Elizabeth II led a wonderful, adventurous, loving and happy life. We must celebrate and remember them for that.

We in my family were all at home on the day, watching the TV since it was announced that HMQ was very unwell and the royals were rushing to her side. My mother asked "does that flag look like it is half-mast to you" (TV Showed the flag at Buckenham Palace). As I said "It certainly looks like it", the BBC newsreader came on with a black tie to say that Buckenham Palace has announced that the had Queen died. It was a bit of a shock because only a few days before, that same week, The Queen had met & officially appointed the new Prime Minister Lis Truss. We were saying "Now there are 2 Elizabeths in charge" and enjoying the photos of her smiling at the meeting. Then she was gone.

I've never known London quite like it, never spoken to so many people on a visit (I live quite near so have been countless times). It was quite the experience being there amongst so many people, all with a common purpose. It got the point that Green Park hit capacity, so we were directed to Hyde Park to lay flowers. While we were there, they brought in a truck full of flowers from St. James's Park where I, along with many others helped lay them out. It was very quiet, people were friendly and respectful and the messages left by many on the flowers were so moving. I had to be in the capital during such a historic time. One of the things I heard someone on the radio say about reaction to the queen's death was that she was our last link with the 2nd World War - and I think it's that link with our country's history along with her lifelong dedication and duty that has hit people hardest. At one point The Queue was said to be a 24 hour wait, so they closed access for a while, but then quickly came down to 17 hours so they reopened it. Apparently the hall was shut for 1 hour in every 24 in order to refresh the flowers and reset for the next day.

We had been expecting the worst but when the news broke I was really shocked by how emotional I was. My mum cried and my dad - an army veteran - was choked up and held my mum's hand. It was a strange moment and although she was 96 it was shocking to hear that the woman who had been in all our lives for so long had died. The Queen was always there in some way or another: on the news, at national events, on our screens every Christmas with her yearly message and even five minutes from our house in Northern Ireland while on tour. It was surreal to see her, and to be in that hall where soooo much famous British history has taken place, like the trial of guy fawkes to mention just 1. I went home and rewound the live feed and watched myself on television paying my respects. I also went to the funeral, as soon as the service started on loudspeakers on the mall it went silent and everyone just listened and waited for her to go past for the last time and being a londoner I was use to seeing the Queen

After work on saturday me and the wife drove down to london. We got to the start of the queue at 00:30. We walked past her at 1pm on the sunday. We had to pay our respects to our queen. She was a stoic woman. She lead us through the tough times and guided us.

I was genuinely shocked, I’m British and was not a massive monarchist; but I cried buckets and I’ve just watched your video and cried again… You guys are amazing, and the world would be a much better place if people who were ‘influencers’ on KZfaq etc were as thoughtful, and more importantly, RESPECTFUL, as you are. The Queen’s death has changed my mind about the importance of traditions and the monarchy and I hope the new King is equally respected and loved. God Save the King!

I was having my dinner and it came on the evening news. Wed heard she was ill earlier that day, and they never tell you that so you feel forewarned somewhat. I spent that evening watching tributes and docs on her life and i shed more than a few tears. She was our nation personified. Duty and honour and i cant really explain it any other way, oh and constant

Here in 🇰🇪, it was about 14.00 when the radio announcements were made and I was about to have my after lunch nap. I immediately thought of the moment my gramps told me Princess Elizabeth, then here in 🇰🇪 on holiday, had become Queen. My youngest, at school in England said the announcement was made by the Headmaster during lunch at the refectory. Each of my immediate family have attended memorial services since, at Nairobi last Sunday, at Brisbane and Vancouver and Wells and Edinburgh the previous Sunday. My third son and his husband actually queued 12 hours and attended the laying-in-state, as they are in London. 🇰🇪🇨🇦🇦🇺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Initially I thought oh well she’s the Queen she’ll pull through she’s a tough little cookie, but then I saw on the news that the senior royals were all rushing up to Balmoral so that concerned me greatly. Then I noticed our news readers had all changed into their black before the sad news was even released so then many of us guessed it was all over. End of an era, end of this amazing dedicated service. Yes she was our Queen but also known, respected and loved around the world so I wasn’t surprised that much of the world had also gone into mourning with us. Strange how it somehow brought the world closer together just for a few days anyway. God bless her wonderful soul!. I’m going to struggle when I next have to sing the national anthem that’s for sure.

Around the world (outside of the Commonwealth) you may not comprehend just how important the Royal Family and in particular HM the Queen, she has been a stay in most of our lives we measure events along with her, for example the Silver Jubilee and the day of celebration is still fresh in my mind and reminds me of the year I moved up to secondary school. As a nation we mark time by the reins of our Monarchs ie Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian, I can't think of any other way time is measured by other nations in a different way.

I turned out to watch The Queen's funeral cortege drive past my town on her way from Balmoral Castle to Edinburgh - I just felt it was the right thing to do. She had given so much for so long, and given her extremely strong connection and affinity with Scotland, and her local connections, it would have felt wrong. Her mother's childhood home was Glamis Castle, which is just a few miles from where I live, and HM herself as a child visited on family holidays. Unfortunately, I also had to be there in a professional capacity as I'm a reporter, and it was one of the few occasions when I felt my camera definitely got in the way. A sad day indeed for the country and the world.

On the radio we had heard that the royal family were all heading up to Balmoral so I was a little prepared for bad news. You would not have been out of place in the queue at all, people from all nationalities were there. After a three hour rail journey my neighbour joined the back of the queue at 11:30 on Thursday night and got into Westminster Hall just before noon on Friday and they don't regret a minute of it!

Please guys, if you are planning to react to the Queen's funeral take the time to view as much of the day as possible including the processions to, and from Westminster Abbey. It really will help you to appreciate the whole event. Even if you cannot react to the whole thing it will help you to put things into context. Far too many of the early reactions glossed over important aspects and seemed very disjointed. I'm sure you will demonstrate your usual thoughtfulness and sensitivity.

Yes, please watch as much as you can (in segments) - you don't need to do a video, but just for yourselves. Some of these "highlights" videos miss out really important and very emotional moments, like the coffin escorted by the military on the Long Walk up to Windsor Castle, the Queen's small pony with her silk scarf draped over the saddle, all the traditional scenes as Her Majesty was divested of her symbols of office, and the lone piper playing off into the distance at the end.
@neilanyon4792

@@janettesinclair6279 That is so true. It sounds impossible that watching a slow procession, over a mile long (the column length as well as the distance travelled), could be so fascinating. The march from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch, accompanied by the funeral marches of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Chopin was exquisite in its precision and execution. This was hardly ever mentioned in most reviews.

When it was announced I had been watching the news nonstop since it was announced she was unwell. I saw the news broadcasters slowly change in to black suits, I knew it was coming but when the official appointment was made and they referred to Charles as The King I broke and sobbed when the national anthem played i sang God Save The King for the first while sobbing. What followed was a mix of emotions over the next 11 days, I live close to RAF Northolt so went to watch as Charles returned to London for the first time as King, a weird mix of sadness, more for his loss than ours but also pride for our new King. I went back to RAF Northolt to see Her Majestys coffin return, tens of thousands lined the road this time, it seemed like the whole if the local area came out to witness history or say goodbye and watching the TV after it seemed like everyone who lived along the route dud the same. The next day my mum and I set of at 11.30pm to join the Queue. We joined it at 1am at London Bridge and it took 8 hours. Honestly I was prepared to wait as long as it took, my mum, my gran and I had been to the Queen Mother's lying in state. My mum had been to Winston Churchill's with my gran when she was little and I recently found out my wife's nan went to George VI's lying in state. The queue was amazing, we made friends and chatted to the people around us. Held places for people to go to the loo to get a cup of tea. The queue itself wasn't overall sad. Most of the queen chat was about how great she had been and how good our new King will be. For me the security check was the airlock for oh shit this is it. Once you got past security and could see the doors the mood changed. Smiles disappeared, the realisation of what was about to happen set in. In the hall was as you'd expect and as you can see from the footage. No talking, some people stonefaced others holding back tears. Each person showing respect in there own way. After passing the coffin the guard was changed. Everyone watched as they made their way but I found myself looking back at the coffin, at the crown. I used that time you say a final goodbye in person and to ask that (i dont know who as I'm not hugely religious) King Charles may have as easy a transition and mourning process as possible befor that crown is placed on his head. After all that I stayed home to watch the Funeral with my wife. It has been weird, a huge loss and very sad but at the same time our new King has been amazing, he has been a great comfort to us while mourning his own mother. I am of course very sad to say goodbye to Her Late Majesty but I'm hopeful for the future of the Monarchy and our country with our new Prince and Princess of Wales and our New King and Queen. Rest in Peace Your Majesty and Long Live The King.

I joined the queue at Southwark Park at 7.30am on Sunday and got to walk past the coffin at 5.30pm. It was an extraordinary and uplifting experience - I think people were desperate to find some way of saying "thank you" to the Queen and the queue was their way of doing it - committing 10+ hours of their lives for someone who had given 70 years of theirs to us. There was a very positive atmosphere in the queue, people very friendly and sharing their experiences, not sombre at all....until we reached Westminster Hall where silence and solemnity took over. I was very glad that I did it.

I felt was really touching that apologies on behalf of some Americans you mentioned. Honestly the UK think of Americans as like cousins across the pond. I felt it was a moment in history where everyone was together witnessing such a sadness together but remembering such a beautiful person a Legend looking back at her life and seeing the good she did around the world. I feel so proud to be British And you hit the nail on the head A massive Thank you to all the volunteers. The navy. Guards everyone that helped put the whole thing together. The funeral was beautifully put together, we will never forget. It does feel strange still. I think on Christmas day it'll feel strange, where every year the Queen's speach would show, now it'll be the King. I'm sure he'll do a brilliant Job. He's been making some difference already and has done for alot of years. God Save the King

I was following the news with my son and when it was announced I was completely stunned. I had obviously heard that as a term before and probably used it from time to time, but I'd never actually experienced it till that moment. I just sat there for a few minutes and couldn't process what I was hearing. Then I cried for about a week and more! It's still hard to believe really, as the Queen has just always been there and is so woven into the fabric of our country. Just as tiny example, she features in some kids book, such as the BFG and Gangsta Granny. And those books are about 30 years apart.

So true. I saw the video of an American who skipped through the scenes and ceremony at Westminster Abbey and then finished there to comment about the formalities on their podcast……and missed the true essence of the day and the Queen … They didn’t realise the significance of the return to Windsor which represented the Queen going home along “The Long Walk” to say goodbye to her waiting pony, her corgi and her staff before being laid to rest with her husband and sister and parents.

Her last act was to bring so many people together in a time of social unrest. Strikes were cancelled, people forgot their own troubles and co-operated to give her the send off she so richly deserved. We supported and comforted each other and cried together. Its a shame to think it won't last anywhere near as long as her devotion to us and that there are so many people who are totally ignorant of who she was and what she represented. God save the King! If he only achieves a half of what his mother did he'll do us proud.

I'm welling up all over again. I've been tearful on and off since HM died. Yes, I agree that after the first initial sadness for a couple of days, people also started to feel that they wanted to celebrate her life and show gratitude, as well as mourn her. The atmosphere has been significantly different to, say, when Princess Diana died, in the sense that the passing of a 96 year old isn't a tragedy, whereas the sudden death of a 37 year old mother of 2 young children clearly is. Thanks for your thoughtfulness - appreciated.

I queued from Friday morning until I passed HM coffin at 1:38am on the Saturday. There was a huge feeling of unity and comradery within the queue. We were all there for the same reason - because we all felt we owed HM 14 hours to say thank you. One we got our wristband at Tower Bridge, we were able to pop out of the queue for something to eat, before getting back in line, so that bit wasn't too bad. The queue was long, the last part at Victoria Gardens at Parliament was brutal on the feet, but that 5 second moment... being able to stand, bow and just say thank you - absolutely necessary and worth it for me. Yes I am a huge constitutional monarchist, I believe it really is the best form of government for our country at least - HM did not put a foot wrong really over 70 years, she served - as she promised she would do - us the people until her last breath. And I have no doubt that HM The King, will do a fantastic job - he truly is his mothers son.
